    "A video of people basically."
That's because it is a video. That's Rand Miller, one of the creators of Myst (he created Myst with his brother Robyn). Rand played Atrus for the original Myst games. All the characters you see in the original were recorded for the game. They didn't start moving away from live action video of the characters you interact with to 3D models till 2003 with Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, later called Uru Complete Chronicles, (also known as Myst Online: Uru Live). Uru and Myst V: End of Ages were the only times until Myst 2021 (and now Riven 2024) they had used 3D models.
Guessing does always work. When I played the original I just clicked repeatedly until the dome stopped. I do have to say the dome is a new way of traveling. I remember the trams from the original Riven.

I loved watching an interview with Rand Miller! It’s really amazing how Myst paved the way for future games. I’m also very interested in checking out Uru

@@ErinCaseyGamers And sadly their partnership with Ubisoft almost did Cyan in. Rand was close to closing up shop when Ubisoft pulled the plug on the online version of Uru a couple months into its open beta. They gave Cyan enough money to rework the unreleased online ages for single player (what became the expansions To D'Ni and Path of the Shell) and to make End of Ages. After they released End of Ages, Rand laid off a lot of people. They limped along for awhile until Gametap partnered with them to bring back Uru's online portion. Then Gametap severed that relationship a year later and they limped for a while (mainly only porting Myst and Riven to iPhone and iPad). It was with the help of a kickstarter that they finally made a new game, Obduction, followed by another kickstarter for Firmament.

Aye, a lotta stuff from the original was changed, surprisingly enough! That even warranted some changes to the journals of the main characters.

Wow....color me a bit disappointed. The original Riven used some black magic for its graphics or something, between prerendered scenery, animation and video footage. Myst III got close, but they never really got that level of grit and stunning realism again. All the unrendered 3D Myst games that followed resembled rough early 3D modeling of the time. Cyan seems to have come only slightly further in that respect. Seriously, these models and rigs animating these characters are stiff and shaky. I thought maybe they'd up-res all the old scene frames and maybe AI restore the old footage? Cyan can do better than this. Seriously, look at the old Riven and Myst III.
