I have been raising my blinds like this for years. The one thing that I do a bit different is that on the end of the jib pole where the strap or rope runs across is that I will nail some short 2 X 4s on the sides to keep the strap from slipping off of the pole. I also nail two "outrigger" 2 X 4s on the bottom side of the legs and have them extended about six feet past the legs pointed TOWARDS the two vehicle. These outriggers act as a STOP to keep the blind from tipping to far into the PULL direction.
Yes longer the better, but it must be taller than the stand while laying down or else you get no lift and lots of drag. Its just 2 vectors if done properly.
