You now there is a reason why she was voted by SAG's 100,000 Members... Fran's intelligent, eloquent, and outspoken. And she has a reputation in the industry. Please see their website and the past presidents, and you'll be amazed. And the first guy was also reading the teleprompter, obviously.
These greedy studio heads keep giving themselves these extreme pay raises off the backs of many people who are unable to maintain a living and going hungry. Unacceptable
First the WGA goes on strike, now over 2 months later, SAG-AFTRA joins them on the picket lines. You know, this is the first time since 1960 that the actors and writers were on strike at the same time. Knowing this, it begs the question: How long will this "double strike" last before these 2 unions get the fair contracts they deserve?
My daughter works in the film and television industry in Canada and as a member of ACTRA (Canadian version of SAG-AFTRA), she's been out of work for a few months now because of the writers' strike and quite frankly, we're proud of her for sticking it out. We're proud of the actors' guild for joining the writers. The writers weren't asking for anything outlandish or unreasonable. They want to be secure in the knowledge that greedy Weinsteins of the industry don't replace them with AI. Furthermore, they weren't only thinking of themselves, they're asking for assurance that AI can not replace ANYONE, including actors, camera operators, cinematographers, editors, etc... I hope that going forward, with this new addition of actors striking, that they demand other things to, like living wages, fair residuals and profit distribution. More medical and safety staff on sets/filming locations, access to mental health support, guaranteed paid sick leave and paid maternity/paternal leave with job security. At this point, in almost every department, if you take ANY kind of leave, whether it's justified or not-you can kiss your spot goodbye. Furthermore, there is a HUGE problem with credit being taken by senior production members for the work of new or junior crew members. It's across the board, from AS to the Writing and post teams. Soooo much industry NEEDS to change, but this is a start! If you have a loved one affected by this strike, please support them in any way you can. If you can't donate money, then you can bring them food and other dayto day supplies. Fill their gas tank for them, do what ever you can, because they've been without pat for months now and God only knows how long these filthy rich industry Oligarchs are gonna continue cry "broke" before they are forced to do the right thing.
Could not agree more. Well put! Wishing your daughter and all in the industry the very best. There are ball caps for sale that support the writers guild for anyone interested. ❤
I work for a limo company employed by MANY movie studios. We have been dead all summer since the writer's strike and now with this one we are crippled to the bone.
So to everyone who wanted to attack Sydney Sweeney earlier this year when she talked about not being paid enough from all of the shows and movies she’s been in, most of her income comes from sponsorships, and having to use all of her money to lay her publicist and managers…..this is exactly what she meant. Now yes, she could’ve worded herself much better but the meaning is still the same. Actors and actresses in Hollywood aren’t being treated fairly no matter who they are, and how famous they are and when I say “famous” I don’t mean money wise, I mean popularity wise. Most of the money is going to rich CEO’s of all these production companies, streamers, and the use of new technology like A.I which hurts every older generation actor/actress and every new generation actor/actress. Fran is correct, the times have changed and unfortunately Hollywood isn’t paying on their own people like they used to and should. Being an actor or actress in Hollywood is already hard enough because booking roles isn’t always that easy…..but making money from those roles especially for younger stars which for child stars….they barely get paid, it’s ridiculous.
and isn't that batshit crazy? she's on one of the biggest shows on hbo, and they really use her and use her body... it's kinda horrible that even someone like her would have to rely on other jobs
I am not to interested in activist actors blatenly insulting an audience unless it was comedy... But even with these feelings, Sag is necessary in performing this action of unity.
Great speech and I feel sorry for all parities involved but when Hollywood has produced so much crap over the years, it’s hard to feel sorry for anyone.
We are moving rapidly into Holodeck type technology. Need actors there and their images. It'll become a trillion dollar business but how are the actors compensated for their image and character play? The entertainment industry will be spinning on it's head.
The contracts also include using the actor's likeness with AI tech. Thats why im against that stuff. The more we accept the AI versions of actors or characters there wont be any need for real human actors. Just like tech killed a lot of the music industry with fake music and illegal downloads etc. A DJ gets paid more $$$ to play computer music than real musicians that actually play instruments. I dont wanna hear about a dj writes their own music. With what ? A computer? Taking away probably 5 or more real studio/ musicians jobs because he/she can work a keyboard . I have nothing against Synthesizers in music but they should be used to enhance music not take over. And this is whats going to happen to the film industry as well. Of course this is only the tip of the reason for the strike. There is so much more. So yeah sit back folks. If streaming is everything then start watching reruns because its gonna be a while before we see new seasons of Stranger things etc.
Why is everyone angry with the studio executives? Without them there wouldn’t be any film/tv projects. I’m far more bothered by the $25M/film Hollywood A-list actors make.
Ooofff. This does hurt. ALOTTT OF movies we looking forward too are gonna be shut down. For how long, who knows. My guess is till the new year. I wasn’t old enough to remember the 08 writers strike but I read about all the repercussions many shows faced. But this one feels bigger and louder than the last strike. Get ready to hear about alot of shows being subpar and seeing nothing but reality in the coming years.
Expect most of the movies and series will be cancelled. Studios will attempt to collect on the insurance policies. Expect to see reality series. News shows. International programing.
Well, if they lose, it emboldens companies to do it to the rest of us. Similar to layoffs at Twitter, it set off layoffs with all other tech companies. This is the trickle down effect in a negative way for all of us. So it bears watching what happens in Hollywood. What happens there could happen to us with AI disrupting many jobs already.
Why is the people that pays the actors, actresses willing to ruin TV for the. Consumer's?? They are counting on ratings to decide what shows are good, this will cause not only lower ratings, people not watching at all, I agree with Fran Dresser, this pathetic!!
@chrishart7300 if they don't refer TV, than what do they we watch ?? In our living rooms now and not everyone does the streaming deal!! So what do call your flat screen, if not tv??
Fran has some nerve lol ask Shannon Dougherty about Sags insurance and leaving her with no insurance going through chemo smh girl needs to go ahead they the first ones screwing actors out of insurance
What’s their solution, streaming has commoditised media content the repeat money from dvd and tv and is cable gone. Look no further than the music industry to see exactly what is happening where the music holders get fractions of a cent per listen the artist a fraction of that. If media doesn’t adapt for the times there content will just be pirated and they will get nothing the future will be a slimmer and more adaptable industry these trailing commissions won’t survive
Unrealistic. Buzz word filled. So obvious that no one knows what AI is. Thanks for putting the entire workforce’s security and wellness on the line. SAG is just going to end up signing a deal favoring the studios again because no guild can outlast how long the studios can wait. Might as well have COMPROMISED in the first place instead of being consumed with uninformed greed.
I want to see no deal. Let this last for a long time. I get this comment, but as a SAG-AFTRA member, I would wait 1, 3, or 5 years. That’s crippling but I’m the person that could wait. However I have that ability though since I’m not full time in the industry.
If Fran Drescher keeps shouting and throwing a fit like she did at the news brief she’s gonna either blow a gasket 🤯 or totally loose her voice completely. Relax Fran everything will be ok. Trust in Capitalism 💰$$$
Not really because how long is it going to be when your job is threaten by AI. Granted most of SAG's members live better lives than most it mainly the studios that are greedy.
@@someutubchannel69 Only 1% of SAG members can actually make a living as an actor. 99% of SAG members have another job because acting doesn't make them a living wage.
Very empassioned speech and really scary when you see your career and livelihood threatened. That said, the writing is already on the wall for so many people in the movie and TV industry, and those dream "fame and fortune" careers will become even more difficult to attain in the future. Like it or not computer generated entertainment will not only become undetectable but also CHEAPER and less risky than human actors and at the current pace AI will be able to replace the development side within 20 years. In addition, digital streaming has leveled the playing field for anyone that has a camera, some charisma, and editing skills. Fight for what you have while you can but if you are still young and love entertaining people I strongly suggest focusing on live entertainment, like the music business had to do when record sales dried up. Let's also not forget the SAG union itself has a financial interest, they are considered non-profit but that is very different than a volunteer charity. Not saying there is anything wrong with that but its also always important to understand all sides of an argument and all motivations. www.sagaftra.org/membership-benefits/membership-costs deadline.com/2022/08/sag-aftra-1-billion-dollars-dues-fees-since-2012-membership-record-high-1235084793/

When a studio owns an extra's digital image to sell and use any way it deems via AI without compensation, something needs to change.
We know they'd use the likeness well after that actor is deceased.
that's intellectual property infringement. Artists, authors etc... should start "copyrighting" their image, voices, styles, public personas.
Something dramatically needs to change.
