    Having the right needle to suite your sewing needs can have a big impact on how your project turns out. While there are many projects that can be stitched using a universal needle, Jill Case shares with you that it’s good to know what other needle options are out there and what projects and fabrics they are best used with. Many sewing machine needles are very straight forward in their description. For example, jean needles are best for jean and denim fabrics, leather needles are for use with leather, and stretch needles are for sewing with stretchy fabrics. However, there are a few others, like ballpoint or microtex, that are a bit trickier. Jill takes you through each needle, their uses, and even some great ideas on how to store them.

    This is really helpful, I didn't understand why my needle kept bending and snapping while I was sewing. I didn't realise they make needles for different fabrics. You made it really easy to understand. Thank you!

    I have to rave about Schmetz needles. I just sewed a jacket from fake suede with a bonded knit backing. I started out with some needles I had been given, including ballpoint, and the machine was skipping like 4 out of 5 stitches. I went and bought Schmetz stretch needles and suddenly, perfection! So glad I didn’t have to waste my $50 worth of fabric.

    I usually go with a 90/14 denim and have been for over 30 years, and only if I purchase a machine and have the loaded needles do I ever step off of the 90/14 denim.

    Yes! And! A leather needle has a bladed point and actually cuts the hide. Being not fabric but hide, a needle meant to spread a weave (all other needles) will simply break on leather.

    A couple of 5 packs of needles lasted her at least A YEAR !
    She would have just laughed at the idea of "Change your needle for every project"!
    Is there something wrong with the needles they sell today? Are they just not as good as 40 years ago??

    I don't know if you answer comments, but if you do I have a question. I have several pairs of boy school uniform pants that need hemmed. The fabric is 97% cotton/3% spandex. I haven't sewed for over 35 years. I have a new Janome 3000 and a new Janome blue couture. I used the needle that was preinstalled on the blue couture, and as I hemmed I noticed a bit of fabric thread being pulled. What needle should I use to hem these pants for 3 boys?

    • @Studio7t7
      @Studio7t7 3 года назад

      Super stretch needles need a stretch needle or jesey or sometimes even microtex - stretch fabrics are odd! Sometimes you have to try a few different needles until you get the right one. Size wise depends on the thickness ofyour fabric. if you have a thick fabric you need a higher number needle, fine fabric, lower. Hope that helps. i have a video coming out soon all about this.

    This was definitely a helpful HIGH LEVEL overview, but would have been more useful with more detail. Barely any of the needles in the holder were shown beyond a glance, and nothing about that laminated diagram was explained. Way too much time was spent on the accessories in the beginning than talking about actual needles.

    But do you need to get a certain number ? If I have a 90/14 do I need to get all needles that are 90/14? I have a pack of singer needles and it’s style 2020 size 80/11 would that work in my machine if my needle that I took out says 90/14? It’s a brother machine and I have no clue what to buy for a needle. On another site it asked me for a single number when when I wanted to buy a pack of 90/14 needles. It asked what number an 8, 14 etc... any help would definitely help!

      90/14 & 80/11 are both sizes of needles so yes you can replace your 90/14 with 80/11 as long as they are not industrial needles. You probably have convention sewing machine where the head of the needle in diameter is round partially and flat partial ( sort of like half a pie) verses industry machine the diameter is a cylinder( the whole pie).
      Hope that helps 😀😃

    The Mypad and pumpkin needle storers were useful ideas, but the title is "Choosing the right Sewing Machine Needle", and several kinds I've seen for sale were not even mentioned, let alone explaining the differences and why particular needles are, or are not, suitable, so I still don't know which to choose for less common projects.

    My singer Futura states that I can only use Singer needles in the machine. I've used other needle brands before. Is this statement true, or is this just a way to enforce you to buy there brand only? I've seen little selection of singer needles at Joanns.

    • @NationalSewingCircle
      @NationalSewingCircle  8 лет назад +1

      +Brandi Hagerty Hi Brandi. am not overly familiar with that exact sewing machine model, however I would say that you can use other needle brands. Singer is a popular brand of needle, as is Schmetz, and I have personally used both brands interchangeably in both of my machines (one a Singer and one a Brother). What you want to look for when purchasing needles is that sometimes you can find needles that say 'Industrial Use' or 'Serger', where you want to purchase 'Standard' needles meant for home sewing machine use, no matter what brand they are.Hope this helps!

Because i have a basic sewing machine and serger I have a variety of Schmetz needles. Im currently working on an embroidery project with a Schmetz embroidery needle. The machine runs without issue. Good luck!

    I taught college speech classes x6 a year for 11 years, and other than one student who was a DJ and trained to use pause words (he quickly learned otherwise in my class), this was the absolute most annoying presentation I have ever listened to--dont' even know if the content was worthwhile with all the "pause word" distractions. In 2:41 minutes there were 22 "ums/ahs/and ahs--pause words"--45 for the 5:24 presentation. Without even grading items used for presentation and how presented or how much eye contact with the audience, the pause words alone would have put a "55" in my grade book!!! Hope this helps to be aware and learn to avoid for other videos. . .Topic could have been very helpful, but not with the poor verbal distractions. . . .
