My daughter is travelling later in the year to the US. What size suit case would you recommend. Flying from Australia.
@@donnajohansson4105 Hi Donna. What a great opportunity! First you will need to google your airline's size requirements for carry-on or checked luggage. Australia has been super small it seems.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Definitely strict weight restrictions for cabin bags.
Bonus use of a packing cube -- makes a great pillow if you get stranded in an airport.
Brilliant!
I label my bags with a sharpie. I also use index cards to let me know what is in each compression cube, pouch etc! I have them numbered. For example, cube #1 navy pants, white blouse, navy sweater, socks, underwear! Each cube has a complete outfit!
Yes, great tips especially if changing hotels nightly. Thank you for watching!
Good idea, I do the same thing with colour pallettes. One cube will have my black gauzy dress pants and all the tops that go with it, another has my navy around-town pants and the tops that go with it. Hiking clothes are packed separately in the cross body sling bag I take on walks/hikes.
@@jenharvey3397 Great minds think alike!
Great ideas!
Tiny addition to the bar shampoo hack. You can also get a bar conditioner, instead of bringing 2 bars, I cut them both in half and put them in the same container. Bars last so long, there isn't a reason to bring a whole bar of either
Packing socks inside of socks… brilliant! Love that idea, especially how it molds into the corners of the suitcase!
After 20 years that packing hack just came to mind this year lol!
Seen most of ur videos. That was a really good new one that I never thought of before.
I pack my shoes inside a shower cap...either together or separately. Keeps clothing clean😊
My mom taught me to divvy up undergarments and 1 outfit when we traveled together. E.g. some of my undies in her suitcase and some of hers in mine. Likelihood of airline losing the luggage for BOTH parties was low. You at least had a change of undies and 1 outfit to tide you over.
XL 2 gallon ziploc bags, or any size. Insert clothing items in a ziploc, place the bag flat on a chair seat (I use a blanket chest) with the opening to one side, sit on the bag to remove the air then press the seal or slider. The bags remain flat, they dont catch on items in your bag, contents are visible, clothing doesn't wrinkle any more than it would in compression sac. Flatten the ziploc as much as you want, pancake flat or leave some air in the bag.
I organized my pouches by category (Thank you Laurie for that tip) then I made a master list of what was in each pouch. I took a photo of the master list as well as had a print out of the list. I printed an extra list reduced it in size and cut up into each category which I put in the appropriate pouch. I can look over the master list to find that one thing I need.
Great plan for organized packing Sue! Thanks for sharing.
In that compression cube where you have a few undies and shirts, make sure you have a non bulky swimsuit and light coverup (can double as a nightie). In case you are going to a beach / pool destination, you don't want to miss out if your luggage is lost, especially if you are a hard to fit size and may not be able to find a suit in their shoppe quickly.
I always carry on a swimsuit!
I liked the socks stuffed in a sock idea. I also, then, put the sock pouch in a shoe😊
Yes, did you see mine in the sandal? Thanks Anna. Are you flying soon?
Great tips Laurie. I’m going to try that next time we fly
I'm your biggest fan, Laurie! I followed your advice, got compression cubes and a Legend8 carryon and travel everywhere carryon only and Iove the freedom! Plus, today you taught me a new trick - NOT to put the shoes into the corners! Thanks so much!
Excellent ideas as always, Laurie! Thank you!
Hi Annette!
Hello Laurie!
Nice Sunday!!!
I have the smallest suitcase of 4 of us in Israel for 2 weeks. Tripped bags for daughter and me - the best!!!! Tried pouching my toiletries this time-oral, hair, meds. Just moved my shoes. So helpful, Laurie. Thx.
Best hack I’ve seen so far is instead of using packing cubes use thin fabric totes or packable backpacks instead. I used a packable backpack and an Aloha brand tote and it served to separate the clothes in the suitcase and then I had the extra light backpack and tote to use throughout the vacation. When returning home I’m not as stressed about checking in my luggage so I just checked it in but then had the extra bags to use for an additional carry on or personal item to carry souvenirs or extra clothing I bought.
Also never bring a nightgown. Bring an extra bathing suit coverup you can use as both.
Great tips for packing!
I started packing extremely light On the clothing, especially when traveling to other countries. This way I will buy clothing there to blend in and not look like a tourist and the clothes I buy there are my souvenirs. I don't care that I'm wearing the same outfits over and over again because I'm the only one who sees them. I bring paper laundry soap and hand wash anything I need to. This saves so much room in my suitcase for extra purchases. Instead of packing cubes I'll use clear plastic bags. They don't take up as much room and I can see what's in them. I'll be going to Norway in Dec and packing snow boots. Your video gave me another idea. I'll stuff the inside of the boots with socks, undergarments and anything else I can squeeze in there to save room. Love your videos and packing tips!
@@s.p642 Such smart packing tips Suzanne!
Bring 2 coverups? If only one, wouldn't it smell like seawater, have sand on it, & be uncomfortable sleep in?
@@eugeniastravels8954 yes that’s why I bring 2 and usually rinse and dry one out. Point is to bring items that can serve 2 purposes if possible. You can also bring a large scarf that works as a beach wrap too.
Sox in sox. "think outside the box" is like a Dr Suess book. Love these tips Laurie. Say hello to Aullie from Nanna Wanda (fingers crossed for Italy this fall & I will pack a clear garbage bag to put over my luggage when on the hydrofoil ) And I vote for pouches ~
Oh, the places we will go!
I'm starting to think ahead to my summer travel, and I'll be using these tips when I'm ready to pack.
I’m so excited you’ll get to pack again soon!
Great tips as always Laurie! I have purchased a couple of expensive shoe bags from Eagle Creek, and never ended up using them. Instead, I always end up using my cheapo 'dust cover' style drawstring single shoe bags - that way shoes can tuck in wherever there is space, and socks are always packed inside shoes (I swear by Tilley travel socks, they are costly but they last a long time if you only use them for travel, and they are guaranteed to dry overnight if you wash them in the hotel sink and then roll in a towel before hanging to dry.) I only pack solid bottoms, then I can match patterned tops with them all. Instead of using the dry cleaning bag for wet swimsuits, I pack my swimsuit in a dry bag. I use that dry bag (or a Scrubba wash bag) to hand wash clothing throughout my trip, and it's great for packing anything damp to go back home. One of the things that has made the most difference - thanks to you for teaching me this! - is to stop using my hanging everything-hygiene-makeup-and-first-aid-related L L Bean organizer (although it's great and I still use it for road travel when luggage is not restricted) and use small pouches for my toiletries and first aid and emergency supplies instead. Since I have become a serious Vera Bradley addict (especially since I have acquired a friend who works there and she lets me use her staff discount!), it is always easy to find plenty of fun pouches that will fit into the weirdest shaped corners of space. I normally do pack my shoes in the corners, so thank you for this new tip you taught me today! The idea about using ziplocs is a good one, here is an alternative: I always keep a "travel kitchen" in a Stasher bag in my personal item. This has a collapsible Sea to Summit travel mug, a collapsible lidded mug, an electric immersion coil to boil water in hotel rooms, collapsible knife, fork, spoon, and chopsticks, a cut down pack towel to use as a napkin and to wash dishes, and a small military can opener. I use the Stasher bag throughout my vaycay to bring leftovers back to the hotel room (it can keep them fresh in the fridge, and can also be put in the microwave or a pan of boiling water to reheat), good for food prep or marinating, pack a picnic sandwich or snacks for the day, and can also be used as a heat pad or ice pack in case of injury or sore muscles.
Thanks again Jen for your tried and true tips for packing. It sounds like so many essentials, but each trip is different.
I’m cheap, so I use plastic produce bags from the grocery store for my shoes, either individually or as a pair. I can’t see me buying shoe bags when Publix offers them for free! 😊
@@lynnbrady4193 Yes I mention that in my 38 Travel Hacks video...and the free newspaper bag.
How do u use it as a heating pad?
@@ElizabethWoolf-vt5xc Heating pad - fill with very hot water. Ice pack: fill with ice cubes. The closures on Stasher bags are very secure.
Love your “Packing Hack”tips. I never travel now without compression cubes. I also attach a recipe card on each with brief note of contents. Then I take a photo. I do use air tags now but the photo is a back up reminder if the luggage is delayed etc. I also photo any documents and instructions I may need to check on without having to go into my file. Better to be safe than sorry. Happy travels
Thanks for sharing your tips Ann!
Great tips, Laurie! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Great to see you!
I have been watching your videos for about a year. They are wonderful! My husband and I are doing a river cruise in Europe and I told him I would pack in a carry on! He was shocked! He has been traveling to Europe and China for business in a carry on for years. Thanks to your videos I think I can do this!!
Yay! You will impress him! Do not miss this video: bit.ly/NotForget2Pack4RiverCruise
I love the tip to pack essentials in a cube placed in the bottom of my personal item backpack. On a two day road trip, it is where I pack what I need for the next day.
Ooh that is a smart packing tip for a road trip. Where are you headed this year?
That is a great idea! I do not live close to an airport (as in, I'm about 6 hours' drive from the nearest one!), so I always book an airport hotel for the night before my trip, which also gives me parking for the duration of my trip and a shuttle to the airport the morning of my flight. I have a separate packing cube that just has the stuff I need for my hotel stay, so I don't end up undoing my great packing job for my trip and scurrying to repack everything the morning of my flight.
Just bought Level8 20” carry-on and I love the weight… I actually bought the 22” and it was too heavy and had to return it but the new 20” is light enough for my weak 67 y/o arms to lift into the the overhead bin… I also got it on sale from a Amazon lightning deal last week for $24.00🎉 off… love your great tips… I’m going on a cruise in Greece in Oct.🎉
Yay, what a deal!
I've learned so many wonderful tips on your channel and I pass them on to my fellow travelers and have recommended your channel for them to watch.
Oh Janice, thank you!
Thanks Laurie for the tips. U r awesome
Thanks so much for watching these hacks and tips.
I plan on packing carry on for my trip next month 👍🏾 Excited for the new tips
Oh yay! You know I LOVE this pink one, right? Hope y'all have a great flight and that carry-on is doable for you.
You can do it!!
I always pack a plastic zip lock bag with the things I may need during a flight. I pop it into the chair pocket in front of me. Saves trying to get things out of a bag under the seat.
Yes, an amenities kit kind of. Great tip!
I think I might use that next time (leaving 2 weeks from today) - it's annoying to have to always pull my backpack out whenever I want to put something away or take it out, and that trick would work even if I was sitting in bulkhead, since there are pockets on the wall. My only challenge will be remembering to take it back out and put the stuff back in my backpack at the end of the flight.
I’ve been using the eBag classic pack-it-flat toiletry bag for a decade. I like how compact it is, and how easily it packs.
I love your videos Laurie, and all your helpful information!! I am traveling to Germany in a few weeks. We will be using public transportation when there, so I really think I need to go carry on so I can manage carrying it all myself. I have never done all carry ons for overseas travel, but because of your helpful videos, I actually think I can do this! Thank you!!
Oh yes you can! Text those wheels and make sure they are sturdy! We also print maps of the train/bus stations prior to a trip.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thank you!!
Terrific hacks!!!
I hope they help you save space in your carry-on this summer!
I pack footwear individually in clear, open top baggies. Not zip style. Thin and easy to see inside. Save them and reuse! Also, I pack them between the suitcase handles.
I love using Amazon bags for shoes too
Great tips, Thanks!
Checking the airline’s baggage WEIGHT requirement is as important as the size requirements. Having a small luggage scale helps. I had to repack my carry-on at check-in when it was weighed by the airline.
Oh, this must be for an international airline. That would be so frustrating.
And if you don't have a luggage scale but do have a regular bathroom one, weigh yourself both with holding your bag and without. Works for checked bags, too, as well as carryon.
I just love you. I’m a cruiser but need to fly also so thanks again for your packing tips and smiles. ❤
Ooh, have you gone on a river cruise?
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie no I like the bigggg ones, big honkin 🛳️ ships, lol Sounds nice tho. We have contemplated but not done.
Hey Laurie, love your videos and you've given us some great tips! Bonus game, me and my wife put bets on how long into the video before you mention being married to a pilot, hours of fun!
Haha when it’s part of my branding, I gotta say it. It helps people trust me.
I wait for when Aullie will make an appearance! I am so in love with that little cutie❤
I pack an outfit in each cube. If I wear a shirt, say on day 1, then again on day 3, I hang up the shirt and have it ready to add to the outfit for day 3.
Yes great plan for travel outfits.
Hi Laurie I found that the silicone salad dressing travel bottles works great for liquids. It's a little smaller. I have not measured the volume. I think it's about 2 oz.
Love that hack!
Don’t pack too much. Pack things you can wash out in the sink or shower with shampoo.
Other than heavier outer layers for cold weather, if it won't hang dry overnight and be dry by morning, it doesn't make it into my suitcase. Dry laundry soap sheets are a permanent component of my travel toiletries kit.
So many great tips Laurie. We leave for our travels in under two weeks. Packing for seven weeks for summer in England and cold weather in Iceland and Norway including dressy clothes for a 23 day cruise is quite challenging 🥺 wish me luck.
Ooh how exciting! This 2 climate packing video may help: bit.ly/SuitcasePack2Climates
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thank you!
Laurie, You are the greatest inspiration for packing and traveling. Thank you!
I have a question. Our daughter is getting married December 28th in Mexico. We are staying at an all inclusive resort. Any ideas on how to pack for 7 days in a carry-on and backpack for the wedding? I appreciate your help!
I always have extra clothing in my personal bag and some snacks as well😃
Shampoo and conditioner in sachets, laundry detergent with softener in sachets are what i usually take with in my trips. Disposable underwear, to give more room for my souvenirs to bring home.
Yes, if I can throw away things before packing, I feel like Wonder Woman packing less for the return flight.
Great tips! It seems that after every vacation, I have a couple of things that were never used. As I unpack, I try to determine why I didn’t use that particular piece. It’s usually an “in case” piece. Traveling light this year means every piece has to have a function. I have to be smart about the planned activities and leave those in case pieces home.
Even after 20 years of packing in a carry-on bag, I too have things that I never used.
I do that, too. I keep my packing lists on my computer (started doing it in 2015), then, if there's anything I brought but didn't use - or that I forgot and ended up needing - I add that to the end of the list and the reason why, so that I have it for reference in the future. If I need to make a separate one for packing on the way back (generally only happens at Christmas, since that's the only time I drive, so the only time I can take a significant additional amount back with me - the rest of the time, I fly), I can just copy-paste and add whatever I need to, instead of having to write up the entire list again. It also allows me to combine lists to get ideas of what to bring for future trips (did that for both of the summer trips I'm taking this year) based on location, activities expected, and time of year.
Love your videos and your hack to pack a toiletries bag flat.
Thanks for sharing yours too.
I'll be watching all of your carry on video material. Just home from Portugal and my sister's suitcase didn't make it from US for two plus days. She wants to pack carry on for our trip to Rome in September.
Oh wow how awful! Yay these packing tips will help her with carryon bags!
Great tips. I have watched all your videos. Greetings from Athens Greece!❤
Good morning! Have a beautiful summer. Hope to visit sometime soon!
I would love to give you all the information you need for a trip in Greece. I am full of tips!❤
I like small pouches to separate my tooth hygiene, hair, and bath stuff, and place them where there are small pockets of space in my suitcase, or I keep the 3 small pouches in a small packing cube if there's room in my case.
I love using pouches sometimes.
I use disposable shower caps for my shoes. They keep my clothes clean and they take up less space than cloth shoe bags. I stuff not only socks but scarves( wrapped in a shower cap), belts, eye glasses what ever will fit inside shoes.
Great video as always Laurie! I always color scheme outfits using 2 colors- black and blue. I then pack shirts that go with both colors. I don't like packing light colors as they have a tendency to show dirt smug, etc... Question- have you ever packed a mini clothes steamer?
I bought one and then realized I could not take it overseas so I returned it and will just hope for an iron. The voltage was too high.
Love your videos. A recent hack I used was to squirt single uses of shampoo/hair styling products into a mini disposable plastic zip close pill pouch I buy at Walmart, 50 ct. it did not leak in my quart sized bag and it saved so much space. I just toss the plastic pouch when I’m done. I’ll be using this hack again and again!
Oh wow!!
AND make sure you buy the strongest Pill Bags!!!! There are different levels.. some are cheap and tear easy… MAKE SURE you get some string ones.. GREAT TIP!!!!
@@Linzi1947 Right! I really like the ones from Walmart. It comes forty or fifty in a pack for around $1.50. Score!
Laurie, your tips are so helpful. I used several of them when doing carry-on only for the first time. I was surprised, however, when boarding a British Airways, a380, in which I was seated upstairs. Because of the shape of the plane, the overhead bins on the window side, are smaller and not as deep, and will not fit a 22 inch carry-on no matter how it’s turned. It was very frustrating, because there is already such a lack of available overhead bins. I was able to find one over the middle section, those are bigger, but as you can imagine, those go really fast. Love your videos, thanks for all your great tips!
Wow in such a new airplane!
I never thought about intentionally packing between the handles in my suitcase. Thank you!
That is a great travel hack.
I am going to try that shaking your luggage a couple times trick to create a little more space. Genius! That will also be a huge help when you pack again to go back home. For some reason your dirty clothes get "bigger" and harder to fit back in your luggage. Haha.
I have forgotten to mention that hack for probably a year now!
I save the ends of my toothpaste tubes, roll them up with a clip to hold and use those when I travel. It’s more than enough for a couple of weeks and let’s me use the toothpaste I prefer rather than what comes in little travel tubes.
Yes and feels so good to toss items at the end of a trip.
My travel hack: I use 15ml airless pump or spray bottles for all of my skincare and haircare items - saves sooooo much space if your a skincare snob like me 😂 15ml will get you about 14 days worth of skincare.
I unzip the suitcase liner and then there is even more space because many times the liner is smaller than the case.
Awesome hack to find more space in your bags! Or to hide something.
I'm surprised about the snow boots fitting in the 20" better than the 22". Can you explain? Was one side of the suitcase deeper? Thanks for your videos!
I used the International sized Travel Pro carry-on for my trip to Australia. It was a smaller carry-on but using creative packing ideas helped save space. One thing I do is look for items that do multiple things. A long knit sweater is also a bathrobe and cover-up. Low heeled plastic black slides are my dress shoes, my casual shoes and my beach/shower shoes. I also try to find the lightest weight item that works to pack. I miss my younger years when I flew down to Florida for a week with just a backpack.
Yes yes, swap out or pack items to do double duty. Thanks!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I hope you do a video on travel items that do double duty!
@@shellykzookzoo5922 That would be great, I hope Laurie takes you up on the suggestion! I definitely do that double-duty items too, including the rubber/plastic slides (are they Crocs 'dress' shoes, by any chance? That's what I use for travel.) In cooler weather I don't pack PJs, I pack thin silky patterned long undies. They take up less room than pajamas and can add an extra layer if the weather is cold. I bring only one lightweight cross body purse for the whole trip, regardless of activity (a Kipling metallic 'Alvar' flat zip is my bag of choice - it has 5 zippered pockets, carries a lot relative to its tiny footprint (I call it my Tardis bag!), and the fabric is rugged enough to stand up to anything, while the metallic finish gives it some class. If I'm going to be doing some long walks/hikes, I also pack a very small sling bag (one of my smaller reactive (waterproof) Vera Bradley slings). Instead of just letting them take up room in my case, I use them as packing cubes. My hiking outfit goes in the sling bag, along with a small first aid and foot care kit, and jewelry and small accessories such as scarves go in my zippered purse.
@@jenharvey3397 My black slides are OOFOS Recovery slides. I can walk anywhere in them, they weigh almost nothing and in the evening they are my slippers. They look dressy with a skirt and casual with jeans or shorts. Classic black goes with almost anything. Also they work great for my plantar fasciitis!
@@shellykzookzoo5922 That's good to know, plantar fasciitis is the bane of my existence and really gets in the way of enjoying life! Thank you for the suggestion.
Have you ever had any of the Away suitcases? If so, how do they compare to the Level8 suitcases? Thanks!
Hi I have not! I was right next to one. Seems great! I now have two of the level8 because of their quality, space and rugged wheels for international travel.
Thanks for another helpful video! Beach travel hacks: My personal bag on the airplane is a cooler backpack. We stay at a hotel, so I bring empty Ziploc bags to put ice from the hotel ice machine in for the beach and then we go buy a case of beer for the week at a store. When I’m on the beach and those bags of ice melt, then I pour them into my water bottle. I also wear my bathing suit under my clothes for the flight so that when I get there all I have to do is change my outer clothes before leaving the airport. If I have packed efficiently, my backpack will fit my tennis shoes so I can wear my flip-flops on the plane. I keep the clothes that I’m going to change into at my destination airport on the outside pocket of my suitcase and when I return, I will put my wet bathing suit in a Ziploc bag on the outside in that pocket. :)
Yes, did you see where I packed my shorts to change into in the airport? Love your hacks. Double duty bags!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie that got me thinking of what do I do? :) Keep the great videos coming! I watch them before every trip :)
Hi Laurie, Came across your RUclips Channel by accident. Love it! You have such great info, and seem like you are truly a fun & down to earth person. We are going overseas this summer for the first time and are very excited. Plan is to go strictly carry on. We will be flying Premium Economy (bigger seats & fewer in it’s own cabin area behind Business Class), never flown any thing but regular economy before, so a tad concerned about personal item and space under seat due to these seats having a fold down foot rest, any recommendations on how to maximize the size of our personal item in this situation … not sure anything too rigid will fit. Thanks.
Hi, and welcome! So you will have room because the bags go in front of you under the seat if I am understanding you correctly.
Just got back from an ABC Islands cruise and your tips made going through the airport a breeze.
I am so happy for y’all.
Hi Laurie! I love your Level 8 pink suitcase. Is that light exterior holding up well?
Hi, I love it! Because it is textured, I think that helps. And it has bumpers. But I have noticed dog hairs stick to it lol.
I line up single shoes between those bars inside the suitcase (the handle mechanism).
Smart tip for packing shoes-I think I mentioned this one in the video.
I’ve watched dozens of your videos in prep for today’s trip. No where did I see or hear anything about documenting MY DRIVERS LICENSE on my phone. Somewhere between security and boarding I dropped my license. Discovered it missing after the plane was backing out. First layover was spent contacting every lost and found at DFW airport! They found it but in their confirmation query they requested I give them the license number and date of issue! Nope I didn’t have that listed under my personal contact info, but I will as soon as I get the thing back!!! I’ll also do some kind of backup photo on my phone or a printed copy, just in case….I know it’s not a great idea with IS theft, but gotta do something!
Oh my goodness! Great tip! If you go to the Notes section of your phone and press down, you'll see a camera pop up. You can take a pic and it will be right there or you can insert text. Ugh so frustrated for you!
Hi Lauri. First time commenting. First time watching to prepare for travel. Grateful for all your tips. For health reasons and convenience, my goal is a personal item only but I really need wheels. Would you be able to suggest a line of luggage for me to look at? My current Travel Pro is small but with the wheels, it is 19". UA's height limit for under the seat is 17. TIA
Hi, this has fit under 2 different airplane seats: amzn.to/3GrE2Rk and I have the blue quilted one. I talk about it in this video: bit.ly/PackingHacksUnderseatBag
I too have used a sharpie pen to label suitcases. Compression cubes to pack entire outfit in personal bag just in case luggage gets lost.
Yes, one version of my Tripped cubes has cards...maybe it's their old version.
Hello fellow Houstonian!!! New subscriber here!!!
Thanks so much!! Have a lovely day.
Laurie thanks a lot for your tips. I have questions - how much do your luggage weigh together? It seems you are packing a lot and I think it should only be between 6-8 kg? The backpack also looks very heavy.😮 sorry for my bad English (I am German)
We just got back from our trip. Did carryon. But, even though we upgraded our seats, we were still group 4 and by time we loaded all overhead was full and had to check bags. I’m so disgusted with flying. Pay more, but get less. Very helpful video. We pack similar.
It can be so frustrating especially in the summer.
To Pack between the handles you could actually unzip the lining and place inside the lining to fill in those crevices..
True-great tip!
Leaving 2 weeks from tomorrow for a 2-week trip - only bringing my backpack because everything I need that won't be at my destination easily fits into it (I keep an extra set of medical equipment, full set of full size toiletries, and a small amount of clothing at my parents' house, so all I really need, other than wallet, keys, etc., is my computer, things to do while traveling, a skirt for church, the replacement brake parts for my wheelchair (in case they take forever to get the part to me - that way, they still have to send me the part but I won't be stuck without a working brake), a couple snacks, some electrolyte mix, and the very few things I would need if I got stuck overnight on a layover (it has happened before so it could always happen again)); if I need more clothes than that (like a raincoat), I'll just borrow from my mom. Currently trying to decide whether to bring sneakers as well, in addition to sandals (which work for everything from hosing down the driveway to attending a wedding), or just the sandals - if I brought the sneakers, I'd wear those on the plane and pack the sandals (I have drawstring bags that each fit one sandal perfectly - my wool dryer balls came in them), since the sandals take up far less room, but I don't plan to do a ton of walking or sightseeing, so, theoretically, the sandals should be plenty; I've gotten away with just sandals for that same reason on my previous 2 summer trips, so I'm leaning toward it for this time, too.
I've been working on my packing list for this trip for literally months (since mid-February) - I keep my packing lists on my computer, so I basically combined a bunch of them so that I would have all the ideas in one place, then whittled it down to what I was actually going to need. The one for camp in July is a lot more extensive, though, because it has to be - I've been working on that one since February as well, and I'm eternally grateful that I have (I will be bringing a suitcase for that trip, probably my 19", but, with me having to pack my bugle in my suitcase, it might have to be my 22" (okay, so it's technically 22.5"x14.75"x9.75" overall dimensions, but that's close enough that it will still fit just fine in the overhead of a regular (non-regional) United jet as long as I don't stuff it past its "empty dimensions") - if I do use my 22", I'll have to figure out a different luggage strap, because the one I have barely fits my 19" (that one's something like 19"x12.5"x7.5" - the wheels aren't embedded at all, so I don't include their additional height because my luggage strap doesn't have to go around the wheels; that suitcase has taken such a beating, it's almost impossible to believe that it hasn't worn out yet)).
I hope you have a great summer camp trip and a wonderful backpack trip 🎶
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Thanks! Haven't been able to make it to camp in 5 years, so I'm extra excited; I'll be one of the girls counselors, but I don't know yet what grade I'll be with - all I know is that it'll be either 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th. For next month, definitely leaning toward only the sandals, and I will be bringing both wheelie bars this time, since I only brought one last month, but the backpack was heavy enough that one wheelie bar still wasn't enough to keep the chair from flipping backwards when I got out of it (since there wasn't a suitcase on the front to balance it out) - two should definitely be enough.

I am 69 and just got back from 8 days in FL. I did it with a carry on and personal item. My go to suitcase is an IT World's Lightest suitcase that I can lift with one finger. I travel with lightweight clothing, wrap skirts, lightweight slacks and shorts, silk or synthetic tops. It is all about the the weight for me. I put the heavy stuff such as my computer, electronics, etc that I have to get out anyway in my personal item that I have to get out anyway under my seat. Even though the handle is broader than most suitcases, I use a bag that fits over the handles. I do have some medical stuff that would not do well in baggage hold and I would not check this lightweight bag. Also, if I ever check a bag, I put FRAGILE stickers all over the bag and it has not gotten crushed. I brought two bottles of Vodka back from Russia unbroken in 2019 which inside my checked luggage this way.
I love the Onesole interchangeable shoes that you can change the tops on. I have several bottoms and about 50 tops. They were featured on Shark Tank years ago. I have plain, sequins, sling, Army, my college, my dog breed, etc, etc. I love them and they are SO comfortable. I can dress those shoes up or down by just exchanging the tops and the tops lay flat. I also love Rip Skirts that are made out of bathing suit material that go from a cover up to dinner depending on your blouse and accessories. They also fold totally flat.
I love my Ripskirt! Thanks for sharing all the examples too!
I just ordered my Lovevook personal backpack. So excited!
If you do not love it, return it. But I love both of mine!!
I have a 22 inch carry-on that needs replacing. I am concerned that the Level 8 20" will have much less packing space. I only wear dresses or jumpers with t-shirts. My travel days are usually 7 total. I just pack 1 pair dress shoes, if that. Just clothes and a curling iron. Everything else goes into the under seat bag. Given this do you think the the Level 8 work? Thanks so much for all your video lessons. I really appreciated the one on hearing aids.
I tell ya, it took me forever to even try a 20" and a spinner b/c I loved my 22". But like I said near the end of the video, I could fit more shoes in my 20" Level8 for our Canada trip last Fall.
My travel hack is consider a 30-ish L backpack instead of a rolling suitcase if you are going somewhere with uneven streets, hotels you will have to walk up several flights of stairs to your room as if there IS an elevator, it will be super small and scary (Greece when we went!)
Ooh great way of thinking! I love being hands free.
My carry on sized "suitcase" is by High Sierra and it has wheels and a compartment in the back that houses straps to make it into a backpack. It also has a small backpack that zips to the front which, after walking through the airport, becomes my personal item. It is a pretty nifty set up. I tried to find one like it to link, but it seems they no longer make the two pieces that zip together.
@@caroleanne8529 Mountain Equipment Co-op, a Canadian company, still makes the maximum carry on size travel backpack with the zip off day pack.
Laurie, what tracking device would you recommend for a Samsung 22. I won't need one for my child 😅; she's 29. We have a cruise to Eorope in late summer. Thank you very much.
Ha! She may want one for you. I would research them b/c I only have apple.
💜💐🐕💐💜 TFS!😊
Overheard bins vary by inches. Its so difficult to find that ONE carry on the works for all
So true! Did you happen to watch this video about larger bins: bit.ly/2023TravelUpdatesMustKnow It is near the end.
I pack items underneath the zippered fabric in my carry-on suitcase to make it level with the extension rods. Items are secured by the rods in the 3 sections and then after re-zipping, it seems like I have less unused air space when done fully packed. Only put items under the fabric that TSA will not want to double check!!!
Those are great travel hacks! That fabric is so loose
Your tan sandals are so cute. What brand are they?
Hi here they are: bit.ly/3XtP4N4
I’m about to do a week in our “Laurie’s fav backpack” 🎒 lovevook ❤ I see those all over airports!!!! We need stickers or patches or keychain merch to ident each other when traveling 😊😉
Awww you're so sweet! I just feel like people would not want my channel name on a keychain. Any creative ideas?
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie hmmm maybe a contest? Amazon gift card for winner of best idea??? 🤔
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie If you offered a sticker with your channel's logo, I'd get one for my water bottle. Not a big money-maker, but it would be good for marketing. :)
@@marlamiyashiro1356 Oh thanks!
Unzip lining inside suitcase and fit shoes in and around wall/frame of luggage. Makes a nice barrier between shoes and clothing. No need for shoe bag.
Love that packing strategy!
Love your videos. Please put your adorable dog on your videos.
Thank you! Will do!
Can you possibly clarify the new way to put your carryon in the overhead? Between the diagram and the way yours was shown, I am confused.
Hi and sure! It would stand up on the long side rather than sliding in horizontally.
Hi Laurie..
I'm counting the days down before I leave on my dream vacation which is going to Cape Town, South Africa. I have 2 layovers both ways. On the way down, my layovers are 3 hours and I think I should care my carry on and personal bag with. The question I have for you is on the return trip, I have an hour and a half layover, should I check that carry on at the airport when leaving Cape Town? Thanks!!
How exciting! If it gives you more peace of mind, check it!
Way easier not hauling it.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
If people can’t remember, what’s in there packing cubes, it’s very easy to label them. That’s what I do for my clothing cubes.
Laurie, I love your tips and channel. In March you said you will put a packing list but I can't find it!!! Help please I'm flying to Europe soon and taking the only a carry on challenge (I'm an over packer). Thank you very much!!
Husband and I have been carry on only for years. We normally do not dress up too much when we go to Europe (no dress or fancy shoes for me). I take 4 short sleeved T-shirts, 1 long sleeved shirt, two slacks (1 jeans), underwear and socks for the time I'll be gone, pajamas and a toiletry bag. I wear the bulkiest pair of shoes and take one other pair. I usually wear a sweater or jacket on the plane. There's always room for a fancy scarf and a pair or two of shorts. We don't take swimsuits, because we are busy sight seeing. Make sure everything is color coordinated and you're good to go. Have fun!
Thank you very much Carole! Will follow your list. 😊
I know! We are having so much trouble getting the blog started. Maybe by mid-June! I apologize!
Great list!
My problem is packing my shoes/ boots, i have big feet ( European size 44) not much space left in a carry-on after my shoes/ boots are packed.
That could be true. One tip is to wear your heaviest, bulkiest shoes in the airplane.
Laurie, what does this bag weigh fully loaded as in Australia we can only take on board as carry on - 7kg or 15.43lbs, which is not that much really and is very easy to overload. We are often weighed once thru and waiting to board. I got caught once with 10kg in a very small roll on - $60Aus later…….. Now I carry scales. It is often cheaper to send back any excess by post within Australia. 5kg = $20.
Hi, we do not have to worry about weight here so I do not know what the bag weighed.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie - Gosh, you are so lucky.
Invest in Merino wool clothing, socks, and underwear to save on weight and space (for souvenirs)as you can reuse them multiple times without washing for a time and you can mix and match
Instead of bringing full size bottles of tylenol , immodium etc.
I buy the blister packs, it cost more, but takes up much less room, and I only need a few.
I love those now but have not used them enough.
I was thinking that the socks in a sock could also fit inside of a shoe or sandal. Also, a question. I am using a cane now for walking any distance because of a bad knee. Is it any problem to put that up in the overhead without it counting as my carryon? Thanks so much!
I used a cane at one time and they had me check it with the stewards once I sat. But once I flew, and some had their pair of crutches put in the overhead. What a pain for so many of us trying to put our bags up there!
@@KimberlyLetsGo thank you!
Hi in the US it can easily be stowed in the overhead bins like crutches would be.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thank you!
Laurie at one point you had on a pair of light blue sneakers. Will you share the brand? At the 3 51 mark
Hi, here they are: bit.ly/3Aul8G0 but they are black, gray and white.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Thank you! Love them
What is the backpack that you show in some of the photos?
Hi Tanya; all links should be in the first comment or in the paragraph right above the shirts I designed for the channel. Tap on the Show More or Read More below every video: amzn.to/44wzOSX
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I have found both paragraphs but neither one has pictures of your t-shirts.
@@MaCookie7 Thanks for letting me know.
Laurie I have a quick question for you. We are down to the wire now on our trip to Abu Dhabi. The date was pushed to next week. My son wants me to cook every once in a while and has asked me to bring my seasonings. May I bring them tightly closed on a ziplock ? Some will be unopened.
Hi, I just do not know their rules. I would think they would be allowed though.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thanks Laurie. I just wanted your take on the situation. I didn’t think there would truly be a problem. I have been researching and finding nothing. Only something containing poppy seeds would be troublesome considering they make you test positive for opiates.
@@silky0439 Yes you should be fine especially since they like spices over there too.
I hope it’s ok to ask here but haven’t flown for years and have been watching lots of your videos👍. Getting a bit stressed Regarding luggage. If you have a checked suitcase can you also have a hand luggage suitcase and a personal item bag. We are going to Canada and a Alaska cruise on the end but have a small checked luggage allowance so trying to make the most we can. Thanks your videos are so helpful
Hi Pam. You will need to google your airline and carry-on bag requirements. You will see that airline's rules for sizes and/or weight.
