Hey Mat, where do you price these planter boxes at? I bought this plan a while ago but did have the time to build it until now.
Matt, thank you for your channel, I have a small woodworking side business and have been watching woodworking videos for years. I think your channel is the best. You never pull out a festool domino jointer, you don’t use quarter sawn walnut and there is no C&C machine. You are the common man’s inspiration. You video are always well done and I always learn something or get inspired to build my own version of your projects. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much. I try to build projects that anyone can do with common tools. We must keep this trade alive!
This!
lol so true! festool domino joiner and sawn walnut.. man I feel this!
Just as you said we often talk ourselves out of things we can do....
Knowledge is gold...
But only if it's applied!
Yes 🙌🏻
i started woodworking on accident.i had finished building my addition and had some small 2x4 pieces left over so i built an outdoor chair set.some one saw it and wanted one 4 years later we still have a hard time keeping up with orders.when i start a project i can see the finished project before getting started and i always just get into what im doing until its done.tks for the videos and ideas.i do buy the plans more out of respect for your time.
Nice! Thank you so much for the support.
Built my side hustle wood shop on this exact planter... yours is much simpler than mine (lots of trial and error on my end). Mine has each section boxed in with a floor and lined with landscape fabric so soil can be added direct to the box. My builds are made from thick rough cut sawmill lumber, my customers love the rustic look it gives. Keep up the great work Matt!
I am an amateur woodworker and folks dont be intimidated by these builds. Sure yours might not look as good but you learned. And learning is a huge part of woodworking. Dont be scared of new pieces of equipment, be extra safe and again learn. Use cheap wood and scraps and build stuff using your tools and...Learn. I suffer from PTSD and woodworking is a great way of helping those issues. I started with charcuterie boards and now I'm learning to work on furniture. You don't need a giant shop full of all the goodies. And lastly If you decide that woodworking is something you'll enjoy, save your pennies and get the quality made equipment. Good Karma to you Matt and everyone out there.
Another great project from the Bob Ross of woodworking!! Thanks for all you do.
My pleasure!
Great job. I have been making these same tiered planters for about 3 years and they sell really well.
Nice!
How much do you sell these for? I'm thinking about trying this in my area.
@@billymartin2277 I sold them for $150. It really depends on you and your market. I am sure you can sell them for more if you wanted.
Great stuff, I love how you keep the new material coming and the simplicity of all your projects, I discovered you a couple months before the holidays and I've probably built about 10 or 12 different projects and my situation temporary is not that great, but like you say most can be done with very basic tools, I can attest to that , I only have a drill, circular saw, jigsaw, sander and a cheap router, belt sander, oscillating sander and an ancient miter saw from the 1990's, No planer, band saw, table saw, so if anyone is intimidated by these videos of guys with fully equipped shops and all these fancy tools, don't be, they all had to start someplace, thats why I follow Mathew, he doesn't just teach you how to build something, he also share his journey and how he got to where he's at today, he basically saying, follow me, Do what I do and you'll get what I got, Thank you again brother for all you do 🔨🔨🔨🔨
I make a lot of planters but never tried this design, i'm looking forward to giving it a go. Thanks for the easy to follow guide 👍
You're very welcome!
Another great planter build. It's a nice twist on the usual single planter
Thanks!
Very cool easy planter box!! Another awesome idea Matt!! Everything I build are custom made to order pieces, so I don’t have plans. They pick something they like from Pinterest or wayfair or wherever, give me sizes they need and build it! Been doing it for the last 5 years full time but have been doing it since high school, mid 80’s! I’ve just got to get done with the big builds I have on order and then start doing some of these simple but very easy sellers. Love them! Keep them coming, enjoy your videos.
Pocket holes are the bomb.
Love it. I’m thinking of three different, but different, marketing angles - 1-obviously flowers: 2-vegetable (tomatoes, etc: 3-herb garden.
I built it using the plans. Holy smokes I won’t be trying it again. It’s a ton of work. Mainly the cutting is the longest most time consuming part. I’d wait to cut the bottom pieces until you’re done. Mine were too short.
I'm a pretty decent woodworker, and I did exactly what you said. I saw the finished product and said to myself I wouldn't make this. But after you explained the structure, I am now totally on board. I think I'll make this for my church bazaar in a couple months.
Thanks for the video!
Nice! You can do it!!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworkinghere's an update... I customized one and donated it to the local PTO. They're going to raffle it off in a month. And I sent those photos to one of our largest craft fairs put on by the city. They accepted my application and I'll be in booth #2 at the very entrance of the event! I rented a 20x10 space and will have all kinds of outdoor stuff set up as a lounge. Adirondack chairs. Picnic tables. Many styles of your planters. It's going to be an amazing event.
Thanks for everything you do for this community. :)
Well, I think I have to build this now.
Tomorrow I am using as my very first build day. Finally some decent weather. Bought a new mitre and planer and ready to get started. I have stocked up on materials and this just made the list of things to try. Can’t wait! First time building in 20 years! Hoping one day to turn it into my full time gig as my skills progress and I get better at building everything. Thanks again for your videos. I have binged and enjoyed each one. They will help facilitate making some money to buy new tools for sure.
Great to hear you are going to start on this journey. You’ve got this!! Thank you for watching and the support.
Simple and beautiful. How did you enclose the bottom? What finish stain did you use?
You don't finish the bottom. You just place the flower pots in each cavity.
@@michaelheyward7668 But how are the flower pots supported? Seems like a series of various sized blocks or stands are needed to complete the project. Those stand heights are also unknown until the buyer procures the potted plants. Empty coffee cans and scrap wood to make stands?
Ken, since flower pots vary in size, bricks, scrap wood, etc would be necessary for shorter pots if being placed in the taller cavities.
Just like all your projects, this will be on my local fb marketplace in 3 days. You have a couple hard-core subs around here.
Lol awesome!
How do you get the plants to “show”? Do you insert something for them to sit on?
Had the same question. Please let me know. Thx
For the fake plants we have staged, yes… there are some box for fillers under the plants… however if dealing with real plants use potted plants or tack in some landscaping fabric
Love the planters! Thanks for the very informative video!!
You are so welcome!
Another great build and video - your fence pickets look far nicer than anything I can find locally. I can't wait to give it a go!!
thank you
You're welcome!
Very nice, Matthew. Such a great build. Thank you for sharing it.
This is probably a dumb question but what holds the plant base up so it stays flush with the top of the planter?
I only got a quick glimpse and had to rewind a few times. It's hard to catch, but the fake plants were sitting in tubs. When I made some planters, I put on the inside a couple of boards to lay a platform down if needed. Hope this helps.
Matthew, you are so amazing! I subscribed last year, but never seem to get updates. (Your not the only channel this has happened with.) So bummed. What simple projects do you recommend for someone to build in a small apartment, with limited tools (basic hand tools, sander, drill, and "toy" band saw) to get started? And do you have any suggestions for any woodshop time sharing? Is there even such a thing? Thanks for all you do!
I don't think people are thinking "I can't build that" on more complex items. I love your bigger and more complex stuff and want to try them all, but I often rule out building them (at least in the near term) because of a few reasons:
1) Initial cost of time and materials. Without a ready and willing buyer (including the wife), the initial investment can appear more than the average builder can absorb if this project doesn't sell quickly.
2) storage. If a project doesn't move quickly, we have to store it somewhere. If we don't have indoor storage, then it sits outside. Projects that sit in the weather are harder to sell and eventually become a sunk cost.
3) Build space. This is my biggest problem with larger projects. I work out of a 2 car garage that is full of stuff and have to set up and tear down for everything I work on. I've tried establishing a process to make it less of a burden, but I still have a good 10 - 20 minutes on each end of a build dedicated to set-up/takedown. Larger projects just don't work in spaces like that. Most side hustle people likely have similar constraints.
Smaller, simpler items do well because they can batch them out and move them without having to do long term storage and initial cost is low. If they don't sell, no big deal. Also, smaller items do better at craft fairs where they can offload them for cheap if normal pricing doesn't work well. Quick build before a show, easy offload after a show. Small build space to make them. This makes them more appealing.
Again, I love your bigger projects, and at some point when I have a dedicated shop I will most definitely try them out, but for now I am (and many like me) limited in our capacity.
Keep up the awesome work, big and small. Seeing your new videos are the highlight of my week and a huge source of my motivation to build. Semper Fi
Thanks for the input. You make good points. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
I mean this as the utmost of compliments, you are the BOB ROSS of woodworking. I find myself in a mesmerized trance when i watch [and listen] to your videos. You have that cool/calm demeanor that Bob Ross had and I absolutely love it!
I take that as the highest compliment. Bob was the master. Thanks brother.
Absolutely agree. Just a tone that says "I love doing this and you should too". Everything is well Articulated also. It's great
I’m just gonna drop this happy little nailer board with some pocket hole screws and yea
I’m just proud of myself for knowing what you’re even talking about 😂
😆
Hey Matthew, long time subscriber / builder and plan purchaser. Your fence pickets look very clean. Are these as purchased from the big box store or are they surfaced in any way?
I cheat on sanding pickets.
Light pass through the planer gets em smooth enough
Another great video of an approachable woodworking project for all levels. It’s one of the things that sets you apart sir. Have gained so much confidence from your channel and your projects. Appreciate you!
I love to hear this! Thanks for the support!
Saweeeeeeet
Does anything get added to the bottom or is it left open? Great build by the way, I love watching your videos. Great content!!
That’s awesome thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Lovely design and it looks great just one question. Since there is no bottom to this did you add the dirt directly to the planter or just place potted plants into this? My wife just asked me about making something like this so great timing!! 😊
Great job Matt...what would you charge someone for this?
Really pretty, Matthew! You do nice work!
Thanks so much!
Omg I absolutely Love these planters! My husband just bought a set of your plans for the white planters!! Can't wait to get him started on making them .. 💛Great job Matt as always!!!
Thanks! Annnnd sorry hubs😬
Lol i struggle so hard with keeping the pocket hole flush when I screw them, I also had a difficult time following which needed pocket holes.. think im just going to wing it from here.
Can the 2x4's withstand elements the way the cedar planks can? Im worried about the water dripping down inside adn creating a puddle and ruining the base.
Man I don't know how you manage to not only come up with these killer projects, but also make entertaining videos time after time. I definitely appreciate it though, keep it up man!
Thank you!
Have a question about this and all the other planter boxes on this most excellent channel - it's never really discussed what goes on the inside of them to hold the dirt. I'm assuming some kind of landscape fabric is laid in and attached somehow? Is there any support you add at the bottom like a couple of 2x2 or 2x4 braces? Thanks Matt!
He always has the Flattest fence pickets
When I find a good batch (not very often) I buy a lot lol.
How much would you sell one of these bad boys for?
How much do you think you had in costs for this? You often talk about that but if you did here, I missed it.
Must have edited it out, but It takes 3 - 2x4x8 or you can use 2- 2x4x12's. Right now in my area a 2x4x12 is $4.98 and an 8' is $3.35 (cheapest I've seen a 12' in a bit) and it takes 5 pickets at 8' ( $2.98 for pine). So If you wanted to paint these and use pine you could build one for right at $25 in wood.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking is there a difference between a 1x6 and a fence picket?
@@Caddilaclizard Fence pickets have rough exteriors with one rougher than the other. They are between 3/8 and 5/8's, 1x lumber are generally 3/4 thick. 1x have smooth sides.
Hi Matt, bought plans for this recently and about finished up. Was wondering if you think the frame could be held together with 15 or 16 gauge nails instead of pocket hole screws?
Matthew, what about bottom? Any planter supports installed?
Great vid can't wait to make. Do you just buy big containers that fill up the space to the top or do add some sort of supports for more shallow containers?
What about a base and how much would you sell this for?
I am wanting to get a Kreg jig and wondering which one to start with? Advice? Thank you 🙂
Keren👍
Really cool Matt! Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Where can you get the plans now. The Etsy link isn't working. Would love to know
Watch a lot of your videos. I'm a beginner on doing things like this I've learned a lot from watching .love your work .and enjoy watching them
Awesome, thank you!
Hey Matthew I ordered some blue prints off your Etsy account like 3 months ago and still haven’t gotten them.
Hey go to the option message seller and let us know this and we will get you fixed up.
I’m new to this and I love your videos. I’m so glad I found them! I have a question about your fence boards that you use. They look very smooth. I’m wondering if you sand them before you cut them into pieces, or do they come like that? I haven’t been able to find anything that smooth.
I do pick through the piles and choose the best ones possible. I sand them or run them through a planer when needed.
I know you're up in KY, so you probably understand this, but if it doesn't warm up soon, we're not gonna need any planters.😂
Yes! We need it to warm up!
I am looking for some simple beginner planters.
Super design. And yes, it does look more complicated than it turns out to be. Great job! Going to be making a couple for our new house this spring.
Sir first I want to Thank you for possibly saving my life. Let me explain. Back in the fall of 21 I had a back injury that needed surgery 10 days before surgery I had a lower leg blood clot surgery not happening till blood clots go away. Then the fall of 22 4 clots went through my heart and ended up in my lungs. I recovered and again surgery was not a option. My condition makes it hard to walk and stand for more than 5 minutes. Also my injury has stopped my ability to work, so was looking for another option. I came across your RUclips video on planter Boxes and I said to myself I can make that. So now I watch your channel all the time for tips and tricks. Also the planter Boxes are flying out of my shop faster than I can make them. By watching your videos I have a new income for me and my wife and I Truly Thank you for finding your videos. They saved me.
Thanks again
The Angry Beaver wood shop run by

I hate to hear about your recent health issues but I am so glad you have found a way to keep on keeping on. I too have severe back pain/issues that are non surgical so I can definitely sympathize with you and how tough it is just to move at times. Keep up the awesome work and thank you for your support.
Oh man, I've been wanting an idea for a planter mailbox. I think I found a winner! Thanks for posting.
Great Idea!
A note about the plans, I think the Cutting Layout contains a mistake that needs correction. The error regards the length of the fence boards used in the project.
The plans call for five 6’ fence boards which, of course, are 72” long. However, when you begin cutting the boards to length, you’ll quickly realize that you can’t get the specified number of pieces from each board.
By my calculations, we should be working with 8’ (96”) fence boards, not 6’. If they’re available. It’s that, or the cutting layout needs realignment to accommodate 6’ material.
Here’s what I mean: the first board, for example, shows 3 pieces at 16”, 3 at 12”, and 2 at 4”. 3 x 16 = 48; 3 x 12 = 36; and 2 x 4 = 8. 48 + 36 + 8 = 92. And so on down the list. If you add up the lengths of the pieces laid out on each board, you’ll see that we should be working with 8’ boards.
If you don’t account for this before purchasing the wood, you’ll be making an extra trip. Thankfully, I bought an extra fence board to cover my inevitable mistakes. I haven’t yet figured out if that will be enough to make up for the shortage (I don’t think it will)-I wanted to get this comment out for those who purchase the plans. I’d love to be wrong, but I don’t think I am.
Finally, I want to mention that otherwise the content in the tiered planter plans is pretty good compared to some I have bought from other woodworking channels. My wife is looking forward to having this planter on our deck this summer.
I absolutely love this build and this series! I do have a question though, how do you come up with these builds and what's you thought process of how you're going to build it. I'm still new at woodworking and trying to expand it into an actual business. Thank you again for at that you do, keep up the great work.
Don't reinvent the wheel, don't over-complicate it. Start with projects like this, based on other people's builds and you will develop your own style and pieces overtime.
I love getting these vids fresh out of the shop!
I love this! I also think just selling different heights of singles and double planters would be a great strategy. Someone with a deck might want matching boxes in multiple places....
Great idea!
Man I wish I had a table saw!
One of these days I will save up enough money for one, but that all has to take a back seat when you are a widowed father of 5.
I will eventually get one once my kids are a little older. I have a nice empty spot in my work shop for it just gotta wait.
Thank you so much for all the effort you put into these videos!
You help keep me and my kids busy.
So the inside frame is made out of pine?
fyi to those who cant afford a pocket hole jig yet, you can get just the pocket hole drill bit by itself. eye it up manually, it may not look smooth all the time but it will be functional, just watch how deep you make the hole so there is enough meat left so the screw head seats
Yes, there are definitely cheaper options.
I absolutely love your videos, the structure, confidence boosting, so very easy to listen to and watch. I just finished your 5 tier for a gift on mother's day. I think I'm going to tackle this one next. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your talent in teaching your amazing skills.❤
Nice! Keep up the good work
What are you using to treat the wood after the project is built? Great projects by-the-way. I enjoy wood working as a hobby to relax, I'm not super good at it but I enjoy it. Thanks for sharing!
Dude, I watch ALL of your videos. I know you're going to make it clear in the video.
And you'll tell dad jokes LOL
Another awesome build I made the mistake of showing my wife. 😂😂😂 Thanks bud!
Lol uh oh. I know what you’ll be doing this week. 😂
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking Ya. Gotta finish the table saw/assembly table combo first so I have a place to work!
Do you have any idea how much work I gotta do this summer because of you? Lol. Another great. Thank you for teaching us how simple these are to make. Much appreciated!
Lol sorry about that!
Great video! Just subscribed. Can you tell me what you would sell these for?
You’ll have to do some research for what things like this are going for in your area. It’s very dependent on location.
By the way, you were right!
If you spin it around like a crazy person, it goes together much easier. 😂
Nice job Matt, my wife done said, like so I guess I best get busy but this is the third thing I'll make, my list grows faster than I can go 😂
Lol yea sorry about that 😂
You have got to keep a winning attitude!! I excelled at machinery maintenance,, so much I was promoted to Maintenance Manager within my first 2 years at a company,, I have no trade school or college in my background. Kept the attitude that ain't no machine gonna outthink me!!
Do you just fill the whole thing up with soil or do you have some type of insert that holds the soil and plants. Looks awesome and not hard to do. Just a lot of work. I agree you are your worst enemy. I’ve talked my self out of doing a lot of things. No journey taking with out taking that first step.
Aren't you concerned that the side walls will come apart if they're only attached with brad nails and glue? I mean it definitely looks better without screws visible but I'd worry about that.
Your videos have given me new hope for retirement! Thank you!
Just come to my house and help me 😂 with mine. Lol.
Lol you’ve got this.
Matthew, another wonderful instructional video. Thanks so much 😊
I look forward to your videos, and have found myself going back and watching them again. I enjoy your style of teaching. You make things easier for me to understand. Great job!
Thank you very much!
Good job and project thx for sharing enjoyed it you could also add solar lights
Great idea!
I watch a lot of makers. Yours is the most laid back and easiest to learn from. Love your projects and how you help others grow their business.
Thank you for the support!
Just asking for clarification... several places you put that the pickets are 8' or 96". but verbally in the video, you said 72" (6' ). On Etsy, the description says 8' as well. While I did find 8' pretreated pine pickets, they are $3.98 ea here in TX. I mention the price here to compare to your mentioned price of $1.98 there. Our 6' is $1.98 though.
Would you mind confirming if you mean 6' pickets or did you go up to the 8' for this build?
Thank you so very much. :)
Just buy two 6' instead of an 8'. I would recommend going with cedar as treated wood is wet and has a tendency to warp as it dries. Yeah it is more money, but it looks nicer, and you don't have toxic sawdust to deal with.
Yea... so sorry about that mix up. I usually use 6' pickets so I naturally said it. But the plans are based on 8'. You can use 6' it will just take a couple more. I'm working on getting the plan cutlist made to reflect 6'.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking Thank you Sir. Would you please let us know when your plans have the 6' picket cut list in them? I do want to purchase them.
I like this build to demonstrate how to move into larger projects and increase woodwork confidence. Well done.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can hardly wait to attempt this project.
Have fun!
No breakdown of price points? nooooo lol... Good build as always!
How much are you charging for one
Do you have any ideas for a burial flag, and a memorial case for a deceased veteran
Bought the plans today. Question…I’m in SW Florida…can I use untreated white pine for the frame interior? I could easily paint with exterior to protect.
Does anybody know what the equivalent would be here in the UK? The sizes of UK pickets don't seem to match, I don't believe. Could be looking in the wrong places, perhaps?
Thanks Mat, I look forward to sharing back soon..what do you think this would price at ?? $200
HD and Lowe's charge between $200~$230, not including tax and/or shipping. Their build is different but the finished product looks the same as this one. Just FYI when setting your price point.
@@johnnyperez2087 thanks. May be my next build
A Q-Bert planter!
All of your projects are great, easy to build and affordable materials. In my area the most I can get for trellises is about $15 and about $25 for the small planters. The only way to make it worthwhile is to be efficient and think along the lines of a mass production environment. Basically about double the cost of material.
I would love to get input from you (maybe a video) saying what the range is for price in all of your projects and build times... I'd love to hear what your followers are getting from their work and their location in the country.
Good after noon. you are inspiring me to step out of the box, I am on disability. I went and looked at the DeWalt Miter Saw. A little rich for my blood, Have you got any recommendations for a reasonable compatible saw, And im not sure what the jig is the your using to drill the holes with but is there some thing out there with a fair price for a guy like me... thank you ps your work is Absolutely beautiful. you can see that you lake a lot of pride in your work, thank you again
