I'm always looking for any more interviews he gave that I havnt seen already. Since he didn't give a lot I highly doubt there is any rock I havnt already overturned.
no. it hurts too much. maybe later ok?
@@MrSomethingElse okay. soon love.
Jeez. Being an ex addict of heroin inside have cognitive dissonance by listening to Elliott. But take strength from his failures bro. He should be a warning not a romanticised hero. Still listening by the way. And clean. He gives me strength.
It's been 16 years since he died today. I still listen to his stuff every day. We love and miss you Elliott.
My favorite song with between the bars and condor Ave. These 3 songs are masterpieces. Reminds me 15 years ago, when I was in college.
So sad that he died.
Nice profile pic. Best party movie.
He had so much more to say...
Me too. Rest In Peace Elliot❤️
Elliot was my sisters favorite. He had an angelic voice (for a lad).
I fell in love with this song years ago watching "The Girl Next Door". Last night, my wife was watching "Good Will Hunting" and I heard it again. Finally, I decided to look up the artist only to learn of his passing some 20 years ago now...broke my heart.
Life is strange, but I'll always remember his name now. Thank you for this gem.
I just looked it up because of Good will Hunting (I live in Southie still to this day) they filmed the movie in my city...
I was the other way around, I’d been an Elliott Smith fan for about 2 years before I decided to watch Good Will Hunting one night and was surprised to hear so many of his songs in the soundtrack (I was aware of Miss Misery being in it but not all the others)
great soundtrack great movie

I found him through Good Will Hunting when I was young. He was taken from us too soon
@@scottrosemond-gh3qf How'd you like the movie?
Rest in peace Byron. You meant a lot to so many people.
@LVhasAIDS theyre probably someone who was close with the commenter
Did reckful like this song? Do you have a clip of him listening to it
i miss him :/
oof, he introduced me to this song so, so long ago. Didn't expect to see this as the top comment.
much love and respect fam
Being addicted to heroin, living in Portland Oregon, listening to Elliot Smith.... indelible memories, a lot of suffering and heartache, but somehow still nostalgic for a time bygone.
I send you a big hug and I wish you'll find your happiness
Relateable. Props for overcoming.
Amazing job, us addicts are some of the strongest 💪 humans
I definitely feel, I spent eleven years addicted to heroin, living on the streets of Detroit and his music was one of the only thing found solace in. Gives me chills when I listen to him and go back to those times
Hi Im a person from Washington State and I would like to warn of something and I hope my words can help a bit. You are not a Egyptian Demon named Anubis for considering suicide or doing heroin. Some people call it substance abuse disorder for a reason and the brain malfunctions with tragic losses of dopamine and serotonin too. Please believe from the center of your being outwards that you are not Anubis please and especially not for suicidal ideation or heroin "abuse disorder". And furthermore please dont look at the label of substance abuse disorder as a word of victimization to justify further substance abuse but accept it is in the diagnostic manual for mental health that way for a reason. It could save more than your life.
The fact that he played and sang this perfectly, and then double tracked it, perfectly, is just mind boggling. His skill knew no bounds.
What exactly is double tracking as a skill, heard a lot of praise for him doing it, but I don’t know what’s difficult about it compared to what’s normally done
@@asa.8691 To be able to play and sing one take, then record another one that's almost identical, is really hard. Most musicians have to do it over and over to get it right.
@@BadDreamFucker oh I get it, it’s worth it when you get the amazing layering he does
@@asa.8691 It adds so much depth. Really makes his music stand out. Not that other artists don't do it. He was the best tho.
Amazing!
I tried learning this on the guitar. I got the first ten seconds down, but then I just lose the ability to play the rest in spite of the hours I put into it.
The fact that Elliott can simultaneously play this on the acoustic and sing a rather verbose song shows his immense talent.
lol same I tried learning this for a couple days but eventually gave up .
Don't give up. In my experience, shortly after you find something to be impossible, it gets easier and it all starts to click.
Exactly.a lot of people think its a loop or studio multi tracking.wrong.thats part of the purity in what this guy did..no production,no fancy pedals and amps to hide behind.just the songs.raw talent.pain.this is a man with a destiny.here to do one thing.this..
@@richardgriego4018 I tried playing around with the tuning to make certain chord-to-chord hand movements easier, but it still catches up to you.
Still searching for a tab that doesn't kill my forearm muscle from chord changes!
once you try to learn his songs you gain a whole new perspective on his talent
Perfect song to sit next to a window on a rainy day and think about the past

Amen to that! I'm from Seattle... done it too many times to count.
That sounds good right about now, with the exception of the rain.
One of my core memories is sitting in a parking lot of a CVS with my best friend and listening to this song.

One Of The Greatest Songs Ever Written
it takes forever to get tired of his songs
Yeah, it takes like 20 whole seconds!
+Johnny Templton oh
oh, well not true for me his songs have been on repeat for dayssss
dutchbagel its true, I found it in Good Will Hunting actually and I suddenly liked it.
the comebacks though
I'll miss you Byron. Thanks for keeping me company when I was alone. You made the 2010s bearable and I'll never forget you.
Lyrics:
Someone's always coming around here trailing some new kill
Says, "I've seen your picture on a hundred-dollar bill"
What's a game of chance to you
To him is one
Of real skill
So glad to meet you, Angeles
Picking up the ticket shows, there's money to be made
Go on, lose the gamble. That's the history of the trade
Did you add up all the cards left to play
To zero
And sign up with evil, Angeles?
Don't start me trying now
Uh huh, uh huh, uh huuuh
'Cause I'm all over it, Angeles
I can make you satisfied in everything you do
All your secret wishes could right now be coming true
And be forever with my poison arms
Around you
No one's gonna fool around with us
No one's gonna fool around with us
So glad to meet you, Angeles
Thank u
great writing
Here because of Reckful. A brilliant man, who had a massive influence on me. I owe my success and knowledge in specific areas to him. Thank you for the years of entertainment and for being a friend when nobody was around. I know there are others out there feeling the same pain after the loss of such a amazing person, you are not alone. Praying for reckfuls family and everyone effected by this loss. Love you Reckful
I’m just a regular Elliot Smith fan so idk who you’re talking about. What does he have to do with the song?
@@jamescarroll8861 He was a streamer on Twitch and Elliot Smith was his favorite artist. We lost Byron 'Reckful' Bernstein on July 2nd. After years of dealing with depression and other mental illnesses he took his own life. He did a lot for everyone around him and the online community, so much more than the world could do for him. RIP Reckful.
Leo eo That actually breaks my heart I’m sure he’s was a special person if Elliot was his favorite
I'm sorry for your loss.
@@lsegher holy shit I didn't watch reckful much but I knew of him and heard of his passing. Never knew his favorite artist was elliott smith. Makes me feel bad cause I assumed most twitch streamers with any sort of recognition didn't have the music depth to enjoy someone like eliott. Fuck. Really bummed me out when i heard of him taking his own life though. RIP. Youre outta this shit world and done with the pain finally at least. You'll be missed dearly though.
Rest in peace Byron. You were the best..
This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. Heartbreaking. A true poet.
This is one of the last songs my husband shared on Facebook before he overdosed. I wish so many things had gone differently. RIP my love. This song always makes me feel close to you.
❤
I shot heroin for 15 years and found Elliot at an amazing time of short sobriety within those 15 years. His music brings me back to all the great moments at that time in my life and also brings me to the horrible times but his music and voice does it in such a beautiful, soulful way. Forever one of my favorite artists
CottonShot probably isn't the greatest name for your channel huh?
It's the best name tbh
Still on that needle shit, or clean now?
Elliott taught me how to play guitar. I was amazed this local celebrity (heatmiser) would deign to do personal guitar lessons. I was at edry show of 20 people in thee o'hell cafe. Then he got big.
And still never happy.
I understand. I remember. He was like a big brother. Even though I was just one student of many.
Anyone who ever knew Elliott would never be talking conspiracy theories.
Kill rock stars: I was such a fanboy of your label. Thank you.
Thats fucking sick, I had no idea he ever did guitar lessons
You are extremely lucky dude
@@scroogemccuck985 it was before good will hunting. And heatmiser was huge then. I felt lucky at the time. But also... Sad that one of most popular pdx band guy still had to hustle on the side.
@@nevynnowhere6322 that is so cool wtf, how was he?? Only story I have of him is my aunt met him backstage at a gig she had as a backing singer for another band, she said he was pissed drunk on the floor so they didn't really talk much
The Rilo Kiley and Ben Folds songs about him basically say the people who knew him knew he had his end inside him. It was right there in the songs
love you Byron
RIP Reckful RIP Elliott Smith, you will be loved.
I love my parents for introducing me to Elliott’s music as a child. I remember hearing these songs as a kid in the 90’s in the car very young. My childhood was hard at times. Now reflecting at age 28 these songs bring me back and I’m at peace. I love both of them.
Much love to all of you.
I hope you're looking down from heaven and realize the immense impact you've had on all of us. We will continue the fight. Rest easy now. Rip Byron.
Thank you for everything Byron you are and always be an inspiration. RIP
his songs are addictive, once you start listening its hard to stop
Thank you for going beyond the surface level. You were never shy to tell us how you truly felt, it's moments like that, that made people like me in a world where everything felt so fake and lifeless feel so comfortable, knowing that there is another person in this world who feels the same crazy, depressing, and spontaneous thoughts as me You were very intelligent and had such a curious mind, you treated everyone equally and tried to simply find the little joys in life you used to once experience as a kid. I am selfish for relying on you for solace, knowing you had it worse and yet you still managed to hang on gave me a breath of air. You were such a unique person that there isn't a perfect word to describe you, there is so much to say, but I'd like to end this by saying you taught me an unimaginable amount about passion, determination, joy, curiosity, friends, loneliness, independence, happiness, and much more that I will look back and discover along this journey. Thank you for everything Byron, at least you're not hurting anymore. Love you.
😭 this is the most wholesome comment I've ever read in my life
what an amazing human. Elliott's music lives forever.
It's been 25 years since I first heard him. 19 years since he's been gone. There has not been a single road trip I've taken since his passing where I haven't listened to his beautiful music for at least a few songs, as sometimes that's all my soul can take.
This song along with his whole collection of songs literally saved my life... Wow. Love Elliott Man... R.I.P
how so ?
Yes please elaborate
What were the other artists and songs helped you, man?
So his whole collection.
I can vouch for this, thx 4 bein here
The one voice that still runs chills and a tear even after hearing it years later
So long as a man's name is still spoken, he never truly dies. Rest easy Elliot Smith. And thank you for your loving and warm music that was birthed from the cold and painful life you lived.
Every few years I come back to his music. The beauty and tragedy of life, perfectly encapsulated in notes and chords.
This was the first song I learned on guitar after I watched Reckful play it on stream many years ago. This will always remind me of him. Rest In Peace Byron.

The guitar is just incredible
I've always loved this song but not until recently do I think I've understood it's meaning. Listening to it and looking at the lyrics, I believe it is referring to how one goes to LA searching for stardom and/or fame, and ends up selling his/her soul in the process as the price.
“Sign up with evil”
this song says DO NOT SELL OUT
Still listening to this song aftee years and years. Elliot Smith should be a legend among legends. He is, in my books.
Elliott was a life saver for lots of us. Sacrificed his life to teach others how to live.

I discovered Elliot smith not long ago (don't bully me pls), and he's since become such a major influence. I've never come across someone who can wrap you right up in a song like he can. His style of guitar, his honest words, I'm in the Elliot Smith Rabbit hole now and I'm sorry I didn't wind up here sooner.
Rest in peace
*Edit* it's been 10 months, this is my most played song, I still can't get to the end without crying.
He's really soothing in a way that you normally don't find in mainstream music and he always had that acoustic charm in his songs. The lyrics resonate even more with me nowadays, specially the heartbreak songs and I found about about him as a teen ahah
@Luís dont worry, I fully resonate with his melancholic lullabies as a grown adult and If I'd found him as a teenager, damn I'd have been locked in my room with his music at full volume 🤣
I feel you ahah 😂
You should never be bullied for finding Elliot Smith. He is genuinely incredible and has saved my life

So beautiful. Thank you Elliott smith for leaving us with such awesome tunes.
It's depressing this song has so little views.
The version of angeles on youtube from 8 years ago is very close to 4 million views.
maybe its better that way, but we know !
Right? This song is amazing and I listen to everything. Kurt Vile and I were chillin and I played that song and he had never heard it. Check out "Pretty Pimpin" by Kurt Vile.
If you get depressed over a song getting over a million views you're doing pretty good :)
made the "Skylar leaving" scene in Good Will Hunting so poignant...
Elaborate, please.
I think he played his hand. AndI think he played it right.
But, by the end, eventually he had to go see about a girl.
Kevin Graham if you’ve watched the movie his comment is pretty self explanatory

I always thought that if I were ever rich one day and you were still streaming, I'd snipe you and tell you just how much you helped me and everyone else get through the rough times. Rest in peace, Byron.
Seriously, he got me inspired to look into investing at a very early age. What a brilliant guy, I wish he knew how much he impacted us.
RIP Byron... I didn't realize how much i loved you until today. I hope that wherever you are is better than where I am.
Why is Elliot smith so under rated. i know he died so no influence but he should be among Beatles and queens
I am always saying this.
+Abhinav Joshi He's not underrated. Plenty of people love him. But you are honestly saying he should be up there with the Beatles who had about 2 decades of great songs that changed music as we know it?
+erikbmyname I love the Beatles and definitely agree he should be considered as one of the greats.
Well, Beatles appealed to the masses, they were like a boyband in their era
Not only did he make music longer than the beatles, but he made all his songs by himself pretty much. I like his music more than the beatles, The beatles are great though, and were a big influence of elliotts
This song will always remind me of walking through the mountains when i hitchhiked across canada in 2012 such a great song
I love Elliott and Good Will Hunting
So much pain in his voice. Both haunting and mesmerizing.
I always loved his singing and his lyrics, but now, I think it's his so personal way of creating heavenly tunes and his unique way of playing the guitar that gets me...
If I ever make a movie this is gonna be the song that plays during the opening credits/intro
I mourned this guy for years, longer than I did anybody I know. I had to stop listening to his music in order to move on

Been listening for some time, still a bit fresh with Elliot’s songs but heard many of them and felt them, always reminds me of the good times with my best buddy. He’s struggling and dealing with depression and tried multiple times to kill himself but always fails to do so in which I’m lucky but I’m afraid to lose him..
