- In today’s language challenge, we will compare Turkish and Romanian, with Şimal, a Turkish speaker from Turkey and Andrei, a Romanian speaker from Romania, going up against each other with a list of words and sentences.

Romanian is an Eastern Romance language primarily spoken in Romania and Moldova, and also recognized as a minority language in Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, Ukraine, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Romanian shares a lot in common with French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, however, Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian are the languages which are closest to it. So as a means to distinguish it, the term "Daco-Romanian" is an alternative name for Romanian used by linguists.
The Turkish language (Türkçe), which is also referred to as Istanbul Turkish, is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages, with most of its native speakers living in Western Asia, and significant group of speakers in Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Northern Cyprus, Greece, the Caucasus, and other parts of Europe and Central Asia. Ottoman Turkish, which was a variation of the Turkish spoken today, influenced many parts of Europe during the time that the Ottoman Empire expanded. When the modern Turkish republic was established, one of Atatürk's Reforms consisted of changing the Ottoman Turkish alphabet with a Latin alphabet. Today, Turkish is recognized as a minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Iraq, Macedonia, and Romania.

It's not "a lot of", but yes some of them are Persian, like çarşaf. There are other loanwords in Turkish in the video like "masa" which is from Italian. In the video, you thought some of them are Persian because those words live in Persian too, the words like "çizme" are Turkic words whether it is in Persian or Romanian, many of them which you thought to be Persian originated, are *not* Persian words in Turkish, they are Turkic words in Persian.
In Persian there are some other Turkish loanwords too, like açar, aş, ağa, ağız, al, alaçık, amaç, atabeg, otağ, ocak, ördek, ordu, arslan (erselan), armağan, üzengi, eşek, uğur, uluğ, olgu, uzunburun, iz, il, ilçi (elçi), yılkı, ılgar, bacnaq (bacanak), bacı, bölük, boran, boşkap, bayrak, töşek (döşek), tökme (düğme), tamga (damga), top, tümen, çağ, çavuş, çekme (çizme), çogor (old Tr. çöğür), çolak, çomak, çömçe, khan, khakan, khanum, khatun, dadaş, dolma, süpür, sürme, sallana sallana, sancak, sürtme, savgat, şapelak (şaplak), tapança, tuğrul, kaplama, katık (yoğurt), kaçak, kaşık, kalpak, kayak (kayık), kadagan (yasak), kurut (kuru yoğurt), karavul, kavurma (qorme), kızılala (alabalık), kışkırık (kışkırma, yaygara), kışlak (kışla), kaşağı (qaşow), kılavuz, kaltak, kol-çomak, kuldur, kunduz, kıyma (qeyme), kuğu (qu), kötek, kesme, keşik (geçik), kömek, göç (kuç), küçük (kuçek), gezme, maral, vosaq (otağ), voşaq (uşak), veşaq (vaşak), havlu, yatağan, yağı (old Tr. rebel), yalancı, yaman, yedek, yerak (old Tr. yarag = weapon), yesaq (yasak), yasavul, yağma, yaka, yıldız, yenge, yavaş, yurt, yüzbaşı, yuğ (yuvak), yaylak (yayla). c = dj, ç = ch, ş = sh, ğ = gh, ı = ï (y), ü = ue (yu), ö = oe (yo).
While Turkish language loaned many words from Persian, Persian also loaned from Turkish too. Because Turks and Persians lived in the same area for 1000 years and Turkic dynasties like Seljuks, Khwarazmids, Timurids, Ghaznavids, Aq Qoyunlu, Kara Koyunlu, Ildeguzids, Safavids, Afsharids Qajars ruled Persia while the official language was still Persian.

Aslında fırtına kelimesinin aslı İtalyanca olup talih demektir. (İngilizce=fortune)
Sofa and chiosc are of Persian origin and they exist in most languages of Europe . Also I'm pretty sure they entered Romanian from French. Palavra is undeniably Latin . similar to Spanish and it's origin is in Latin "parabola". With the rest you're spot on. All in all they are about 2000 words in Romanian language of Turkish origin, but still not that many considering they make less than 2% of the total vocabulary. Other notable mentions: geam, hata^r, cioban, berbec, cherhana, pilaf, farfurie, pastrama, chec. But not: liman (similar to Turkish but actually of Greek origin) or cosciug, cula, odaie (which is still turkic but from Cuman language).

@@AdaYavuz2002 no surprise when Crimean Tatars live for 700 years side by side with Ukrainians. Plus parts of West-Ukraine were part of Ottoman Empire aswell the region at the Black Coast.

There are words from Turkish language that were used in the former Ottoman Empire so there are many similar words in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia etc.

In Syrian dialect, we use some of these words as well, but pronounced a little bit different:
- Sharshaf = bed sheet
- Jizma = boots
- Jaorab (formal Arabic) = sock
- Sobia = heater (we use it in the context of fireplace)
- Khartum (formal Arabic) = hose
- Kibrit (also used in formal Arabic) = match
- Pirdayieh = curtain
In fact, i find it strange a little bit, because Turkish and Romanian and Arabic are from three unrelated different languages families, yet all these words are common

Very interesting that Turkish is similar to Romanian. Also, I actually use Turkish as my L2, along with Welsh! At one point, I got interested into Cyprus and I noticed they had 2 languages, Greek and Turkish. But I actually decided to pick Turkish, due to it's easy Latinised alphabets. And so far... Turkish is my most favourite L2 so far. I enjoyed learning it on Duolingo. So good that I barely learn European languages properly now, since I'm used to a non-European language named Turkish. But a bit odd that European languages are starting to get hard for me to learn now, even though I'm European myself. But great video Bahador!! Greetings from England! :)
It's not similar at all (less than 2% mutual intelligibility). 2000 common words out of 120000 words in the Romanian vocabulary (not including derivations) is merely nothing. In common speech we don't understand each other at all, and that's not even taking into account the accent difference.

Ahh I see!! I told my Romanian friend that Romanian was that the Turkish language was one of the recognised languages in Romania and he didn't knew that. So I guess you are right at this point, since Turkish isn't that popular in Romania. Just a quick note. :)
You made me lough, as I speak Romanian and I've once watched some videos about some Turkic food recipes, and the only word I understood is "ciorba" (soup) and it was about the spoon used (table spoon) (but I didn't understand the word for spoon). There are some common words, but less than latin words in English. I understand many words in European languages, but nothing about Asian, including middle eastern. The easiest for me are Romance languages and Germanic languages, much less than Romance. The worst for me are slavic languages. I wish I understood more...

For example Mongolian and Turkic languages are both Altaic languages, and Tatar is from Turkic language family, it is from altaic, but not Mongolian, and Mongolian is altaic but not > Turkic. This is saying something like Mongolian is a Turkic language just because Turkic languages and Mongolian are both from Altaic language family.

Yes! I was waiting for this video. I'm a romanian speaker from Moldova. Even without checking the origin of the words, I can tell a lot of turkish words used in our language, because it's easy for us to understand if these words came from latin, turkish, or slavic.
Also, we've got a lot of turkish words used only in some parts of Moldova and Romania. For example: iorgan (which means blanket).
Yes it is "yorgan" in Turkish, greetings to friendly Moldovan people.

Be carefull which words, a word which is in bouth languages may not have same sense, might have the oposite sense sometime (spre exemplu halal în română "halal de el ","hal de hal ",pilaf are și valoare de adjectiv "ăsta e pilaf, varză ")

Bulgaria is named after a distinct Turkic tribe but the Ottoman influence is probably what's most important.
@Kevin Yes old bulgarians were turkic tribe but they are slavized in present day. Turkic tribes seperated to 4 tribes in it. These are "Oghur-Oghuz-Kıpçak-Karluk"
Bulgarians, Chuvash, Khazars belong to Oghur class. Anatolia Turks, Azerbaijani Turkish, Turkmens and Gagauzians belong to Oghuz class. Kazakhs, Kyrgiz, Tatars belong to Kypcak class. Özbeks and Uygurs belong to Karluk class.
Present day there is not so much Oghur tribe left. They are assimilated.

Turkish is an Eurasian language. Its the native language of East Thrace, Gagauzia, North Cyprus and Crimea which are in Europe. I don't get what you mean.

Amazing! many words we use them in Arabic too, specifically Syrian dialect like Sharshaf, Khurtoom, Jezma, Soba, Kibreet, Jarab, and berdaieh. Some of them might be different in other dialects.

The English word for soba is woodstove. I grew up with them in my house as a kid so I'm well acquainted with the word. Outside would be freezing cold while the interior would be like a sauna if you were in the same room as the woodstove.
It may be one of the best feelings in the world. The outside is freezing and it is snowing but inside is hot and you drink some tea or coffee.

OMG most of the words are in Macedonian absolutely the same, they are actually Turkish remain words since time of the Ottoman empire. I am currently in Turkey and learning the Turkish language, and didn't know that "kibrit "and "tavan" were actually Turkish words. Now I have learned. Gosh, what even amazes me more is that those same words are in use in the Romanian language. I knew that Romania was under Ottoman empire, but I didn't expect them to use these words, also because Romanian language belongs to the Romanian group of languages, so it's related to the Italian language for example, and I can totally recognize a lot of Romanian words since I have studied Italian language and literature. It is amazing how cultures and languages work. I am so happy to see this video.
Most of these words Albanians use too, depending on which region. But honestly, I’m so amazed by this and the Turkish/Albanian video. I love it

I watched a Turkish drama and I found some words that we have in common. "Haide" - come on or hurry up( if it's used twice)
"Geanta"- purse. I know in Turkish the spelling is different but I don't know how.
And also when we are dissapointed we say " vai, vai, vai". We also say this instead of telling someone " omg you are stupid"😂. I was actually wondering why only Romanians say "vai vai vai" out of all latin countries.

I was really surprised because the first word "blanket" is used in many areas in the Arabian Peninsula and pronounced "shar-shaf". The second word "hortum" is definitely Arabic, but the fist sound is "kh" and this word also means long nose like that of elephants. The third word is also Arabic, and also the fourth one! (but I think this 4th word is of Turkish origin.)
This is really amazing. Also the 5th word "masa" is used there, but it's originally not Arabic. The 6th word is also Arabic in origin. The 7th and the 8th and the 9th. Wow!

For the word leğen, in fact in local dialects we use either ileğen or better ilgen and ilenger in Turkey. And leğen with small holes on the bottom, like a colander but pretty larger one, is called iliştir or we call it kevgir for the smaller :)
