I think this was the day Alan Kernaghan was shown to be not up to it. He's at fault on two of the goals here...
In the space of a month, Kernaghan went from hero to zero. Phil Babb really owes his whole career to the first 45mins of this match.
Speaking of fault of the goals, it's often quoted that Sheridan "got us to the finals" with the 1-3 consolation. Most have forgotten that he was at fault for the 0-3 goal to begin with, so one really just cancelled out the other.
We nearly blew qualification with that game, that was the worst 45 minutes of the Charlton years
that goal Ireland got against Spain put Denmark out. just like the goal against Mexico put Norway out too.
Republic of Ireland were a truly dreadful outfit.
So many good technical players who, thanks to the tactics of their manager, were reduced to basically launching long hopeful balls forward and little else.
Wrong, Charlton introducted modern pressing into international football and we took full advantage

They tried playing proper football prior to Charlton and never got anywhere.
8 of the 11 who started v England in 1988 were already capped under the previous manager, yet he couldn't figure out a way to get the team qualified.
this Spain game was the start of Ireland downfall 1994 shows Mexico and the Dutch loss. euro 96 with Austria home and away loss. the 3-0 loss to Portugal play-offs loss to Holland. not forget the home draw to northern Ireland and to Liechtenstein too.
