When I was a kid, my dad and I stopped at a gas station that had a replica of a famous car out front. Of course we stopped and my dad talked with the guy running the gas station for a while and he was nice enough to let me get into the car and play around. So, as little boys do, I was making engine sounds, imagining I was drifting around on dirt roads and jumping creeks.
There was a button on the dash. Did it honk the horn? Would it play Dixie? Would it do anything at all? I had to know.
As it turns out, when you build a replica of something like a race car, you don't need a keyed ignition, a brake interlock or any of the other safety features you might find on a production car.
The engine fired right up, the car had been parked in 1st gear and the 350 small block had plenty of torque at idle to get the car rolling.
The guy running the gas station was able to dive half way through the driver side window and shut the car down before I got into the road or hit anything and no damage was done, but...
The man running the gas station was terrified and shaken, my dad was terrified and embarrassed and I had driven The General Lee.
    One of my fondest memories.

@@monkemode8128 I doubt it, the amount of maintenence that the US' fancy toys require is insane. Even their service weapons need far more maintenance to keep working right than something like the AK. Hell the reason behind the creation of the AK and similar weapons was because the soviets knew that their men (and peasant revolutionaries in other countries) weren't going to maintain their gear properly so they needed something that can go without it for a long time. Somehow I doubt the Taliban is anymore disciplined than that.

@@monkemode8128Probably not. Rotor/engine wear and blade damage would take their operational toll fairly quickly, as would issues like hoses breaking and a Blackhawk needing specific engine fluids and lubricants that aren't likely to be readily available.
Even putting aside the risk to passengers from sketchy maintenance, such maintenance also reduces the tactical effectiveness of the helicopter, because its reliability concerns make it riskier to base a strategy around.

I recall my AME instructor telling us how a Bell 206 crashed at a mining exploration base he was working at in the Arctic. The maintenance crew used the wrong alloy tubing for a fuel line repair because they didn't wanted to wait for a proper replacement to ship up from Edmonton. It crashed 2 weeks after the repair. The chopper's vibrations had work hardened and embrittled the unapproved tubing, and it cracked from the fatique.

There is a huge amount of ANA that stepped up and that we trained but the majority of the country was led by fear and intimidation by the taliban, many of the afghan soldiers the US trained ended up at some point flipping sides, going back to fight us alongside the taliban. Any book/ school agenda/ binder I owned had Airwolf drawn on it at least 10 to 90 times. Little ones in mini battle action shots between words of print, big ones that took three pieces of loose leaf taped together to show a schematic of where all the guns and my camping gear would be (with a built in Slurpee machine and mini freezer for Hot Pockets 😉). Now all I draw are blueprints for boring fuel cells and solar farms at work.

You shouldn't be allowed to vote if you think the sitting president is solely responsible for the cluster fuck that was left for him. Afghanistan started 20 years before Biden was even in office. Read a book. Or read a newspaper. Doesn't even matter which one. Just stop learning from the internet. It's so sad. Actually read some history books. Check out post wwI Germany and the rise of nationalism and hopefully you can connect some dots before you become another pathetic casualty of idiocracy

OH NO, A BUNCH OF OUTDATED EQUIPMENT! What will we ever use to stop our OWN DESIGNS, we couldn't possibly know their weaknesses! However shall we prevail against an army that can't replace parts of things we made 50 years ago? The horror!

Trump freed 5,000 Taliban prisoners, (in a deal between Pompeo and the Taliban to buy time for withdrawl) withdrew most US military forces from Afghanistan, and left all of that equipment there like 8 months prior to leaving Kabul. You can thank Joey B all you want but it started with the previous administration. Also, the taliban ain't gonna do much with what was left behind. Not too worried about it. Hell, Iran could wipe them off the map before they even get to level 2 with how to fly a chopper.
