Yeah I actually don't really care if people say the podrace scene goes on for too long and slows the movie down. I still enjoy it. And I'm still kicking myself for never buying the Star Wars Episode I: Racer game on Nintendo 64.
@@wyoboy01 They did Racer Revenge for the PS2 which was pretty good too, but you're right, a next gen release would be amazing. @Andrew Chapman, I am not the biggest Star Wars fan, but I enjoy the movies like most, but the Podracing scene is my favourite; I love jets, and I love racing, so the combination was perfect for then 10 year old me.

Ray Riley No other fan community is so terrible. I’ve never seen another example of fans of another series treating actors the way Jake Lloyd, Ahmed Best, and Kelly Marie Tran were treated. It is specific and inherent to SW fans. Deal with it.
My favorite prequel, and one of my favorite moments in any Star Wars: the pod race! It was a surprising change of pace in the movie and it's length is just perfect. It's inclusion in the movie was very ambitious and a novelty to the saga, but it somehow worked. I love just hearing the amazing sound work, the screaming engines and explosions, without any music (until the final round). To me, the pod race is more exciting than all the sequels' space battles combined, sadly.
Have to admit, when I saw parts of the podrace sequence in The Phantom Menace trailers, I did wonder if this would seem out of place for a Star Wars movie after what we'd seen in the original trilogy. But then I saw the movie and actually enjoyed the podrace. Always look forward to it each time I watch Phantom Menace. Even more so as they extended it on the DVD release.
@@user-cl7yr no he doesn’t. He was with him at the premier of Revenge of the Sith and has never said anything bad about George publicly. If anything he probably hates toxic fans like you.

I'd like it even better if the protagonist were an alien. We don't have enough alien protagonists in Star Wars, and a Duro, being from an adventurous species, would love podracing.
Wow, never seen this featurette before. Interesting to see how they did the podrace sequence as it's one of my favourite sequences in Phantom Menace. Love it when Jake Lloyd tries out his podracer at 4:21.
Seing these clips, and then realizing what Star Wars has become today, is actually pretty sad. The original saga of episodes 1-6 is a cinematic masterpiece that most probably will never be rivalled, even a thousand years from now. It´s the epitome of cinematic magic, the collaboration of many gifted people, and two geniuses (George Lucas and John Williams). If only we could get one more Star Wars movie this good!!
@@4523167098 Solo was actually surprisingly good and quite fun. The story of him in his younger years was well thought out Alden definitely imo did the character justice.
This side of the prequels is hugely under appreciated. Every time I hear "all CGI am I right" I cringe. The one thing that I think would have really enhanced the story would be if instead of Jake lloyd playing young anakin, instead hayden played him in episode I also, as a 14-16 year old in the film
Besides the typical "child actors are bad" reason that people give (which honestly Jake didn't do that bad with what he was given) it's more so that once we get to Episode 2 he's practically a different character because he's 10 Years older. His personality is completely different, he's so angry all the time, and he does a lot in the film whereas in Episode 1 Anakin doesn't appear until halfway through the movie, a lot of things going on in the movie either don't apply to him or are beyond his control and besides the podrace & space battle scenes, he doesn't really affect the plot whereas characters like Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and Padme are involved from the very beginning of the movie. Having him as a kid could've worked if he was more involved with the story, like maybe he starts off as a Jedi Youngling that accidentally gets involved so he's in the whole movie or maybe instead of being on Tatooine he's a Naboo fighter's child. It'd make sense for him to have experience with flying and he'd be protecting his home world instead of being a desert slave that helps save a random planet he's probably never heard of before. There are ways that could've kept him a child, but you still run into the problem of him being a decade older in the next film whereas if he was a teenager his personality wouldn't be quite so different between films.
StupidMarioBros1Fan They had to keep it consistant with the OT. Obi-wan says Anakin was from tatooine and left to "follow old Obi Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade."
Most people praise James Cameron's Avatar for its CGI. What many of them don't realise is that ILM made those CGI, the company George Lucas founded. The CGI in the prequels were experimental, but it paved the way for movies like Avatar to shine. Bashing the prequels for the CGI is like if people from 1900 would have walked out of the movie theatres saying it was bad because it was black and white. This is the evolution of movies. It needs experimenting and developing new techniques.
@@StupidMarioBros1Fan He needed to be a kid because the story is about the trauma of being separated from his mother, which is maximized the younger he is. He also needed to be from Tatooine because otherwise it wouldn't make as much sense that his mother needed to stay behind, and Anakin wouldn't feel the guilt of leaving her in the situation she's in. Lucas had good reasons for making the choices he made, and I think it worked better than any alternatives. I believe Hayden Christensen is the same character. I don't believe the change in actors is an issue at all. A nine-year-old is not a nineteen-year-old. Christensen maintains the innocent, boyish qualities of Jake Lloyd while adding a sullen teenage age.
Wow, nice! I've never seen this one before! The podrace scene (pulling from memory as I haven't seen this movie in more than 10 years) is really well made, it's just that it made me cringe every time it was making a reference to the chariot race in Ben Hur. And as all the racers besides Anakin were alien muppets or CG I didn't care much for anything. So it's a cool scene, somewhat superfluous for the movie, but very well crafted.
He may have gone too far in a few places, but the podrace wasn't one of them. Great part of the movie, and it led to one of the best Star Wars games ever.
As much as I absolutely love the podrace scene, I still can’t help but feel terrible for Jake. Lucas absolutely fuckin ruined that poor kid’s life with this movie. Nobody deserves that, especially an innocent kid who just wanted to have some fun.
The pod racing would be great in a Star Wars tv-show but not in the movie. It was distracting from the main story, which was not really interesting at all. Lucas should have made a love triangle story starting right with Christensen concentrating to the three main cast and not the special effects meanwhile working on a few episode short tv-show with young Anakin and Jabba and a Jedi on Tatooine. It could be about the time Jabba emerging to the top of his crime syndicate meanwhile kid Anakin trying to brake free from slavery and a Jedi came to the planet (should be Obi-Wan) investigating the problems the crime war made. Lucas could have put so much toy and merchandising material into this show he could be twice as rich as he is today and the movies would be about telling a story.
Didn't like this scene then and still don't. Even in a fantasy world, nothing about the pods makes any sense. They are combustion jet engines. Where are the fuel tanks? Where are the airfoils, stabilizers, ailerons, rudders or ANY control surfaces whatsoever. There's no logic to how they work or what they do, and it just wastes valuable screen time.
