On another note, I would like to ask you if you can make a video about your views on the various "otherworlds" and its role in the games? I keep fascinating and got me wondering about James's otherworld and how it works exactly.
Awesome! Caught your stream of this game a few weeks back. I really wish that they focused more on Travis' personal story, any time that Alessa/The Cult came up just felt forced and broke the flow.
They were pretty determined to not let us forget it's a prequel to the first game that they let Travis' story be a side plot when hes the character you are playing, only reason it just about worked in SH4 is because of how many characters that game had...and it really only just about worked
I like how you said in the chat replay how it's rare to have an older protagonist like Travis; a baseball hat-wearing trucker (even though that's one of my personal fav types LOL). Not a lot of horror games have you play as older-ish characters; Travis, so far, is my favorite thing about Origins because I wanted to know more about *him* not the awkwardly shoe-horned references to the OG game. It's a shame, because him being a wandering person lends itself well to a setting like Silent Hill, especially relating to his backstory.
Ikr? I actually really liked Travis but it felt like he had literally nothing to do with the story...because he didn't. They should've made it more about him instead of trying to make a stupid prequel.
Travis and Alessa have a lot in common, both of their parents had a conflict over their son or daughter and both their mothers did something terrible to them for a greater purpose. Travis is actually a hero because he saved Alessa's childhood and, by extension, allowed Heather to exist and to choose her destiny. He actually wanted her to have a better life than he did.
Great video. I love seeing your fairness to the black sheeps of the franchise. You don't normally get to see praise on their aspects without someone running to tell you it sucks in this fandom.
Despite how predictable and derivative this game felt to me at the time, I genuinely enjoyed its very twisted stories and atmosphere. It was way better than Homecoming, which I felt was too bombastic for a Silent Hill game.
This is such a great channel honestly. I’m glad people still care about these games that seem to be forgotten nowadays when they built the foundation of all modern horror games. Playing this game right now and while it’s definitely not the best SH I actually do like it.
I always loved Origins, not only because I think it has one of the best OSTs in the series but also because it feels a different level of eeriness. It tickles something in me that none of the other games do. I cant describe it really but I hope you all understand. Im looking forward to SH Origins Silent Hill Symbolism videos! Your doing great work, stay safe and watch your health Muse. Greetings from germany~ ❤
I actually liked Origins way back when. Never got around to beating it cause I got stuck on that dumb puzzle box, but yeah I always enjoyed the atmosphere and how I could actually see someone like Travis at some downtown diner. I was never a fan of breakable weapons in games, and it was a clunky mechanic in this game too, but it did at least have a way of keeping the player driven to stay on course - last thing you wanna do is run out of useable weapons in the sanitorium, which was admittedly one of the scariest environments I've seen in the entire series. I do find it rather amusing that Travis was such a fan favorite with audiences from Japan, when he was engineered by a western team to appeal to the western gamers that shunned him. XD
Origins is 3rd on my SH tier, after 2&3. I recently went to a great deal of effort to be able to play it & 1 again - so it's awesome to see it getting some love! Thankyou
To be honest, every level that travis go through represents the traumas that he have endured. The hospital represents the opening of his inner self, the sanitarium represents the abuse, confusion and rage that he have felt for his mother, the theater represents his suffering through his mental illness (Split personality disorder) and lastly the motel which represents abandonment and betrayal which at the same time reconciliation and acceptance being intertwined.
I know so many people exactly like Travis, and the choice to make him a trucker in the 70's? Chef's Kiss! That was a time period in which the trucker was an American cultural icon it fits so well. I always loved the little "Big Trouble in Little China" Moment at the end where he smiles at his truck, what a goofy dude.
This was my first ever silent hill game to introduce me to the series. At first I was iffy about it because it was a game I wasn't use to playing but I eventually gave in and had a lot of fun. (Same thing with code veronica x) I remember printing out walkthroughs and researching how to pass certain parts and solve certain puzzles. This game really holds a special place in my heart because I could not stop playing it. I played it until I got all the weapons, costumes, etc. If I was bored at times (like at night), I'd turn on my psp and continue from where I left off. This game honestly got me through some rough times and I'll never forget that. I replayed it recently on a ps2 emulator and finished it in one sitting. I couldn't believe it. I rarely do that with games I use to play with. I didn't even do that with RE: Code Veronica X!
Origins may have nothing on the first four, but it'll always have a special place in my heart, as it's what got me into the series, and your points make a lot of sense and deepen my appreciation for it
I must say that my opinion is biased because this was my first game in the series, but everytime i remember this game i just get chills, i played this Game when i was like 12-13 yo and i was scared to hell by it, still re-played it a thousand times to get all the endings, this is one of the games that made me love gaming, and it will always have a special place in my heart because of it
I still really want to see that beta version that was a comedy based on scrubs or something, it wouldve been a disaster but one you cant take your eyes of.
Origins is not among my favorite sh games but is definitely the scariest one for me. Maybe because it was too dark as it had that problem on ps 2. Its not bad but i think it would be received much better if it was a game on its own,not trying to tie with first one
@6:32 I also think that the Japanese games (1-4) expertly use the tradition of Shintoism, as a reason why the town gets corrupted. [To be fair, I haven't studied Shinto, just heard some descriptions of it.] The idea that the town is reacting to negative energy or emotions. This is explored in the western titles, but not as well as the Japanese titles. At least in my opinion.
It's interesting that many Latin Americans like myself feel a lot more connected to the Japanese games than to the Western made ones, probably because the latter are so specifically American. The Japanese games allow a level of cultural ambiguity that makes them more relatable, in my opinion. On the other hand, The Western games for me are creepy not because they are a known place, but because they are so specific yet supposed to feel familiar but they aren't. It's like something you have seen in a dream, it's identifiable but it's not really "right" in terms of reality. You have never really been there although you know the dreamscape. Not saying the outward cultural elements in the Western games are bad. I like the Western games. Origins is fun. I like Travis. I've always thought that him straight up throwing TV's and fist fighting is something so practical that anyone who happened to find themselves in such a situation would do the same. I didn't appreciate much how he was inserted in Alessa's story, though. But in general, I feel like it's a fine game, especially if we consider how it was conceptualized in the beginning.
If Silent Hill Broken Covenant was made we would have got another truck driving character. The only difference it would have been a priest that can drive.
Let's not overlook how origins actually is somehow tied to the movie and in fact very influenced by some thesis and aesthetics. For example, we see for the first time in the movie that Alessa was burned alive as sacrifice, then Origins starts and boom you are rescuing the same crispy-alessa from the movie. Also the snow/ash contradiction: in SH1 when you met Kaufman he speaks of how bizarre is to be snowing for that time of the year. Later the movie stablished the snow as ash from the city fires; then Origins goes further with that linking the fog to the smoke from the house fire in the opening minutes. As usual, too much contradiction, you get to a point where what's canon and what's not can't be distinguished any further. Muse, please, shed some light upon our confused fan selves. PS. Been a while since I saw the movie so apologies if something is not as I recall, but just replayed SH1 days ago and swear Kaufman literally says that about the snow first time you meet him in the Hospital.
I wanted to believe this game had potential it hurts to see just how much could have been done if it wasnt for the direction I really am sad about this game along side shattered memories was one of my very first interaction with this beautiful series then sh1 (sadly late) came but sssssh. Travis was one of my fav characters in the sh saga, he had a lot of interesting ideas and oh my god his relationship with the butcher it was cool to rhink he was a serial killer in denial and i wished he was in a better writing. 😔
I like that you mention that Origins and Homecoming are both more American than the other, earlier releases of Silent Hill. Tho I'm Canadian, I liked seeing the very American stuff in Homecoming, and how they achieved certain small details that could have only come from Americans themselves. One thing that did strike me about both games tho, was how convoluted Homecoming was in its symbolism, whilst Origins was much more straightfoward, and I suspect the rushed development of Origins that contributed to this. They both have their merits tho.
I had the opposite affect. I liked the game when I bought it day 1 on PSP....then hated it when I revisited it as it hadn’t aged well. Same with Homecoming(for the life of me I can’t understand how or why I liked that game lol). Because of this I skipped Downpour, but I must say. I watched a playthrough of Downpour recently and while not perfect, it actually looks pretty cool. Having “Silent Hill” on the box is the curse that ruins it though. Because though its bad in the idea of a Silent Hill game, as its own thing its good. Story is really impressive and some of the presentation. It just crumbles under the weight of legacy it’s not fit to carry.
I actually really liked origins, I have the ps2 version, I found the ps2 one at a weird thrift shop in Texas for 2 bucks , I had the psp one but someone stole it.
I wasn't crazy about Origins but I liked it a lot more than Homecoming or Downpour and definitely more than Shattered Memories. I think I liked it more because the levels and mechanics were more akin to 2 or 3, and those are almost everyone's favorites and certainly mine. It's not that trying new things is inherently going to spoil it for me, rather I just didn't like many of the new ideas. Turning the Otherworld into a boring chase sequence was one of the worst. What Is he running from anyway? The black hole from the "Black Hole Sun" music video? That video did scare the shit out of me when I was a kid... seeing all those weird faces distort like a bad trip and then get eaten by the hole. I wish that era of survival horror were not dead. All we get is indie games and they rarely feel anything like early RE or SH. I'm playing "Tormented Souls" now on PS5, but meh.
I liked origins it does have a pretty unique vibe from the others with a nice soundtrack. I try not to be too hard on it since when it was picked up by the 2nd team. It was put through development hell with minimal time to fix it and most of the budget being spent. Of course I don’t think this exempts it from criticism though.
I like Travis, but the game didn't hit the same way it did for you since I'm a northerner. Someone like his mother always seemed like a caricature to me...and then I moved to Florida.
I actually enjoyed Origins. To me it was the best out of the three "western" games. It was much closer in ambience to the original Silent Hills from the maps to the music. It sucked they tried to retcon stuff. It would've been better if it had been a stand-alone story with no relation to the original game.
*blink blink* Travis was well-received in Japan? Wow, regions really do make a difference. Most American Silent Hill fans I meet don't like him much. Huh.
I used to hate origins so much, but last month I have played it for the first time and I love it. It might not be on the level of the previous SH games, but it's still really good. I really love theater level, and psychiatric ward level. At this point I prefer playing sh origins to the sh 3. Story is really good and traumatic, but game is kind of short and simplified. I didn't play this game back in the day because of the idiotic opening sequence. I just hate it.
Hmm. Not sure I'm really with you on this one. The otherworldliness of the Japanese products is one of the their strengths. The relative familiarity of Origins is one of its weaknesses, making it rather bland in comparison. I quite enjoyed Origins, played on the PSP in my case, and certainly don't hate it like some people seem to do but there is something about it which just doesn't get me hooked on it like I was with SH 1-4.
I love the room as well, but origins was faithful to the first three games. I didn’t mind Travis. What I did mind was not being able to see anything when exploring the insides of the buildings. The flashlight barely illuminates your walking path. You can’t see anything.
I can only understand liking SH Origins if it was your very first SH or at least as a grown up revisiting the games. Otherwise it's just a far weaker SH game than any of the first 4. It's like they're trying to clone the first 4, but without any direction, while adding pointless mechanics that were hip at the time, like breakable weapons.

If Silent Hill Broken Covenant was made we would have got another truck driving character. The only difference it would have been a priest that can drive.
I beat it and I loved it!
Same.
the rain filter in this game is still better than the one in the new GTA remastered lol...isn't one theory that O'Grady is actually a serial killer?
origns and homecoming are my favorites. I don't have nostalgic loyalty to people who have no idea I exist.
I hope Konami does what Capcom did with the RE series and give these games a reboot
I wanted to believe this game had potential it hurts to see just how much could have been done if it wasnt for the direction
I really am sad about this game along side shattered memories was one of my very first interaction with this beautiful series then sh1 (sadly late) came but sssssh.
No surprise Travis made a cameo on Homecoming.
I enjoyed the game, but not enough to keep it to replay? Guess I just prefer playing outright fantasy
I actually really liked origins, I have the ps2 version, I found the ps2 one at a weird thrift shop in Texas for 2 bucks , I had the psp one but someone stole it.
very good tgm
The aesthetic of the game it's so weird, Alessa looks like a KH scraped off character. Lmao
I thought she looked like a Stranger of Paradise/Rob Zombie-inspired character.
I like Travis, but the game didn't hit the same way it did for you since I'm a northerner. Someone like his mother always seemed like a caricature to me...and then I moved to Florida.
I really think Origins would have been better if they just focused on Travis and his parents, the whole Alessa sub plot was not needed.
When you realized the movie tie-in led to Alessa’s inclusion.
I actually enjoyed Origins. To me it was the best out of the three "western" games. It was much closer in ambience to the original Silent Hills from the maps to the music. It sucked they tried to retcon stuff. It would've been better if it had been a stand-alone story with no relation to the original game.
Origins have nothing to do with Silent Hill so everything else is pointless to even mention anyways... the end
This was insightful as shit. Muse is talented as fuck.
Other curse words to express myself. Fart.
Gotta play the psp version of origins. Runs way better.
It gives strange vibes, just like homecoming, it doesn't have the same edge as the others. They're... kind of boring. If you will.
Japanese fans wouldn’t like me. I love SH4 and I just cannot stand Travis Grady.
I love the room as well, but origins was faithful to the first three games. I didn’t mind Travis. What I did mind was not being able to see anything when exploring the insides of the buildings. The flashlight barely illuminates your walking path. You can’t see anything.
So 5h3 gist is "game bad, but slightly American so good"
Travis can beat anything with ouwn hands! Typical american trucker.
I'm middle-east european.
well hallo the game isn't for America's only it is for all of the world
I can only understand liking SH Origins if it was your very first SH or at least as a grown up revisiting the games. Otherwise it's just a far weaker SH game than any of the first 4. It's like they're trying to clone the first 4, but without any direction, while adding pointless mechanics that were hip at the time, like breakable weapons.
