    Late in viewing, just finished all parts. Best thought out bag I've seen on RUclips. Quality all the way with the philosophical understanding of its intent. Well done sir. I've been a student of preparedness since early 80's. You've virtually hit every point that I have learned over the years. You can never have too much on the tarps and plastic sheeting. Only thing I would add and it's just me, extra socks, underwear, maybe a light t shirt, long john.
    All 3 chapters are in my favorites.
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the final comment about the fact that backpacks like that are becoming unwanted in some public places. People get even more frightened when I carry my briefcase to college. There is a video of this motorcyclist that uses backpack covers that are water proof and that truly helps to blur the military looking backpacks. Great video man.

    You have created another excellent video. Thank you for running through the contents. You had three items I had never considered previously. 1) Folding reading glasses with a hard case, 2) Battery capsules - I have seen battery cases before but never the capsule version, 3) The clothesline. Well done! Scott

    Must be one of the best vid's on Get Home Bags I've seen, and I've watched a LOT of them. I can see that this vid and the detailed list took a good bit of your time to put together. I just wanted to thank you for going through the trouble to do it. I has helped me tremendously. Please keep up the good work w/ your vids.

    A well set up and tidy bag, well organised and not just chucked together!! I would lanyard the torch on the shoulder strap though, i have the same set up, (different flash light) and also a whistle and a rear red/white flashing strobe for safety, I also have a military personal distress strobe attached to the shoulder strap too, i like your set up! I really liked the skeleton water set up, i have one of those pouch types that you didn't bother with, might have to swap! Thanks for the tip.

    Great videos all three. I think you have everything covered. I have a black cordura backpack and, sometimes, I attach my knife upside down onto the strap so it be handy. As it has a black plastic sheath it is concealed, I even put some electric tape on the lanyard hole so it is almost invisible. Instead of having your knife hanging on the back. Cheers.

    Yes, you are correct. My Katadyn Pocket Filter and Swayer Squeeze are both better than the Frontier, but in my opinion, they would not my first choice for a short-term 24-hour bag, especially given that the bag is already equipped with water. This bag is only designed to address a long walk home or perhaps one uncomfortable night on the side of the road. It clearly falls short of a full-blown 72-hour bag. As for self-defense, do you mean firearms? Thanks for your post, much appreciated.

    Hi JimmyGunXD556, Zombie Tinder is a relatively new product. I’ve only seen it at the Canteen Shop. They come in a round tin. They are about the size of a cherry. I think it’s just a play on words by the manufacturer. It’s nothing more than a fancy name for a fibrous material wrapped in a flammable wax casing. However, they do work. Enjoy.

    Ditch some of the flashlights. You only need 1 on you at all times and 1 in the bag for redundancy. Instead, just bring a couple extra batteries. I don't use those egear gaurdians and instead I use a Glo-Tube powered by a AAA which I keep a couple extra of. It has low, high, and strobe. I have it attached to a lanyard and a titanium carabiner on the outside of my pack so that it can be used to mark me, places or equipment. The lanyard can be wrap around a belt loop when I walk at night without the pack or hung from something. I also use it like a mini lantern. Then I don't need the chem lights either in my pack. I keep those in my car trunk to mark an accident if there is fuel on the ground and I can't use my road flares.

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  10 лет назад

      I added a Nite Ize Cinch Marker to the pack. It is lightweight and effective. It is also easily removable and can be worn
      on a belt loop or wrist. This added reflective
      glow light allows me to have adequate coverage in the front and back. I also threw a nice Emergency Strobe inside
      the bag just in case. It has an Xexon bulb
      and emits 50 -- 70 pulses a minute and can be seen up to 3 miles in clear
      conditions. It has a run time of about
      60 hours. I also tied reflective
      paracord at all of the strategic points on the pack. I have more signaling capabilities, tools and
      extra batteries in my truck, including enough food and water for 3 days. One of my next priorities is to revamp my 72
      hour bag... thanks

    Hi Qomowale, Heater Meals are basically hot meals that will stick to your ribs and sustain you for a period of time. They can be purchased online at Heater Meals Dot Com or individually at Cabela’s. Online you can find a case of 12 for about $56.00 US dollars. Cabela’s sells a pack of 3 for $20.00. Heater Meals Plus are more expensive at $88.00 a case and only last about 1 year. The ones I purchased have a shelf-life of about 2 years and Heater Meals EX will last up to 5 years. Enjoy.

    TBH this is probably more comprehensive than most peoples BOB. I note that you say you have a whole separate thing for that but realistically you probably have enough bedding, calories, hydration options and fire to last 72 hours if you had to and for its size its surprisingly effective at that. Most BOB’s are double this volume and i would feel far less comfortable with them… it shows what you get when you spend a little more money on gear

    great video and gear, very similar to mine, down to the anti bacterial wipes for bird baths and hygiene. the only thing I would suggest is that I have a small portable power cell that I can use to recharge my cell phone via USB connections. I'm presently looking into communications ie. a ham radio, i'm doing research on it now.
    again great video and gear, wish I could afford that knife LOL

    everybodys environment is different.
    I work 5 miles from home, rarely travel more than 10 miles from home. urban setting, within my 5 miles pass a high school, a shopping center with many businesses, a bank and (2) C stores. As I work a later shift (coming home after sun is down), main emphasis is safety, thus a reflective safety vest would be a must, even a light joggers vest would be better than standard clothing.
    Additional a change of socks and zip ties to seal pant legs to prevent bugs, ticks or snow (depending on season) from entering clothing. Sunglasses can be a great asset, especially when sun is reflecting off snow banks. A head covering to prevent heat loss, winter gloves.
    summer head covering (beach comber style) to prevent sunburn for the hours may be walking.
    You have more than I think is needed for a 2-24 hour get home time frame. additional if weather or disaster, would you trust the kindness of strangers to take you in (snowstorm, stranded), if not why would you be crossing their property, which to me means staying on the roads. With others traveling and emergency situations (police/fire), cabs (you got money), I would not expect to be walking the whole distance.

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  8 лет назад

      +Yogi Lilly Hi, I don’t believe I have more than I need, because I really don’t know what my situation might be one day or where I'll be. If I knew that I would be totally prepared all the time. I can be more than 190 miles from home depending on the day and some areas are very rural. If I’m hunting or fishing, I can be much further. I would rather have it and not need it, than not to have it, but I hear you, this kit is not for everyone, especially for someone whose geographic footprint is only 5 or 10 miles. For me, it’s about taking personal responsibility and not depending on others. Respectfully

    • @yogililly884
      @yogililly884 8 лет назад

      +TheAmericanOutfitter in your reply to Rachel Martin, you state do not need a change of clothes as this bag is designed only for a 24 hour displacement period, so being 190 miles from home (your reply) is not this bag.
      the average person walks 3 miles an hour, the average military march in a day is 20 miles. giving the uncertainly of terrain, time of day (you are prepared for an overnight stay), possible weather factors, etc. if starting out would need to within 30 miles from home for a 24 hour bag to be effective. if your planning on a 72 hour situation then you have mislabeled this video/bag.
      As you state walking home, means no using or acquiring a bicycle or other means of transport, no trespassing on others property, means either staying with the road system or being in a park. With a desire to be found if lost, or not be a causality of auto accident, high visible safety vest is a must.
      Taking the 30 miles or less to be covered in 24 hour period, using a map/compass from your home draw a 30 mile circle, this area is what your 24 hour bag should be designed for. I live 24 miles from Lake Michigan Summer Fest grounds in Milwaukee. In Milwaukee County and mine are about 1.4 million people. Not to use help when help is available is foolish, how about needing to see a doctor or emergency room, if your house is on fire you would not call the fire department, when your car breaks down not calling for service or having your car, furnace, air conditioning, etc worked on by a professional... how self reliant do you really want to be. Admit some have chosen a very isolated lifestyle, but those individuals are not posting about 24 hour get home bags.

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  8 лет назад

      +Yogi Lilly Correct. I do not have a change of clothes inside the bag. The only garments I have in the bag are the wind resistant jacket, beanie hat, poncho and gloves, plus whatever I’m wearing. The bag is not mislabeled. 24 hours of comfort is what I would expect out of this bag. The food could be stretched longer, but it is not a 72 hour bag. It’s too small and too poorly equipped for 3 days, but if I stay with my vehicle I’m definitely good for 3 days.This bag alone allows me to be comfortable for at least a 24 hour displacement period. I have many options at my disposal if I choose to abandon my vehicle (shelter, food, water, fire, first aid and signaling). Who knows, one day I may be broke down on a logging road or stuck in a snow bank. If I were in the mountains, I know I can stay dry and walk safely to the next town. That’s the premise of the bag, to be able to walk a long distance in a remote area. It is not to walk the entire way. I think all of your other assumptions are just that, assumptions.If emergency management is not of any interest to you, simply reject the topic. I’m not trying to convince you that this bag is right for you, nor do I have any opinions on your lifestyle. That’s none of my business.This bag is not foolproof and it will not address every circumstance, but perhaps it will help me one day. I like being proactive and prepared for my own wellbeing. It is about taking personal responsibility, but it is not necessary that we agree. Respectfully

Again great bag! Will you have another bag in addition to that one a mini bag to strap on it? Also i noticed you didnt have a firearm is that something that you wouldnt concern? Hello just watched your video's (3) and enjoyed them. I have the max. vulture pack and after spending a$100 plus for it I felt it was a bad investment on something that's used for emergencies only ( like earthquake, flooding, tornados) otherwise it will sit waiting to be used. Your kit is VERY nice (and expensive) you don't have or didn't mention a way to protect it or you, I'm sure you got that covered;-) But although you say different, it has all the same things that someone going camping would have am I missing something or what??

  • @reb0254
    @reb0254 5 лет назад

    I've been following these videos. You're doing a really nice job, showing useful products, and products that many of us aren't familiar with. But, if this is just a get home bag, why do you need a knife sharpening kit for what shouldn't more than a three day trip? And I'm having a hard time with the 24 pounds.

  • @theXaint
    @theXaint 10 лет назад

    Thank you for the excellent videos! One of my concern is that the insides of the pack are black and that might make it difficult to find items inside (especially in the dark). At least this is my experience with another bag I have. Is there a way to counter that, or another brand that makes a bag like this with visibility interior (orange for example)? What's your experience?

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  10 лет назад

      Zoltán Sághy Yes,
      this is an issue with dark interiors. Dark colored interiors offer little contrast
      or distinction. This is area where many backpack makers can improve. Eagle
      Creek does a great job at offering light interiors on some of their bags and
      Eberlestock and other high end makers have recognized this issue. I have too many
      bags with dark colored interiors, which only help to conceal dark items. I usually
      hang a Streamlight Nano Light from the draw cord or zipper to help offset this
      lack of contrast. Thanks

    nice reading glasses how much were they? Do you have a link for them? The Maxpedition 5" Bottle Bag will work for that Pathfinder Kit.

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  9 лет назад

      shadomane Hi, see if this link works for the folding glasses. They are Foster Grant Men's Gideon Folding Rectangular Reading Glasses. They are ultra-compact. The Maxpedition 12 x 5 Bottle Holder (SKU 0323) will work with Pathfinder 32 ounce SS bottle. The bottle/cup kit might not fit. I have the Maxpedition 10 x 4 Bottle Holder (SKU 0325) and it will carry the Pathfinder bottle by itself. The problem is the cup. I can force the bottle and cup into the holder but the fit is super tight and it is a real pain to remove the cup. That’s one of the reasons I use the ITS Skeletonize system. Respectfully @184

      TheAmericanOutfitter Yes I have the same Pathfinder kit and the bottle bag that it came with is the same size as the Maxpedition 5" Bottle bag. I also have the same Maxpedition Falcon 2 in black and I also have it set up as my EDC get home bag. Coincidence eh.....lol

    Excellent set up. Very well planned and organized. I look forward to more of your videos in the future. What pack would you recommend for a long - term scenario? Two brands I've been looking at are Eberlestock and Granit Gear. I haven't decided on which brand or model to go with. I know they both tend to be on the heavy side, but I'm thinking the quality would outweigh the weight (no pun intended). Thanks again.

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  10 лет назад

      I don’t generally make recommendations because I do not represent any of the vendors or makers. I also like to encourage everyone to do their own research since it is their hard earned money but you are certainly headed in the right direction, IMO. If you are looking for a premium lightweight pack then Granite Gear, Gregory and Arc’teryx would be on my short list. If you are looking for a premium hard use pack, then Eberlestock, Kifaru and Mystery Ranch would be on my short list. These are the big dogs. Again, IMO only. For long-term excursions, I prefer packs between 60 - 90 liters. No pack is prefect and no pack will do everything, but you generally get what you pay for. I have a V69 Destroyer as one of my large packs and it screams quality. All the best.

    • @dragland7268
      @dragland7268 10 лет назад

      I'm looking for a hard use pack. I've narrowed my search a bit. In Granite Gear, I'm looking at the Chief Reece and Chief Patrol. In Eberlestock, the V69 Destroyer, F4 Termimator, or J79 Skycrane II for its versatility.
      I'm looking forward to more of your videos. Yours are honestly one of the most well thought out. Thank you again for your time.

      @TheAmericanOutfitter  10 лет назад

      dragland7268 The V69 Destroyer is a very well equipped conventional pack. It is a premium pack and will handle 65 lbs of gear for a serious winter load-out into the mountains. The F4 Terminator is another awesome choice with even more room. It is very functional and easy to live out of, but a bit heavier than the V69. The J79 Skycrane II is the big daddy of them all and can hold more weight than most can carry. It is very versatile and can be broken down or expanded. It is also the heaviest and most expensive of the three. Happy New Year.

      depending on your spine size I would go with a Kelty pack either the Kelty Red Cloud Junior Backpack - 64L or a smaller version of the red cloud, I have the Kelty Lakota 65 Backpack I use for for multi day hikes and my Falcon II for day hikes.

    What about a spare change of clothes?

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  10 лет назад +2

      Rachel Martin Hi, a spare change of clothes would not be practical for me, but it may be a
      viable option for others. My get-home-bag is only designed for a 24-hour displacement
      period and I can’t see needing to change my clothes during the walk home. I
      just need to stay dry. Also, there is very little room inside the bag to accommodate
      such luxury items. I think a change of clothes is a more realistic necessity for
      a 3-day emergency bag. Have a nice day

      You should carry an M9 bayonet by ultimate arms gear, that knife can chop a tree and cut some wires, plus it can be use in combat situation you'll have an upper edge than your current knife of yours.
      I chopped trees with my M9, my knife is awesome I feel like a Rambo with it, it's fun to throw it too in the trees.

    Why isn't it recommended to bring this bag to the shopping mall or sporting event sir? This bag looks really cool and it's something I'd like to use to go about.

    • @TheAmericanOutfitter
      @TheAmericanOutfitter  11 лет назад +1

      I would not bring it to such a setting because it is likely to attract unwanted attention from law enforcement or security personnel. This bag will not make it into a modern sporting event because it has no business purpose and backpacks are now banned from most venues. You will be denied access for sure. Moreover, the knife may be illegal in some jurisdictions. If you scale down the bag, I’m sure you can make it more inviting for EDC use. Thanks.

    Great 'Get Home' bag! Pretty pricy, though. Combined everything in that bag is at least several thousand.
    I would add three things to this setup:
    1) Two way radio
    2) Satellite phone with emergency channels
    3) Solar charging kit.

Plus I have at least a gallon of Poland Spring’s drinking water in my truck. Fortunately, in my region there is water all over the place (streams, creeks, ponds and lakes too). The army canteen is another good choice. Enjoy the holidays.

      Hi Alex Hill, the Falcone II is only 1520 CI or 25L. I would classify it as a nice capable day pack. It may possibly serve some as a weekend pack, but not me. IMO it’s too small and not adequate for a three day excursion. I generally need 3000 - 4000 CI for a three day outing. Thanks.

      It’s only a small get-home-bag and not a bug-out-bag, but I spend a lot of nights in the woods without a firearm. I do it all the time. I feel safer in the woods than I do the city. I do have plenty of defensive choices, but I focus more on the realistic threats like exposure and hypothermia. I would freeze to death before Sasquatch ever got me. Thanks.

      Now, please don't take this the wrong way but... What is up with you Americans? Do you need a firearm to go everywhere? I have been camping in the woods (deep woods, not camp grounds) for years and I have never had the need for a firearm. There have been times when I would have given a toe or finger for a match but never a firearm! Maybe it's a cultural thing, Canadians just don't see a need for having a firearm when camping, traveling, or going to dinner... Americans on the other hand would be comfortable carrying a firearm anywhere, it's just weird is all. And again, don't think I am anti firearm or anything, I own firearms, I just don't feel naked without them on my person. Now a cell phone on the other hand!!!

      jonathan aviles lol kinda like a condom I guess. Yeah I guess, if you have the right to carry one I guess you would but I just do t see the necessity. Mind you we do t have cougars here, the only threat would be a black bear and they scare off easily enough. Unless a bunch of biker type raccoons got to making trouble ;) happy camping!

      Edwin White
      I did not
      discuss self-defense because I figured it was a very personal decision and everyone
      could simply decide for themselves.
      I would not take my
      Maxpedition emergency pack camping. It is too small and not properly equipped for me. It does
      not contain a complete sleep system or tent. It also lacks sufficient food and comfort
      items. When I head into the mountains, my backpacks are 50-60 lbs. My load-outs
      are ridicules, but very pleasurable. I don’t play around. Thanks
