I got invited to come spend the day at Skywalker Ranch back in 96 and "audition" for Phantom Menace. George had seen me performing in the show Stomp, met me backstage and said he had me in mind for a character. When they sat me down to put me on tape, they showed me a poster board of this guy Watto. I didn't get the job and of course, it was my Stompmate Ahmed Best who ended up landing the JarJar gig.
Yeah partly because of Dave Filoni going all over the place with lore, Rodians speaking Basic/English? Twelieks having French accents, Palpatine and senators approving trading spice to ransom demanders? At least Rebels has tried to keep most of it more inline with what we have already seen and accept at "The Star Wars Universe" than just doing whatever he wanted in The Clone Wars.
I never thought about all these details they put in when animating Watto but now that I realise them I feel like I appreciate Watto a lot more. Always loved this slimy guy! quite sad that he lost everything on that pod race but he wasn't too nice either. Tatooine is full of interesting characters and I would love to see a whole Star Wars film set on it or just focus more on aliens.
Thank God the animators got to make his face more detailed and actually turn him into a character and not just another Cgi muscle flex. Also Liam Neison in sweatpants is adorable.
It is funny, when I was watching this movie as a kid, never thought that he is a jew mock. Also, I never thought about the Neomodians that they are supposed to be Chinese mocks. What I saw as a kid was a lot of ugly figures with a funny tone of accent. We should just let go of this super-duper political correctness, and have a good time.
When it comes to the bad or more accurately: dated cgi in the prequels, I view the aliens as "stylized" characters, something like LoZ: The Wind Waker or Team Fortress 2 where it's not supposed to be realistic. I know the cgi was supposed to be realistic, but if you look at it from the perspective of it being stylized, or that some species should looks a little slimey or something along those lines, they don't look as bad. That's the advantage of Star Wars taking place in space, since 90% of the creatures in the franchise are aliens, they don't need to look 100% realistic when it comes to detail. Because of this I don't see the creatures as looking horrible, never have. Part of it might be because I did grow up with the Prequels as well as the Originals, but for me they still look pretty believable because there is a lot of detail, especially with Watto here, and they're aliens. Same case with Force Awakens, I've seen a lot of complaints about "bad cgi" and "oh those cgi aliens were so fake" and I'm like that fit within the universe ironically because of the dated cgi of the prequels. Plus some characters like that junker guy at the beginning looked like he would be a bit slimey in my opinion. Plus the voice actor was in a suit for filming, looks like the cgi was just used for the face so the character had expressions. People like to hate on cgi so badly when a lot of times it actually works really well. I can understand cgi humans because that involves in the uncanny valley (something is so close yet not close enough to look real that your brain sends mixed messages) and people's brains react differently, but when it comes to other things like aliens I feel like people shouldn't be so strict on how realistic it looks...then again maybe people's brain react differently to everything digital and not just cgi humans. idk :P
That Ginger Cunt From Terminator 2 I always thought Watto & Jar Jar looked great. Episode II’s CIS leaders were very rough. Episode I & III still look amazing.
Are there anymore documentaries or feature's from the Star Wars website that are different from the dvd and/or blu ray release of the films? I would love to see them. Thanks for the information.

They made him Jewish with a long nose that cares only about money. Get a clue lol In Attack of the clones he even wears a similar hat and beard like a hadassic jew. Coincidence?
Snowflake bullshit! I would love if Watto were a fucking latin accent dealer of death sticks, because I am a latin. That is NOT insulting that is actually paying tribute to our FUCKING earth culture.
@@purefoldnz3070 Did you NOT just watch the video? The design was originally for the Nemoidians and the voice actor came up with the accent. You idiots never cease to amaze me.
Actually one of the most impressive characters in the films. I don't think they ever got better than Watto. Especially in Episode II. Something about his design and the naturalistic way he's animated makes me forget he's animated in a way no other character has.

Its really interesting to see how different Watto seems from the Toydarians on Toydaria from Clone Wars.

Watto's story arc > Rey's story arc

After the TROS I have A LOT more love and respect for the prequels.

Watto is the key to all of this

Watto, Lucas claims, is a futuristic representation of Fagin - aka the 'Old Jew' from Charles Dicken's novel, Oliver Twist.
In Episode I he’s an Italian stereotype and in II he’s a Jewish stereotype
@@aeconn633 He's very clearly a Jewish stereotype in both. "Mind tricks don't work on me, only money", that was in Phantom Menace.
@@LordVader1094 And yet he's incredibly lovable. Strange way to try to turn people against the Jews, eh?

When Star Wars was still magical.. :(
It still is, we still have the video games and the mandalorian
Since day one, Watto was/is my fav cgi character.
Watto is in my top ten favorite characters in the whole saga!
I wonder if Gonzo from the Muppets and Watto from Star Wars are related?

How can a 20 yo CGI cjaracter look better than most of the current CGI?
