Man, after watching you do any type of engine work, I feel like a 9 year old who just got his first tyco Radio Shack truck. And on top of that I have a million questions! And on top of that thank you for donating your precious time to helping us all learn the ins and outs of how this all works, and how to keep it working! I’m incredibly grateful for what you do Adam, and in a short while, even though I’m a year late to this video, I’m sending you one of my engines to work on. You Rock buddy!! 👏👏👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆🏆
"It's easy to come home from a race and throw it up on the shelf..." - but that's NOT what Adam Drake does. 😁 You Sir, are the King of maintenance! I've probably seen many of your videos at least three times. Always helpful.
I think it's important that even if you don't have a specific "After Run Oil" you can use many, many other types of oil in your engine after use. 3 in 1 oil is cheap and readily available.
Hello, It's a long time since I was into RC nitros. You Oiled the engine. Good. You didn't after-run the carb. Needles need after run, too. The fuel if left long enough can separate into water and acid.... no good for needles. I used to have a mix, in a syringe. Fuel tubing on the syringe, carb open and inject until you see the carb flushed out - like a flooded start. Glow plug out, flood the engine from this point... and upside down (pull start) flush it. Plug back in, and store. Next time the engine fires, there will be smoke; yes. But it will start and run instead of a gummed up rusted out no chancer. And that all depends on how long you want to store them. If it's years, then you just have to do the same same over again. After - run gets old, too.
Nice video as always.. if I am running the next day I empty the tank and leave fuel in the engine and store the car at an angle with the exhaust lower.. some after run oils if left for months will turn into a jelly like substance so be sure you use a good oil or mixture..
Ya, it's fine to not use after run oil if you're going to be running the next day. I've been using this mixture of after run oil for many years and haven't had a problem with the engine getting gummed up.
Yet again, another legendary video by a legendary racer!!!! Thank you for everything you do for the hobby. We need more leaders like you. I'm looking at getting a oil bathed Adam Drake os engine. Do they still need to be broken in or bolt in and go? Thanks again man, you truly are the man!!!! 👍 👍 👍
I subscribed also love Nitro Rc it what the Rc hobby is all about. More serious then electric. Own a few Nitros Tmaxx 3.3 and Jato 3.3 there good machines. Not super racing like Kyosho or Mugen. But still fun and well made.
Thank you for this. I don't know much about nitro because i have an electric rc. But I'm considering buying one on ebay. So im doing research first. This vid is useful
Hi Adam, when i received my new Maxima OS BR 4 euro spec ,there was a note in the OS box saying ( crankshaft of this engine is filled with silicone, Do not use light oil nor kerosene ,et. for washing ,or the silicone will swell.Use alcohol or fuel for washing ) so i have been torn on using after run oil or not . Have you come across this note in any of your OS engine boxes and what are your thoughts,, kind regards Mark
I'm just a basher of nitro buggies and truggies but i take care of my engines. Should i let them completely run out of fuel or should i shut them down before the tank becomes empty and leans the engine out? also what is truly the best way to stop a nitro engine/ i know about the whole tdc method which i do but i don't want to harm my engine by not shutting it down properly
That's what I used to run, never had a problem. Even pulling engines out after 20 years the only engines I had problems with are the ones I used straight mystery oil in. That varnished up on me. The engines with MM and ATF mixed stayed fresh.
Yes, the nitro absorbs moisture like a sponge. You need to be using at least some sort of after run oil. I don't pull the engine but that is the "best" way.
You use marvel mystery oil for air tools right not the core one for 1:1 cars? If so the marvel not for airtools will sludge burn and could damage a nitro engine. I guess the reason why it didn't happen it's cause you race each weekend? Maybe im wrong too
I never use after run oil.! I have a tendency to drive my vehicles once and then put it on the shelf for years sometimes. That after run oil will gum up your bearings and you will have to clean your engine before you can run it, IF you let it sit for a long time, I simply drain the tank start the engine and then do my after run procedure with WD-40.. several circulations of that and you will be good to go for years! I respect THE DRAKE a lot and I'm not saying what he is saying is wrong at all, it's just a difference of opinion, I've been doing this for over 30 years and you don't have to be a pro to learn how to take care of stuff after that long..
I want to send a engine into you to get the piston and sleeve resized, am I supposed to put a pre paid return label with the engine or am I only supposed to pay to ship it to you, provide the info needed for you to send it back?
I run vp and I never use after run unless I’m putting away for over a couple weeks. No issues and when I open up the engine everything is super coated and nice
I was thinking the same it sounds counter intuitive I just use the marvel mystery oil since it smelled and looked the same as hobbico's version of after run when I had it.
@@rubenmejia4881 good that. Like I said it just evaporates, and it can actually damage your engine when being run as it has terrible film strength leading to the engine having more friction that with no oil. Counter intuitive
Yea ill just stick with buying another engine if need be. no way im taking engine out and in . If anything some oil is going into glow plug hole and done. How am i suppose to feel about my 40k drag sled i have not started in 4 years and in storage. if anything ill just tip it on its side each way for a minute and be done. To lazy to take battery off bring home and charge it.

I've been using a white Sharpie paint pen to mark the flywheel and clutch bell at bdc. Works like a dream. The bump box doesn't remove it that much.

Whats your opinion on putting oil under the glow plug instead of pulling out the exhaust?
That will work as well.
@@AdamDrake ahh, so good to hear as that’s how i have been doing it since I first learned about after run oil.
I love those bottles and use that oil because of that and it works great

Great Video.
Thanks!
Do you recommend plugging the exhaust pipe tip & the engine fuel inlet?
I usually just put all the caps on the engine to be safe.
I wonder if it’s a good idea to put some after run in the carb and turn the engine over with the plug removed. That would really coat everything?.
I'm just a basher of nitro buggies and truggies but i take care of my engines. Is CowRC Moo Kleen safe for cleaning the inside of a high end dlc engine? Brake kleen better? (non-chlorinated) Thanks Adam
If you run VP fuels do you still use after run oil? They claim it's not needed. Thanks in advance.
I still recommend using after run oil to be on the safe side.
So i would be-able to do this with the ad2 engine i just thought the sealant in the crank would come loose
This is the method and solution I've used for many years. It works great.
@@AdamDrake ty very much for the information an videos
Thank You.
You're welcome!
Hey Adam, you were saying that your after run mix is 80/20 . What's the 80% , marvel or wd-40?
80% Marvel's Mystery Oil and 20% WD40.
@@AdamDrake awesome , thank you sir!! The hobby is so expensive so I try to save when and where I can. 😀
When I flew nitro planes, we used 5050 marvel mystery oil and auto trans fluid mix.....would this be good for nitro car engines as well????
I haven’t tried that myself, but think it would work well.

Hi Adam. Do you use threadlock on the top engine mount screws
No, just a lock washer on the top.
Awesome video. You keep alot of us racers well informed. Ty.
Btw. Approximately how long is the shelf life for your after run oil?
Thank you! It should last a lifetime.
I still have after run oil from the 90’s. One bottle lasts forever.
Now does this go for long periods of time like if you have 10 motors and won’t to store them
It works great for that.
Hi drake, can I use a few drops of byron castor as afterrun oil?
I haven't used that, but I would like it would work fine.
How many Oz is your aro?
You use marvel mystery oil for air tools right not the core one for 1:1 cars? If so the marvel not for airtools will sludge burn and could damage a nitro engine. I guess the reason why it didn't happen it's cause you race each weekend? Maybe im wrong too

My pleasure.
Do u recommend caping off the exhaust port after every run or bash session
You can, but it's not required.
Thanks Adam
Would filling the entire engine with after run oil be bad for it other than obviously manifold gaskets?
Yes, too much oil will create additional pressure and stress on the rod when you go to start the engine.
@@AdamDrake I already sent it in paid you for the bearing today thanks for the reply though
how long does a nitro engine have to sit before really needing after run oil
It’s best to use after run oil when you’re finished for the day.
@@AdamDrake welp now I know lol thanks A.D. going to use this 3 and 1 til I get some of the one you use....

Wd-40
Is the mixture of wd 40 and mystery oil 80%mystery/20% wd40 or the opposite?
Yes, that's correct. 80% Marvel's and 20% WD40.
Skip , go to 4:03
👍
3 in 1 ok ?
I haven’t tried 3in1 myself.
you can watch this at x2 speed and save yourself 4 minutes...

WD40 after run oil? WTF?
I was thinking the same it sounds counter intuitive I just use the marvel mystery oil since it smelled and looked the same as hobbico's version of after run when I had it.
@@rubenmejia4881 I was thinking no wd40 since it deteriorates o rings in the carb and such. Also just evaporates after a few days
Agreed I used it once on a crankcase and the next day it was bone dry & I've never used wd40 again
@@rubenmejia4881 good that. Like I said it just evaporates, and it can actually damage your engine when being run as it has terrible film strength leading to the engine having more friction that with no oil. Counter intuitive
I use a very small amount of wd-40 to help displace moisture. The rest of the solution is Marvel's Mystery oil and synthetic oil.
