I loved your laughter at experiencing the launch control 🤘🏿🔥

I once drove a Tesla Mode S in ludicrous mode. Let me tell you, it is so quick that I felt like I almost felt queasy in my stomach. The Taycan is Way more attractive and is, of course, a Porsche.

I'm not sure you actually engaged launch control. I didn't hear the tone not see the message on the instrument console. Did you press brake hard then accelerator hard and wait 2 sec for the tone then release brake?

During those filmed runs, I mistakenly had suspension in Sport Plus but NOT the dial. Mistake! Later in the day, after all the camera gear was broken down, I discovered that mistake when I did launch properly in Sports Plus. But at that point in the day, the car needed to be returned to the dealership so I couldn't set up the cameras to film it over again. I left the footage I had in the video because the sensory feeling I had and repeatability of launch control I mentioned in my commentary still seemed appropriate. Now that I think about it, I could have put a note/subtitle in video to clarify. Shoot! I am learning!

Well done Joe. Once 'they' are able to duplicate the sound of a gasoline vehicle, that will be the nail in the coffin. Until then, there will be resistance to the conversion as I would assume the 992 911 Turbo S. provides similar accelerative force (See Carfection). Although, the Taycan is a very nice looking car. And the vacillation begins...

The Taycan is really pretty, Porsche lines everywhere. But like you said sound is key to sports cars. Future 911's , M3's and supercars will surely have their EV models have some sort emotional soundtrack to go with them . Maybe hydrogen cars have a lot more emotive sounds to them than EV's.

That's the thing, the Taycan is great but so quiet. Day to day, going to and from work in traffic, perhaps quiet is actually a good thing. But I love to drive and the engine sound is a part of the thrill. On a back country road, I love a gas engine, even though it may not be as blazing fast as an EV.

she's a big gal damn, imagine this next to a 356 or 912, thanks for the review! who was driving the camera car 911? I'll miss the sound of a big ol'e V8.

For those running shots, I drove my 911 as the camera car and asked one of the guys at Porsche Larchmont to drive the Taycan. I was able to drive that Taycan for a whole day so the dealer was really generous in allowing me plenty of time with the car.

It's kind of funny, that especially Americans are talking very often about "crazy fast" driving of such a performance EV like the Porsche Taycan Turbo, although they aren't even allowed driving faster than 70 mph on the roads in their country.
Here in Germany you are allowed to feel and experience the maximum performance of an EV like the Porsche Taycan Turbo each day on the Autobahn and therefore it makes sense driving such a car to its speed limits on German roads. Trying the same in the USA with some forthcoming new and even fatter EVs than the Taycan, with more than 700 hp electric power, I'm not so sure if this makes sense...
I've heard that the forthcoming new Lucid Air EV will get even more than 1000 electric hp... for a big and fat executive sedan! It's getting more and more obscene with luxury EVs, because these cars are crazy heavy and way too fast for roads and infrastructure like in the USA. It makes no sense, driving on US roads with so much power!
113 kWh of electric power in such a Lucid Air simply means, that it will be even heavier than the Porsche Taycan Turbo... This is just crazy!
Teslas constantly talking about new "lap records" in Laguna Seca with a new Model S also is like some totally irrelevant bullshit, because you will never experience its performance on US public roads, and on the race track its even more stupid, when you drive a 2400 kilogram heavy electric beast around a track and killing its tires after just one lap. This is so stupid and has nothing to do with "safe the planet" with more EVs, because of all the waste of resources just for quite useless future performance EVs, which are more than just fucking heavy....These are ultra heavy! All this new electric individual mobility future looks crazy, because ecologically it doesn't make sense at all. Burning synthetic fuels, made with renewable clean energy, with still combustion engine cars in a near future, would make much more sense and would help our climate more than all this battery madness which is ahead of us!

The back seats are not as spacious as a Panamera or a big S-Class or 7 series but I found them surprisingly comfortable. And I am 6ft 3 inch tall.

The Taycan is of course an impressive performance EV, but the price is rather absurd. For my money, I'd prefer to split this much cash between 2 vehicles, a more affordable EV for daily driving and a proper gasoline sports car for enthusiast driving.

You raise an excellent point about the price and getting two very good cars for the price of this Turbo. As tested, this Turbo was a whopping $175,000. There is a Taycan 4S that slots below the Turbo that is priced more competitively to a high spec Tesla Model S. And I understand that the Taycan 4S with the performance battery is plenty fast. But it is still pricey.

Enjoyed your review and the launches! From the owner of a 991.2 Turbo S I obviously appreciate performance. However I think Porsche could have dialed this back a bit in the Taycan, which is a saloon/sedan and not a sports car,and gone for more range . I wonder what this would be realistically in the real world in winter with wipers, headlights, heating etc all active !?
You didn’t mention the width of the sills at all, did you find this a problem getting in and out?

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  4 года назад

Hi Jonathan, I think you made excellent points. I assume Porsche wanted to beat Tesla and offer superior driving dynamics, which is in line with the Porsche brand, and as a result they sacrificed range. You make a good point that such dizzying performance isn't totally necessary for a luxury sedan. I am also curious about winter performance as well. This is after all intended to be a daily driver and not a garage queen. As a daily driver though, this car has more than enough range for daily use, to and from work, errands and a quick blast for fun after work. Most people aren't traveling across a continent everyday. To your question about the sills, the B pillar is very far forward so I have to back in and fall into the driver's seat. That is weird. So ingress and egress around that B pillar isn't the best.
