Cool I did not see anyone making any videos of the Mackie 1640i lately (best hybrid mixer ever!)... I have one and was going to do something very similar, BUT since you made it, this saves me a little time. I do wish you made the video at least 1080P though (it's a little blurry on my monitor full screen). Short of that, good job!
Hi thanks very much for feedback - totally agree these are still very good mixers and stand up to more modern/expensive alternatives. And yes for time and storage purposes I’ve been uploading in smaller file sizes (though I do shoot everything higher res) - partly lazy, partly I tend to watch YT on mobile myself rather than big screen - but noted for future. Cheers!
Been doing the same so gonna be stuck on monteray for this mixer. Thanking of cloning my monteray to ex bootable ssd so if i upgrade i can always use that for the makie
So the problem with Ventura as you may be aware is that Apple in their wisdom decided to scrap Firewire support in core audio … so in other words the lovely plug and play functionality of the Onyx i mixers disappears … BUT there is a hack, that a coder has made available for free online, to reinstate firewire in Ventura OS. Think I mentioned in this or one of the other Onyx videos, that I couldn’t get it to work unfortunately but other people have … it’s not official so best to proceed with caution!
New Macs (or anything running on Ventura OS and later) will have Core Audio FireWire functionality disabled. There are some workaround hacks but not really recommended … and actually don’t always work. best bet is an older laptop (or permanently downgrade your OS, which is not a great idea for your main computer) - so short answer is no, as far as I’m aware. Best to check direct with Apple though!
Hi! I’ve never tried it with windows. My guess is that using a firewire to thunderbolt adapter might work to connect. But for the full interface functionality I’d guess you need to install the legacy drivers … check the Mackie website if they have any that would be compatible with your OS. Can’t guarantee I’m afraid as I’ve never tested it on PC. If you try it please report back your findings here for other Windows users. (The reason it could still be used with Macs for so long is that they have never needed the driver software … which Mackie stopped updating a LONG time ago)
@@jovantrendmaker4722 I see. Well at least if you are still using the older OS on your MacBook then that should work; good luck with the Windows experiment!
Hi, thanks for your question. I think I may cover it in this video or my other onyx video - but just to clarify, the multitrack recording over FireWire will not work as ‘plug and play’ in Monterey. Unfortunately, Apple have discontinued their support for FireWire in core audio with the launch of Monterey. There are some third-party hacks, but personally I could not get them to work, and also they’re not officially supported so I couldn’t recommend trying in case it fries your MacBook!
Great Upload. I don't use a Mac I use win 7 with My Onyx 820i that goes to a PCIE FireWire card and this works well in Reaper . I can select any input from the 820i channels 1 to 8 and my delta card 1 and 2 inputs very flexible and great sounding desks, plus you can daisy-chain 2 onyx desks together. My Roland tr 09 gives 4 usb separate outs which is not as good as the RD 9 but handy in many other ways.
Thanks for the kind words and also sharing your experience- actually with newer Macs ditching firewire core audio support it looks like Windows is now the way to go for this kind of use!
Thanks. Now I find a big downside for me is that it'd only track pre-fader level on firewire. The fader does nothing inside the DAW, a big downside since I need something to control the level real time, if I get a fader control surface it just defeats the purpose and it is better to get a preamp instead. The only good thing is the eq.
from OS Ventura onwards Apple has dropped support for Firewire devices in Core Audio, meaning to get the Onyx working as you see here, you have to be using an older OS (there are some workaround hacks if you google 'Ventura Firewire hack' but I couldn't get them to work, and tbh need to be used with caution in case you mess up your Mac!)

Worth it if you can. Or keep a janky old laptop around, with old OS on it, just for Onyx duties.
I have a MAC MINI with Ventura v.13.4.1... would you know if the method you show still works on this latest version of Ventura?

@@synthshed Which video, pleaes?
@synthshed -oops found it... thank-you!
Did you get it working on ventura
Personally I gave up. Couldn’t get the hack to work. But others have had success so probably my lack Mac tech skills!
Hi just watched you video, will the Mackie 1640 work on a new iMac with those connectors and the fire wire lead you mentioned?

Would you kindly tell us if these adapters are working under Win10?
Thank you!
Sorry but I’ve only ever used with Macs and don’t have access to windows machines to test this!
@@synthshed No worries! Many thanks for the super quick reply!
Cokd you connect this to pc qith windows 10 or 11??? I have usb c and tunderbolt inputs

I wondered if it works well on Windows 10, able to track fader level?
Never tried this with Windows myself but see the comment from @atommachine - might be what you’re looking for?!
I use the smaller model - 820i - and it works just fine with Windows 7 drivers.
Thanks.
