Thank you for making this! When I first dated my husband nearly 30 years ago, he took me with him to his friend's Chinese New Year's celebration. Back then I ate gluten and meat, and the celebration was amazing (though the fish with the head on it freaked me out.) I've had to be gluten free since 2007 because of a gluten intolarance, and I miss crab rangoon. Another one I've missed is shrimp shumai, so if you want to make a gluten free, vegan twist on that, I'm extremely interested.
You've done it again! Does that surprise me at this point? NO, of course not!! Bonus gluten free application when I was short on time; I made a version of this filling recipe and used it stirred into long rice noodles when I was too hungry for any extra steps. Spoiler alert- it was flipping delicious! Thank you, as always, Rockstar!! Hail Mary!
It’s awesome that you found a great substitute for wheat flour, courtesy of one of your lovely subscribers. You have a great community here and on Instagram.
Loved the old timey music because this is a truly vintage [Pan]Asian-American resto recipe! So glad that you can enjoy these again using the helpful suggestion of cassava flour for the dough; hope you can use it to replace wheat flour in other dough recipes! Thanks for posting : )

Hello! I've used buckwheat four instead of wheat flour in some recipes too. Usually I replace them on a 1 to 1 ratio. The dough is still quite delicate compared to a dough with gluten, but it's yummy! I love your videos, by the way!
ouu i'd love to see how cassava flour performs in something puffy like a steam bun! i use cassava flour all the time for desserts but never thought to use it for something like dumplings :o
I could do with a full blog post identifying the differences between these flours! In my head cassava, yuca and tapioca are all the same so I'm really confused. I'm brazilian btw, I'm just genuinely lost on the translation hahaha I need images for reference 😅
@@elisaninis I don't know how other places label it. But here Cassava, yuca and manioc are all names for the same root vegetable. Cassava flour is made from the peeled whole root. Tapioca flour is made from just the starch of the vegetable. It's also called tapioca starch.
This will be so cool to try out on my gluten sensitive friends! I'm just imagining the look I'll get when I serve these. They'll wonder why I don't remember that they can't have wheat products. Then they'll be so surprised when they find out these are Crab Rangoons which they can actually have!!!
Thank you so much for sharing, Mary :) Always excited to see you pop up in my feed. These look divine! Seafood is one of the things that I loved the most, so being able to reintroduce some old favorites back into rotation, animal-free, is a delight
This recipe looks amazing Mary can’t wait to try the gf wonton wrappers! Quick question though would the cassava flour wrappers work well in steamed dumplings as well?
Another great alternative to VWG is fonio flour. I made some vegan burgers, 2 with vital wheat gluten and the other 2 with fonio flour. Spoiler alert, the fonio came out much better. They were more firm and had a better chew than the VWG.

Looks delicious! and Happy lunar new year! OK, so my comment, I am guessing these are not Burmese...have you tried, "must try" Burmese salad, Lepet toh? (AKA fermented tea salad. You might want to try it out, this fermented tea leaf dish was a strangely delicious flavour of Salmon...(without the gross fishiness!) I am going to try making a vegan fish with it, using some of the fermented tea to get that real salmon flavour. I sure would love you would try this too! But, fake fish or not, this salad is something else.
Sometimes I'll feel nauseous when I dehydrated so I'll take a little pinch of salt and some water. Or vegetable broth with a slice of ginger in it. I hope you feel better!
And why don’t we need kelp flakes? I’ve watched several vegan versions of this recipe and no one used it. I’m gonna use hearts of Palm, but don’t wanna taste hearts of Palm!😂
@@marystestkitchen it turned out alright! I didn’t use a lot so it wasn’t noticeably different but I posted a video on my page about it. Turned out quite tasty! Thanks for your tutorial

Hearts of Palm (rolled in an old bay type seasoning) cut on the bias makes a great crab replacement.
