Looking Back - 2002 - Original T-Mobile Sidekick (Danger Hiptop)

- Опубликовано: 27 авг 2014
- We look back at the very first Sidekick phone. Launched in 2002, the device was over 1-inch thick, had a monochromatic display and some entertaining polyphonic tones. It even had a novelty camera you could plug in to the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Although it didn't sell in its millions, the Sidekick has to be one of the most iconic and instantly-recognizable phones ever released. Its unique 180-degree spinning screen covering a fantastic QWERTY keyboard had never really been seen before, and nothing like it has been released since.

I miss old phones, each phones were different and had unique styles. Nowadays, phones are just giant thin bricks with touchscreens and no soul...
Yeah but now, even though all the phones just have a big screen, you can do so much with it. Take great pictures & videos, have different apps that you like and need, read books, watch movies, stream Internet, watch Netflix & RUclips, it's crazy but phones are just so much better today than back then.
+Moneygetjealous It's not about that. Like he said, they were different and unique styles. I'm on my iPhone 6 Plus but these ain't all that. It's all the same shit now.
Thibaut Danner Newsflash, nothing has a soul.
That was really a very narrow period of time. From like 1995-2002 it was all Nokia rip offs. From 2002-2005 it was all flip phones. There was very little “innovation”
Me too I miss old the phones, phones nowadays especially iPhones their all the same to me in my opinion no matter what version comes out, plus back in the 2000s phones like the blackberry was very popular even the celebrities had those types of phones and other old phones as well, but tbh even in today’s times I would buy me an old phone and I don’t care about other people’s opinions,I really do miss the old days with the old phones.
My parents bought me this model in color in 2004. Simply cannot believe how far we've come in a little more than 10 years. In an era filled with a billion renditions of the same Nokia phone, this was a game changer. Like it or not, this was one of the first devices to engage the younger generation in the greatest form of "Social Media" we had at the time, AIM.
Nonya Biznes naw social media now is cancer. Back then it was fun and enjoyable
The sidekick did catch on. And it did live up to its potential. It was the Beats by Dre of the early 2000s. I remember looking for it and spotting it in the music videos. When a celebrity was using a sidekick, it was all the buzz.
Maybe in the US. But not anywhere else. iPhone has huge appeal across the globe. It could have been bigger, which would have meant it lasted longer.
no one used the sidekick over here nor any other country, they didn't even sell in other places other then america
I remember having this and paying $30 a month extra added to my plan for 1,000 text messages...
I always wanted that phone when I was a freshman in High School.
I remember this back in 2005, I thought it was the greatest thing ever.
+iTheGeek nasty 😭
I wanted one of these SO BAD as a kid. We had Cingular though, so I couldn't get one.
Now you can use a unlocked sidekick from EBay
I always wanted a sidekick but never got one. Sadly. :'(
I had one, it was cool. You could even load up a yahoo messanger ap that would show you if someone was hiding in private mode lol
puppetmasterblaster I have the LX (2007)
@@puppetmasterblaster hahahaha true.. Imma buy all the collections sidekicks to display them on my room
Oh the sidekick. Nostalgia. My first phone, the Sidekick LX. I was heartbroken when they discontinued it.
I remember they used it in zoey 101 lol
L U N A lol these were tec decks
JoEs_ Do9 I think you meant tekmates
LOVED MY SIDEKICK! I had sidekick 1,2, and 3. Then I got the moto droid in 2010 and then iPhone. I wish they were still a thing! I miss these days.
I still have and will forever cherish my T-Mobile Sidekicks!
My older sisters are 90's babies and had this phone, and I'm a 00's baby and wanted one so bad, still want one 😂
Found my old sidekicks today... Man I miss them. I really wish we could get a remade version.
Loving these flashback videos -- it makes me feel all nostalgic inside. haha
Oooh this phone is perfect it's like a modern phone with an old display i want it!
but it's not existed on my country (lel)
I still want one
I loved my old SK so much. Had the very first one. I keep looking for a phone like it. Thank you for posting this so I could show someone how amazing this device had been. (So long as you never wanted to use it for calls.)
All versions were great revolutionary solid devices I had the Sidekick 2 and the Sidekick LX💪🏾
These were so satisfying to flip open and closed. My sister had one and I always wanted it. She always got the upgrades before I did, so she got the Razr before me, too. Never did get a sidekick, though, but maaan, I wanted one.
I was a Sidekick 2, loved, loved, that device. Thanks for the flashback memories.
The Sidekick 2, I Believe Was The Best, And My Personal Favorite In The Entire Sidekick Lineup.
I always wanted one. I always had Verizon. And I still want one so badly. This was my dream phone. :'(
it was a GREAT phone
1javixD still u can buy it from aliexpress.
They have an android version, but it slides up
+1javixD i hear you!! i want to get one of these still I'm on verizon now... i may switch in a few months and get me one
+1javixD It's the swiveling screen shit that got me....
I always like watching videos on older cell phones and smartphones, and your series Cam has been by far the best I have seen on RUclips featuring a variety of different old school phones, please keep them coming as I always look forward to these videos! :D
I had a sidekick LX after it's release and seeing how awesome the 2 and 3 were, man. I actually lasted my entire contract with the LX, gosh how I loved that phone!
I literally just had this exact conversation today with a buddy at school.
I remember a friend of mine in middle school had one. Sidekicks were like the cool peoples blackberrys
Wow the memories of old school ***** Sidekick
***** You should bring back a slim high end screen version of this phone back! With the light ball and metal! That would be different than all the phone today!
***** Fake.
Jacob Anderson Except it's verified....
Jacob Anderson LOLZ
My cousin had this in the mid 2000s and she seemed so cool flipping out the screen to text...always wanted a phone like that
This brings back so many memories! I had the sidekick II, it was my first phone and I loved it.
I remember when I got my Sidekick 3 & T-Mobile wasn't in my area at the time, so it would connect to the SunCom towers & I was the only person at school with a Sidekick. I never brought attention to myself, by people brought attention to me about it. Everybody wanted to know what it was, how I got it, wanted to hold it, flip the screen, etc lol. I still have my Sidekicks; all of them. I really do miss them. Just the other day I pulled out my SKLX & turned it on just for kicks :P man, that keyboard was amazing....
I had two color variant, and I loved it so much. I still remember when I used to be the text King on AIM
Hey Cam, thanks for the upload. You really came through with this one!!
Thanks man!
Great video, I love this series.!!! Keep them coming.
Sidekick! Cam, as you may remember I have a Sidekick 2! It was great. Only real problem during the years I had it was the rubber covering on the keyboards adhesive, which lifted and caused many in the keys to not work correctly. It was an awesome phone with so many great functions that we enjoy today on smartphones. Thanks for featuring a great phone!
I had the Sidekick Slide, Sidekick 08, and last the Sidekick LX 09 Orchid. And let me tell you I still miss that phone so much!
It is just so crazy how technology has progressed so fast! 15 years ago we were pretty much still using Nokia's and were using our huge chunky iPods!!!
I was obsessed with this phone when I was younger (cause of paris hilton)... never got one!
Another great throwback. Keep em coming
I had a Sidekick 07, which I actually picked up instead of a G1/Dream. I loved the keyboard, I still miss it. I'd love to see a decent Android powered Sidekick.
Wow.. I miss this phone! You were "cool" if you had one. I wish they were still around. Great video Cam! :)
Thanks! :-)
This was my favorite phone ever. I had from all up until the lx
I had a T-mobile Sidekick 4G for a little while. I LOVED texting on it!
I loved my Sidekick 3 the keypad was just too good!
If there's anytime to bring them back, it should be now. Lately, people have been on the whole nostalgia craze and wanting older style phones with physical keyboard (me included). They should keep the swivel screen and keep the blinking LED trackball. They should use android, but skin it so that it looks like the original Danger OS. It would be a HUGE hit once again!
Remember Midnight Club LA? Ahhhh Good Times
I own a sidekick ID and still works
I loved the sidekick, the LX was my favorite. I wish sharp would make another running android with a customized overlay, I would buy it in a heartbeat and love it just as much as I did it's older brothers.
I'm through being embarrassed for liking physical qwerty keyboards. SIDEKICK DID IT FIRST AND BEST. Look at that ridiculous key spacing. They knew what worked.
You will never find key spacing like that again. Now you are lucky if the keys are even staggered (not lined up one above one another like a checker board grid).
Plus sideKick had auto-text expansion you get to decide ("w" becomes "with") ("t" becomes "the") that carries over one sidekick to the next upgrade so you don't have to program it all over again.
With text expansion I could type as fast on my sidekick walking around a pond on a beautiful day as I could back on my pc.
Each key felt like a felty tip of pencil eraser, and satisfyingly clicked under your finger tip to let you know it was pressed. I don't think we will ever see a product this superior again.
+trombone7 we will never get the same keyboard again!!!!
TRUTH.
Rose colored glasses! These phones were super expensive, broke easily, and even by 2002 standards had horrible screens and performance
My friend has one of these (it was actually the Sidekick 2) in high school.
She used to swivel the damn screen around all the time. I was so jealous!
I still want a fuckin sidekick
I used to want one of these.
I had the 3, blue lx and the 4G, love my Note 4 I have now. But the sidekicks will always be part of my memories.
I loved the last version so much
One of my favorite phones
I loved my Kicks had just about one of ever version back in the day. They were just so cool for the time. It didn't matter that websites took forever to load or that it was heavy as heck. It was really a well thought out and designed device for what it did. I miss mine sometimes.
I had one. the brown 2007 edition. awesome phone! and i mean the most awesome phone ever! when i brought it back to Europe it started to loose functions (contacts would not have their names any more, pictures could-t be synced any more, notifications wouldn't notify), like it knew it's not in the US... eventually the battery gave and I was forced to go for a typical smartphone. I still have it though. best phone I've ever had! i took nots in class with it cause I didn't need to look at the keyboard... best keyboard experience on a portable device! hands down
My buddy got one in 2003. I remember going with him in his brand new 2002 double cab Tacoma. Blasting Ludacris on the way up. I was 20 lol.
They should make phones like these with addition of it being touchscreen. This is so attractive tech. Who wouldn't buy it?
oh my early 20`s i miss my youth so baddly i was on my full glory of my youth and success ! my youth will never comeback
Everyone had a Sidekick in NyC back in mid 00s. I got my in HS in 2006 and seriously only the cools kids had it lol It was like if u didnt have one u were a nobody. But they were soo expensive I had to beg my dad to get one😂😂 I did loved them tho and wish they were back
Never seen this one before. My first phone was in 2002 and it was your standard Nokia handset, 6340i
Man somebody needs to make a new one so i can get one. I miss it :(
Back in high school this phone was for the MySpace and AIM whores
You said it Cam, Blackberry Sidekick would be so cool!
What a LOT of people dont know is there was Sidekick Black and White (in this video) and then there was the Sidekick Color which also had the swivel display, both released separately apart from one another. Sidekick 2, LX, TonyHawk (1 application difference) LX, 3, all had the swivel display; only the 4g did not have it. However the 4g was the first touchscreen ability on it of the sidekick series. T-Mobile cancelled the data plan on this phone in 2013 with a 6 month lay over which ultimately ended in early 2014. This plan was unlimited data and text for 20.00 a month if you kept the same plan from the Black and White series and forward. The original plan was 500 Whenever minutes Unlimited Nights and Weekend (There was a 250 minute plan but the nights and weekends wasn't part of it). The ONE thing I truly missed with this phone was the phone connectivity. I NEVER dropped a call, never had issues talking to anyone ever. Since then even my Galaxy 5 phone isn't clear with the same provider.
The 4g can be unlocked and used with ATT which I can confirm does work.
growing up in Europe as a Myspace kid i HAD to have this phone. Got ripped off two times online and never received one. Later i found out that you couldn't use it here anyway. Good times, still would buy one to this day !
Close your eyes and it's almost like a nerdy Bane is doing this video.
lol.. Nerdy Bane?
lol!!!
I had the sidekick 3 in the uk even though it became near impossible to find one here, i dream of the sidekicks comeback with 180 screen kick, the best phone i have ever owned even over my 5s!
Loved mine. It had software features other systems didn't get for years (sleep/quiet times). Allowed more parties on a conference call than my Blackberry. Had a bad rep as a kids device but functioned very well.
Most iconic phone ever!? You are wrong! I haven't even heard of this thing until this video.
i think he means it as a really cool phone
The Sidekick was the shit! EVERYONE had one. You're just a sheltered loser. Lol
+MrJTYoung7 Well, it's just that I think the iPhone was more well known.
its like a dreamcast phone
What a lovely, chunky design.
I HAD ONE, I LOVED THIS PHONE. I MADE IT UP TO THE SIDEKICK 3
That is an awesome phone!
I still have all my old Sidekicks. I wish MS would've allowed the Danger folks to do a Sidekick with Windows Phone OS. I'd buy that!
Totally miss my Sidekick LX, awesome keyboard (almost topped Blackberry), good calling, really fun interface..the list goes on. However, during the big blackout of '09 really hampered the experience.
This phone rocked
it's so cute. I'd buy one
Dope! Love these throwback reviews. You should review the Nokia N-Gage or the Virgin Mobile 'Slider'
wow I never knew this is where the sidekick line came from omg it looks like an over inflated gba
One of the best phones ive ever had i had the 2.0 version with the color screen not the green one but the phone was so easy to type and with the $20 unlimited sidekick plan you couldn't do any better i still have the sidekick 2 actually the first one broke from the wheel
fxtec pro1 is the closest new thing, quite happy there is finally a serious attempt at a keyboard phone again
I had this phone lol it was huge. I used to buy phones off eBay then resale the to my coworkers for the same price I bought online. I would switch phone like a rich kid 😂😂
Had it loved it.
Back then, I was in middle school with a prepaid cingular flip phone.
The best keyboard of that decade for aim and text
I had one, and it was definitely the most cool phone, aside from the first polished chrome back iPhone.
I got a Sharp made Sidekick in 2009 or 2010. Memories LOL
I had a Sidekick Lx 2009. By far my favorite phone ever. I would trade my iphone for one in a heartbeat. I loved the themes. And how depending on the theme the sound when you opened the screen would be different. The thing I didn't like about it is the inbox and outbox while texting. It wasn't all in a list like modern smartphones.
I has the sidekick 2 and sidekick 3... memories..
i bought the 2nd because it was used in zoe 101 :)
This phone was she only reason I would've switched from Verizon. I still love it.
For a phone back in 2002, it looks pretty nice
Why I love it
Never owned on but looks really cool! Be interesting to see it make a comeback!
i probably wasn't a full year old yet when this phone came out. if i were able to at the time, i'd have gotten it.
Phones use to be fun, today they are all the same. I was happy to see the birth of touch screen, but I Didn't think it was going to beat out the rest, thus killing the fun!
And T-Mobile was the 1st Truly Innovative Mobile Service. There was even Fax Service on the Phone.
I had the second generation sidekick "color screen" on T-Mobile along with my Motorola i95c by nextel good times sidekick most definitely had the best keyboard.
I had a sidekick in 2007 was pretty cool mine was purple and white and felt like the Boss in middle school lol
