- This vlog is about the KARIOKOR Hand Craft market one of the biggest handcraft market in the world
it is an Open air market where different crafts take places. The types of crafts that take place here are bead-work, basketry, and painting by the locals
Kariokor Market in Nairobi is one such place where Juakali artisans have redefined the art of shoe manufacturing. No complex leather tanning or dyeing facilities - that can be done by specialists at the Industrial Area. The artisans do not have to manufacture shoe soles either - those too can be gotten ready to fix, once again from the Industrial Area. All what the artisans have are humble sheds and simple tools, coupled with the expertise and flair to convert rolls of leather into any top-of-the-range shoe, belt, or wallet design while you wait. What's more, they will offer the product to you at a fraction of the cost of a similar one at leading designer shops in town.
Kariokor market is renowned for its unique African jewellery, curios, decor items, leather goods and fabrics. The market has over 200 stalls where one can purchase various items at wholesale or retail prices both for local and international consumption. Unknown to many, most of the wares sold in other curio markets (a significant pull to foreigners and locals) emanates from the cluster.
The open-air market also houses local textile and garment industries which are crucial in industrialization and nation branding and are Kenya’s second-largest manufacturing industry after food processing. Many Kenyans and international companies are sourcing locally made apparel as the sector rebounds after many years of decline.
Kariokor market also has a leather cluster, which is the biggest producer of leather products by MSMEs in the Country and Eastern Africa.
The market has been undergoing a facelift after the Nairobi government signed a deal with the Kenya Leather Development Council. Before the renovation, the old Kariokor market accommodated 1,000 traders, but the new market is expected to house at least 10,000 workers in three years. The revamped market will be installed with the latest technological equipment expected to aid in the manufacture of quality shoes and other leather products.
Another important factor that has contributed to low cost of goods is that a manufacturer does not have to do all the production work at his premises. There is a lot of outsourcing of some of the processes. For instance, one can have the shoe patterns designed by the best designer around, have the pieces cut out by yet another person who specializes in that area, before bringing the pieces back for stitching and fitting of soles.

Besides creating employment for a whole lineup of craftsmen, this method of production has promoted specialization and brought about expertise. This guarantees production of high-quality goods which can effectively compete with those produced by big industries or imports from abroad. Indeed, some of the pioneers in this trade had years of experience at various collapsed local shoe companies, though majority of the artisans have been trained at the market through apprenticeship.
this market should be on everyone's list of 'Places to visit' while in Nairobi. Not only does one get the chance to browse through artwork pieces, jewellery, African inspired home decor pieces but also to get to see these amazing artists at work. There are tailors working on the different types of bags, women using beads to create beautiful jewellery, weaving baskets & even carving the different sculptures.
