Installing Linux & Windows in Dual Boot: CORRECT PARTITION SCHEME & BOOT LOADER SETUP
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 31 мар 2015
- In this video, I will cover two important steps of Installing Linux alongside your windows OS.
1) Choosing the correct Partition scheme
2) Setting up your Windows Boot loader to boot to Linux instead of Linux bootloader (e.g : GRUB)
During a standard Linux installation, a user do not have to worry about this. But when you are trying to install Linux in separate partition, keeping your current OS, it gets little trickier. If you do not configure these two options correctly, you might end up corrupting your bootloader or previous OS installation.
I will also show how you can add your Linux os option to the Windows 8 bootloader using BCDedit. This is important so that in case in future if you decide to get rid of Linux OS, your computer boots normally without any issues. - Наука
I really appreciate this tutorial. I have had dual boot using grub several times and with negative results. This way works well. Thanks.
You are a very good teacher. This worked with Mint Linux as well. Thank you so much.
I have tried with so many videos. All are failed by some reason.. but I have tried this. It's working fine now. This is great ever video.
Thank you Sir..

Thank you so much dedicating your time to create this pretty much useful video!!
After having my pc reset after deleting linux(having linux boot loader), now it is finally done with dual booting, booting both zorin os and Windows10
I will try this method, I watched a lot of advices on RUclips about dual booting, but I think this is the more professional, easiest, and cleanest way. Keep up.
Excellent, Vineet! (hope I got your name right). I just used the process to install Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3 on Windows 7 Ent. 32-Bit. Perfect dual booth. Keep up the good work.
This is by far best video I have seen on dual booting.
Same, very thankful that I found this one!
Yeah I almost cried.

Best video explaining the correct method of Dual Boot booting and not corrupting the bootloader.
This has helped me a lot thanks a ton.
I need some help how can i reach out to you? Instagram maybe?
I followed every step you did. Ubuntu is in Windows bootloader. But when I select Ubuntu, it gives a black screen saying Windows failed to Start.

does this work with uefi?
if i install ubuntu in a different hard drive and don't copy the linux bootloader into c, then changing the command as
bcdedit /set "paste the id" device partition=d:
will it work. please help.
bravo! magnifico. ah one question, can I do this to all linux distros? especially ZORINOS 15 Core. thanks for sharing.
Thank you, very clear explanation, you even teach linux command full names (much much easier to understand ad memorise this way)! This care to details is much appreciated!
Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work :(
My configuration slightly varies from yours (but back then I basically followed in your footsteps: i installed grub to the ubuntu partition without touching the mbr one) and I didn't send the "ubuntu.bin" file to c: right after the installation (several months after it instead) but nevertheless the file was created in windows 10 and the boot menu entry was added...after restarting and choosing the new ubuntu entry the bootloader "crashes" giving this error:
File: \ubuntu.bin
Status: 0xc000007b
Info: The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
I also tried using shimx64.efi and grubx64.efi as paths for the entry but i always failed to chainload to grub...
Guess I have to give up and embrace grub in all its might :D Thanks a lot however, learnt a lot with the help of your video!
Of course my laptop uses UEFI so I think (just a hypothesis here, can't provide evidence) your method is aimed at legacy BIOS devices...can't even guess why it doesn't work with uefi however :|
Please help, I tried mint and Ubuntu but each time I get it everything works fine but on the language selection it doesn’t show the try or install, only language, and also in the installation types it shows nothing except for a drop down and a single file in the main div. it’s almost like the more options for Ubuntu but without the options... any thoughts?

In the beginning, you never covered how you partitioned the D or F drives... Did you partition with windows? Which format did you use? I mean, I don't want o screw up my windows install to begin with. Also, what if we want to multiboot, using a second hard drive for the Linux Distros? Please help!

I installed Kali Linux 2016.2 and while booting into it I received a message telling "ERROR: /autoneogrub0.mbr not found and the STATUS: 0xc000007b was displayed.I could not boot into Kali. Do you have any solutions for that? I have faced the same error while trying to boot in Linux Mint.
Thank you so much for such a great tutorial. It worked for me.
Just few questions...
All the windows partitions are mounted in linux. Can i unmount them ? Will it cause any boot problem? If i unmount, can i mount them again without any problem?

It seems to works with ubuntu, what about Archlinux based distro like Antergos ? Actually I can't see at 6:18 any modal of installation complete and can't enter thoses commands. More over, it's ubuntu's commands and I don't think It would work on Antergos / Archlinux. Have you an idea to makes this work ?

Hi,
Thanks for the great video in easy steps with helpful explanation.
I'm trying to install UBUNTU 15.10 on Windows 10, and getting a problem after installation process complete.
That is:
I've no problem till this step that is "mkdir /mnt/share"
Then I tried to run next command "mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/share" that throws following error.
"Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened.
The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which
could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command."
Note: (sda3 is the drive where windows 10 is installed)
Can you please help me if I'm missing something.
Thanks
Atul

Hey!! Brother
I m using dual boot windows 10 and kali kde in 2gb ram so tell me Does dual boot affect system performance???
Hello XPSTECH,
How would you do the same with CentOS 7. As you probably know, CentOS 7 does not let you select the partition where you want to install Grub2 bootloader.
The only option CentOS gives me is to either install Grub2 on sda(master boot rec) or not install Grub2 bootloader at all.
I've tried installing CentOS without the Grub2, then sign into Windows and use EasyBCD to point to the partition CentOS is installed. However, that didn't work.
Any clues as to how to install Windows and CentOS while keeping Window bootloader?
I'd appreciate any comments or help on this issue
Great quality videos by the way.
Thank you.
is that the same 'dd' command that I am reading warnings about - that cannot ever be removed?
Is it possible to use windows bootloader if linux is on a separate drive? Would be nice to have dual bootloaders on seperate drives for backup.

can you tell me XPSTECH how to install dual boot in vmware and rhel 7 and windows 10
Failing to mount because the ntfs partition is in an unsafe state please resume and shutdown windows fully(no hibernation or fast restarting.) *plz help dude, what to do? 😩
I am aware that this video is a little older, so you probably won't answer me, but is this video still valid in a Windows 10/ ubunutu 16.04 constellation, or have the steps changed? I know many people like grub, but I prefer the simplicity of the windoes 10 bootloader, since I use Windows 10 as my primary OS.
Thnks for the informative video by the way. Most guides simply end with Grub being the default bootloader.
Dude you're the best
This is the the perfect one for linux installation 🔥🔥
I followed the instructions. It is showing dual boot options also but when I click on Ubuntu I'm getting error. Ubuntu is not loading. Pls help.
Thanks for the video. Can I apply the same way in Windows 10?

What about KDE neon installation in Windows 10? Great video. I plan on using this method if at all possible.

Would this method work with Windows 7 and CentOS??
Can you please do a video for installing arch linux?
Excellent tutorial..thank you :)
An excellent introduction to partition . thank you. M.
Hi Carlos! Thanks for watching.
Yes. It should work with Windows 7 also as it also uses BCDedit for changing Boot Manager Settings.
Does this work for UEFI?
XPSTECH Boss, you wrote bcedit /create /d .... you wrote d because you installed ubuntu in d drive? I am installing in e drive.
mnt/share/ubuntu.bin: No such file or directory
what to do now
can i do same with kali 2.0 & win 8.1 ?
what if i want to use grub bootloader instead?
Hello XPSTECH,
Dear Vineet ji,
I have watched your video and I have completed both the steps, it worked wonders.
BUT after applying updates on UBUNTU 15.04 through "software updater", it may be possible that it had updated the grub boot loader also and now, it is not booting-up the UBUNTU 15.04 through Windows 7 boot loader although it shows Ubuntu on Windows boot loader...it may possible that it needs updated "ubuntu.bin" file...
Please help...
It was such a nice video by the way, please upload more video like this.
thank you...
Sir does it works on UEFI mode and GPT disks?
Ubuntu 16.10 after suspension its not waking , how to fix this?
Does it work in GPT / UEFI?

Thanks bro, you are awesome
1000 super likes bro... 👍👍👍 nicely explained... please update more videos... I am very much impressed by your work... I will personally share others to subscribe you... ✌ ✌
I lost the ID for the boot loader I created. How can I delete it without the ID? 🤔
Watched again... thank you very much.... Hand wrote all commands! Wow...
So I give anyone a small suggestion. . .
when partitioning their drive, is to make a small partition formatted as FAT32 partition between Windows, and Linux that is say 5 or10 to 15 GB, so Windows, and Linux can both see it. And you can copy docs, files and folders etc to it, and than when in the other OS / Dual, or Tri Boot, you can, see, and use those files in that Fat32 Partition in all OSs!
It would be Share partition, or whatever the next LETTER / d, e, f that Windows wants to use!
Or you could have set that up when installing Ubuntu as a Fat32 partition first and than the Ubuntu Partition, and do all the dcdedit stuff then for that next partition!
Might work with VMware, or Virtual Box.... but I have not tested it yet, but should work as any other VM should see the Fat32 Partition!
Q: when i have 2 ssd one for windows and the other for linux, this could prevent windows for corrupting the partition?
I mean, I heard that sometimes windows corrupts the other partitions with its "updates". How to prevent that from happening?
Ouch! I sure hope not.
