I cried when my son told me this was him! He’s gone now. He left me when he was 21 years old! I miss you everyday Dalton! I’ll see you when I get there!! Love,Momma
I stand with you. My soulmate from the age of 19 til he killed him self a couple of yrs ago. He was a huge part of my life and all of the great memories we had. It’s hard I give credit to anyone that is struggling over the death of a loved one. It’s not easy and you have to keep yourself somewhat saying keep moving forward even when you don’t want to. I’m sorry about your son , he passed too soon. Just lost my adopted daughter at the age of 27, on Christmas Eve. She was about to graduate with a nursing degree and a back up in philosophy. Just 6mo after my soulmate killed himself. You have to be a strong person with a strong belief system to get through that mental anguish. So peace & prayers to you! ❤️🙏✌️
I was 17 when this song came out. Daddy was in prison until I was 11. He always pushed me to enlist or go to college. The day this song came out I sent it to him. That man bought me my first guitar. Five minutes after sending him this, he told me "Son, maybe we're pushing you in the wrong direction". I played this for the school talent show. "hey there weird kid in you high top shoes, sittin' in the back of the class; I was just like you" was my senior quote. This is the song that defines my life. This is me. This is my life in five minutes and twenty-four seconds. This was the first time I was understood by own parents. and that's damn rock and roll.
Well SAID .... I'm kinda like you. I live my life through music... I'll tell everybody double things. I'm gonna miss in life. The dirt my face. I don't give a f*** My kids hot women bourbon & music... Is the fuel I need to make me live
Hell yeah my friend. I’m a “country boy” born and raised in the ATL. I’ll be 33 this month but I’ve been self taught on my guitar since I was 12 😆 Mr Misunderstood is usually the coolest, most soft spoken, kind person once you get to know them. If you can make music, then you can have a voice to help others! Keep playing! You have a powerful story to share! It definitely helped this “old man” today 🤜🏻🤛🏻
That's a awesome story man!! I am so lucky, that like literally EVERYONE in my Family are pretty Serious Musicians.. Both on my Mom's Side and my Dad's side!! Obviously some take music more Serious than others, but I'm so thankful that l was born with Music already running through my soul!! Like yourself and the few others who replied to your comment, Music is my Life!! It's my Reason and my identity.. My Dad is the reason I'm the Person and Musician that I am today.. This isn’t just a song for a lot of people......It’s an anthem for a guy like me and I’m a hardened 60 year old that’s never been afraid of nothing. I’ll be honest though. I can’t listen to this song without coming to tears. Thank you Eric. It’s one of my favorites! God bless!

I'm 2 years behind you. Same here. I have a grand daughter that's only 5 years old but she has some musical talent. I'm still working on my older grandsons. Hopefully one will pick up a guitar and get lost in it like I do...
My cousin who was like a brother to me just died and this song just explained him, he was 20 years old and we had a benefit dinner to help my aunt and uncle pay for the funeral last night and we stood there holding eachother and balling our eyes out as the band played this song and it's now my favorite song for many reasons
Our youngest so was placed in our arms when he was 5 days old. He was born addicted to meth and heroin and had Asthma and RSV. He struggled so hard to overcome his addictions and to breathe. Night time was much harder on him. So many nights I walked the floor with him holding him and praying for a miracle. The only time at night that he didn't cry was if this song was on a constant repeat. It soothed him. Almost like it gave him hope. We live in a small town in the south where football and baseball reign. Well, my son doesnt play sports and is interested in other hobbies (which he succeeds in). He gets bullied for it and kids threaten to kill the animals he is so successful with. My son is brilliant. . He is Mr. Misunderstood.

Eric Church is a soon to be country God and already a Legend in my mind. His music along with many others have seen me through some hard times, kept me pressing when I didn’t want to keep pressing in life and inspired me to discover the real meaning of the word “empathy”.... Thanks Eric and LOVE everything you do brother! Don’t ever stop please. I appreciate you....
Thanks Church for making this real. Some folks just don't give a damn about the ones whom get misunderstood it happens way to often, Most kids who get treated like this prevail! Thanks Chief. ♡
A lot of people can be misunderstood nowadays when most communications is done online with someone ...GOD BLESS EVERYONE ¡¡¡☆☆☆i believe you should kmow the person in person fully to make an opinion...
This song saved me years ago. Lowest point of my life. It was over. Till i heard this. This song fits my life thru n thru. Thank u boss man for a great song
+squirell shooter I get teh feeling that she doesn't know what REAL Country music is. Seems more like just listing names she knows. I'll pull another name out Kenny Chesney. He hasn't done real Country music for years. He does Island music now. Nothing wrong with it, and honestly I like his music, but it isn't real country music.
I am sorry but I would rather have Garth Brooks, George Strait and Reba over any of the artist you listed. Luke Bryan is "pop" country and it's cool if you like that but I personally don't. To each their own.
I'm a Rock & Roll and Heavy Metal guy, but Eric Church... This guy gets it. He's Rock & Roll just as much as he is Country, and that's great. We need more people like him. This song is literally a description of me, as a 15 year old kid now.
I nearly cried when I first heard this song and the line "think Jeff Tweedy is one bad mother" that fact that Eric Church got everyone of my favorite singers in that whole verse. Go Wilco and Eric Church!!
This man has touched my soul...He's a 1 of kind. I still tear up a little when he says, "My.Misunderstood....I understand". That's all half of us ever wanted to hear...
When my daughter was a newborn her daddy used to sing this to her and now she is 4 years old she likes this song. It is the only song she will fall asleep to.
I have been listening to ERIC CHURCH for a while now, I'm trying to remember exactly when I really realized how much he is so far above the rest in his music ability ,he puts all he has in it,and it shows ,he never has had a bad song, although I like some better than the others, and this song being one of those. Actually this whole album is badass. .I would love so damn much to see him in in concert ,but so far everytime he is close enough for me to go to one, something has happened to me that has prevented it from happening..BUT I WILL MAKE IT TO ONE ... SOME DAY ,UNTIL THEN I'LL JUST KEEP ON JAMMING ON MY PHONE AND STEREO . AND KEEP MY HOPES ALIVE .THANKS ERIC FOR YOUR AWESOME MUSIC.
A song for all of us....from one old soul to all of us. Reminds us we proudly must walk own unique, pained, yet beautiful path thru life. Always sings the brave truths. EC fan to the End!
I remember when I first clicked on this song when it came out, cause the name caught my attention. Good to revisit it when I’m mad at the sun for coming up again
I'm was livng the female version of this...only it took me 40 yrs to accept that I was always Miss Misunderstood. Now I realize the ones that didnt Understand... lost out...not me!!
It's somewhat ironic the people who are the most " misundersood" turn out to be the most compassionate, empathetic people you know.I know from personal experience. They can read people so well...intuitive to others sorrows and joys.In my humble opinion they are the true Christians. They know what Jesus would do.
Her daddy didn't trust my intensions so he turned to his daddy's 410... i love that line Church is legendary folks talent like him is rare and far between.

the song brought me to my knees when I first started I just want my son to hear for the reminds me of him and he's just as stubborn as I am and that's a problem loving much
I totally agree...Truly a lyrical genius...Such an amazing story teller. So good that as I hear them, I can also clearly SEE them playing out in my head. AMAZING
listened to this song since i was 7 when it came out. i was never very popular, which i could care less about, but people always picked on me until this year. im 15 now, everyone respects me a lot more, ive improved myself a lot. i would listen to this song all the time, and it would remind me that i wouldnt be misunderstood forever.
A song about true love of our brothers and sisters that we don't understand... No matter the circumstances... We don't have to understand the circumstances... Our's is only to love.... Unconditionally....
Just seen this comment and that was the first time I'd heard it.. I remember the other artists standing for it and I told my wife that it was probably one of the best songs out.. and it still is
this song describes me 100% i was going through my old music the other day for a talent show i have coming up i couldnt find anything i liked so i started searching my moms old CDs and i found this and i fell in love with it so here i am playing this song on my guitar singing along and thinking about my life a bit
This song is me I have been misunderstood thru School the military thru life and here I am today listening to a great song by Eric Church it's a Legend song that many many people can relate to in their life it's a blessing I'm still here but this song is so great it sure helps
I play it quite abit myself...sorry for your loss. Lost my dad, my hero...nov12th...81 years, what a man... ill never be able to fill his shoes but I'll try.
Nubb4life910 You need to do yourself a favor then and give Sturgill Simpson, Cody Jinks, and Whitey Morgan and the 78s a listen. There's a lot of guys out there that refuse to sell out and refuse to make crappy country.
Nubb4life910 Hey people, i kinda see why you would want to keep those traditional Country styles alive but lets be honest for a minute. Rock and roll was the foundation for a very long time until it gave way to electronic music. We certainly cannot expect Classic Country to last forever as we know it. You are watching the transition and i see it as a means to keep country alive. There are not enough young artists that are doing it so the industry has to tap into whats left. I am 55 yrs old and i kind of like these new Country artists.
Rich Masi Rich, I see what you mean completely. Being 55, you've seen music progress. I'm 24, and when I hear good music to my taste, I call it as such. But my beef with country is the lack of gate keepers for a lack of a better phrase to say yes this is country or no it isn't. There's nothing wrong with blending genres to create something unique with style or phrasing or instrumentation. Country and rock always went together since rock was an offshoot of country. Pop and country always were intertwined, you can't separate them really. Here's the point we're I call bullshit on country music "evolving", where is the cutoff. You can't just be a pop artist and one day just go country. Alan Jackson talked about that in the 90s with "Gone country". And to use him again with George Straight, they called out Nashville again with "Murder on Music Row" to point out how they have lost what made country music what it should be. They tried to get Taylor Swift to walk the pop/country line and she stood up to the record label when she wanted to make pop music. Nashville's problem is that they are addicted to pop trends a year late. Someone talking about going to the club in designer jeans and a $600 haircut (which Eric Church almost could've been, I believe his ex-fiancé' father was a banker or some type of big wig) doesn't know the struggles of the rural life that is the heart and soul of country. When someone asks me why I rarely listen to the radio, that's my answer. Country has lost its touch with rural reality. Does country need to move forward and evolve? Yes it does. Is it doing itself any favors now? Nope. Florida Georgia Line is something people will go "Who?" 10 years from now. They are like the country version of Nickelback. When was the last time you heard anything from them? Today's country artists wouldn't make it in pop, and will be forgotten with time. Their isn't a Hank, Waylon, Willie, Johnny, and so on that will last a lifetime on the radio.
ih1206 you are right...i have listened to everything from rock to Disco to punk to Country...i love music. I do not like the hip hop stuff much because it is so violent and sends a bad message. I do respect their rights to sing but i do not respect the encouragement of violence. Music is a gift. Thank you for the response

Love the back story of Mickey Smay( young man as Mr.Misunderstood) Eric is a genius. The man " teaching" him guitar is his father who actually plays drums in a band in their hometown of Rochester NewYork. Also Mickey is really playing his part.Serendipity...God is good. This song speaks to all who follow the beat of their own drum...stay true to yourself!
What a beautiful song. People listen to things but don't hear it, and i am one of them. I have heard this song but yeald and mumbled when i sang it but never listened.

Eric Church is the best country/rock artist alive right now. I really like how he doesn't wear a cliche cowboy hat like every other fake "country artist". don't know why people have to dislike a meaningful song with thoughtful lyrics. at least he isn't singing about boobs, clubs, and living like its the last night of your life. Hey look! real instruments.
Just listening to Eric on repeat as per usual. What masterpieces this man paints with his lyrics! If there can be a blockbuster rock opera about a ‘deaf dumb and blind kid’ playing pinball, then Eric already has a body of work to prove himself more than worthy. Of course I’d rather see him live but just sayin’. Just listened to Knives of New Orleans and Mistress Named Music... again and then rolled right into Break It Kind of Guy. All I can say just like anytime I play him is ... DAMN! And as we all know that only scratches the surface. This man is a musical genius.
My teacher and I taped cars up to get ready to paint to this song on replay.he sadly passed away 3 hours ago.youll be missed mr.shipman I think we can all say fuck cancer I'll see you again some day
had a record year this year and found a sentimental pain of oss with wilco and the birth and loss of my son if it wasnt for my guitar horses and dirt roads id be bluer then i am and yet I can smile when i hear this song.... wisky under the trees
+0125FordBronco Nope,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but I can kind of see where you're coming from, if ever so slightly. Kinda the same pace and rhythm (until it speeds up at the end!)

Plus, everything he puts out sounds awesome, in its own unique style.
@Eric Church🔹 thanks for your love for your fans
Actually Jeff Hyde, his rhythm acoustic player, is behind many of the songs. Songwriters rarely get the credit they deserve.
I feel that Eric has always had the "You don't like me or my music, fuck you" vibe. That makes him the badass he is

Actual country music, by a mainstream country artist. By God its a miracle.
Listen to his first two albums. They're the best

hell be a great person and a good soul
Eric Church is a soon to be country God and already a Legend in my mind. His music along with many others have seen me through some hard times, kept me pressing when I didn’t want to keep pressing in life and inspired me to discover the real meaning of the word “empathy”.... Thanks Eric and LOVE everything you do brother! Don’t ever stop please. I appreciate you....
Thanks Church for making this real. Some folks just don't give a damn about the ones whom get misunderstood it happens way to often, Most kids who get treated like this prevail! Thanks Chief. ♡
I've been misunderstood so many times.8-7-21amen
Now this is some real country music
murica brother.
+Dolly Vader it's actually better than country music. Literally too talented and experimental.
***** I was complimenting Eric church.
+Brittany Andrews take Jon pardi and Chris Stapleton off that list, those guys got lots of talent
+Brittany Andrews stapleton is old school like hank, waylon and kristofferson.
Brandon Gray keep doing you my man.
Glade your still here
Cheers to u man
Alrighty then I'm so happy for you. I also love this song. Like you it has made me at my best 💜💜
This small thread redeemed my faith in humanity and the internet. Glad you're still here too Brandon Gray
I love me some Mr. Church. Thank you for not selling out and actually playing country music :)
+Brittany Andrews definitely not Luke Bryan
+squirell shooter I get teh feeling that she doesn't know what REAL Country music is. Seems more like just listing names she knows. I'll pull another name out Kenny Chesney. He hasn't done real Country music for years. He does Island music now. Nothing wrong with it, and honestly I like his music, but it isn't real country music.
I am sorry but I would rather have Garth Brooks, George Strait and Reba over any of the artist you listed. Luke Bryan is "pop" country and it's cool if you like that but I personally don't. To each their own.
***** you're a funking embarrassment for America. "Jason aldean, Luke Bryan and Jason aldean true country"???? Fuck off!!!!
trick can *fucking
I'm a Rock & Roll and Heavy Metal guy, but Eric Church... This guy gets it. He's Rock & Roll just as much as he is Country, and that's great. We need more people like him. This song is literally a description of me, as a 15 year old kid now.
I so agree.
The lyrics are fantastic.
If only there was a button I could hit to say that this song / story gave me Goose Bumps and brought tears to my eyes, magic,,,, pure magic
Hers was love
I nearly cried when I first heard this song and the line "think Jeff Tweedy is one bad mother" that fact that Eric Church got everyone of my favorite singers in that whole verse. Go Wilco and Eric Church!!
This man has touched my soul...He's a 1 of kind. I still tear up a little when he says, "My.Misunderstood....I understand". That's all half of us ever wanted to hear...
This is the only song that's ever moved me to tears. Seriously.
When my daughter was a newborn her daddy used to sing this to her and now she is 4 years old she likes this song. It is the only song she will fall asleep to.
The beat had me from the start.. and the words fit right in..👌
I have been listening to ERIC CHURCH for a while now, I'm trying to remember exactly when I really realized how much he is so far above the rest in his music ability ,he puts all he has in it,and it shows ,he never has had a bad song, although I like some better than the others, and this song being one of those.
Keeping that true country sound alive! Love it!
From Mexico City!!!
i love Mr Eric Church.
Pensé que era el único que le gustaba el Country en México .. :D
josue pedrosa Hey! Claro que no, ya somos 2. 😀😊

Rebel Karen Jones Absolutely nothing wrong with that though:)
Kim Smith, That's right. And that is Shakespeare.
Rebel Karen Jones Love that. I'm a 42 yr old guy coming to the same conclusion about myself.
Rebel Karen Jones me too
Rebel Karen Jones tell em mamas...lol..
It's somewhat ironic the people who are the most " misundersood" turn out to be the most compassionate, empathetic people you know.I know from personal experience. They can read people so well...intuitive to others sorrows and joys.In my humble opinion they are the true Christians. They know what Jesus would do.
Goodness. You read me like a book. Caught me off guard.
Yes 2 core thians tells you we are here for you! Yes you
So deep and true
Absolutely
Amen!
I just can't stop replaying it

Chris Jacques
Chris Jacques Ha, me too. I tear up when I hear it. I imagine singing to all of those kids who were misunderstood, like I was.
I've been playing for 25 years plus and can tell you his timing is impeccable!
Interesting how he uses the tempo in this tune to support the vibe he is bringing!
Mr Misunderstood
Her daddy didn't trust my intensions so he turned to his daddy's 410... i love that line Church is legendary folks talent like him is rare and far between.
Same bro 🙏
Eric Church is LITERALLY the BEST singer in the universe. I love every single on of his songs and that will never change. Not only boys like him.
He tells such good stories in his music that are down to earth and could be anyone's story

Even though I’m from Germany this song found its way to my ears. Super relatable. Thanks!
I personally wanna meet church so i can just thank him for this song....like seriously dude, this is my truth
Batool Abbasi Me too.
I can relate to brother!!!!
Well, he's going to be at Rockin' Riverfest in Merritt this year! Maybe you'll get to meet him there. Some artists have done M&Gs there before.
the song brought me to my knees when I first started I just want my son to hear for the reminds me of him and he's just as stubborn as I am and that's a problem loving much
I totally agree...Truly a lyrical genius...Such an amazing story teller. So good that as I hear them, I can also clearly SEE them playing out in my head. AMAZING
ERIC CHURCH IS THE MAN!!! He legit just released this album to surprise all his fans!!! It's so amazing just like Eric church!!
3:34 Eric proves that he is singing about himself
This man is a remarkable artist... I've never heard a song sung by him that I didn't love❤ Keep em' coming Eric...
listened to this song since i was 7 when it came out. i was never very popular, which i could care less about, but people always picked on me until this year. im 15 now, everyone respects me a lot more, ive improved myself a lot. i would listen to this song all the time, and it would remind me that i wouldnt be misunderstood forever.
Solid Gold. Fantastic vid. Love how the tempo changes throughout the song- just like on my old record player.
Love Eric Church. He grew up about an away from me. All of his music is original unlike every other country singer today
Eric church is the voice of my North Carolina born & raised generation! Absolutely love his music!
I love all of your songs, however, Carolina is the one that hits closest to home for me.
A song about true love of our brothers and sisters that we don't understand... No matter the circumstances... We don't have to understand the circumstances... Our's is only to love.... Unconditionally....
Amen!!!
What I like about Eric church is that his songs always are about him. This was a story about a time in his life.
How a youngun can help me is amazing. True talent delivers. Mr. Church I am a hair from 60 and thank you
Heard this for the first time on the CMA's and loved it! Great artist with a great song.
THERE'S NO MISUNDERSTANDING HERE... CHURCH IS THE PASTOR OF THE WORD OF ROCK N ROLL... THE MUSIC IS EVERYTHING.
I like this song because when someone needed help, believe it or not I would until my temper flared but it has vastly improved. Trust me ********
I like how he has a heavy guitar and rock elements but he still country

This song is me I have been misunderstood thru School the military thru life and here I am today listening to a great song by Eric Church it's a Legend song that many many people can relate to in their life it's a blessing I'm still here but this song is so great it sure helps
The songs keep getting better and better I've been listening to your music from you started.
If that don't give ya chills. Idk. If we can be friends. Country rock. N blues. All in one song. Mad respect
Lost my 18yo son 2 months ago and I play this song almost daily.
His music resonates with people. His lyrics are old soul and that’s so unlike 90% of the music playing on the radio today.
May the lord Jesus restore your soul. I can't even imagine and can't comment further. 😢
@MarcosBryant-gk1jv I will answer this question and it is drowning man.
I play it quite abit myself...sorry for your loss.
Lost my dad, my hero...nov12th...81 years, what a man... ill never be able to fill his shoes but I'll try.
That’s so sad 😢 sorry for your loss.
prob the only country artist i still have respect for. he's no sellout like luke bryan or jason aldean
Nubb4life910 You need to do yourself a favor then and give Sturgill Simpson, Cody Jinks, and Whitey Morgan and the 78s a listen. There's a lot of guys out there that refuse to sell out and refuse to make crappy country.
+ih1206 Yeah and throw in Jason Isbell and one badass female Margo Price to the mix.
I’m jst a fool who’s intentions are good Please lord don’t let me be misunderstood. Mr. Misunderstood.
big Eric Church fan. love the lyrics and meaning behind the songs.
🔥🔥🔥 been listening to this song for about 6 years now.... and here I am still listening to it!
His music can help you get through anything
this album transcends country. country is the soil from which his style was born, but the tree has grown beyond it into something else entirely.
my favorite genres of music are country and heavy metal, both can speak their minds, and have amazing meanings, love it.

Eric keeps a real country vibe going and we should all appreciate it. To hell with those who don't
WOW...,YOU GO, ERIC

Yes
Yes sir
Love the back story of Mickey Smay( young man as Mr.Misunderstood) Eric is a genius. The man " teaching" him guitar is his father who actually plays drums in a band in their hometown of Rochester NewYork. Also Mickey is really playing his part.Serendipity...God is good. This song speaks to all who follow the beat of their own drum...stay true to yourself!
HOLY FUCK HE'S GREAT! Seen him in concert a bunch of times and got all his albums.
+Brittany Andrews Correction, all but one...
+Ian Fourie lucky
+Breanna VanZandt Yeah, he was fronted by Halestorm.

Hey look! real instruments.
bud thedog I agree 100%, I enjoy his music, it’s just so real..
Should have WON at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards that aired 5/22/2016. Totally a MASTERPIECE :-)!!
I still don't understand why this song didn't go to the top. it's much deeper than record year.
@Eric Church You best song ever man!
My teacher and I taped cars up to get ready to paint to this song on replay.he sadly passed away 3 hours ago.youll be missed mr.shipman I think we can all say fuck cancer I'll see you again some day
+Jared Tatgenhorst So sorry for your loss! Damn straight, fuck cancer!
Sorry 4 ur loss 😔
So sorry for your loss

Chief was so damn good 🤘
His music makes my soul sing 😍 SOME OF IT says it All!
Eric church is very underrated a great Man and a phenomenal songwriter and musician. Probably The Best people today just don't understand great music
had a record year this year and found a sentimental pain of oss with wilco and the birth and loss of my son if it wasnt for my guitar horses and dirt roads id be bluer then i am and yet I can smile when i hear this song.... wisky under the trees
Anyone else a mr. Misunderstood
josh denton Me. That's why I'm here.
yup
Yupp
josh denton me of course that's one of the reasons I love this song.
Always have been but at least were not followers.......
Does this song remind anyone else of American Pie ?
+0125FordBronco Nope,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but I can kind of see where you're coming from, if ever so slightly. Kinda the same pace and rhythm (until it speeds up at the end!)
+0125FordBronco Hmmmm?? then the end...... good observation but certainly not a copy.
I get a similar vibe but considering its one of my all time favorite songs, I really like this. Certainly not a copy but similar style.
How does American pie suck?
I've always figured he went on an American pie and Bob Dylan marathon before writing this.
Am 54 and have been misunderstood my whole life but would not change anything except a few times I was in jail love my kids and my baby's mom were not together anymore but were still close love the song
Congratulations on album of the year
Ya got to be loyal and do it w fath !!!! The rest will come ,congratulations !!!!!
Hey dont I know you from somewhere
