man, this life is livable thanks to this guy
What an irony, right?..
Such an underrated Elliott song. Love how nasty it sounds.
so true
I love this kind of sound. this song reminded me a lot of the early Will Oldham/Palace Brothers stuff. if you like this listen to the album Joya and Viva Last Blues.
unbelievable how this has the lowest amount of views of any song from either/or in the album playlist, this is one of the highlights for me
My feelings exactly. It's always been one of my favorites.
So underrated!!!
One of the best songs on the album
I think this song is clearly the weakest song on either or. If this wasn't on the album either or would literally be perfect with every song being a 10/10
@@LtGregoryStevens its easily one of the best songs on the album
I can't believe it took me all these years to hear this track. I put in my bloody valentine, jeff buckley and radiohead as 3 artists, on tidal music, and this song was the first on the radio playlist shuffle.
Been almost a year. Hope you're just as obsessed now as I (and a bunch of others) are!
Have you listened to more Elliott?
@@bentownsend4017I love Elliott !!! I wonder if that has heard more ?!!!! 😂
Welcome friend you found a timeless one
Hypnotic rock n roll at its finest form.Love u Elliott!
This album is an absolute masterpiece. Elliott Smith was incredible...
Elliott himself was a masterpiece. I legitimately can't think of a single song he wrote that isn't good.
The heaviest song of the record, I quite like it.
Indeed
This song appears to be about a relationship that is going through a difficult time. The singer is referring to their significant other as "sugar" and describes the feeling of being numb and absent in the relationship. The "Cupid's trick" is a metaphor for the emotional ups and downs in the relationship, and the idea that love can be a "stupid kick" that can make one reel or feel unsteady. The lyrics suggest that the singer is searching for a resolution to the problems in the relationship, and that they are trying to understand why the relationship is struggling. The repeated refrain of "lick me up, it's my lie" seems to suggest that the singer is aware of the falseness or unfulfillment in the relationship, but is still holding on to the hope for something more.
You hear about this all the time now, but back then there was less awareness or information about it.
But yeah, Elliot had formed a trauma bond with this women who turned out to be a narcissist or maybe even a sociopath, considering how she was a pathological liar, cheater, and abruptly discarded him when she knew he needed her the most, (Oh and she definitely could tell when that was) and felt no remorse.
Elliot had a high degree of mental illness too, but trust me when I say Elliot’s own form of abuse was probably 9/10 reactionary to all of the cruel and unhinged toxic traits she displayed at any given moment. He obviously loved her very much to write some of the saddest breakup songs of all time, and in my opinion ARE the saddest of all time.
Listen to Elliot Smith at your peril. His music is like the Sirens. Be sure to balance this dark with the light.
Are The Sirens similar in lyrical content to Elliott Smith or something? Never listened to them. Looks like an all-female metal band though.
@@BlamingBuddha i think the op was referring to Ulysses’ sirens
Nah. I have no prob listening.
Yeah, he was brilliant with melodies but the tone of his music makes it bad for you.
Imagine a world where he wasn’t miserable and used his talent to make uplifting music.
Truth!
This song shows that he had the ability to compete with those 90s grunge bands if he wanted to. This easily could've been on the radio back then. But Elliot was different and wanted to do his own thing and I'm glad he did.
She's shaking down, I'm absent and numb from shock
Reaching around for the hands of clock
Should've lied
best thing i’ve ever heard
Proof that as a one man band Steven could rock like a motherfucker: The way he arranged and played the drums, the guitar break, even his subtle bass lines. He was the genius everyone says Kurt Cobain was, but more so. He's like an even more talented Chris Bell, another "cult" guy who was overshadowed by someone else (Alex Chilton).
He was somewhat suicidal
Beautifully said!!! I couldn’t agree more.
@@rodolfotheg duh
I always love seeing the Big Star comparisons, seeing how much he loved them. Alex, Chris, and Elliott were all too good for this world.
Who is Steven
actually one of the greatest guitar solos of all time
Best song on the album but hey the album is a masterpiece it's so hard to pick a favorite
I think it's the worst personally. I don't dislike it by any means (I don't dislike any of his songs, and I mean that legitimately) but it's always seemed like the weakest track to me. But hey, to each their own :)
May be his best song.

@@jamesbeadenkopf5429 "Here’s a direct answer from Elliott that can be found in the 4th issue of Comes With A Smile:
Because they weren’t very good! [laughs] I couldn’t remember why I made them up after the fact. I made them up when I was in a state and they didn’t make any sense later. They also weren’t there because that song isn’t about the words; it’s about the way it sounds. I kept changing the words around, making ‘em make more sense but it just killed it. I just left 'em." lmaoo
"It sounds like 'sugar lift me up', is it 'sugar' something?:
Yeah, but I can't say because it's too stupid. I have no idea what I meant by it. At the time it made perfect sense but now I just don't want anybody to know."

Also! , it could be that E.S. is singing different verses each time (check it out) thereby making us all kinda right while Elliot plays a "trick" on us. Also anyone seen "Heaven Adores You"? and.......?
Like nirvana did. It's a good trick.

Lets face it Elliott was a great song writer that put him in the folk section at times. He hated that. Yet when he needed to rock out he could. Kate Bush did the same thing. It is so sad he no longer with us.
This is one of those songs that's so good, it makes me laugh. Sounds like something I'd write, haha.
Sure, buddy, whatever makes ya feel better. Lmao. Guarantee its nothing like what you write. Where's your music? Kinda disrespectful to list *yourself* up there with elliott smith in terms of song composition and lyrical content. He's obviously proven himself as very skilled and has now passed away...What about your catalogue of music?
What you just said is something that he'd never say/think, making me doubt your lyrical content would be similar either.
@@BlamingBuddha Unfortunately, I don't have any of my newer stuff recorded, but search Another Ending Gone Fatgat. After that, maybe try Egyptian Boats. Interested to hear your thoughts, haha. As for my catalog, whether you'd like the songs or not, extends back to 92, so I have a wide variety of styles from over the years. I wasn't trying to compare myself to anyone, in the way you're thinking. I was simply referring to weird chord progressions, etc.
@@BlamingBuddha Jesus why did you get so pressed, calm down
@@BlamingBuddha ouch 🫢
Amazing
I distinctly hear "Sugar, lick me up" but it almost seems like he wants it to sound like "Shoot me up." Listen carefully. Tell me what you think. Also, it sounds like "Sugar lied" after "A stupid kick that makes me reel." Yeah?

Didn't he play all instruments on this album? Good f****** God.
damnit wish he was wearing my t shirt and not my dads haaaa. RIP Elliot, you will never die
I think it sounds like he's singing "Its my life, shoot me up" during the chorus, and I'm sure that that's on purpose.
Not to belabor the point of my interpretation of this fine Elliot song but the real tipoff is the line- "...stupid kick that makes me feel".
stevearle Its atually " A stupid kick that makes me real".
Ah... I love this song as much as any Elliot fan (yah the movies out!!!) but the lyrics, so niftily omitted from the liners... is he not singing "Shooting me up, it's my life" in the chorus?!?!?
No-one seems to want to admit it but from an artist so unflinchingly honest it would not surprise me one iota.
"Should've lit me up, it's my lie," is what he's singing
MidwayX8 well, maybe he's singing about shooting bunk dope he got from under the Burnside bridge with his last $20 which "should've lit him up and now he's desperately trying to pretend that he got well and that's "his lie"....oh shit, that was me, not him! Fuck, i really need to go get my $20 back now. Sorry. Gotta go. : p
MidwayX8 "It's my lie, sugar lick me up"
MidwayX8 Actually he said in an interview that he's singing "sugar lift me up" But he didnt really write the song for the message more of the sound.
Heres the segment :
What are you singing on the chorus?
That’s why I didn’t print the lyrics! [laughs]
It sounds like ‘sugar lift me up’, is it ‘sugar’ something?
Yeah, but I can’t say because it’s too stupid. I have no idea what I
meant by it. At the time it made perfect sense but now I just don’t want
anybody to know.
SupremeIntentionCrew It sounds like there he's admitting that it's "Sugar something" but he can't say what it is, rather than admitting that it's "Lift me up"
this is equivalent to jeff buckley's "eternal life"
love both artists!!
yo... you right
love your radiohead pfp!
This guy can write a fucking heavy rock song, shame he didn’t explore this side more
Listen to Heatmiser if you haven't already - his rock band
Contrary to the real lyrics, I think it was (or was meant to be): "It's my life, SHOOT ME UP!". That's all I can hear or want to hear listening to it.
I might be schizo for thinking this but know 100% this song had different lyrics about heroin and he changed it at the last second. This song was the only song on the album to not have the lyrics in the album. The stated reason was that he had to change them a lot to "sound good" and didn't like the end lyrical result. The original song HAD to be about heroin blatantly, and he changed (or was forced to change it) it to be more kosher and approachable to his audience at that point in his career. Even the song "Cupid's Trick" references Cupid stabbing someone with an arrow or a "dart" and making them feel love.
Wow
