Im so happy you finally bought one, the P38 doesn’t get as much credit as it deserves to be honest. I have a 2001 DHSE in blue with a creme interior and i love it to bits (obviously ignoring the trouble with the air suspension) and i would never sell it. Hope you enjoy it 👍
The Hobbit says you might need an intervention. But joking aside, we had the exact same model, just had different wheels. It cooked up a couple of times towing the wood chipper home, and didn’t have the time to take the head off, it also needed a new rad and water pump. Work was getting in the way of repairs.
I absolutely love my 2002 4.6 in Bonatti Grey with 140,000 miles on it! Had to replace the water pump and a few small odds and ends but it has been great since I picked it up a year ago.
I remember being an apprentice in 1997 and my boss had a brand new 2.5 in the same colour combination as yours. That BMW diesel 6 pot makes a lovely sound. Will enjoy this. Good luck. 👍
Nice work Sam, another awesome purchase! I’ve not long bought a P38 off of a family member at grand price of £500, it is also the 2.5TD HSE and has been quite well looked after, I’ve given it a full fluid and filter service, belts, 4 new all terrain tyres, decat, remap and a straight thru exhaust! All helps with the extra ponies, remap takes it up to about 175bhp I think… Can’t wait for further episodes on the 38, keep up the good work!
Awesome! I loved my 2.5dse manual, in 2 years of ownership the only issues were a seized rear caliper and a faulty alternator. Plenty of go for a 90s 4x4. I do feel they get a lot of hate that they don't deserve, probably because they fall into that era where people were terrified of anything more complex than a relay. Love the colour combination, didn't know you could get tan leather in a 38!
I have two 4.6 Vogues. Saved the grey one from the scrap yard. The Icelandic Blue one is in superb order, Full nappa leather and it’s only failed the mot test on silly things like bulbs etc in over 22 years. These are awesome machines that definitely need saving. Great video, hurry up with the next one. 👍
Hi cant wait for this series ! as a p38 owner and enthusiast 4.6 hse Ive had a lot of fun sorting mine ! Heres hoping petrol prices go down again one day ! Steve
I’ve had 2 p38s. The first was a new 2002 4.6HSE. I have fond memories of that one. I was recently bit by the nostalgia bug and purchased a 1997 4.0SE. I spent multiple times the purchase price just to keep it going. As lovely as it was to drive, I just couldn’t justify it any longer. Good luck with this project, as I suspect you may need some.
What a surprise!! Great to see a P38, my friend had a Westminster p38 for a few years (diesel), apart from being very slow it was quite comfortable and good at doing Range Rover things...
Love the tan, love the P38 honeytrap/scrapyard (can it be called a scrapyard if the P38's are still helping others to love), can't wait for the next installment.
been watching all your videos, love them.If you really want to make this channel pop I would reccomend a L405 SDV8 as a project, your ratings will go through the roof, and I would love to support that. Keep up the good work mate!
Looking forward to this project. I don’t know much about the P38. Can’t wait for the knowledge. By the way, that footage of you in the yard with all theP38s was pretty awesome. You were a machine! A man in his element!
Can't wait to see how this series plays out. I keep trying to buy one of these but getting beaten to the punch, although i've been after the big daddy... the 4.6. Couldn't agree more about the future classic status of it. In 5 years time everyone will be saying they should have got one when they were so cheap! Good luck with it all!
Thanks, I think I'm going to need the luck! Yeah I think you're right - in 5 years time these will be like the 200 Discoveries are getting now. Would have enjoyed a 4.6, most here in Ireland are the diesel though.
Just came across your channel! I love these old Range Rovers. They are a very underappreciated generation. I also deeply love the tri-spoke wheels because they're so 90s
Well done Sam. Green and tan is a classic combo. I have been looking at the 2022 New Range Rover content recently - what a contrast! I don’t see any Kvadrat or UltraFabric in the P38….
I am going to really enjoy watching your progress during this project. I was looking to buy a P38 but could not find a decent one, and bought a 2003 L322 TD instead, which I love btw. Still harbour longings for a P38 though, and may still take the plunge once I've completed what I've started. Good luck and best wishes.
good seeing you putting it back to its old glory and its sothisphication. i second the M51 being sluggish especially the one i own. i've gone the other route, decomissioning the EAS to now sit on coil springs and now the engine too is coming out for a 13BT diesel toyota or a petrol 1UZ toyota...my war's just started.
Hi Sam. Looks like you've got everyone's juices flowing one this one. Me Included. Although I don't own one and never have. I have No Idea 🤷♂ why I am drawn to channels like yours. But hey. Onwards & Upwards. See you in the next one 👍
I have done a stealthy blue-tooth mod in my P38 using a Grom unit. Plugs into the back of factory head unit you had in your hand into the slot for the multidisc player in the boot. Had it for a couple of years now and works peachy both with apple iphone and Ipod and android. If I setup a playlist in my ipod, once in that playlist can even use the steering wheel controls to change track. If you want any detailed info, give me a shout. All the best with the new project.
the modern ones are now just made for luxury , off-roading is their 3rd priority now but i am not complaining cus at least some of the reliability issues are fixed and it can still go in mud and water .
had a 4.0lt 2000 p38. loved it even if the engine ultimately doomed my car, I loved it. my 2008 l322 is a step up in quality and functionality but there was something special about it. Get your diesel mapped and it will be cool. Good luck
very cool video. When I needed a more modern daily then my 300tdi disco it was so difficult choosing between a p38 and an early l322. Went with the l322 but I love p38's, very cool project and surprisingly you still see a few of them around in Belgium but all in enthousiast hands at this point
Got a 2000 Rioja Red V8 Petrol different beast to the my L494 AB but she fun and still gets some looks as like you say not many originals ones about now, now to fix the EAS thats just started to play up!
Great project Sam, lots to do!! Took me straight back to 2012 when I had a 4.6 P38 with LPG conversion. Just yesterday I bought an 2011 Vigye SE 4.4 Tdv8, you're partly to blame! 😉 Looking forward to the upcoming restoration!
That's the thing with these, everyone has had one at some point! So many good memories from being in one as a child and then owning one 10 years ago. Had to relive the nostalgia!
Cant wait to watch this motor grow.. fantastic choice again Sam waiting with baited breath for the next instalment.. looking like some of that lawn will be replaced with a garage lol.. cheers again Sam
Bloody hell, Sam. Every time I find time to catch up with your channel I end up wanting another project. Picked up my L322 this month and now want a P38 ! 😅. I'll need to find a house with a bigger drive shortly. In all serious great content and a pleasure to watch 👍
Well we’re in the same boat then Sam, I’ve recently purchased a 2.5dse p38 that has been neglected and with wood stickers around the vents. It’s a lot of work tho so you’ll understand my wallet won’t let me sponsor yours! I’ll be enjoying the series though, good luck!
Sure youll have it😊 just got mine back after limp mode happening last week! Was fuel pressure sensor, IID didn't pick up fault code strangley. LED high beam now fitted too👍 what a difference. Keep it up, will check out the merch👍
I checked them out and my favorites are the T-Shirt and Wall Art that call Jeep owners Peasants. Nicely done! I will get my allowance together and buy 1 or both of those. The other stuff there looks very cool as well.
Back in the eighties when they use the Ford aluminum block Mercury V8 that was an awesome motor nowadays people are complaining that their trashed out by the time they hit their first hundred thousand miles I seen some of my neighbors cars trash out that quick I took it off the showroom floor
Really looking forward to these vids, I've owned my P38 diesel for just under 10 years now and just can't part with it. Super comfy and a real pleasure to drive. I don't personally find it under powered as It's the only thing I have driven for the last 10 years, so I don't know any different. Although I would probably say different if I drove the latest RR diesels 😂 Can't wait for the next episode 👍
My Epsom green 2.5 resto has gone to the back of the queue due to my L322 needing the chain guide fix etc.. I have had a few P38 over the years after Classics and Three door. After restoring and owning classic cars I find Range Rovers the easiest cars to work on with good spares prices and great owners clubs. I can't think of any other marque which offers such a comprehensive support network for owners? Unlike my Sunday driver classics I would happily use an old P38 as my daily.... L322 relegated to Sunday driver!
I can't wait for the content on this. This is going to be better than awesome. I loved the P38 when I was a teenager and it came out. It was such a regal looking car. I'm so glad that you've bought this wagon. Your videos are great and the length of them are fantastic. So well put together, and almost Edd China-esque. I've learned so much from your videos. Excited for the content! Keep it coming, brother!
Hi Sam, fantastic video. I have had quite a few P38s. I just sold my last one about 6 months ago. It was the very rare P38 570 hse overfinch. I had it 8 years. I am kicking myself now. It was eprom green as well. I am down in Cork. If you need help look for bits get in touch. Looking forward to wat h the restoration of your P38. 😎👍
GD sam I will be looking at this p38 very good I have owned 3 of them when I was living in the states 4.0 and 4.6 Bosch engine much respect from Jamaica koooool sam
Great upload. Excellent camera work, and narrative. Fast moving as it should be, and comprehensive in depth of knowledge. Am I lucky? Living in Holland with my P38 one owner from new, and bought in the Isle of Man, still registered there, as there is no requirement for an annual MOT. As an Engineer like you, I do ALL my own work and my car is almost perfect underneath, in side and outside. Just subscribed, and may join patreon in order to support you, let's see how you develop this story. Best wishes .
Im possibly buying one of these a 1994 4.6 v8 150000 miles LPG conversion, runs and stops as it should, downside is the interior cluster lights, speedo etc have stopped working. Bin told this could be the ecu I can have it for £600, i dont know but that sounds cheap to me so may just bite the bullet and buy it haha
...interesting to see other people working on P38's..mine is 1997 4.6 HSE, and all is up and running just fine...it took me some time to learn about its systems, but after that, its very very nice ride..by the way, whats the soundtrack name at the beginng of the video, please?
She looks in more than good enough condition. I have no doubt these will be classics and also quite rare. They're iconic cars. They were all over the movies of the day, plenty of famous people drove them. Defenders already fetch a silly high price and where I live they're very common. You'd be lucky to make it to the shops without seeing one. Older Range Rovers on the other hand are becoming a pretty rare things and you can get them for much less. It's a great time to get in there. I think the Discovery 2 could also be a good buy, their value is already going up a bit now as far as I can tell.
The only problem with the D2 is chassis rot, that the P38 doesn't suffer with. That will probably accelerate their value increase as more of them get scrapped off.
Hi Sam, big fan of the channel. I have a spare Bluetooth preamp with a 3.5mm jack laying around and I'd be happy to post it to you if you'd like? Cheers, Steve
Over here in Ireland the V8s are pretty scarce - plus I have a bit more experience with diesels. Perhaps we'll go V8 on the next project though - hoping that fuel prices are more sensible by then :D
I have a P 38, 4.6ltr Vouge also in the same Green but with Cream interior, It is my daily driver and I love it.... It has its problems, but I think that with a car of a lesser quality I would have scrapped it by now..... It just keeps going.... I run it on LPG and don`t do many miles so it is not too expensive on fuel..... I will be watching to see how this goes.... :-))
Here in the Vancouver BC area I do not see P38s very often but they do exist. I started with a 98 which I did a lot of work on and then came across a 99 Autobiography in good condition so bought that and sold the 98. I drive the 99 offroad so now it is a bit scratched and dented in a couple places. Pretty amazing what a luxury car can do offroad. I follow Defenders everywhere without issue. I am keeping my eyes out for one in red to use as a street car. I also have a 2008 FFRR SC which is my current road car. I would say the dive train on these is pretty solid but some of the electrical systems can be problematic. I wish I had a breaker anywhere nearby with a selection of P38s. Breakers around here will just crush older cars rather than keep them on site. I did buy 2 cars for parts so I am pretty set for most things except axles. Just used one of my parts car alternators. I will be following your work on this car although having a V8 makes the engine work less relevant. Cheers, Gordon
Small thing before people rush out, all diesels upto 2015 are sticker ‘B’ ecology wise, there is B, C, ECo, and 0. B is now banned / restricted in a lot of European cites and faces very high congestion charges, very soon B category cars will just be out right banned. You think you know the phrase depreciation? Just watch what happens over next few years. Ps, i was a certified JLR salesperson, diesel engines suit certain clients in some situations, but don’t blindly stumble in ownership…
I've had my vogue se for 2 years and used it daily till I found out it's #23 of 26 made in 1999 it's Oxford blue Now I use my disco 300 TDI manual everyday and building a 300tdi auto into a hardcore off roader ---- I think the V8 is best as BMW no longer do parts for DSE engine and getting injector#4 replacement is about £400 if you're lucky to get one
Surprise! I've made another somewhat unwise purchase! #savethep38s
Im so happy you finally bought one, the P38 doesn’t get as much credit as it deserves to be honest. I have a 2001 DHSE in blue with a creme interior and i love it to bits (obviously ignoring the trouble with the air suspension) and i would never sell it. Hope you enjoy it 👍
What a great series this is going to be , already can’t wait for the next instalment. 👍🏼
Me too 😃 Love the P38 👍
Yes saw her for sale... hummed and hawed... and you bought her. Well done. She's 😍 lovely. Waiting for the updates...
Bonatti Grey must look awesome, didn't realise that was a P38 colour.
I remember being an apprentice in 1997 and my boss had a brand new 2.5 in the same colour combination as yours. That BMW diesel 6 pot makes a lovely sound. Will enjoy this. Good luck. 👍
Looking forward to following this story
This video made my day, best of luck with it dude!
Cheers matey, hopefully I can do it justice!
Another wonderfully “real” video. Thanks
Yes! Really looking forward to this series. Great choice.
Didn’t think your channel could get any better!!! But you have outdone yourself once again Sam!
Cheers Jacob, appreciate the support 🙌
Cannot wait for this!!!!!!
Gold 1998 p38 myself
An excellent video. My 1995 4.6 P38 is one of the SORNed ones, currently engine out for a full rebuild, and then a good going over electrically
Good luck with the project Sam. I'll follow with great interest.
😃💯👍😎
Excited to see this project mate - good on you for taking a punt!
I just got a P38 ready for the road! So far I've spent about €12000. Now comes some cosmetics and rust protection. Good luck with yours.
Right on!
Cant wait for the restoration work to start. Land Rover seem to make some great seats. Looking forward to the finish product.
My Dad had a 1996 P38 4.6 HSE in that exact same spec inside and out. Brings back loads of memories! Looking forward to the series 👍
I think that's why I ended up buying it, the nostalgia was too much to resist!
Had two of these a 2.5DT manual, then a 2.5 dse, fitted with a vogue interior
Used a tape adapter with aux lead for a few years in my old A4 - try that for some tunes - good luck with the project
Now this is the kind of content I like to find on a Friday evening, looking forward to the rest of the series!
been watching all your videos, love them.If you really want to make this channel pop I would reccomend a L405 SDV8 as a project, your ratings will go through the roof, and I would love to support that. Keep up the good work mate!
Looking forward to this project. I don’t know much about the P38. Can’t wait for the knowledge. By the way, that footage of you in the yard with all theP38s was pretty awesome. You were a machine! A man in his element!
Not many left. Proud owner of a Oxford blue automatic and tan interior as this. Wish i had a V8 too. Remarkable cars.
Oxford blue over tan sounds like a fabulous colour combo 🤩
Can't wait to see how this series plays out. I keep trying to buy one of these but getting beaten to the punch, although i've been after the big daddy... the 4.6. Couldn't agree more about the future classic status of it. In 5 years time everyone will be saying they should have got one when they were so cheap! Good luck with it all!

Would have enjoyed a 4.6, most here in Ireland are the diesel though.
I picked up a 2002 4.6 last year and have had people ask if it’s for sale just about every time I take it out for a spin.
@@Clannantorc704 same!, have a IG?
Thanks for this series Sam, I going to enjoy this one. Currently looking around at some decent P38s myself. I know, say no more… lol
Can't wait for the next video. Good luck mate🙌
Just came across your channel! I love these old Range Rovers. They are a very underappreciated generation. I also deeply love the tri-spoke wheels because they're so 90s
I also love the tri-spokes. Back 10 years ago I probably would have binned them off for a set of 18" Hurricanes but now I think they're great.
Great to see one being saved instead of scrapped. Nice job. 👍
Thanks!

That colour combination is outstanding! Cracking find
It is isn't it?!
had a 4.0lt 2000 p38. loved it even if the engine ultimately doomed my car, I loved it. my 2008 l322 is a step up in quality and functionality but there was something special about it. Get your diesel mapped and it will be cool. Good luck

The P38 is sort of nostalgic because it is from a great era of Land Rovers. It just has a more "Land Rovery" feel about it than the L322
Looking forward to this series!! The inlet manifold will look fab if you get it aquablasted!!
I love the P38's so it's going to be good to see this project progress.
Excited for this project
Got a 2000 Rioja Red V8 Petrol different beast to the my L494 AB but she fun and still gets some looks as like you say not many originals ones about now, now to fix the EAS thats just started to play up!

Also grab front foglights as well next time!
Best 500 quid I've ever spent, I've had my p38 2.5 for a year now and covered 15k miles without any issues
Bargain at £500!!
It's a Wicklow car ...yes the colour combo is great 👍
Cant wait to watch this motor grow.. fantastic choice again Sam waiting with baited breath for the next instalment.. looking like some of that lawn will be replaced with a garage lol.. cheers again Sam

Amazing can't wait to see the video!! That interior is incredible!!!

@@tristanboler2782 ah yeah I saw your email. Going to reply when I get a chance to sit down and have a good think 👍👍
I had one of these . Loved it for a while
This is incredible. I look forward to following the progress and ordering a hoodie 😂
Also, glad to hear about the merch. I plan to check that out.
Please do! Even if you don't buy, let me know what you think. I quite enjoy doing the designs but that doesn't mean they're any good! 🤣
The P38 still used the old alloy Buick 215 motor that you're talking about 👍
Mine is a diesel though so it's the old school BMW straight 6.
Good luck with the new project 🚘🚙🚗👍👍👍👍👍
Really looking forward to these vids, I've owned my P38 diesel for just under 10 years now and just can't part with it. Super comfy and a real pleasure to drive. Looking forward to seeing this come back to life would love a clean p38 such a icon n future classic !
This will be interesting. Providing content for a RUclips channel is about the only reason I could think of why you'd want to restore a P38 😄

Hi Sam, fantastic video. I have had quite a few P38s. I just sold my last one about 6 months ago. It was the very rare P38 570 hse overfinch. I had it 8 years. I am kicking myself now. Very Interesting indeed!
Think this is going to be an interesting project, looking forward to see this progress. The P38 is my favourite model after the Classic.
I'd change the front and rear lights for later ones, takes years off these, Looking forward to seeing the progress.
Not sure that he is intending to update it 🤔 I think he's planning on keeping it original.
will be following this mate. what sold me - that awesome toolbox you used when getting parts. ;-)

Bin told this could be the ecu
I can have it for £600, i dont know but that sounds cheap to me so may just bite the bullet and buy it haha
I have a 1997 2.5 I am restoring. Almost finished.
Sold mine 2 months ago and do miss it a little!
...interesting to see other people working on P38's..mine is 1997 4.6 HSE, and all is up and running just fine...it took me some time to learn about its systems, but after that, its very very nice ride..by the way, whats the soundtrack name at the beginng of the video, please?
I am doing the same thing with my p38 now - Today there will be EAS analyzed
The P 38 range Rover alive keep it alive it’s a good classic car I’m off to be fair and self actually
I think the Discovery 2 could also be a good buy, their value is already going up a bit now as far as I can tell.
chrissy off the sopranos, MJ in the Last Dance in a Chicago Bulls red
The only problem with the D2 is chassis rot, that the P38 doesn't suffer with. That will probably accelerate their value increase as more of them get scrapped off.
@carflog Layer Cake and 007 Tomorrow Never Dies are two more off the top of my head
Hi Sam, big fan of the channel. I have a spare Bluetooth preamp with a 3.5mm jack laying around and I'd be happy to post it to you if you'd like? Cheers, Steve
Great stuff!
Nice project Sam, looking forward to your updates. Any reason for going for the diesel instead of a V8?
Over here in Ireland the V8s are pretty scarce - plus I have a bit more experience with diesels. Perhaps we'll go V8 on the next project though - hoping that fuel prices are more sensible by then :D
Great content looking forward to watching the progress on the P38. Are there any upgrades you have in mind for the engine.
Cheers, I'm possibly going to look into tuning boxes for it but generally it'll just get a good service and tune up.
BRING IT BACK TO LIFE!
Wow! Nostalgia!
Well if I'm in the 1K remaining on the road club, long may it live.
why do you think swapping the OEM inlet to the metal type would be an upgrade.
