Matt, thank you for your channel, I have a small woodworking side business and have been watching woodworking videos for years. I think your channel is the best. You never pull out a festool domino jointer, you don’t use quarter sawn walnut and there is no C&C machine. You are the common man’s inspiration. You video are always well done and I always learn something or get inspired to build my own version of your projects. Keep up the great work.

Built my side hustle wood shop on this exact planter... yours is much simpler than mine (lots of trial and error on my end). Mine has each section boxed in with a floor and lined with landscape fabric so soil can be added direct to the box. My builds are made from thick rough cut sawmill lumber, my customers love the rustic look it gives. Keep up the great work Matt!

I am an amateur woodworker and folks dont be intimidated by these builds. Sure yours might not look as good but you learned. And learning is a huge part of woodworking. Dont be scared of new pieces of equipment, be extra safe and again learn. Use cheap wood and scraps and build stuff using your tools and...Learn. I suffer from PTSD and woodworking is a great way of helping those issues. I started with charcuterie boards and now I'm learning to work on furniture. You don't need a giant shop full of all the goodies. And lastly If you decide that woodworking is something you'll enjoy, save your pennies and get the quality made equipment. Good Karma to you Matt and everyone out there.

Great stuff, I love how you keep the new material coming and the simplicity of all your projects, I discovered you a couple months before the holidays and I've probably built about 10 or 12 different projects and my situation temporary is not that great, but like you say most can be done with very basic tools, I can attest to that , I only have a drill, circular saw, jigsaw, sander and a cheap router, belt sander, oscillating sander and an ancient miter saw from the 1990's, No planer, band saw, table saw, so if anyone is intimidated by these videos of guys with fully equipped shops and all these fancy tools, don't be, they all had to start someplace, thats why I follow Mathew, he doesn't just teach you how to build something, he also share his journey and how he got to where he's at today, he basically saying, follow me, Do what I do and you'll get what I got, Thank you again brother for all you do 🔨🔨🔨🔨

Been doing it for the last 5 years full time but have been doing it since high school, mid 80’s! I’ve just got to get done with the big builds I have on order and then start doing some of these simple but very easy sellers. Love them! Keep them coming, enjoy your videos.

What simple projects do you recommend for someone to build in a small apartment, with limited tools (basic hand tools, sander, drill, and "toy" band saw) to get started? And do you have any suggestions for any woodshop time sharing? Is there even such a thing? Thanks for all you do!

I don't think people are thinking "I can't build that" on more complex items. I love your bigger and more complex stuff and want to try them all, but I often rule out building them (at least in the near term) because of a few reasons:
    1) Initial cost of time and materials. Without a ready and willing buyer (including the wife), the initial investment can appear more than the average builder can absorb if this project doesn't sell quickly.
    2) storage. If a project doesn't move quickly, we have to store it somewhere. If we don't have indoor storage, then it sits outside. Projects that sit in the weather are harder to sell and eventually become a sunk cost.
    3) Build space. This is my biggest problem with larger projects. I work out of a 2 car garage that is full of stuff and have to set up and tear down for everything I work on. I've tried establishing a process to make it less of a burden, but I still have a good 10 - 20 minutes on each end of a build dedicated to set-up/takedown. Larger projects just don't work in spaces like that. Most side hustle people likely have similar constraints.
Smaller, simpler items do well because they can batch them out and move them without having to do long term storage and initial cost is low. If they don't sell, no big deal. Also, smaller items do better at craft fairs where they can offload them for cheap if normal pricing doesn't work well. Quick build before a show, easy offload after a show. Small build space to make them. This makes them more appealing.
Again, I love your bigger projects, and at some point when I have a dedicated shop I will most definitely try them out, but for now I am (and many like me) limited in our capacity.
Keep up the awesome work, big and small. Seeing your new videos are the highlight of my week and a huge source of my motivation to build. Semper Fi

Must have edited it out, but It takes 3 - 2x4x8 or you can use 2- 2x4x12's. Right now in my area a 2x4x12 is $4.98 and an 8' is $3.35 (cheapest I've seen a 12' in a bit) and it takes 5 pickets at 8' ( $2.98 for pine). So If you wanted to paint these and use pine you could build one for right at $25 in wood.

Sir first I want to Thank you for possibly saving my life. Let me explain. Back in the fall of 21 I had a back injury that needed surgery 10 days before surgery I had a lower leg blood clot surgery not happening till blood clots go away. Then the fall of 22 4 clots went through my heart and ended up in my lungs. I recovered and again surgery was not a option. My condition makes it hard to walk and stand for more than 5 minutes. Also my injury has stopped my ability to work, so was looking for another option. I came across your RUclips video on planter Boxes and I said to myself I can make that. So now I watch your channel all the time for tips and tricks. Also the planter Boxes are flying out of my shop faster than I can make them. By watching your videos I have a new income for me and my wife and I Truly Thank you for finding your videos. They saved me.
    Thanks again

A note about the plans, I think the Cutting Layout contains a mistake that needs correction. The error regards the length of the fence boards used in the project.
The plans call for five 6’ fence boards which, of course, are 72” long. However, when you begin cutting the boards to length, you’ll quickly realize that you can’t get the specified number of pieces from each board.
By my calculations, we should be working with 8’ (96”) fence boards, not 6’. If they’re available. It’s that, or the cutting layout needs realignment to accommodate 6’ material.
    Here’s what I mean: the first board, for example, shows 3 pieces at 16”, 3 at 12”, and 2 at 4”. 3 x 16 = 48; 3 x 12 = 36; and 2 x 4 = 8. 48 + 36 + 8 = 92. And so on down the list. If you add up the lengths of the pieces laid out on each board, you’ll see that we should be working with 8’ boards.
If you don’t account for this before purchasing the wood, you’ll be making an extra trip. Thankfully, I bought an extra fence board to cover my inevitable mistakes. I haven’t yet figured out if that will be enough to make up for the shortage (I don’t think it will)-I wanted to get this comment out for those who purchase the plans. I’d love to be wrong, but I don’t think I am.
Finally, I want to mention that otherwise the content in the tiered planter plans is pretty good compared to some I have bought from other woodworking channels. My wife is looking forward to having this planter on our deck this summer.

Just asking for clarification... several places you put that the pickets are 8' or 96". but verbally in the video, you said 72" (6' ). On Etsy, the description says 8' as well. While I did find 8' pretreated pine pickets, they are $3.98 ea here in TX. I mention the price here to compare to your mentioned price of $1.98 there. Our 6' is $1.98 though.
Would you mind confirming if you mean 6' pickets or did you go up to the 8' for this build?
Thank you so very much. :)

    • @greenhornadventure
      @greenhornadventure Год назад

Just buy two 6' instead of an 8'. I would recommend going with cedar as treated wood is wet and has a tendency to warp as it dries. Yeah it is more money, but it looks nicer, and you don't have toxic sawdust to deal with.
