    I had watched the video about how to memorize choreography/combination quickly some time ago and noticing I'm an audio learner made such a huge difference to me! My sons dream is to dance for NYCB . He has been told that his skin color and starting late will hinder him from being a professional classical ballet dancer , much less NYCB. Next week is his audition for SAB . He is completely stressed but also focused. Last year he got into PNB but everyone says the auditions are like night and day. If you can talk about what they look for with boys his age for summer and year round . Sorry such a long comment . We love you and watch your videos as soon as they are posted !

      Marian Bradley good luck to your son! Don't be stressed about skin color, the world is changing! And there have been dark skinned male principals in NYCB and all the top companies. If he's talented and hard working, that matters so much more!

      LA Fresh Life Thank you so much ! I know moms are biased but my son started Ballet two and half years ago . He had to dance with 5 year olds and worked his way up to being accepted into PNB, ABT , and several other SI’s with scholarships. This child decided to leave public school to train during the day and evening . The happiest I see him is when he gets something right when he is dancing . He definitely has the passion because even when it’s hard , stressful , heart breaking he gets up to go back . He has been told his long skinny arms and legs are ugly and he should be doing hip hop . After all that he still continues. This month has been extremely stressful because of auditions and the first big step to his goal . I can’t control the world or what will happen with this . All I know is that he has never wanted something so bad and worked so hard. I just want him to finally be happy and achieve his goals eventually.

    • @LisaMichele
      @LisaMichele 6 лет назад +3

      If he worked his way up that fast then he probably has something! Even if his true dream is NYCB, there are so many opportunities to enjoy dance and ballet even if it doesn't work out. You have a good perspective, you can't control the world. The only thing he can do is try his best, and hopefully it is enough! Once again good luck to him! Try to help him enjoy the process, and show him that the satisfaction really comes from challenging himself and growing and learning, and the PROCESS rather than a particular outcome. A good outcome is only icing on the cake! That is such an important life lesson that he can take with him through his whole life :)

    I heavily schedule my rehearsals so that everyone is completely utilised for the period of time they’re there. I’d rather have everyone leave the studio feeling productive. We have two mantras at our academy. 1. Inside every performer is a beginner who fell in love. 2. Dave is equal parts inspiration and perspiration; focus on one & you’re only halfway there.

I have learned a lot from your videos, especially your commentary videos and Q&A’s, and have been blessed with great teachers who have helped me advance quickly in dance. I say this as a psych nerd, not a dancer (at all!), look up memory techniques. I have no idea, but I assume those can be transferred. When I was learning drug pathways (I'm a med student), I changed the name of the reaction to fit a story in my mind. I imagine if you made a story in your mind of seeing or saying those moves, maybe even use your own words it might speed up the learning process ^.^

    Katie I love those q&a videos! Your tips are so useful! I have a couple of more questions for you. 1) Do you have any tips for pique en pointe? I often bend my knee when I do it and that's very dangerous. 2) In your Pilates video a few weeks ago you said that exercises like squats and lunges aren't good for dancers and I was wondering what other common exercises we should avoid and why. :)

    I haven't been dancing for very long, but ballet is something I really have a passion for and I'm working hard towards being able to dance professionally. I go to a public high school, and I need my classes picked out soon for next year. I want to take honors/AP classes to prepare myself for a future in case dance doesn't work out. However, those classes are time consuming, and I'd like to spend my time improving myself in terms of dance. Do you have any advice on if I should take AP/advanced classes or how to juggle school and dance at the same time? I love your videos and always find them helpful. Much love❤

    • @meowingwool

      I'm from the UK, so I haven't done AP classes (but A-Level which is a qualification for getting into university and is similar to the first year in American College) but if you have free spaces, do work during those. see if graduation requirements can be
      Also there are careers relating to dance where you aren't a dancer - like sports science, physio, choreo and education. My cousin as she is getting old to dance - she's mid 30's now - so she's moved from contemporary dance to choreographing of the company group she danced for and she also lectures in mixed ability (able-bodied and disabled together) dancing at local universities. So studying subjects relating to dance - like biology, physics (biomechanics) chemistry, dance (if that's a thing I'm not sure) could mean that you could then study at college/university to be a physio or sports science person who looks after dancers at a dance company. Also even something like a language could be useful as dance is very international and you could still end up anywhere in the world.

    • @nalabees
      @nalabees 5 лет назад

      I took all AP classes and still had time to spend at least 5 hours a day on something out of school. You don't have to pick either or at this stage, unless of course you were accepted into a ballet program that required you to do distance learning.

    Question for you: At the age of 12, how many times did you take ballet class per week? How did you deal with homework? Do you usually train by yourself at home whenever you don’t have class? I am struggling with school now but I want to become a professional dancer. Pls help me

  • @nalabees
    @nalabees 5 лет назад

    I'm a little torn on the go to every audition as a class/practice thing. Dancers flooding auditions that don't have any interest in the spot is certainly a thing, as there's usually a chunk of the "competition" that have zero interest in accepting it, if offered. Once in awhile I think it is certainly useful and having some "practice" auditions is great experience before going to auditions you really want. However, when it gets out of hand it takes attention, time and consideration away from the dancers who actually would take the spot.
    Plus the more dancers that show up "for a free class" the more incentive the entity running has to charge a fee, even if they don't normally charge, to attempt to slim the pool down to serious applicants only.

  • @yunsuuu

    Thank you for this Q&A! Amazing questions from Daltrey. I am a university student majoring in literature. I try to be motivated and inspired by dancers because I admire how dancers show the essence of life and energy on the stage and they really have to extract that essence from every muscle and every bit of your mind. Watching that kind of perfection and effortless beauty sometimes makes me feel guilty... because I sometimes half-ass my writing or my reading because it doesn't 'show'. Well not 'showing' is, I know, an excuse because the amount of dedication you put in it will still make a difference even though it's the same A+. I like to think of my writing as dancing; the transitions are as important as the big chunks of ideas, you have to project your ideas to the readers, etc.. And your advice of not letting that little girl down helped me motivate myself for the new semester(in Korea semester starts in March) and the daily grind it would bring.
    Thank you always for the graciousness and beauty you bring to us!

    Katie, hi! I have a question about setting up a space for practice at home. I have a space in my garage, not very big, maybe 10ft by 10ft. I want to get a small barre, and be able to practice ballet (on flat and pointe), and tap. My question is, what would you recommend for flooring? It's a rental space, so it can't be permanent. Does I have to get a sprung floor, or could I just get away with foam matting and a marly? I can't spend a fortune, but I want to make the best space possible.

    I was wondering if you could do a video on ordering pointe shoes online and sizing and finding the right shoe? I feel like every shoe I try on feels blocky and in the local dance stores they don't have that many varieties so I have to order online. Do you have any sizing tips?

    Hi Katie,
    G.Balanchine said:"Ballet is woman",but he was not talking about female choreographers.Why a majority of choreographers are men?

    When we apply for the next scholarship can it be a lyrical video or does it have to be ballet only?
    I'm loving your videos! Especially this one! The list of questions was a great idea Daltry ! ( hope I spelled your name right)

    I'm a male and I'm 15, I'm from Poland and we have a really, really bad ballet school here, where they destroy kid's dreams and learn them nothing. I'm from privat ballet school leaded by Natalia Maria Wojciechowska and she's is a great teacher.... But she's a female. Girls have like every day class for point shoes and one class a week for female variations and for us, boys, there's is just one class a week called Boys Ballet..... I'm happy that there's even something like this (it's a new thing) but it's still not enought. I'm really stressed out bc of how much I don't know about a male technique and I'm worried that I will not make it to anywhere with such training but I can't change my school bc it's the best I can get in Poland. Can you please make a video for young male dancers? Like with some ballet dencer's blogs or youtube channels if there're some. I'm not expecting you to teach my about male technique but to maybe help my find something that will help me.

    Hi Katie! I was wondering what tights you recommend that look good with Freed pointe shoes? I know you used to wear those shoes with City Ballet...I was just wondering if you had figured out a brand of tights that match the color well and don't clash. Thank you! -Ella

    Sorry for asking if you have shared this info already, but where do you get your earrings? They're beautiful! I need help finding pretty earrings for non-pierced ears. They are so difficult to find.

    Can you do a video (or at least talk about sometime) on how to make your thighs smaller, specifically inner thighs, for dancers? Or maybe just how to keep them in check and not make them bigger. I see videos and articles for regular people, but dancers have muscle there, so I was just wondering what your thoughts are on this, especially since this is something that I struggle with.

    • @meowingwool
      @meowingwool 6 лет назад

      Dancers are gonna be muscly - we need muscles to do everything. Like pointe work requires muscles in the thighs as well. I'm barely 50kg (8st/ ~110lbs), I'm a size 2 in the US (EU34 and UK6).
      I do not have a thigh gap. At all. I am not a pre-pro ballet dancer either. (Bit late for that but I do dance regularly with performance opportunities)

    Lately, I've been having a hard time breathing and catching my breath (in class and at home) i feel wheezy and sometimes lightheaded, but it doesn't happen all the time. I feel like I should tell my parents, but they're a little overprotective. I'm afraid they'll say I can't dance. what should I do?

    how do I find a point shoe that fits my arch? My teacher fixed my point shoes by bending them but she said that I should find a shoe that doesn't have a 3/4 bend cause it is much lower but I don't know what that means.

    Hi Kathryn, I have a question
    I've been training in vaganova method all my dance life, but now I have been awarded with a scholarship in a ballet school but the thing is it works by the Ceccheti method, can you give me advices or tell me what to expect from this ballet method? I have tried Cuban (because is the most common here in Mexico), Royal and Balanchine but I prefer the Vaganova method and I am afraid of not liking that much the Ceccheti method.
    I hope you can help me and also excuse my english, I'm a fan from Mexico and as you know my mother tongue isn't english.

    Hi, Katie!
    Ive been auditioning this year, hoping to land a trainee or apprentice position. One of my most desired options was Joffrey Ballet. However, they said Im not a fit for the trainee program, and accepted me into the summer intensive. Ive gotten trainee offers from two other companies. But Joffrey is so reputable! Should I attend the summer intensive anyway, in the hopes they ask me to become a trainee? Or should I accept one of the other offers Ive gotten already? HELP!
