  • Jimmy Crute out with FOOT DROP. UFC 261 was filled with multiple leg fatalities. Cute was taken out by Anthony Smith after a series of brutal leg kicks. This was very similar to the Poirier vs McGregor fight which ultimately ended in a Dustin Poirier victory.
    Lower leg kicks are becoming an effective way of crippling an opponent in the UFC ring. These kicks were adopted from muay thai style of fighting. Fighters are not currently used to defending against these kicks, but will quickly learn how to given the effectiveness of them.

    Why do calf kicks work? Well simply, they cause enough swelling in the muscles around the calf to compress nerves responsible for the function of the leg. In this case, the swelling compresses the common fibular nerve (or the common peroneal nerve). This nerve is responsible for lifting the ankle up (dorsiflexion) and everting the foot. Once there is enough swelling, the athlete develops a foot drop and is no longer able to lift up his foot to move around the octagon or kick strongly. Essentially the foot gives out on them and the rest his history.
    This is what happened to Crute, and why the doctor called the fight between rounds.

    Thanks for the short and comprehensible breakdown. Personally, I think targeting the peroneal nerve, is valid as aiming at any others part of the body, it's to the fighters to protect themselves.

      Yea for sure. Fighters are going to have to learn how to protect against these kicks.

    Thank you for that break down. I use to do mma and we always targeted the thigh. Amazing how quickly the sport has evolved. From what I understand this kick is devastating. I am interested in knowing the most destructive area to attack. I ve noticed some target closer to the knee ( like what u r describing ), yet others target lower on the calf. I ve heard that the lower calf kicks can cause severe damage ( possibility requiring cutting it open to drain the fluid ). I would really like to see a video showing the lower calf kicks and the damage the cause. Thanks again.

    are there any other similar nerves you can target? new viewer here btw, nice to see women talking about MMA. i liked and subbed :D

      Thanks for the support! Basically any nerve in the body can be targeted, if one knows how to cause trauma or swelling to the area. The unique thing about the peroneal nerve is that it’s situated in an area that is pretty vulnerable to leg kicks. No other nerves in the leg, tend to be as vulnerable. Usually your sciatic, and femoral nerves, are buried deep within muscle, and well protected outside of conditions including compartment syndrome.
      We can see some of these injuries in the upper extremity as well - mainly caused by trauma or overuse. One will commonly see injury to the axillary nerve following a shoulder dislocation. You can also have injury to the brachial plexus from neck traction and a chokehold.
      That said and done, medicine has never failed at showing me new and more complicated things. Sports like MMA, are a Goldmine for different injuries.

    Dana white said he though it was more than a foot drop and that the knee didn’t look right. Did you see any evidence of this? Could’ve been from the kick or maybe from walking on an unstable and numb leg?

    • @SonamMD
      @SonamMD  3 года назад +1

      There was definitely an element of a foot drop as you could see Jimmy unable to lift up his foot after the final hit. As for his knee - when he fell, he collapsed in on his knee and could have sprained his MCL. The other thing to consider is a fracture at the head of the fibula.
      The kick essentially caused acute trauma to the nerve which allows you to work and stabilize the ankle joint. Once that was impacted, Jimmy was unable to weight bear on that leg as we saw in the video.
