I listen to Audiobooks to stay engaged while I drive. I picked up "The Exorcist" to kick off spooky season. It's the only Audiobook I finished in a day. I sat in a chair and was totally enthralled. I truly loved his narration.
Great video! I appreciate your insight into horror as it's not something I generally read but I am wanting to pick one up for the season. I'll definitely be getting at least one of these!
Great list! Couldn't agree more with you on Salems Lot. My favorite Stephen king book of all time! That books has so much subtle, creepy horror in it I love how it builds slowly. After awhile the town just becomes dead Businesses shut down, no one on the streets any more, people are gone...
i like the conversational feel of your descriptions for each book, it feels like i’m listening to a friend tell me about a book they loved. i prefer it to the more typical formal reviews that i’ve found on booktube :) i own a copy of IT that i haven’t yet read-i guess this is my sign to pick it up!
Subscribed. On the fact that you recommended Tananarive Due. Who's someone who doesn't get her flowers. She's up there in my top 5 favorite author. Appreciate the list of books, I've added a few to my TBR. Thanks!😊
Thanks for subscribing, Kayla! I hope you enjoy the books you added to your TBR. Tananarive is a great writer who definitely deserves to have a bigger readership. I've also read her collection Ghost Summer which was really good too.
I have to agree with you on many of your horror book favorites. The Only Good Indians, The Last House on Needless Street, Salem's Lot and Nos4A2 all great. I'm looking forward to reading The Reformatory it's on my TBR. My top 10 in no particular order My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman (released 2024 and already on my favorite list) House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski The Shining by Stephen King Summer of Night by Dan Simmons 14 by Peter Clines The September House by Carissa Orlando The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey The Traveling Vampire Show by Richard Laymon The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft
Hope you enjoy The Reformatory whenever you get around to reading it. You've got a good top 10 list. I've only read The Shining and My Heart is a Chainsaw out of those.
I've read your top three and I love those as well. I love The Last of Us video games so I need to read The Hollow Kind. Actually the rest of your list is on my TBR.
Just a fair warning The Hollow Kind isn't post apocalyptic with zombie like creatures in it like The Last of Us, just the fungal aspect of plays a small part in the book. Just gave me Last of Us vibes at times.
I will say, I agree 100% on Salem’s Lot. That book freaked me out. But for absolute raw horror, I have to go with Brian Lumley, and in particular, The Source. Book III of the Necroscope series. Have you read him, and do you like his work? Man, if you love vampires, this series will keep you entertained for weeks.
@BradProctorReads of course when I read it I was 19 and pretty gullible, so I believed it was all true. At one point the priest develops hives on his palms that are red and itchy. After I read that the next day I had the same symptoms. Freaked me out. I realized later it was psychosomatic and I was working all day in wet, cold environment that irritated my hands.😆
Awesome list! Michael McDowell is one of my favorite authors. NOS4A2 is in my top 10, definitely the best of Joe Hill. Swan Song is number one on my list, great choice. IT got me into horror and was the first Stephen King book I ever read. I've just re-read Salem's Lot- a horror masterpiece. Great video!
Thanks, Cliff! What's your favorite Michael McDowell book? I'm glad I finally got around to reading Swan Song this year. An absolutely amazing book. I want to reread Salem's Lot now after having watched the new movie.
@@BradProctorReads Hi Brad, it is probably The Elementals, but I also really enjoyed The Amulet and Cold Moon over Babylon. Have a great reading month!
Cold Moon Over Babylon is one I really want to read. I wish his books weren't impossible to find out in bookstores, I really like to avoid buying books online if I can help it. Hope you have a great reading month too, Cliff!
I’ve heard The Elementals get good reviews on other channels too. I read Michael McDowell’s Cold Moon Over Babylon and thought it was totally lame. I’d like to hear this channel’s or someone else’s opinion on that book to see who I can trust and if I should one day give The Elementals a chance.
The Elementals is the only book I've read from McDowell so I can't say if Cold Moon Over Babylon is any good or not. What was it that you didn't like about it?
@ the story was “told” to you. There was nothing mysterious, nothing scary, no believable motivations, no likable characters, whatever supernatural aspects were in it felt like they were just added to make it a ghost story and It went on and on until the end when the author decided to just kill people off. Before this I read Cunning Folk by Adam Nevill and really enjoyed it and after Cold Moon I read Phantoms by Dean Koontz and really enjoyed that. Sandwiched between them Cold Moon was a waste of precious time. I def recommend those other two.
I often forget how old I am. I read Stephen King's IT and 'Salems Lot a very, very long time ago (possibly before you born 😅). If you want some super fantastic Stephen King, read his short story collections (Night Shift, Skeleton Crew, Nightmare and Dreamscapes). He can't babble on and so the stories are much tighter than his novels.
When Salem's Lot came out in 1975 I wasn't born yet lol. Out of the short story collections you mentioned I've only read Night Shift but I loved that one. His newest one You Like It Darker is also really good.
I like your picks!! (I have most of these 🤗). I LOVED The Last House on Needless Street. So good. I just finished Salem's Lot and was sad it was over. Have you read The Dead Zone by SK? It's my fave. Nice video. Thanks! *SUBSCRIBED*
Thanks for subscribing, Kristiana! Glad you enjoyed the video. Last House was soo good, it literally made my jaw drop lol. I haven't read The Dead Zone yet but I've heard it's really good.

this video has really helped me decide on what i should read/listen to in october
That's awesome to hear! Hope you have a great reading month in October.
The Elements is probably the funniest horror novel I've ever read. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
It's such a good book.
Amazing list! All the good Indians, NS4A2 and last house… are all on my top ten. I’d add carrion comfort and a ghost story as well.
Thanks, Joseph! Carrion Comfort (I think this is a vampire book if I'm not mistaken so I definitely need to read it) and Ghost Story are on my TBR.
@BradProctorReads Vampire in a manner of speaking. Great book though. As is Let the Right One In

I agree, Salem's Lot is excellent. Thanks for the recommendations.

Swan Song is one of my all-time favorites.
It's a book more people need to read and talk about.
Great top ten, Brad. I'm rereading It at the moment.
Thanks, Wayne! I want to reread Salem's Lot to wipe away the bad taste of the new movie haha. Hope you are doing good, man!
The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror were the only 2 books that had me sleeping with the lights on.
I still need to read Amityville Horror.

NOS4A2 yayy!! The Exorcist, couldnt agree more yess. Glad IT made it on the list. great video Brad!

That's one I've been wanting to read for a while. I may give the audiobook a try.
You need to read Fevre Dream by George R R. Martin. Vampire book made me cry at the end
I have read Ferve Dream and loved it! I do remember getting a little misty eyed at the end.

Thanks, Kalvin!
Love the Butcher Cabin Books shirt. It's a great store.
It's a cool place. I try to go up there as often as I can.
NOS4A2 was my first Joe Hill book and boy did it deliver. I’m my opinion the ending was just perfect.
Glad you liked NOS4A2 too! I loved everything about that books. It was so imaginative.
I read The Exorcist some years ago. It really frightened me. Better than the movie or maybe better because of it.
I think the audio version is better than the movie, and that's saying a lot because the movie is brilliant.
LOVE the salems lot take
It's just the best!
If you like the Exorcist try The Entity by DeFellita
That's for the suggestion! I haven't heard of that one before.
@ it’s also a movie,for a woman I believe that would be more terrifying
"That one scene" is the BEST chapter in an otherwise over-rated writer.
