As an avid viewer I’d just like to say thank you! For your time, effort, frustrations, creativity, art, skills, advice and humour. For your changing hairstyles, hats, offices, backpacks, lenses. You entertain and help us. Thank you!
Good vid Tom. All so familiar. It is interesting as I think that RUclips has overall improved my photography as I now take less compositions. But I also think that the time spread over b-roll, drone etc.. takes away from photo time. All worth it though. Really enjoyed watching this one.
Good to see that even a seasoned RUclipsr has these same issues - shows how much effort it takes. There have been times where I've just given up with video cameras getting blown over and things, or I focus so much on trying to make a video, the images suffer. I need to try again and just persevere
Glad it’s not just us that feels that vlogging sometimes takes away from the photography side of things, or sometimes we just don’t feel like vlogging because we want to take photos. Especially as you’re the master of combining photography and vlogging 😊
Good and bad. The good: Thank you for going to the effort of making your youtube content, it is always interesting and motivating and this Sunday’s video re-affirmed that i would never have the patience to be a vlogger. Hats off to those that do! The bad: we need to talk about the small, light coloured, framed photograph in the centre background. It fights with your head continually when you are filming in your studio!
Thanks for the vid Tom! This is why I have TREMENDOUS respect to you and other people making these videos! Not only you have to carry extra gears, run back and forth to make B-rolls, etc, but also take risks of missing great shots!
Having pursued the landscape vlogging thing late last year for a while quite enthusiastically (and learning a great deal in the process of it), I totally understand how stressful it can be. I think that is part of the reason I gave it up myself. When you're doing photography just for yourself, trying to make these videos while not looking like a weirdo when people enter the area and making sure you have enough good footage to pull together the video accompanying the images can make your job as a *photographer* overwhelming. Not to mention the extra camera, batteries, audio recorder, microphone, etc etc. My hats off to you Thomas for continuing to put in the effort year after year. It's not easy, it can be stressful and also very awkward at times, but also very rewarding for those dedicated to what they are ultimately making (the landscapes). For a lot of us passionate photographers, it can be wise to take a step back and work out what your true goal is and just relax and focus on that alone.
Thank yiu for sharing the behind the behind the scenes. I did not realise how much effort went into your videos. What I do love is how you describe your thought processes on how you find, set up and compose your photographs.
I hope you never lose your passion for photography!!! I believe it comes through in your videos. Great closeups of your hair and love the calendar (my wife “acquired it” for her work office wall). One of my favorite parts of my Sunday is taking a break from whatever I’m doing and enjoying your videos!!!
I dont take for granted how much work must go into making your vids so pro, and it helps us to see that we all miss or fall short of perfection, so thanks Thomas for another interesting film.
It’s comforting to know that as an established RUclipsr, you still clam up by the thought of people walking by when you’re filming. Although I’m getting more confident, I’m not sure I’ll ever get past that feeling.
I've not really done any full-on RUclips vlogging like you Tom, but I have shot basic BTS stuff when out making time lapse, and even with just a phone or a GoPro, doing pieces to camera isn't as easy as people might imagine - not only do you have to be thinking about the edit and whether you have enough shots, but it also breaks you out of your creative zone and makes it harder to focus on the 'main event'. So I know exactly where you're coming from. I must say, in the years I've been following your channel I've often wondered just how much time you spend on all these things - half an hour doesn't surprise me, given how much quality footage you include in your videos. All I can say is that it's worth it for me. I just hope it's worth it for you. I'd hate to think that you're constantly frustrated at not being able to take more photos!
It comes so much across how much work you put into these videos! :) It is SO hard to tell a video story around each photo, especially when you're so dependent on those fleeting moments of light.
I don't see why you would get negatives. Everytime someone gives one. I'm happy letting you do the diffecult work. I have yet to hike up a mountain. I appreciate the work you do it's not easy. Love the fact you shared these tips, can't wait to try it.
Don't worry Thomas, one doesn't have to be a RUclips creator to appreciate what goes into a video. I'm always super impressed with your work. Please keep it going!
Thank you, Thomas for all of the time and effort that you put into your video logs. I have learned a lot from you over the years and see that your audience has grown a lot. It must take sooooo much of your time to plan, set up, shoot and edit all of the footage. This one was funny with the bloopers and the cowlick! Thanks again from Texas, USA.
It's nice to know that even those vloggers who are just under 300k subs still get nervous talking to the camera around the public. Your vlogs are so well polished and tidy..... It's nice to see your behind the scenes and outtakes. I look forward to seeing more of it! P. S like the baby pony tail!
Hi Thomas, as your recent US vids showed, sometimes it’s the story behind the shot rather than the shot that’s important and the effort you put into your work has always been impressive. It is easy to forget how much kit you lug around (slider, drone etc) because you make it look like you have a crew with you.
Thank you Thomas, for sharing with us your many subscribers who highly esteem your good work here with taking us by your channel along to your photographic sceneries, and showing us about the patience demanding process of the creation of your good YT Videos, you so generously and kindly share with us here on your interesting and inspiring channel! We do appreciate very much all your videos and it is true that there is a lot of thinking together with all the skilful work behind every creation of your excellent videos! Wishing you sir, all the Very Best and also safe travel and hike, in all the beautiful and amazing nature areas, you are visiting in the future! Best Regards from Sweden!
Thanks you very much Thomas for your information about "behind scenes". You reassure me. I feel the same sentiments when shooting on vlog trip. Thanks you so much!
I never thought that your videos were easy to shoot. It is very clear the effort that you put in your "behind the scenes". If I had to do what you do while taking pictures, I'd be very stressed out. Especially in those moments when you are waiting for the perfect light and you have to shoot the video at the same time.
The one above his head that's cut off (poorly arranged words, sorry, (lol) bothers me more. Please move it up (the picture, not Tom's head) and out of the view.
i read somewhere that, for a national geographic photographer, an image has to be taken in both vertical and horizontal compositions as a requirement. I don't know if it's true or not, but it really is usefull to keep that in mind whenever you are shooting an important photography. To force yourself to do that everytime you can will lead to some surprises or maybe, in this case like yours, reliefs.
Great video Tom, been watching your channel for a while now and really enjoy how you manage to show the amazing, the frustrating, and the making of. You’ve given me a lot of inspiration to get out there and try new things. Thanks mate 👍🏻 Brian
This is so interesting. Great to get an even better understanding of all the time and hard work that goes into the videos. They are very much appreciated, so thank you so much.
I can totally imagine this. I've only just started my channel and am only trying some basic video stuff and see his much is involved in just that. Laughed when you talked about people coming along. I get totally embarrassed when someone comes along and just stop completely. Guess that's something we have to overcome.
You made me take my gear out and do some landscape photography. And while sitting in the mountains, waiting for the light and drinking tea, I was thinking about how You do all this. It must be incredibly hard, and You sacriface a lot for sure. Thank You for the hard work and inspiration, Thomas
The trials and tribulations of being a RUclipsr. There’s always that warm fuzzy feeling when outputting a finished video though! Keep up the great work Tom!
Every time I go out shooting, I think of how much effort you put in to create the story around your shoot and capture it on camera. Thanks for sharing the BTS of the BTS Tom! :)
Enjoyed the video, Thomas. Love the self deprecating humour. Because of the hard work I know you put into each and every video I keep coming back. Thanks for all that I've learned from you.
Gotta admit I have a love/hate with Thomas. I enjoy the dedication to the craft, but can also tell that he's an introvert with some serious OCD. Dude is a perfectionist and sometimes it comes across as arrogance in the videos. Almost like, "What are you doing if you took 50 shots, that whole day was rubbish and there wasn't a single composition worthy of me setting down a tripod and clicking the shutter in this whole 8 hour trip." Do you Thomas, I'm sure you're a good dude and thank you for continuing to run your channel.
Great stuff Tom, I related to everything you said, Its nice to be reminded that Im not the only video creator that still tries to wrap things up quick time, when Im suprised by people who just seem to appear from the mist, or woods or wherever they come from.
Thumbs up for the presence of mind comment. It's tough getting all your gear together and set up and ready and formatted and settings checked and lighting done and white balance locked all on top of figuring out what you are going say or show in your video in a way that's entertaining and concise and well produced and coherent and informative and in a way that makes people want to come back for another video. THEN you have to edit it all together. It's a lot for one person and I can certainly sympathize with and relate to the solo video production grind. You do amazing work Thomas, the effort you put forth is not lost on us!
Thats why when people give an episode a thumbs down, it must be frustrating as the time, effort and patience that goes into making an episode is not appreciated. Considering sometimes just getting to a place to photograph is a huge effort in itself before the rest of what goes into making an episode is taken into account. Funny how you never see the trolls offer up something better. Keep up the great work Thomas and not long to that 300k is broken
Giving a thumbs down, however, unfair it might be, is not an indicator of a troll, more likely someone that did not enjoy a video but perhaps were not confident enough to comment. A professional youtuber would expect this. And as to your final comment, I don't like the present POTUS or Tory party but I have no intention of running for president or starting a new political party. I will, however, make my disgust evident.
The first thing that struck me when I started to look at your films that it must be lot of work and now I´m not even talking about the editing but the fact that you must first run away to set up the camera. Run back, walking past the camera and then back again to pick it up. Only those clips must be time consuming. Anyway you are doing it very well and it is a delight to watch them.
Was out in Shenandoah National Park early yesterday morning for an 11 mile hike. No photography plans at all, just a nice fall day with a buddy of mine. A few miles in we hit a section of trail that was just COVERED in leaves of mostly yellow and red. Chuckling, I told my buddy Kyle to gimme a second because I, "totally just spotted a Heaton shot here..." Got close to the ground with my camera phone, zeroed in on a leaf that looked like it was on fire, and snapped it. Nice photo, not gorgeous, but I honestly would never have even seen it without legit Thomas Heaton inspiration ;) Keep doing what you're doing bud, you really are opening up our eyes to things we wouldn't normally see.
I had similar feeling the previous week in Big Meadows at Shenandoah. This weekend I spent in Manassas attending Heatons 7 hour speech followed by another day of his voiceless presentation as he lost his voice after talking for 7 hrs 😂
@@oneeyedphotographer I absolutely did in August! Same park but I was doing a loop containing Little Stony Man. There is a spot up there with a small pool of water. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to try to take a pic. It was a quick shot with a few other people around so I had to kinda "steal" it. I have plans to go back when I can be there with better light. You can see it here if you'd like -----> instagram.com/p/Bm8ghawAZkv/
Thanks for sharing the extra effort you put on every video...I think we get it every week, but end up taking it for granted. It's great to see all the work and some "fails". Really appreciate it Thomas, not everything we see is perfect or done at first try :-)
I’ve often thought that such a high quality video production must take a lot of doing. Massively greatful for all the hard work fella. I think a few ‘comedy of errors’ outtakes at the end would be a great idea.
Murphy (Murphy's law) must love both of us. This weekend I was attending a combination Air Show-Car Show-Concert Festival and on Saturday I forgot my hat, my sunscreen ran out, forgot my cross body strap and no action camera that worked, well the first two I handled with a service station shopping trip, the third I got around by taking the wrist strap off my 200D and my mobile phone got some action footage I can use so I just adapted and carried on. Still had an awesome weekend. Love the BTS (of the BTS) videos there is a lot of work in setup and being your own crew is a whole other thing, but I'm enjoying it myself for now. Sundays a cup of green tea and a Thomas Heaton video👍
I thought the same thing watching the video of the mist trees! It would have been a great composition with incredible conditions, but I understand the stressful situation. Great video as always, you're such an inspiration. Cheers
As many people have already said, you have inspired me to get out and shoot, however, this morning I was out in the mountains and I kept on hearing you in my imagination saying "You should have got up earlier" "If you had got out of bed at 6 a.m. you wouldn't have to rush up the mountain to catch the golden hour" "Patience, wait for the right moment with the cloud inversion rolling in" ETC. etc. Pity you were not with me to enjoy a "stunning morning in the Pays Basques"§
Hi Tom. I greatly enjoyed your seminar at the Nature Visions expo in Manassas and the chance to briefly chat with you afterwards. Hope you're soothing that throat with lots of herbal tea. I got your calendar a week ago here in NYC. You videos and your work are a huge inspiration for me as I explore landscape photography, a very different discipline than birding. Thanks.
Thanks for another great video, gave a great insight into how you work & the probs you face! I love your no nonsense style & keeping simple & interesting!
I just saw you in Manassas, Va yesterday at the Nature Visions conference. I really enjoyed your your Friday AND Saturday presentations. In particular I enjoyed the TV pilot you shared. It would be fantastic to see it picked up by a network some day. I hope you recover your voice quickly.
Nice one! When you said "presence of mind" at the end, I laughed as my own has fled, time and time again when I've set out with good intentions of getting "behind the scenes" content. Keep on keeping on 👍 and thank you!
Totally get what you are saying. It is hard work and a lot of effort to produce a good video, sometimes I feel the actual photography can suffer a little, but not always. I think it's important to have days which are 100% photography and no video just to break it up a little.
I think you do a great job with your videos Tom, to find good compositions is one thing, but to then document it and produce fab videos is on a different level. Always entertaining and packed with good advice. On a different topic, I seem to have ended up with two of your calendars...not your fault; I clearly became a bit click-happy! One for home and one for the office! Looking forward to the next instalment...
Thomas look into quick clamps for the slider and your tripod. You can quickly take off your head clip it to the slider and vice versa, no twisting. I suggest the RRS Quick Clamp w/dovetail since you use the Arca Swiss mount.
Now I want to see a behind the scenes videos of behind the scenes of behind the scenes! On another note, I'm really glad you mentioned at 7:30 ish about including top and bottom / vertical, I thought about that myself watching that video! Monday morning quarterbacking :)
Feel your pain on that one, with Nathan heading off in wrong direction, have done some acting in the past and you forget things quite often, when having to remember lines etc etc, the tree in the mist though was lovely
Hi Thomas, great video, always good to see the 'how it was shot' material. 1 question and 1 request: The two prints behind you to the left and right - they look like they are flush mounted: are they dibond or some other substrate? Curious how they are mounted or printed; can you advise, and maybe mention a supplier? Also, is it possible to do a few more processing before and after and how you achieved the look videos... not Ps/Lr technique tutorials, but perhaps how you approached the processing of the image in a few steps. Thanks so much,
We all appreciate all your hard work! I always look forward to all your vids. And speaking of distractions - I was out at sunset last weekend trying to photograph our local lighthouse. Had my tripod set up next to the cliff. Just as the light got good, this dude swoops beside me w/ his long lens, shooting handheld in noisy continuous mode. To the other side of me, a Mennonite family crowded in & were chattering away. It was kind of hilarious.
Really interesting and entertaining vid, Thomas, it's always good to see how much goes into making vlogs, I'm going to be starting my own soon and have been with other vloggers while they work and it never ceases to amaze me just how much work in the field goes into them. Love your production and relaxed style, you manage to make it look so easy!
I thought the same thing on that composition. I was thinking why remove the mountains as they had great light, but it completely changes the mood of the photo. I could never imagine doing the video and making good compositions I think both would suffer. Good work.
Very healthy to see how much work goes into video production, makes me appreciate the attention to detail more. On the topic of firmware updates, I have no idea if this manufacturer has more than one product, but it would not surprise me if the need came from their app being updated in a breaking way for whatever reason, meaning it would be incompatible with the product until it got new firmware installed. This is the scenario I can imagine in any case, not saying it's a good way of doing things just that it's plausible.
Bloopers are good to show! Also your pal walking the wrong direction is me all the time. Never follow me. I am Directionally Challenged. I sure Enjoy your channel.
This resonates, especially after the subject matter of your talk. It’s tough this old making videos and you always stay professional and make it look effortless. A behind the behind the scenes look. Enjoyed. Thanks Thomas 😁👍
Tom, from the minute i watched your 1st video, my though was... how much work was involved to creating that footage. “... set up camera, walk away out of sight, come back get camera, set up camera again and then approach and pass site ., come back get camera...and so on and so on...! And that’s when things go right... continue with the great content, your cinematic video efforts are as appreciated at much as your fantastic photos. 👍🏻❤️🍷📷
Well done and thank you Thomas for this little insight video. Personally I needed no convincing that its no easy task to produce your vlogs but I'm sure that there have been some eyes opened . I look forward to next weeks video and seeing just how you break your camera!
Totally agree making vids is hard yakka but imho well worth the effort I've always been addicted to photography and now with me wee channel I'm learning so much about new technologies tricks and strategies as a bonus I'm thinking far more about my stills and visiting some amazing places at the the best times but I still shy away when there's folk around I'm full of admiration for vloggers who can do their thing surrounded by people awesome talent 👍🏼
Great video Thomas. I don't do videos myself (thinking about it) but you make it look so effortless. Put a feather in your cap, you're doing a great job. I love all the work you put into your videos. Showing the details of your thought process through to your photographing process. Now if you added in your editing process, then it'd be the trifecta of vlogs! :) No, definitely not necessary, but once in a while it would be fun to see your thought process in the darkroom as well. Thanks so much for all your hard work.
Great video. This year, inspired by yours work I decided to make some videos. I was surprised that I had no time to take pictures. But it really forces me to be more creative.

@@jamesdelaney3094- Exactly. There are so many panderers here it's silly, just above somebody wants to buy a copy of his sweater ....
I wonder if you realize you are a silly panderer? You are like a reverse troll, just as worthless perhaps.
Nice photo, not gorgeous, but I honestly would never have even seen it without legit Thomas Heaton inspiration ;)
Keep doing what you're doing bud, you really are opening up our eyes to things we wouldn't normally see.
I had similar feeling the previous week in Big Meadows at Shenandoah. This weekend I spent in Manassas attending Heatons 7 hour speech followed by another day of his voiceless presentation as he lost his voice after talking for 7 hrs 😂
Look for reflections in pools of water too.
Keep going! I enjoy watching and learning heaps. Thanks
Yah mate. The effort involved in the setup for these vids is mental, let alone the actual images we shoot. Good video as usual.
Yes!! This is exactly what I was thinking... all the work behind creating the video along with getting the photography done.
I thought the same thing watching the video of the mist trees! It would have been a great composition with incredible conditions, but I understand the stressful situation. Great video as always, you're such an inspiration. Cheers
Thumbs up for the RM Hatred, also loving the Mr Magoo tribute. Great video with great insights thanks
You are definitely a hard working man, Tom!
I just enjoy that comic touches so much! The one with your hair was awesome! :)
Cool video, good to see behind the scenes. Oh! and thank you for your calendar, received mine and love it.
The supercuts of Nathan tripping and your hair cracked me up man, hilarious!
Your hard work usually results in good images and pleasant videos. Greetings from Brazil.
Thanks.
I do geet where you're coming from. I'm just getting into RUclips & video, and I can appreciate the work you put into your videos.
I like how your office has come along.
My heart sank when I saw the camera... love the colors of your new office though!
I just love your videos , thank you for all the effort put into making them!
I understand, but feel needed, as it is very important for me to see your videos...cuz you're living the (my) dream.
Thomas, I like those short zoomed-in parts in your videos. Really humorous, always make me laugh. Keep it up, and with your overall good work!
Love your honesty as always
Thomas look into quick clamps for the slider and your tripod. You can quickly take off your head clip it to the slider and vice versa, no twisting. I suggest the RRS Quick Clamp w/dovetail since you use the Arca Swiss mount.
Now I want to see a behind the scenes videos of behind the scenes of behind the scenes! On another note, I'm really glad you mentioned at 7:30 ish about including top and bottom / vertical, I thought about that myself watching that video! Monday morning quarterbacking :)
Another great video Thomas, a lot more work is involved than most people realise.
Thanks Tom, I have received my calendar here in Sydney. Guess the Royal Mail worked this time.
Great video Thomas. I definitely can agree with the video side of things. I always have appreciated the effort you take to bring us a story. :)
