For someone doing a critique of the car, you'd think he'd know a few simple things, like the spot for a cup holder on the right side of the center console, on the passenger side. I am the sole passenger most of the time, and I suspect that the majority of the time, the Miata is a single passenger car . . . For me, the right side of the console is a good spot for my cup holder.
But at one point he is right: You just should not use it in such a beautiful car and risk spilling it all over the place once you found a nice curve... :)
Your couple gripes are actually positives, because the poor cup holder placement isnt permanent, and the side mirrors just need tho little circle ones you can get at any auto store. Competition has the built in angled mirrors and they just make me dizzy and dont work. At least Mazda leaves it up to you. Neither of these issues bother me since when Im shifting my elbow is well in front of cup holders, and when im not, its resting on my leg w elbow on center rest.
You can insert the cup holder in the passenger side cup holder slot. Doesn't have to go behind your elbow . Might be a reach but I think it should be doable .
Good review. This is lovely so long as one does not know the existence of the magical Honda s2000; then, some will not go back to a Miata. The s2000 continues to be the "big tiger" in the room when considering the Miata---and, a better value proposion. The 9K redline Honda s2000 F20C engine, winner of multiple awards, is in a different league.
Because Honda lost their way... Granted, sales were down due to a very difficulty economic recession--one of the worst times in the auto industry, 2009. Further, the Miata was built with production longevity and a broad customer base in mind. The s2000's pure driving experience is not for everyone; it was about making an engineering marvel at a point in time, celebrating Honda's F1 and Racing History. I was never about sales. The press released below. The s2000, although it had a 10 year run, was " envisioned as a limited-edition tribute to Honda's 50th anniversary, S2000 production was extended in response to customer demand and critical acclaim...." www.autoblog.com/2009/01/26/officially-official-honda-s2000-to-be-terminated-at-the-end-of/
+sungod1976 Honda has lost their way....now we have the CR-Z and not the S2000. And the Civic has lost any hot hatch status and Ford is mopping up with the ST and soon to be RS.
+sungod1976 i have to agree, the s2000 was and still is a legend of a car. it did for roadsters what godzilla (the nissan gtr) did for the super car genre. if mazda were to shoehorn a reworked 250hp 6cyl engine into the mx5 / miata, then this would be more on the money. or perhaps returning to their rotary roots and dropping the rx8 engine into the mx5, that would be tasty.
Funny. I had a 2002 (NB) and currently own a 2016 Club (ND) I constantly get stopped and asked questions, get compliments, etc, with both cars. . . I see S2000's, and nobody seems to look at them twice. Today, I was driving and passed an S2000. The driver nearly broke his neck trying to get a better look at MY car. . . And lastly, you ALWAYS read about the handling and amazingly good manual transmissions in the Miata (In EVERY iteration). Yet you never hear, or read of anyone talking about, or pining for the S2000's transmission or handling. I wonder why.
It could be. I was paying $104 per month for a 2016 Miata. The insurance carrier was State Farm in Texas, USA. I am well over 25 years of age with no tickets on my record.
FBGM I have yes. There's a Honda dealership next to my college and they had an S2000 onsite so I test drove in in my break. And MX-5 you can find at any Mazda dealers. S2000 is in a different league.
Why are you calling slower S2000 better then ND Miata? S2000 is heavy as tank and have no torque. I know it is slow car, that can easy kills you, but I won't call it better.
You're comment is unsubstantiated, Qasim. Perhaps this will help you out: ruclips.net/video/2Nq1ATP2qtE/видео.html Watch the last 90 seconds or so if you don't have time for the whole video.
They're both great vehicles. However, the S2000 is notorious for being a target for thieves. To such an extent that I've seen people have their garage doors ripped off the tracks to get their hands on a prime example. And this is in the upper middle class suburbs! Not worth the hassle when you have so many other great choices (like the ND Miata) out there!
good review. as you say, some may want more power and so forth. i had the previous model, the nc, with the power retractable hard top. pro's: has go-kart handling, epicly smooth shifting manual box, you just want to change gears for the hell of it, you cant not smile when hitting a country road or twisting mountain road with the top down. cons: fairly expensive for what it is (2L 4cyl small car. i paid $50k aud after taxes), lacking in power, a turbo would fix that, incredibly impractical, you can carry a passenger and a handful of groceries, and thats it. forget road trips or weekend trips with all your suitcases and stuff, it just wont happen. i managed to squeeze my wifes guitar, minus the hard case (!), into the trunk / boot. for alternatives, i would be looking at the subaru brz / toyota 86. similar layout and thrills but more practical without the 'hairdressers car' stigma.
The only people who mention the "hairdresser car" stigma, are those who've never driven a Miata. . . As to power, the ND is easily the fastest Miata yet. Faster than the Subaru/Toyota. In every measurable. And yes, you can take it for a weekend trip with the wife, using a soft sided bag or two.
A fun to drive car that you can live with every day and won't be visiting the repair shop every month
pedrof830 so they are reliable cars

Great car and gorgeous country to drive it through.

Great review, .....enjoyed that. ......such a nice little affordable roadster. .....sure want one ;-)
Dan when are you doing your next live chat thingy?
Dan, was the wind and road noise high with the top up?
The recaro seat optional for the miata ? ?

Hello. American friends. There is one question. Is the mx-5 insurance premium more expensive than a sedan of the same price??
It could be. I was paying $104 per month for a 2016 Miata. The insurance carrier was State Farm in Texas, USA. I am well over 25 years of age with no tickets on my record.
👍👍👍👍Good review👍👍👍
Personally, I like the Club Edition - even with some of its quirky features. Hey - isn't that what driving a roadster all about?
'What can you buy for the money that's rear wheel drive, so capable and fun to drive?'
Perhaps a second hand S2000 that massively out performs this.
FBGM Yes, massively.
