Well granny Joan you haven't heard the latest?? In addition to bubonic China is now in fear of a pneumonia that is said to be 4 times worse than covid-19 ! And this, it's not to be outdone by the swine flu they also have circulating as well. But to top that off they have a second phase of covid-19 already and they're closing down cities again.

Glad you approached this concern Dr John. For some reason, medic profession avoid broaching this conversation. I have read around March an American naval ship did a similar test on their vessel (of adults I presume!) and they came up with a similar outcome as the one for children. I believe it concerned coronavirus but I think it was not Covid-19 because it was too early to detect then. It had to be other types of coronavirus although then we didnt know there were other types.
However what you are concerned about (with winter approaching UK in a few more months), whether it is wise to get the next flu shot when Covid-19 will still be around, NZ had to face that dilemma when winter swung in. I have co-morbidity so when I heard of this naval result, I had to consider that very dilemma in deciding. I chose not to have it because I didnt want to jeopardize my health any more. I also considered keeping my immunity up there with Vit A, C and D and also that, with everyone keeping their distance, I would (hopefully) lessen my chances of catching any flu incl. use of sanitizer and soap regularly. This would also support other people through the season and in my workplace (I manage sick leave for 50 people) it does seem to have lessened the incidence of colds and poss flu. Supermarkets still provide sanitiser for hands and wipes for trolleys if you prefer, to which I employ when I visit.
We are still lucky to have only confined people entering NZ with positive tests but a few idiots continue to break out which puts us all at risk. It is a major task keeping quarantined returning Kiwis in hotels but have successfully catered for 15,000 (at least) returning home so far. The military have been employed as I believe in Australia the employment of security guards have preferred to have sex with their residents!

      Ring-a-ring o' roses,
      A pocket full of posies,
      A-tishoo! A-tishoo!
      We all fall down
The 'roses' are the red blotches on the skin.
The 'posies' are the sweet-smelling flowers people carried to try to ward off the plague.
'Atishoo' refers to the sneezing fits of people with pneumonic plague.

    • @josefk5659

I think it’s a linguistic/creole mutation. By the time the Black Death was going around, the American settlers would have undergone a mutation of their dialects by combining them to create a novel dialect which would lead to certain sounds and phrases going extinct. The phonetic sounds of “husha”, which would not be common utterance, would assimilate to something that sounds similar to something in their own vocabulary/dialect which still fits the overall theme of the rhyme.
I think this is one possible explanation why “husha” would turn to “ashes”.
It could also be as simple as someone not remembering the correct phrase, having a performance error while teaching it to someone else, then that person teaches someone else and it spreads like the Black Death itself.

@Me E antibiotics in general, as well as established treatments that have been developed over centuries
the actual reason why a plauge pandemic isn't a concern is a lot more simple and mundane - it's that plauge occurs on a regular basis in both developed and undeveloped countries and is easily controlled and has never resulted in epidemics or pandemics so far in modern times
It doesn't lend itself well to fast spread. It makes people ill very quickly, it rarely causes asymptomatic infection, it's not airborne or even spread much through breath. It's most infectious in the severely ill or recently dead and disease prevention is primarily made up of "wash hands, wash clothes, don't physically touch infected, don't touch dead people"
as much as people are shitting themselves over it, you'd think that the plague only just showed up after being gone for 600 years - it's far from a new phenomenon

Its the order of the rhyme, ring of roses is a sign of infection, bad air was a hypothesis of infection, so the smell of posies supposedly made the air good, sneezing was often the first sign that someone was falling ill with the plague, so atishoo, was the sneeze, then we all fall down is death,, ashes indicates the burning of bodies which in the American version comes before we all fall down, which seems to indicate that the ashes are there before the person has died.
