Idk. I absorbed myself in countless videos and came out the other end with what works for me. Anyone that teaches Ben Hogan style techniques is what you want to look for imo. SagutoGolf fast tracked me into single digit handicap land. He is terrific! You are right though when talking about new golfers.
I think this is the best piece of advice I have heard in so long. I have tried so many things and got worse. When I go back to what works fir me, a bit ungamely perhaps but I'm sticking with it. Thanks again Miles.
Right on target. I learned this years ago watching said Leadbetter , Jim McClean, etc. and reading all the golf magazines. what I found is it is very difficult to mix and match. If you do what one says in the back swing , you cannot do what another says in the downswing, etc. etc. As you say, pick one teachers and learn his or her method, and simplify as much as possible. Practice the technical stuff while not playing, but once on the course focus on tempo, timing, and rhythm. My buddy and I play once a week and very seldom practice. We are both in are mid sixties, and play to an 8 handicap. But again, as you stated, I play for fun and enjoyment and never get upset with a bad shot or a bad round. But I am constantly reminded my buddy, who is always upset, that his expectations are way to high. "We only play once a week and never practice", I tell him, "yet you expect to break par every week." Blessed is he who has no expectations, for he will not be disappointed.
Exactly. I see some guys at the course, in the late afternoon, just practicing their chipping or their bunker play, for an hour - that stuff is critical in dropping your scores. If you are not going to do that, and only play once a week, unless you have a history as a scratch golfer you can hardly be upset if you don’t get up an down all the time, or with a few poor shots every round.
I basically watch three pros on RUclips . Tom Saguto, because he simplifies the golf swing into keeping your weight on your front foot, turning your lead shoulder down toward the ball on plane, and hitting the ball first. Jim Venetos even simplifies the swing even more. He supports turning your lead shoulder closed, stating over your lead foot and don't move off of the ball during your backswing. My swing is kind of a combination of both. I pattern my swing after Saguto's left shoulder down toward the ball, and I do turn my lead shoulder closed a bit at address, and concentrate on keeping my head steady during the backswing. Then, I watch Danny Maude for scoring instruction like chipping, putting, etc. I have recently shot 73 from the members tees, and I'm 82. So far, so good.
Agree. The golf swing takes only 3 seconds. Take the club back inside, take the club straight back. Don't turn, turn. It took me years to find my swing. I now take the club back with quiet hips. Not straight back, not inside. Just back. When I start to feel the club going up, I just windup. Works every time.
You are spot on! You can watch ten different online coaches and every one will be a bit different leaving your mind swimming in what to do. Great video Miles. ✌
Miles, coach here...Thank you for saying this out loud, you are 100% correct. The other problem is that most people just learning the game dont understand what their body is doing to make corrections in the first place. Its like your car that needs new tires but you change the oil instead...lol
The main channel I watch often is Dan Grieve's where he's teaching nothing but the short game and his teaching style and techniques never change. So it's all about repetition and practice. Once I'm happy with my short game, I'll stop watching. And I love "Golf Life" - superb channel!
A wee cup of tea and an enjoyable video to start the day. I have watched loads of golf instruction videos and the "5 second tip that will cure your slice/hook/thin/fat shot forever" and 20 minutes later you get the important piece of information you wanted. I prefer the short and to the point videos and tend to ignore any over 10 minutes. Usually these videos assume you have an athletic build that is very flexible and you have a great range of motion forgetting that most people are the exact opposite...
Bang on! I've got high handicap mates with awful setups. Shoulders 45 degrees off line at address, bad grips etc. I'd get every new golfer to perfect their grip and play with their feet together until they improve.
Hi mate only watch RUclips but have given up on technical advice and only focus on mental and game management. My favourites over the years are GolfSidecick , Gen Ling from Malaysia and Ron Chopper.
i've been golfing for 50 years and been through it all, 100's of books, magazines, videos and youtube. i take my golfswing seriously but not the resulting scores as much because i like to have fun while playing and golf is just a difficult sport to be really good at. i've been a 13 hdcp. for 30+ years and if i was gonna have a major breakthrough it would have happened by now at 74 years old but always trying. i have three swing styles i use one is an armsy fred couples type action, the other is a hogan pivot driven action and a kind of modified hybrid stack and tilt action which seems to work the best for consistency. i try not to mix them like you say but may change from one round to another as to how i feel what will work from one day to the next. golf is hard for sure and goo golfin' to ya.
What a timely message (for me, that is)! Thanks for helping me to hear the same message that my wife says all the time!! 😂😂😂. It’s true - I get bogged down looking for that magic video solving my buttercut fade, but it simply doesn’t exist in video format. I just need to play the game with the swing I have.
Hi Miles, people are happy with ODF golf tips, one day fix! what you said about the grip is what 95% of people ignore, i highly recommend the GOOD GOLF COACHING CHANNEL. Stuart knows the swing but most of all no sweet talking B/S just to keep people coming back.........People have to start with the grip always, and Stuart will explain and show you in a way that you have never seen before. Lovers of this beautiful game embrace the basics and the rest will follow. GOLF IS A GAME FOR BOYS YET IT BREEDS MEN. UUUMMMM just ask any low H/C golfer, and even the best in the world would agree........ Miles love to see content like you have presented in this video.............GOLF IS LIKE LIFE,FACT!
While I agree you can get caught up in the weeds of golf instructional videos like I did for 6 months trying to learn golf, however you can also find things that work. I came across the Single Plane Swing videos by Todd Graves and taught myself the positions he teaches via the videos. After a year of switching to the single plane swing I went from a a new golfer shooting over 100 to now breaking 80 a couple times and consistently shooting in the mid to low 80s regularly. If you stick with the conventional swing it is probably harder to diagnose the problems you may be facing as a golfer but with the single plane swing if I hit a bad shot it's because I fell out of sequence with one of my 5 positions. It's very simplistic and just makes the most sense.. start at impact position and return to it.
Hi Miles! I may book in a lesson with you soon (based in Gosport). I used to be obsessed with golf YT training videos, and I just became far too overwhelmed. It was only until I watched Bryson DeChambeau’s golf swing video that I started to play better. I use one length irons, but could do with some help on contact and set up. Will be in touch 👍⛳️
Paul Wilson from Las Vegas, and Dan Grieve from Woburn are the only two coaches I've really tried to base my golfing on. As I high-handicapper, it is still a struggle. But, some of the things seem to be working for me.
I have watched many videos also, I feel I've taken all into account and then focused on a few things and worked on that. I feel I've gotten comfortable with my swing, now it's just practicing it.
Miles Spot on , that was me watching video after video and handicap getting worse !!!! A few lessons with you , play and practice and now have handicap @ 19 down from 30 withing 6 months. Have now unsubscribed these channels.
I couldn't agree more. I watch Steve Johnstone, Sophie Walker for technique and Golf sidekick for game management tips. I'm reasonably happy with my game and like most I have the occasional great round within several bang average ones. Play well!
I skipped 27 years of golf because of my chronic slice. Late last year I started again and have over 75 vids I saved in a playlist. Last year I could swing at 150 balls on the range with my driver and hit less than 5 straight. All the rest were wicked slices out of bounds. I hit my third bucket for this summer just a few days ago, which was 54 balls and only 3 were slices. I couldn’t have reduced slicing without all the videos I watched. I do tend to stick with one channel though.
Well, that - sticking with one method that fits you - I think is the point. There are dozens, maybe hundreds of different swings, and as many different ways of teaching. And many of them are based on fundamentally different swings paths and thoughts. “Swing with the arms, swing with the shoulders, rotate your torso, don’t rotate the torso, fire the hips, don’t fire the hips”…..I could go on and on and on. Even the same basic concept can be related many different ways in terms of what you should “feel” in the swing - even by the same instructor - and that is OK. Some people relate to one swing analogy, while another description will resonate with a different person. But I think you need to pick a teacher who has a complete method of teaching the setup, grip, stance, posture, backswing, downswing. Otherwise, unless you are already a pretty good golfer, taking a tip here or there can be confusing and counterproductive.
@@scooter5940 For awhile it was confusing but not conterproductive. Nothing could make my slice worse, but I was continuing to slice just as many balls at first until Danny Maude's videos clicked in my head and actually worked. Once I understood both the how and why of the inside-outside swing path, many previously saved videos from other experts began to make sense when I went back to them. I think people get stuck watching lots of videos when they don't know the main problem that's causing bad ball strikes. However, that's the nature of trying to learn from videos because the watcher is a world away from being an expert, and also not physically there to be analyzed by the instructor. It all seems like a bunch of snake oil and used car salesmen until something works. I'm glad I never gave up.
i agree, yet disagree. there is a universe of videos, it's unbelievable. i have been playing for less than 2 years in total. have taken lessons and yes, watched hundreds of hours of videos. i have also read a good number of books, and spend a lot of time on the range and chipping area, and putting greens. i have practiced much more than played, but now i'm playing more. i have been confused, and tied up in mental knots as you mention, but i have also learned a tonne, and sorted out a lot of the good from the bad. there is a lot of simple key stuff, and lots of technical questions answered. i'm a technical person, so a lot of biomechanical stuff has been answered. but you're not wrong. it can be problematic. one thing i will say, 100% for certain, is never, NEVER watch that Pete Cowan guy. he may be able to coach PGA pros, but it's a big mistake for anyone else to watch him. he's a disaster and a terrible communicator on camera.
I played golf regularly 15 -25 years ago and got down to 12 handicap (albeit it very briefly) and I thought, Wow I can see that single figure handicap banging on the door, so I dedicated a year to having golf lessons once a week. Oh my !! It put my golf back a decade trying to understand the upper flange sprocket bracket of the hypotenuse angle of deflection ?? I have just recently returned to golf after that 15 year lay off and probably hit the ball better than I ever have, but more than that, I now enjoy the game again with an open mind not cluttered (16-18 Hcp)
Great advice. When I get addicted to the RUclips “instructors” I always turn to the great John Jacob’s’ instruction. Mr Jacob’s had a way of making a complicated movement sound simple and logical. Works every time.
I learned from your youtube instructional video titled "Stop watching RUclips instructional videos" is basically not to take a practice swing pre approach shot. Thanks for replacing your divot....
Agreed ,if you know the basics then only temperament is reqd. But most golfers struggle with basics. Some youtubers are doing good job. Also watching highlights of matches helps a lot. Though most youtubers earn by keeping you engaged for ever and ever.
Agree. It can get difficult chopping and changing with different You Tube coaches. Something can work for a month or so, then unravels. I've been watching videos for 30 plus years, lessons too. Find one and stick with that one coach if you're going down that road. Remember, we are all different.
Well said 👏 Most of the creators are just regurgitating the same rubbish be it instruction or equipment reviews and bordering on click bait just to get their view count up to get a few quid from you tube. If you want to get better, support your local PGA professional at your club. They are there to help you.
This may sound harsh and I don't want to discourage people. GOLF IS HARD! Not everyone that picks up a club has the athletic ability/talent to improve significantly. The number one thing, in my opinion, to improve at golf is having or developing the hand eye coordination to strike a golf ball cleanly and consistently. If you lack this ability, it doesn't mean you can't enjoy the game. It does mean that you should manage expectations and practice, practice, practice. It's the way I taught my kids. Just hit the ball and don't worry about where it's going. If you can hit the ball, everything else can be fixed. I've had a playing partner that has been playing with me for 30 years. He has studied the golf swing ad nauseam for decades. His swing is gorgeous. Can't hit the ball. He lacks the ability to find a consistent bottom to his swing and put the ball there every time or make the adjustment to strike the ball. The mind is there to understand the concept but he cannot put it into practice. He is constantly trying to figure out what is wrong. What is wrong is he has no athletic ability. The one thing he cannot master is striking the golf ball. He has however, learned to manage a good short game and become a great putter. These are the things he embraces to still get enjoyment from the game. Get out to the range and just try to improve your ball striking, work that hundred yards or less and spend hours on the putting green. Never mind what these pros and gurus teach, these types of drills assume you can strike a golf ball and have a solid grasp of the golf swing. Consult a local teacher that connects with you and manage your expectations. I see too many people that expect way too much from a game they don't put much effort into. These pros are world class athletes with ultra sharp hand eye coordination. No amount of tips and drills can replace that. This is one game/sport that allows golfers the ability to directly compare themselves to the elite of the game. There aren't many other instances in life where you can put yourself to the exact same test (par) as the elite athletes in a chosen sport. How would you do if you jumped off the couch this weekend and played a game of Major League Baseball, or football, or cricket, or boxing? Give yourself a break and just enjoy the game. GOLF IS HARD!
I have all the David leadbetter DVDs and your absolutely right to stick with one person, It's so confusing watching You tube and funny when everyone claims to have the secret sauce for your swing 🤭🤪🇺🇲
Guilty! The best is a real instructor and although I watch youtube, I discard most of the technical ones and weirdos. Love Dan Grieves though. I find the short game the hardest to practice and learn, can’t do it on the range and the practice areas are few and far between. Love his videos where he is teaching real golfers.
Can you imagine all these videos on how to swing a baseball bat, or stickball bat or an axe ? Somehow we all learned how to do those things without hrs and hrs and hrs of lessons. The golf swing though different is also very similar to swinging a bat, just bent over a bit. How many of you have watched videos on swinging a baseball bat ?
Thanks for that. No one teaches you how to shoot a free throw. You just do it. & everyone adapts a variation of form best for the individual without instruction. No one teaches you really how to throw a ball, even to bat.
Absolutely bang on.. A natural golf swing exists within us all, unfortunately the PGA say the clubs has to be swung in a specific way, I call BULLPOO. I had a lesson or should I say “natural swing reset session” with Marcus @ GRF Golf, amazing experience. Not once did he tell me how to hold the club, how to swing it, how to move my body, absolutely zero “golf instruction” yet I walked away hitting the ball exactly as I wanted with ZERO swing thoughts. The biggest issue following my reset was having complete trust in myself to just hit the ball where I want it to go with zero swing thoughts, when I get into the correct frame of mind then my game is big time next level…. Zero mechanics in a golf swing, it’s all natural ability. Take a look at GRF Golf 👍🏼
I find I have better results on the course when I spent more time on the short game aspects, pitching, chipping, sand bunker, & always putting, especially lag distances & short putts from 5 foot & in. When playing and I have a bad shot, I just say calmly to myself, “That was interesting”, and move on with no physical or emotional outbursts! All golfers hit bad shots, pro & amateur, so just play and enjoy the day…it’s just golf! ⛳️
The biggest problem is that you may (or may not) be going down the right path with your new RUclips swing method. You just don’t know. But… here’s a piece of advice from Bryson DeChambeau which I think is invaluable when doing it yourself, which is- ‘if your new swing thought is not helping by the third shot, drop it’
You can look back at any of the RUclips Golf creators and you can see the same old information rehashed every so often. There is nothing new under the Sun, especially when it comes to golf.
Exactly, each golf school is different from the other, what works for one would not work for the other, like cooking recipes, adding another ingredient can spoil the initial dish...for me when I add something new to my swing, it works at first, but afterwards, my whole swing is ruined, I think it erases things that I was doing unconsciously...morality...following a single chef.
I only watch pga pros who can shoot even par on a course… everyone of the RUclips instructors couldn’t break 85…Bryson & Padrig are my go to instructors
Absolute bull. I’ve gone from unable being able to strike the ball to being very comfortable on the course. I use vides while I’m at the range, pause them so I can practice certain points. Every form of education has been transformed by online tutorial, golf is no different. It all just depends on the teacher. Time to adapt!
Spot on..too many people who know F all trying to re invent the wheel..nothings changed imagine Bobby Jones, Henry Cotton,Peter Thompson, etc etc gi ing any credence to the shxxte they talk these days
The Real SECRET to golf is that the ball isn't the TARGET. You've got to learn this for yourself..! Ingrained bad ideas are deadly to your game! Choose your teacher carefully,grasshopper....
Golf instruction on RUclips is almost useless, same with golf club and golf ball reviews....you find a club you like and get fitted.....golf balls need to played to get good sense of which ball works for you...
Idk. I absorbed myself in countless videos and came out the other end with what works for me. Anyone that teaches Ben Hogan style techniques is what you want to look for imo.
Great advice
Tiger said the same thing, he said stop watching YT for golf instruction and get proper lessons and practice. Cheers.
At 65 yrs old I dearly wish I could get back all the time I wasted on YT videos, books, etc.
Tiger said the same thing. Beat balls, play as much as possible.
Your divot went further than my ball goes!!!!
Stop watching youtube videos about golf, while watching yt videos about gold😂
Stop watching? Yeah, right. 🙄
👍🏼
8 iron, 170yds?
Yeah what's the loft of that 8i?
Spot on..too many people who know F all trying to re invent the wheel..nothings changed imagine Bobby Jones, Henry Cotton,Peter Thompson, etc etc gi ing any credence to the shxxte they talk these days
Where is that golf course that you are the only person playing?
@@jjflash1645 southwick park in Hampshire I just grabbed a few quick holes between groups it was fairly busy
@@laklandmusicman Got it. I’ll drop by the next time I’m in the area.
Ok.
Uncommon sense. Dou
The Real SECRET to golf is that the ball isn't the TARGET.
You've got to learn this for yourself..!
Ingrained bad ideas are deadly to your game!
Choose your teacher carefully,grasshopper....
Sorry didn’t watch it 😳
Dude >>>>>GET OFF YTUBE >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>and work on your swing!! that's what you should do!!!
I just stopped watching
So boring ….
get to the point
He did right at the beginning. Pay attention.
No RUclips video can match a golf lesson with a pro.
Golf instruction on RUclips is almost useless, same with golf club and golf ball reviews....you find a club you like and get fitted.....golf balls need to played to get good sense of which ball works for you...
