Portugal were unbelievable that night, was the end of an era for Scotland. Richard Gough was a disgrace. Was delighted when Celtic signed Jorge Cadete, what a player. Portugal is a fantastic footballing nation, great people, respect!

As a Scottish man all I can say is it's coaching your kids to play at this level that counts the Brazilians Portuguese Italians Germans have a winning mentality there taught to do things at the young ages that us Scots don't I believe that's where it will have to change I remember this match and was very disappointed with how easy Portugal won but many other nights for Scotland too I felt the same one day I wanna see a Scottish side reach the knockout stages of a European and world championship but it starts with the kids being taught to win

To be fair this line up from Portugal was as good as any team in the world back then.
Paulo Sousa, Rui Costa became to world class players.
Fernando Couto and Jorge Costa world class center backs.
Vitor Baia was a World Class goal keeper.
Rui Barros was a top player who made it to Juventus in the 90s.
And then Paulo Futre was in his prime before injuries removed it from this super team. Futre was one of the best players in the world and to me the 3d best Portuguese ever.
The bench of this Portugal squad had Luis Figo. Let that sink in.

The amount of Talent in this Portuguese national team was astronomical.
Paulo Futre was a world class superstar.
      Luis Figo was benched.
Paulo Sousa and Rui Costa made a superb world class midfield.
Jorge Costa and Fernando Couto became a classic center back duo.
Vitor Baia was one of the greats of his generation.
João Pinto and Rui Barros were excellent players too.
Cadete and Domingos were reliable strikers.
Sadly, Portuguese Federation was amateurish at best. This generation was the start of the revolution and professionalization of our national team structure. The lack of planning and structure made turned it into a shit show and players were left to rely on their individual talents to solve games.
Carlos Queirós, ex United and Real Madrid, was the coach who started this revolution. Much of the later success of Portugal (sometimes with teams of inferior talent) can be traced to this era.

In fairness, you had a really strong Switzerland team in that group, maybe their best-ever and an Italy that would eventually make the world cup final in 1994. No disgrace in not qualifying from that group although they had some brilliant players.

My 1st ever away international (14year old) They could have scored ten that night easily. As a lifelong follower of Scotland and Raith I don't think I have seen either of my teams destroyed like that since (Holland away came close though!)
My abiding memory of this game was how good Portugal were, how terrible Dave McPherson was and McCoist breaking his leg

I suppose it was a bit of a freak result (at least back then), but I wonder if it fits into the category of those games where Scotland went in thinking they could attack and outscore the opposition. George Burley tried this, and 1978 was kind of the same mentality. It's possible here seeing as we had the previous season's golden boot winner, and you can see in the game we kept getting ripped apart on the counter attack. I can't remember what the mindset was coming into this campaign as a whole, maybe there was some complacency post Euro 1992. Maybe it was a bit of a transition period for Scotland too. Whatever it was, not winning our home games cost us big, and we missed those one or two battling, heroic draws away from home here, or in Italy/Switzerland.

    • @gabkoost
      @gabkoost 3 года назад

I guess people weren't aware of the talent present in this Portuguese generation just yet.
Paulo Futre was a world class superstar. Maradona only could rival his on ball skills. He was in his late prime when this Golden Generation was rising after 2 consecutive U20 World Cup wins. If only injuries would have let him join his monstrous talent and experience to this young bunch...
Then you can see a young Paolo Sousa who became a Juve star player and also had his career cut short due to injuries. Nevertheless he had a 5 years stint has one of the best holding mids in the planet. Won 2 consecutive Champions Leagues. Juve and then Dortmund next season before injuries started to pile on.
Rui Costa doesn't need any introduction. One of the last great PURE nº10 of European football.
Rui Barros made it as a starting player in the 1990s Juventus. This speaks enough of his quality.
Jorge Costa and Fernando Couto in the back were world class level all their careers. A classic duo on international competitions during the late 90s and early 00s.
Vítor Baia was a world class Goal Keeper.
And you know you are LOADED when Luis Figo is on the bench and doesn't even play or Joao Pinto, another legendary player for Portugal wasn't even called up.
I am sure that all those young players being new names and Portugal being an obscure league at the time (despite Porto and Benfica doing very well on the european stage during the 80s) made it harder for coaches to assess the level of opposition.

@@gabkoost Indeed Scotland underestimating the quality of this Portugal side definitely seemed to be a factor. Pity you couldn't nick another couple of points off Italy/Switzerland, or you would have qualified. Fair play to Switzerland, with Chapuisat and co, but Portugal definitely had the more exciting and talented team. But at least you started qualifying and going deep into tournaments regularly from 2000 onwards, capped off in 2016 of course!

    • @gabkoost
      @gabkoost 3 года назад

@@thesnickeringhound2549 Yeah. Portuguese federation was a circus show and still unprofessional in many ways. It took this generation to rise and superstars to develop for the entire organization to take things seriously. Since the World Cup 98 that we missed in part due to an atrocious Rui Costa send off when we were beating Germany in their own stadium (ref decided that Rui Costa was walking too slowly when being subbed out), we never missed another international competition.
I am just sad that Paulo Futre was born between generations just like Ronaldo had an underwhelming for most of his prime (although miracle happened din 2016).
