  • In this episode, we are joined with Dr. Lisa Fagin Davis to discuss the medieval provenance and historical significance of the famous and elusive Voynich Manuscript. We’ll be discussing the manuscript’s contents, historical provenance, its elusive and difficult to interpret script, and the manner in which the manuscript has achieved popular and controversial fame and acclaim regarding its supposed contents.
    Lisa Fagin Davis received her PhD in Medieval Studies from Yale University in 1993. She has catalogued medieval manuscript collections at Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Walters Art Museum, Wellesley College, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Boston Public Library, and several private collections. Her publications include catalogues of Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, numerous articles in the field of manuscript studies and codicology, and of course, research on the Voynich manuscript.

    It's really interesting how modern language theories and concepts have played a role in the study of the manuscript. I learnt about Zipf’s law in one of my compsci clases and was pleasantly surprised to hear it mentioned in this episode. Awesome content as always!
