Hi Sam! great to see a P38 being brought back to life. I am doing a simmilar thing. Last summer I found a P38 with 110k original miles (180km). It had sat for 12 years in a shed before I got it. So far you have done all of the things that had to be done on mine. So I`ll just give you my opinion on the overheating. If the air bleed does not work, I`m afraid that youl have to do a head gasket change. I did everything but that as I dreaded the job. Changed the waterpump (has brittle wings and they tend to go), put on a new thermostat, change the radiator etc. It did not overheat when maintaining city speeds or idling, but once I got on a motorway for a couple of hours it overheated (once the gasket was pulled off, it had about 2/3 of a milimetre rip in one of the cilindre chanels). Everyone I knew who had worked on these cars told me to do the head gasket and I should have listened. Would have been cheaper and faster. Aperantly the gaskets on these engines are made of an asbestos composite and they go within 10 years, especially if the car has sat. Once the gasket was done, all is fine. With the overheating that is of course :D So as it most likely will have to be done anyways, I recomend to do it asap as the heads on these engins can warp pretty easilly and mine had to be polished/sanded down to level. Sorry for spelling mistakes, not a native speaker
I absolutely love the P38 range rover, I have 2. Both diesel, one manual and one auto and they both drive like new vehicles!!! Iv been very lucky with my 2 but then again I really really look after them both. 👍🙂👍
Just yesterday, Salvage UK Rebuilds appears to have been given a near identical P38 to yours. A couple of the same engine noises you had with your pulley. I think they may need your expertise;-)
Hi Sam, just wanted to say I enjoy and look forward to your videos, doubt I will ever get a Range Rover but you never know. It's just good to see normal maintenance jobs on normal cars. I am just restoring a 85 Corvette and did a cooling system drain, flush and refill yesterday with new hoses, these are also notoriously difficult to bleed the air out as the radiator is below the top of the engine.
Great video. Really enjoyed seeing how that coolant leak was solved. I thought oh no the manifold is going to have to come off with that back cross over coolant pipe (I think that 's what it's was) but you managed without all that extra palava. Excellent work.
I had a problem with mine 97 model with the temperature going up and down but never got to the bottom of it since then have had another engine in from a 2000 model as I think the block had gone
Hi Sam enjoying your series on the P38 has helped me with some of the jobs I've had to do on mine. As you have said the battery has to have a good belt to spin the BMW engine over so I have brought a small sola panel and connected it direct to my battery still in place on the car and that helps to keep it topped up when not in use 👍
I don't have a range rover, am never likely to have one and what I know about motors could be written on one of the perforations on a postage stamp with room to spare... but your journey with this and the L322 are, for me, absolute must watch videos! Another enjoyable watch!
Nice work Sam - had a very similar issue with my 4lt Petrol P38 and metal heater hose - I've forgotten the cost but remember it being eye watering!! Keep it up
Nice video! Thanks for sharing! I liked how you flushed out the system. Maybe for your next video you can show changing out the fluid in the Transfer Case and Diffs.
Great job and well spotting the leak in the pipe probably did you a favour buying a new solid pipe, love the small jumpstart kit pretty handy to have esp for those going on a long journey into the wilderness etc . Look forward to next time and would love to do a project like this.
Always park the drivers side of the car higher than the passenger side, this helps bleed the old girl. One mod you can do is change the radiator bleed pipe that goes back to the tank. The later models had a more level pipe that went straight to the tank. For the battery get a Hankook mf31-1000. It wakes the while car up😎
Slowly ticking the jobs off👍 great work😀. After ordering some parts for Land Rover's and Audi's in the past, that pipe would probably cost.....you'd probably need to sit down to hear it😆. More than it should be.
must have been lucky when I changed the radiator on mine, no issues with any air locks. I did make the mistake of getting rid of the old rad with which had a brass looking drain plug, I should have swapped it out with the plastic one.
Hi Sam just watched this video again which is very helpful i don't have a heater pipe leak YET! but do have the dreaded heater core O rings weeping! i may temporarily disconnect the core pipes from the matrix and loop them in engine bay until i can sort the O rings 🙄 I have just taken all the windscreen scuttle off and resealed everything as drivers carpet was sodden with rain water from leaky pollen filter/scuttle area now i also have the O rings to do as coolant on tunnel carpet don't we just love the P38 and i have only had mine just over a week😭
Meissler in Germany for all your air compressor needs Sam. 28 hr delivery to Ireland and follow up emails to make sure customers are happy. Sensible prices too.
Did you mix antifreeze with De mineralized water as tap water can be very acidic that's what causes pin holes in steel Brass alloy copper I've seen it so many times idiots putting tap water in cooling systems even just to top up with a little bit is a Big no no . Buy pre mix then what you have left you can top up with that , ps if you need to flush do it with de mineralized water about 18 ltrs should do it
I think there should be as many ways to fix each owner as there are p38s. Even dealers have their own way of fixing things. I think it is the p38's way to waste many liters of coolant. Unfortunately, I think you have a future of fixing leaks from your heater core. That is also how you try to enjoy p38.
Good one Sam, always been nervous about coolant systems, but looks quite simple really..think I need to add a topdon to the tool kit. Which bottle jack do you use for the L322? Got a service to do on L322 next week, seems I've only done 5k in the last 12 months! Will probably just keep to a simple oil and filter change this year. Up in Suffolk camping this weekend, filled the boot to the top!! Best long distance machine, cooled seats are great during a heatwave!
Bonjour Super vidéo très intéressante Pouvez-vous me dire s'il est nécessaire de huiler le compresseur de la suspension. Le mien était très huileux au demontage. Emmanuel
Hi Sam, always enjoy following your projects. I was wondering if you know of a battery starter/booster such as you used for 24 volt starting. I would like to get one for my Diesel LandCruiser.
Cheers! That's a good question actually - the only one I know of is made by Noco, but it's a super heavy duty one designed for starting HGVs, so it's really expensive. A quick Google search shows there are a few other models out there but they all seem to be very heavy duty compared with most 12v ones. I didn't realise some Land Cruisers used 24V starting. I've seen a few with twin battery setups but even those are still 12V.
@@SamsMotors Thanks for your reply Sam. I have had four diesel LandCruisers and they all have 24 volt starting after which all the electrics run on 12 volts. I'm not too sure but I think it maybe something to do with the high compression of the 4.2 motor they use. Keep up the good work Sam
I am running the same vehicle over here in Canada, likely one of the only imported. I believe my coolant is slowly leaking from the same pipe, what is the part number for that pipe? Love the channel cheers!
Hi Sam, just a quick question regarding radiators in general. So I’ve had a new radiator fitted and coolant topped up to recommend level. Have noticed that after allowing to cool after a long run the level is dropping around 1mm each time I’ve had car up to temperature so after 2 weeks since new radiator was fitted I find the level has dropped by 20mm from recommended level?? No sign of any leaks , any suggestions please
Isn't the point of the lock on filler funnel to keep it fitted until up to temp so thermostat opens and it then tops up the revealed empty areas - you removed it to early here?
Yeah you can do - I prefer to put the cap back on and allow the system to build the normal pressure, then top up if necessary when the stat opens. I used this to get a head of pressure above the tank to help the initial bleeding.
y drive that engine for 15years every day, way to weak in P38, y y bought all tools , extractors and everythin for restore diesel pumps R515 , swap an M57 mapped to 231hp in tha P38

Definitely true in this case 😂

I’ve never understood how that cooling system works with both pipes at the top of the rad !!
The paint had peeled off on my steel pipe but it was solid. I found a new pipe assy at breakers for $8. Woohoo. Sometimes you get lucky.
Great work Sam. I wouldn’t give much thought to the price of the pipe. If it lasts for another 25 years, it’ll have been worth it. 👍

Thanks to your information, i was able to burp like a baby. All air gone now.

That radiator drainer looks identical to the diff filler plugs on my Discovery 2. Has to chisel one off, replaced by Bearmac brass ones.
Yep, that's the buggers!

Ouch

when coolant filling for the first time before the engine is on should the bleed house be connected or disconnected
I just discarded the metal heater hose pipe and replaced it with heater hose, never has to be done again
If I use only clean water what will happen
Hi boss pls I have Range Rover p38 but is overheating to much pls want can I do to stop it
Great informative video, but, you have to give us the cost of the pipe. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Hi Sam good video as normal . Do you know wat make of engine is in the 3.6 tdv8 twin turbo 2010 sport thanks Sam

Oil seems normal ( no creamy stuff to suggest water and oil mixing)
I'd say to just check around all of the hoses that were disconnected for any seepage. You'll see white-ish residue if there is any coolant leaking.
Reuse the fluid from draining
Isn't the point of the lock on filler funnel to keep it fitted until up to temp so thermostat opens and it then tops up the revealed empty areas - you removed it to early here?
Is that in the instructions ? . Do you know the name of the manufacturer of that kit please ?
Yeah you can do - I prefer to put the cap back on and allow the system to build the normal pressure, then top up if necessary when the stat opens. I used this to get a head of pressure above the tank to help the initial bleeding.
