  • In this video, I explain how to make improvements to the composition just by cropping your image and I’ll be covering the sorts of things I consider when I’m working out the best crop for my images.

If the parts of the landscape you include in your photo are the story - you can think of the composition as how you tell that story. An effective composition comes down to how well you present the landscape to the viewer, how well you lay out the scene in the photo, how well you take the viewer through the scene.
A good composition not only guides the viewer through the scene but also minimises distractions that might catch the viewer’s eye.
If the image is unbalanced, it can sometimes feel a little awkward and can divert the attention of the viewer.
If not corrected, these seemingly small things that don’t feel quite right can be distracting or even confusing and end up weakening the image.

Very good lesson and so helpful to watch your actual editing process moving the crop around for comparison, rather than just using before and after shots.

There's a lot of miss information out there where people say that cropping is cheating or your not a good photographer if you don't get it perfect in camera. I used to have a book on photography and darkroom techniques that devoted a whole chapter to cropping. There are also many examples of master photographers contact prints that show that their final image has a different crop or aspect ratio compared to the original image. For this reason I'm so glad that you devoted a full episode to the importance of using cropping as a compositional tool in post processing.

Andrew, do you ever use 'custom' crops or do you always stick to the standard preset ratios - and why? Thanks

I always crop. Sometimes dramatically. But do you feel you are loosing a lot of pixels? Especially for printing.

Some great tips. I think it's smart to crop when you get back to the computer. I try to always shoot wider than necessary to include more than I need, just incase. I like your images, they make me want to return to WA!

I do too, the pixel count on modern cameras is high enough that some cropping is not going to be detrimental to the final output of the image. However, I try to not go too wide that I introduce elements that I'm definitely going to crop out eg overhanging branches...or if I do leave them in, it's with the view that I'll be cloning them out in post.

Probably one of my weaknesses Andrew is not cropping enough, must be the Scottish blood in me not wanting to giving up any megapixels as I've paid for them😂. Definitely worth experimenting though back in post as you said you can transform your images with the right application of the crop tool on some occasions

Like all your videos, this is wonderfully detailed but concise. And like you, I’ll often crop my images in multiple orientations in post, as I often miss the ideal crop in the field, but it becomes patently obvious when viewed in Photoshop. Lovely work, Andrew. 👍🦘
