    I used mine about 8 times this week on a long trip. We charged mainly at Electrify America and it was cheaper than Tesla at .31 with a $4 monthly membership. The small pin on the adapter locks the button on the ccs plug from being depressed. The u shaped foam piece that comes with the case slides between the adapter and the car for added support. Before ordering make sure your tesla is ccs compliant in your tesla info. I'm very happy I bought it.

    CCS1 has a long way to go and really should have just been abandoned for Tesla's connector when it was early enough to do it, but industry sentiment with Tesla was different during the adoption of high speed charging. Great to have the option to use CCS1 in today's climate, but Tesla is many years ahead of everyone else in terms of development and reliability,

    A+ for the video; C- for the experience. I wish you had mentioned, for those not aware, before they rush out, this adapter does not work on all Teslas. (My 2021 M3P indicates CCS Adaptor Support: Not Installed, requiring a hardware mod to the ECU before I could use it) As always, enjoy your videos.

    My experience with rapid charging goes back three years now, travelling cross-country in a Tesla towing a small trailer, which severely limited range. Particularly in the Southwest, the Superchargers were barely spaced close enough to meet our needs. I kept tabs on third-party charging locations even though I would only be able to use Level 2 if I needed to. I found no location where an unusually large gap in Tesla superchargers existed where a third-party charger would help bridge the gap.
    The situation could have clearly changed in the ensuing years but I think it more likely that Tesla would have closed the gaps rather than third-party rapid chargers. I would encourage anyone interested in the backup of CCS to evaluate available locations in their planned areas of travel to determine if the backup has value to them.
    That said, I appreciate that effort is being made to provide the alternative and truly appreciate this channel for evaluating its performance. It has earned my subscription.

    Here in Idaho we use our adapter on a regular basis for road trips. It can cut a few hours out of a road trip from Nevada to Boise. I also have a frunk full of six other adapters “just in case”. • @FalconFour
      @FalconFour Год назад

      You can't plug the Tesla CCS adapter into the car first. The adapter is entirely passive. There are no electronics inside. The reason you can't plug it into the car first is physical: you see that little pin sticking out of the adapter? That's a latch lock. It slides over the latch of the CCS handle and locks it from being pressed. If you plug it into the car first, you block the CCS plug from being inserted. So, there you go.

    • @FalconFour
      @FalconFour Год назад

      That's because kW is not a realistic measurement -- it's a result of amps*volts. Cables and stations are amp-limited, not kW-limited. You'd probably find that the EVgo station here is limited to 100 or 125 amps (looks more likely 100 amp). Thus, you end up with 34kW or so: 340 volts * 100 amps = 34000 watts. The car uses 4 (RWD) to 8 (dual motor) kW to heat the battery any time you're DC charging, which is massively wasteful - but that's what you see in the discrepancy between station and car.
      That particular EVgo station is terrible - but if you go to a "350kW" EA or EVgo station, you can expect to get 180-194kW there.

      The charge handle disabled the disconnect latch when charging

    • @FalconFour
      @FalconFour Год назад

      The button is both a physical lock and a signal to the car. The adapter locks the latch/button though. It is NOT the correct way to stop charging on CCS. There is a switch on the button that serves as an emergency-stop if someone (as in this video) tries to force the button and bend it past the lock, triggering the button and forcing an emergency stop from both the car's side and the station side. If you pay attention to the alerts in the car, it'll also chide you for doing this.
      So no, the lock button on the CCS handle is both physical and electrical as well - just like Tesla's. You're just not supposed to stop charging that way.

    Was torn between ordering a KIA EV6 GT-LINE AWD or a Tesla Model Y long range. This video is the last straw. Regardless of how nice the EV6 appears, even with the growth in the non Tesla US charging network, it is clear to me that anyone wishing to use their EV for occasional long distance travel CAN NOT rely on non-Tesla charging networks. There are just too many, out of order, faulted, no power, network error messages coming from these systems. Many are also of the 50 KWh variety meaning charging sessions are going to take an hour rather than 20 or 30 minutes. The ONLY reliable charging network in operation in the US, now the UK, Europe and China is the Tesla system. Amazing how these other charging systems have had years to prepare and when they get chargers up and running they still cannot even maintain them. Of course, if you do not plan more than one or two long trips a year, and can charge at home, then, by all means, consider an alternative to Tesla, but otherwise the support system is just NOT there. IMHO

    I keep hearing how great the Super Charger network is, but I have seen more and more people charging their Teslas at Electrify America, which as we know has enough problems without Teslas taking up the few working stalls. I expect a similar response from most Tesla owners if Elon ever opens up the Super Chargers to my Ioniq 5.I would prefer to keep the two systems separate at least until the CCS infrastructure in more built out.

    • @barrybmw6101

      Keeping Teslas a non-tesla split will always result in less overall availability/capacity. But you are right, Tesla needs to open up to non-Tesla’s for max availability to be reached.

    • @evatrics5902
      @evatrics5902 2 года назад

      @@barrybmw6101 opening up the Super Chargers is going to have serious ramifications for Tesla owners since all Tesla's have the charge port in the left rear fender. My Ioniq 5 has the charge port in the right rear fender. With the current cable length on a super charger, I would have to park in the stall to the left of the charger and block two spots. A Mach E or Taycan would have to parallel park if front of the chargers door the cable to reach. Tesla has work to do to open up the chargers. This would open up some charging voids for CCS owners. I think CCS chargers are going to explode due to the federal support for charging infrastructure and if Elon want's to get some of that action he has to open up the Super Chargers. Elon often decides Tesla doesn't need cash with strings so who knows what Tesla will do.

      @@evatrics5902Tesla will think this through before deciding on an implementation plan. I think they will install a 2nd cable per stall that is longer and thus can reach charge ports on the other side of the car. I do not think they will use the current Tesla cable and connector with an adapter for CCS. Now, look at the Audi E-Tron and the front side location, the cable needs to be long enough for that odd/non-optimal charging port location. As for the extra traffic, non-Teslas are still low in numbers at the moment so it will give time for Tesla to install more charging stalls at each location based on the usage statistics they see.

My advice to anyone buying an EV, Do not spend more than $40,000 and charge at home and use the car for short trips. I tested the Bolt and I liked it for the price. Specially with the the new tax incentive. GM will also install free a charge connector on your garage. it will be a great deal . I unfortunately will not qualify .As it stands of now the tax incentive cut off is $55.000. I missed it by $990. Bummer! PS save your money by not buying the adapter.

    • @epcalderhead

      "Then other EVs will really take off leaving Tesla behind." Who do you see bypassing Tesla? I don't see any manufacturers capable of, 1. acquiring the batteries needed to produce more cars than Tesla. 2. Being able to produce EV's profitably, especially at the margin Tesla can, thanks to manufacturing techniques like gigacastings. Legacy auto is drowning in debt. Look at their Altman Z-score compared to Tesla's. 3. Legacy auto is *terrible* at software. With EV, software is crucial. Can you see Ford, GM or VW anytime soon being able to offer OTA updates like Tesla does that makes the car SO much better than when first purchased? Side thought: where is Toyota? The legacy's biggest threat is EV's from China. Tesla is Apple and all the other EV makers are Android.
      You also make the mistake of not understanding the TAM for EV's. Other car makers making EV's are not Tesla's competition. Gas cars are Tesla's competition. My fear is legacy auto is so inept that cannot make enough EV's for the population that will not buy a Tesla for any number of reasons, and slowing down the EV transition.
      The last thing you don't understand is AutoPilot and FSD. They are game changers that legacy will never be able to match.
      Rivian and Lucid have a long way to go just to survive and become relevant.
      Looking forward to understanding you thesis.

    This is EXACTLY what is wrong with charging at non-Tesla chargers. Cell phone networks used to be that way you had to have an "account" on every network. They came up with roaming so folks could travel with their phone. Charging should be the same way. If your car has one account all other networks should let you plug-n-charge at any network without delay. It doesn't matter how fast cars can charge if you spend the first half hour trying to figure out how to pay.

    Tesla Superchargers ARE THE FUTURE of EV charging. Whoever says otherwise (yes politicians I'm talking mostly to you) have no common sense. Just looking at the size of the plug gives you some good idea of who is in the future and who is in the past. And speed? No much to say, Tesla is also way in the future. And by the time all others get to be at the current level Tesla is now, Tesla will be way more advanced. Stop the stupidity, and make it federal already, the entire country should make Tesla superchargers the standard. And the rest of the world should also do the same (hint hint EU). Just go on a road trip and stop at EV charging areas, you will see the Tesla superchargers packed, and nobody on the rest. Even if there is a line of Teslas waiting, we will not go and use a different charging station. It just doesn't make sense. I just saw it with my own eyes this past weekend, I had to wait for about 15 minutes in line to get to a supercharger in the Turnpike, there were about 6 regular chargers available too... none of them in use. The line of Teslas was exclusively for the Tesla superchargers. Cheers
