    On December 9, 2001, novelist and Vietnam War veteran Michael Peterson called 911 to report that his wife Kathleen Peterson had suffered an accident. The 48-year-old was lying at the bottom of a staircase in a pool of blood at the couple's Durham, North Carolina, home. Police suspected that this was not an accident and arrested Michael Peterson and charged him.
    As the Petersons were gearing up for the trial, French filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade came to them wanting to make a documentary about the case. He was granted a truly jaw-dropping amount of access, as he filmed the entire trial from inside the courtroom and was a fly on the wall in the Peterson household and with the defense team throughout the entire thing. Where does the staircase owl theory fit into any of the staircase movie?
    The Behavior Panel comprises the world's top body language and behavior experts: Scott Rouse, Mark Bowden, Chase Hughes, and Greg Hartley. They analyze behavior and body language in videos of public interest. This non-partisan group aims to educate and entertain, focusing on nonverbal communication, deception detection, behavioral analysis, statement analysis, interrogation, and resistance to interrogation. Through careful examination of gestures, expressions, linguistics, and cultural context, they reveal truths and deceptions. The Behavior Panel is prominently featured on The Dr. Phil Show and has its own show on the US TV Network, Merit Street Media.
    This behavior profiler group takes on the task of investigating the behavior behind the crime news that often forces us to think and feel the way we do. The Behavior Panel is a task force made up of four of the best body language and behavior profiler experts in the world.

    I've been a 911 dispatcher for 14 years. The part that first popped out most to me as a red flag is when he said, "She is still breathing." Usually the caller says 'she's breathing' or 'she's not breathing.' Not "still breathing".

    • @zenbumblebee
      @zenbumblebee 2 года назад +54

      Agreed. I did my Psy BSc dissertation on discursive discourse analysis and your point is spot on. It's just a weird thing to say. The guys were right about his tone too, he sounds hostile towards her questioning him about the stairs. He also does not mention the considerable amount of blood everywhere or that she is bleeding heavily, which is very strange. He doesn't even attempt to do CPR on her. He also cuts the call on the 911 dispatcher, when most people stay on the line in these circumstances. He claims it's an accident from a fall, when it looks more like a possible attack. Wouldn't an innocent person or a person who didn't see the fall and does not know what happened, especially with so much blood, say I don't know what happened exactly but she's bleeding heavily from head? Yet he immediately claims that she definitely had an accident, that she fell. The blood was dry when they arrived, which is too soon if she just bled to death minutes earlier. So she must have been dead for a while before he made those calls. Probably didn't mean to kill her but just lost it & in a drunken rage, smashed her head against stair or wall in stairwell with his bare hands. Sad as he probably loved her. Still took her life though! He lied about a lot & there are many inconsistencies in his story. Innocent people don't need to lie about time of death. Guilty!

      @jf5618 2 года назад +23

      Interesting! Didn’t even think about that point! I’m still stuck on the amount of blood he never even mentioned which in any normal persons head should lead to other potential causes rather than just fell down the stairs. Thankfully I’ve never been in what would be a highly unfathomable, SHOCKING situation but…pretty sure I’d be saying something about “blood everywhere” in the 911 call. Great catch Erin!

      Definitely a good point, but if I picture myself walking into my house and finding my wife like that, I could imagine saying that out of pure joy considering how much blood there was. Maybe he assumed she was dead, and said that because her injuries were so extensive he was afraid she might stop breathing at any moment? Unfortunately the only person with a black and white knowledge of what happened is Michael, the rest of us have to live in the grey.

    The Netflix series had me fooled. Throughout the series, he and his lawyer talk about how there wasn't any blood found on the ceiling. But when the prosecutor pointed out how she was hit and blood spatters were found on the ceiling, his lawyer did not object. I couldn't figure out why they didn't object. Then I realized the documentary was filmed for just his side. He made it look like the police were out to get him.

    06:35 What also jumped out in the 911 call is how he’s not speaking to Kathleen. Even if unconscious most people would speak to the person, calling their name, trying to wake them up, begging, praying - basically having some sort of intimate personable moment to reassure or show concern, even if they were seemingly dead. He is not doing that.

      The dishes left in the living room, while they went directly to the kitchen had me messed up..... and his admission in the final episode added to my belief that Kathleen DID find this info on the computer between dinner and her "fall"..... it would take a mighty saint to accept a husband who behaved in such a way. I mean, I can see it being POSSIBLE, but in the end, he ADMITTED he lied about her having KNOWN about it. So, no. In the end, I do not believe him. I knew absolutely nothing of this case prior to watching this mini series... and I wanted to believe him and I DID at certain points... in the end, I'm not sure I do. Could I convict him had I been on that jury? Idk.... glad I wasn't there.

    This call is the most important piece of evidence in the investigation, as he says he found her, but in the call, he talks as if he was sure she had fallen down the stairs, he doesn't say she is bleeding or that he doesn't know exactly what happened. For someone who was in the pool and didn't witness the fall, it's pretty strange.

    Wow, I had actually watched the documentary “The Staircase” a few years ago and truly believed this guy. Maybe I should rephrase this, I think it was more like I really wanted to believe in this guy. He was just as u described, this amazing story teller. He was such a likable and relatable person in a lot of ways. It was the moment u ripped apart him walking thru the last night him and his wife spent together that I all of a sudden felt like such a fool. U were so correct, he described events that took place all the way to the patio and then all of a sudden he takes u on this lovely walk down memory lane of what they would usually do going down to the pool. I never picked up on how the story really changed in the way he was telling it. It went from factual to fanciful. All of a sudden I got a chill down my spine when I realized her story probably ended with the patio. Whatever he did it occurred after the patio, they never made it to the pool that night at all. The story had just been this beautiful loving relationship on a starry night kinda tall tale. I feel so so sad for his children and her children, I think he really did it. When his children finally realize it all they will be so crushed 😢 In The Staircase when he was confessing to his homosexual tendencies and relationships I think it really was the core of what he killed her over. He was terrified of the world realizing he was homosexual. She wanted to leave him and he couldn’t handle it. There was this feeling of his whole world was crumbling around him. He destroyed himself over his own ego and this lie he had been living. In a lot of ways he lost everything over his inability to be honest about himself to himself. What was funny was during this documentary he confides these truths to his children about his homosexuality and they just laughed it off and told him they already had guessed he was and still loved and accepted him anyway. The whole story is just tragic. He killed her, but never really had to. He was too caught up in his own lie to just let it all go.

      Look, I think this guy is guilty, but this "they show no sign of grief" thing is not deterministic of anything. People grieve in different ways, some don't grieve at all, that doesn't mean they didn't love the person.
      I can say this from experience, because my brother died the beginning of 2020, and if I was interviewed on TV, I would imagine people would think I killed him because I showed no emotion. That doesn't mean I didn't love my brother, there's just a lot of complicated reasons why I am very pragmatic in situations like this, and don't feel like I can allow myself to feel bad about the situation.

She was his money supply. Peterson didn't do anything. If she left him he would have been out on the street.

    I worked at Nortel on a project for Kathleen. We were all so shocked to hear of what happened to her. Michael Peterson should be in prison instead of out on a technicality. It’s just wrong! I’ve seen him from time to time around town and he’s usually talking to himself. It is believed he murdered another woman years before Kathleen’s death and he was never convicted of that either. Same scenario - she too “supposedly” fell down a flight of stairs and he was the only adult there with her!

    The one thing that I caught ( which aligns with Mark's observation on the 'Clean House') is that he FIRST said they 'Went to the Kitchen' but then 'Back Pedaled' regarding the 'leaving the dishes for the next day' ... My first thought was if they were already on their way to the kitchen, the dishes would have been second nature for most people to simply take with them.

    • @marzipanhunt2870
      @marzipanhunt2870 3 года назад +7

      Yes you are right especially because the kitchen is on the path to the deck. There was a purpose in leaving the dishes behind. It was planned by Peterson to be a key part of his alibi. This was a carefully preplanned premeditated murder and not a murder that resulted from an argument and a confrontation. Peterson knows he is going to be a suspect after he murders Kathleen and the left behind dishes are left behind to represent a future tomorrow where he and Kathleen could clean up at their leisure. Only he knew that tomorrow was a future that Kathleen would never know.
      He ambushed Kathleen from behind seconds after they left the TV room at the bottom of the back staircase.

    • @StarsInBlackFeathers
      @StarsInBlackFeathers 3 года назад +2

      The dishes being left stood out to me too. It seems so bizarre that this couple with a picture perfect life would just leave dirty dishes sitting around to deal with the next day when it would have been easier to take them to the kitchen when they left the room. I think they got into an argument while having dinner, events unfolded from there, and that's why the dishes were still in the living room when the police arrived. Nothing about them strikes me as people that would leave dirty dishes sitting around overnight.
