We could only hear it when it was either very clam winds or when the bell (opening) was facing our direction. They never ever used attack, only alert. So the one time a massive supercell was passing us, they used attack. Hearing this sound to this day gives me chills down my spine.
You don't know the characteristics of batteries then. This is most definitely running on a Rectifier (just mains power stepped down and converted to DC).
