This game sold so many CD ROM drives back in the day so people could play the game. Also, if you haven’t seen it, Ars Technica did a documentary about this game and the creator that is fascinating. Definitely worth the watch if you have the time. It’s under their video series called War Stories.

When we'd visit with other people who we knew also played Myst, we'd compare notes while meeting what things have I figured out, what things have you figured out... The other popular adventure game was Return to Zork but dang that game was so difficult, an especially given you can miss something early on and cause the game to be impossible to beat later on without restarting.
This was great. I hope you will play Riven too! It’s more difficult and more engaging. Although you will need to read the books, if you want to understand what's going on - but maybe you won't?
Myst was absolutely spellbinding and amazing for its time. But it just has NOT aged well. Not "like milk" bad, but.....more like improperly stored wine. Still drinkable, but it has an unpleasant, vinegar-like taste.
I remember watching my parents play myst and riven since I couldn't figure out the puzzles. I got myst 3 and was able to do most of it by myself. I had to prove to my dad that I solved the final puzzle without looking up a guide.

You missed one bonus area, I don’t remember how to get to it off the top of my head, but it’s not important, just a short area designed to show off the new graphics in the RealMyst remake (the version you’re playing) If you want to find it it’s called the Ryme Age and there should be a new book on the floor of the library that tells you about it after you’ve completed the game

Atlantis: The Lost Tales. Is a very infuriating game like this from 1991. Would be great content. The sun dial part made me want to sudoku as a young boy.

Almost everyone who writes about this game or makes a video about it goes on and on about how successful this game was. What nobody seems to remember that it was bundled with pretty much every new PC back when it was released.
Myst is sooooooo much better than the witness. Blow got it so wrong with the Witness imo. Especially as this game was already there for decades to learn from. Myst's puzzles are integrated into the function of the world and as such are world building, making the entire world far more intriguing and enjoyable to explore.
Holy crap you can play Myst free roaming? Originally you could just click forward and get another still. EDIT: Aw man, the videos of the brothers in the books were way better than this.
Myst was a great game for its time. You have to remember it came out at a time where most games solutions were completely nonsensical or just completely collectathons where every "puzzle" was usually get these items and try them on everything. The problem for me is the whole game is full of red herrings and dead ends. Also a lot of the puzzles can be brute forced. The ending was also bullshit. Reading the lore and trying to understand the characters was a waste of time.
