Diesel Heater Fuel Pump made SILENT*

- *The fuel pump is totally inaudible when the heater is run at a setting of 2.6 Hz or higher as the blower fan drowns out the noise of the pump. Before building this box I could always hear the fuel pump clearly, and now I cannot hear it even if I am sitting right next to the box listening for it.
I forgot to mention that the box is sealed with caulk.
I know this video is pretty dry, but I think what is shown here is the best way to quiet down the fuel pump, and I wanted to share what I have learned.

All the manuals I have seen on installation say that the pump should not be placed horizontally, because it is the fuel that lubes it and one side (top side) always being dry can wear it out unevenly. Was that an issue for you? Thanks for the video.
This has not been a problem yet. But, I have not run my heater very much since I made this modification. I will update if I have any issues. I still have the original fuel pump with me in case this is an issue...
@@dustyodyssey There will be no issues, it will just stop working one day, that's what I've learned from the other users.
Yes, i thats right…
Fluid cavitation causes bubbles in the line (this is normal and expected). When the pump is horizontal a big bubble forms on the 'top' of the piston resulting in metal-on-metal wear. This will cause the pump to fail or mis-dose. You want the pump to be filled with diesel, which provides the lubrication. The inner angles of the pump best allow the cavitation bubbles to 'escape' when placed at 15 - 30 degrees. Other than that, this is a brilliant setup! (source of info: ruclips.net/video/TGFDFZ6r1dI/видео.html)
Yep, it'll just break; air builds up inside the fuel pump, metal on metal contact will be made during the solenoid action and then; one day; it'll just not.
I fit mine in a pringles tin surrounded by rock wool, works awesome, I was going to make a more engineered version but I'm lazy.
I was thinking of doing the same thing but figured it would be useless...guess I'm eating some pringles tomorrow 😄
@@allanwhite4509 I still cable tie the hoses off anything because fuel is pretty much non compressible, it transmits a slight knock through the fuel itself, but it definitely works well..
@@drewjohn6847 thanks for the tip. I haven't gotten around to doing it yet. I need to fit a longer hose to give me the slack needed to cover up the pump so this job is going on the long finger. I'll let you know how it works out when i finally get around to it.
@@allanwhite4509 update?
hold on, BBQ or sour cream & onion pringles?
I am so blessed with the superpower of ignoring this noise and I didn't realize it until I watched the 10th video on this subject. The amount of effort to divorce yourself from it is astonishing. I know it is a real thing because my girlfriend makes an annoying noise I can't escape when she is exposed to the annoying pump noise.
Best one I have seen is pump placed in Styrofoam cup and then the cup filled with GreatStuff. The foam sealer that comes in a can. It is surprisingly simple and it works.
For me I continue to ignore both annoying noises this heater is responsible for and the second noise caused by the heater is usually silenced once she realizes it is better to be warm than cold. Usually..... Sometimes I find camping by yourself is quite underrated.
greatstuff is flammable at temperatures much lower than the exhaust pipe and heat exchanger get, this is pretty dangerous advice. they even warn against using it around heaters of any kind on their website. don't do it. there are fireproof foams, that would seem to be infinitely safer.
The pump is supposed to be hung between 30°-90° angle otherwise you may get air bubbles. Anyway, if it works, it works. 👍
I must be the only person who actually likes the pump noise! I actually find it relaxing like a metronome I also find the different beats fun but that might just be from my XTC days🤪😋🤣
raver
If you want to keep the hard nylon on the output, you can form a coil with it by wrapping it around something and boil it in water for a while. Remove the core and it will keep a spring like shape. This dissipates a lot of the noise energy and keeps it out if the burn chamber. The whole coil jumps when the pulse occurs, but reduces the ticking noise that comes out if the main air output of the heater.
That’s a really cool idea! Thanks!
Just did this, thanks for the idea.
FYI. If one wishes to learn the theory, operations, proper installation, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of this ICE I strongly suggest John McK 47.
I like your suspension system! I'll employ it although slightly different configuration! Well done!
Nice video! Excellent job explaining the details and your thought process.
As soon as I started looking at quietening the pumps I thought about a microphone shock mount , you're ahead of the game fella 👍
, wow ! , very smart use of the shock cords!
The sound deadening you have, is intended to remove vibration on thin materials, like steel or aluminum. I doubt it does anything to the plywood. In this case, I guess you would need sound absorption instead.
When someone finds that box in 100 years, they're gonna wonder what you loved so much about that pump :)
I have the same result by wrapping the pump in foam and slide that in a piece of 3 inch PVC pipe,
Super smart, easy solution!!! Will do that!!!
was thinking the same thing
Many solutions to the same problem. 😉 I think he came up with a great design that fits his space.
I described something similar to this to someone having this problem. The only thing I’d change would be to have the pump at an angle (as recommended in the destruction manual) and I’d have the outlet on the top of the box and the inlet on the bottom, to not have the pump in a high point (potential air trap) where air can accumulate. Most of what I describe could be achieved by turning the box through 90° along its long access and installing at the recommended angle.
I learned a lesson when my house got burgled and they ripped the alarm box off the wall and wrapped it in my bed quilt. When sounding off the alarm was deafening but wrapped in quilt you could barely make out a slight squeak. So I simply wrapped my fuel pump in foam strips and tape. It’s done the trick nicely.👌
Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Nice, same technology used on shock cord microphone isolation mounts.
I like the sound of the pump. I’ve never put it in a box like that.
That's what I was thinking of doing. Looks like it works like a charm! Thanks!
Great solution. Plywood is a good insulator. The denser the material, the better it'll insulate sound. (Unlike the common misconception that soft materials like foam, etc are good sounds insulators. They're not)
As another user commented, the deadening material is used to prevent the vibration on metal in the first place, it is not an insulator. So it should be applied on the metal where the vibration is created. In this case, the pump itself.
Thanks for the video great idea with the box! Just subscribed
Nice hack to quiet down the pump!👍
dude we wanted to hear it running !!!!
Nice work.
I know the ticking would keep me awake. Great fix!
, lol ! , don't have one of these heaters , but I wondered what extremes folks go to , just quite that pump down! 😂 - nice little sound-deadening box u made.👍
Excellent explanation Thanks
This is amazing.
I wonder if split cable sleeve or vacuum hose over the nylon fuel line would help with noise.
Great job!
Horizontally mounted pumps allow permanent air bubble to form at top of pump … the diesel is what lubricates the pump .. the air doesn’t let that happen..
the pump will wear out prematurely
pretty slick
All this effort to quiet the pumps makes me glad I have mine in a noisy old VW Beetle 🤣
Good explanation to help solved the dreaded tapping curse
I did it very simple to ours. Use a car radiator hose. I am into the automotive sector. So i could get one what perfectly fits around the pump. Only the connector part could not fit. Put at the other site whats is free another thick rubber hose into the bigger one so that a lot of the pump is covered with rubber. Big difference according old situation. You can hear it ofcourse but a huge difference than before and at a very comfy level. Think simpel…..
i was thinking maybe you can use the sound foam recording musicians use ,but you may have to modified the box since some of that foam looks to be at least an inch thick
So just mount the box at 45 degree's.
100%
Hi does your new pump not have to be mounted on an angle like the original pumps?
Good job 👍
awsome idea
Not sure if the "silent fuel pumps" are rated for horizontal install- but the one the unit comes with- can get air bubbles unless mounted at about a 45 degree angle.
I have a feeling a lot of what people say about these is bullshit. Doing your own work like this is probably the smartest way to learn. I've been running probably 20ft of soft line for a while now and it was fine the whole time. Priming took forever, but it worked. Mine is in a rubber holder outside the vehicle and is quiet ish, but I'll be looking into this for the future!
That looks great can you put the sizes of the box you made so I can copy it for when mine come?
Carpet works also good for sound insulation
Spokojnie, paliwo też podrożeje 😃
Great idea brilliant just brilliant I thought the samething about the soft fuel line could you please give the information on who and where you got the new pump from.
This is the first video on someone coming up with a real solution to an annoying problem I have two of these heaters in my bus conversion imagine two clicking back and forth it's the worst.
Anyway thank you for your work here I appreciate your dedication to solving the down fall of this product.
Oh I'm definitely sold and subscribing to your channel and looking forward to what other things you come up with.
Oh no, I can only imagine having two pumps clicking away must be at least three times as annoying. I ordered the pump from China on AliExpress, it is the "LF Bros Metering Fuel Pump 22ml," if you need it faster you can search ebay for "Ultra Quiet 12V 5KW Chinese Diesel Heater Fuel Pump," but it will be about $40 instead of $20. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a consistent part number, but I do believe that these are the same part. Thanks for subscribing!
tip that most people don't know: the adhesive sound deadening material everyone loves, doesn't actually ABSORB any sound. All it is, is a dense material that you can easily stick to a surface. Its meant for large flat panels (usually on vehicles) to reduce reverberations caused by vibrations from the road. Think of waving a piece of thin sheet metal around, then doing the same but with 6 layers of duct tape on the center of it. Other tip: covering an entire area in it is a waste of money. Its just there to dampen vibrations, so put a little in the centers of flat areas, and thats it. use foam for the rest
I think fuel injection line could be used because its really stiff and reinforced. Only I dont know about the sizing.
On he pump, is the bore and outside diamater the same both on both the pull side and push side of the pump? Or are they different?
For the heater side I know I need 2mm inner diamater hard nylon fuel line. But about the conneting fuel line? Don't know whhat outer diamater is on thhe fuel pump.
yeah, I think the ODs are the same. I would just go to an auto parts store with the pump tbh
Is it burning more clearer if add blue to the fuel line? I've planned to make a t-line joint via the 🚽 of my dear caravan. I fear the lue will maybe stink diesel when rise the lid on toilet? And no matches no more the prevent the toilet smells😢
GREAT video. Important question!
Are you also using a BRUSHLESS heater? Are you using a premium brand e.g Webasto, Eberspächer, will a regular chinese be as silent.....does it make any difference?
Thanks in advance
My heater is the cheap “made in china” unit
Nice work. Fuel pump should be angled down about halfway between horizontal and virtical, according to my eber manual. Probably enough room in the existing box to do that. If do not apparently excessive wear.
Correct. Fuel pump should be mounted at a 30 degree angle so cavitation bubble created by the fuel pump can escape. These bubbles are normal and assist in atomization of the fuel. If it’s horizontal air can not escape the pump, where there is air there is no diesel, diesel has paraffins in it to keep the pump lubricated. The piston in the pump will wear out very quickly being mounted horizontal. Also the black fuel line will absorb most of the pressure shock of the pump, but will also not inject the correct amount of fuel (these pumps deliver 0.02ml each cycle) without the hard nylon fuel line it will still be dribbling into the atomizer screen, the inside diameter of that hose is much bigger than the nylon tube. I’d recommend using the hard nylon fuel line then encasing that in rubber hose. Just a few things to consider.
@@andyj986 I appreciate the feedback. I am curious how long my fuel pump will last in the incorrect orientation, I am carrying a spare just in case. Also curious if I will have any issues with sooting since I am not using the hard nylon line. I am going to keep the setup as is in its incorrect configuration and report back if/when I have issues.
@@andyj986 The inside diameter of that hose will not have any impact, even if the inner diameter was 10cm it would just take longer to fill but once full one dose in would equal one dose out the other end, only issue might be with it being softer is if it expands and contracts along its length with each pulse meaning a dribble instead of a burst out the end, but as he said unlikely when the hose is still that short
to take it to the next level, get a strip of sound deadening and wrap it around the pump
I'm not an engineer nor am I saying what I am about to mention is correct. This is what I've heard and read many times.. The fuel pump is mounted at an angle for a reason... I see you mounted yours horizontally... I am not sure but you may want to double check to make sure this is acceptable;e mounting... Well done.
I love the ticking it puts me to sleep
I have found no literature saying that 45 degrees is any better than 0 degrees (standing upright) so you could just make a box that stands upright :)
Quick question… does the diesel heater function well while your van is moving down the road at highway speed?
yes, it works just fine. Just make sure the exhaust is pointing towards the back of the vehicle
Ive built a simlar sort of thing for my pump but it is still slightly audioable at lower pump speeds, Im going to try suspending the whole box from bungee cord to see if it reduces the sound, instead of screwing the box to the outside wall box, Ive mounted my 5kw diesel heater in a wall box on the side of my home and at lower speeds you can still hear the ticking indoors, ideally id like to run it at night on a lower setting say 1.7 Hz but the background ticking keeps me awake at the moment. maybe ill use some screw in brass cup hooks at the top and bottom of the wall box for the heater and some on the plywood pump box and use these to supend the pump box with the bungee cord.
Edit: finally found the time today, it works no more ticking in the house at 1.7Hz setting, I attached four cup hooks to the top of the build similar to yours and four more hooks to the top of the heater wall box at the air intake end of the diesel heater.
and hung the whole thing on four looped pieces of 6mm bungee cord, Id say the ticking is 97% quieter standing right beside the wall box outside, my neighbours will be pleased as its esspecially quiet around here at night in a rural area in a valley where every sound travels a long way.I realise this isnt very practical for a mobile home or van as it would allow the pump box to swing back and forth but it might just work if there isnt to much slack in the fuel lines.
Nice, that sounds like a great solution!
What is the Dia. of the pump body?
microfiber cloths work well just wrapped around pump
I like the ticking
Can’t find a Webasto petrol 2000 heater sold out everywhere in my search. Anyone?
If you have a spare pillow or towel and the room wrap it in cling film and tape it job done
That setup, with the pump at the high point is going to trap air, especially w the larger tubing.. Need to invert - but maybe it works anyway? I'm gonna copy your box idea, thanks.
pump should be at an angle
to help lubricate the piston
as it is finely machined metal to metal
so needs to self lubricate via the diesel
otherwise a good silencer method
BTW to all the lube ... comments... If you've ever gotten diesel on your hands you know it doesn't just wipe off.. the oil is a super fine oil that once it lubes it's lubed for a while so.. the lube issue may not be an issue at all once the oil / diesel has entered the pump once..
Brilliant! Best video I have seen so far to quiet the pump. Obviously some serious and level headed thought taken.
Well done!
As for the soft rubber fuel line, what is the inside diameter please?
I fitted mine straight to my van fuel tank the pump is on top of the fuel tank so I don't hear the pump in side the van at all
I noticed that the box is hard mounted to your vehicle. Would it not be better to shock cord the box as well.
If you had the space I think that would probably help a fair amount!
Your just like my mother, we love her to bits but she takes 15 minutes to explain something that would take most folk 2 minutes at best.. 😆😂
What a great problem
Do you think the whole fuel line run needs to be rubber? Seems like most of the vibration is on the heater side but only for several inches away from the pump. Otherwise, thanks for the video - I plan to copy your design.
In my experience, no. 18in of rubber line on either side of the pump is plenty
@@dustyodyssey Thanks. I built a pretty exact replica of what you did, except I only used 6" of rubber fuel lines to extend just far enough outside the box that I could attach to the existing hard fuel lines. It transmits no vibration to the hard lines and is now almost completely silent. It's really a brilliant design. Thanks again.
Is your diesel heater a cheap eBay one? Thanks
Yes it is
@@dustyodyssey any recommendations? There’s loads of diff ones thanks
Nice one, like n sub....Merry Xmas
Use Peristaltic diesel metering Pump
Just what I was thinking...
You don't want it to be late must be angle on it so it don't get air
Why are they even loud? Certainly they could make a quite pump.
I don't have any clicking. No clue what I did to avoid that.
yes, but the ppppump needs to be at an angle
Vinyl mass 8kg man or fill it up with cellulose fibre
Could cause heat build up..?
i lagged white pipe with foam
All this time and effort and I just went and bought a silent pump of a guy who builds them for £120 and it is silent because it doesn't use these pumps it uses a pulse pump and is adjustable
MDF box lined with Dynamat and filled with soundproof insulation makes it silent.
The only thing wrong is it doesn't have the correct angle!
see his comments - it's part on purpose
20 degrees
It's supposed to be a 30 degree angle
Pump needs to be on an angle, can’t sit sideways. Burns it up. Just set it on a 45.
fuel pump needs to be mounted at an angle of 30\40 degrees
Sorry flat down must have a angle
Fuel pump needs to be at an angle
It is slient but you did everything wrong, the fuel line, the angle of the pump!
Someone else who doesn’t follow instructions, the fuel pump is meant to be installed at an angle of 45* from the horizontal
I run my heater on red diesel it's alot cheaper.
Red is soon to be no longer later on it the year m8
@@davedixon6372 how come
@Jason Endean there stopping it I don't know why mate but we're I work hire plant machines and we are going to have to run them on white soon

FUEL PUMP PLACEMENT...
The pumps are Ch ina Sh it... That is why you re having trouble.
Why not just buy a better (ultra silent) pump?
