Slight is very important deck in MTG history. It was basically the first deck that established concept of mana curve. In times when most competitive decks were rather clunky control-like decks trying to play just the very best cards Slight was like "hey what if we play bit weaker cards but consistently drop threats in turn 1, 2 and 3?"

I agree with everything you said and will add/clarify more. Mono red curve decks were running around in 1994 already. The missing piece card was Ball Lightning, which came out in the last "old school" set in the second half of 94, but it took months for people to use it in serious constructed play. This was due to both the temporary nature of Ball Lightning, the fact that mono red was considered a very weak deck, the fact that Ball Lightning was a tough card to pull from The Dark as a U1 (you never get two in a box and you don't always get one copy in a box...this was still the era that packs would sell out in weeks), and other lesser factors.
It was not the first successful mono-color mana curve deck but it was the first mono-color mana curve deck that people explained out why it worked. Because people had a misconception that mono red could not work competitively, as it was known as a newbie deck, people who ran or understood the deck had to explain it out. Ironically, this deck existed years before Paul Sligh but somehow his name is on this arch-type.
But, people who ran mono-white and then later mono-black in serious tournaments in Los Angeles, we already knew the mana curve. One thing to understand about the mana curve that isn't well explained usually but I think nowadays people just get, it's not just about mana curve but also how much damage each mana pip does at each converted casting cost tier.
This is why in mono white mana curve, aka white weenie decks, the tournament-level decks didn't run Land Tax, despite it being a one mana permanent that's very good, and why it didn't run Thunder Spirit. Land Tax did no damage at that vital opening play and Thunder Spirit is just too slow. If Thunder Spirit had Flying, Haste and it was 3/1, then it would work. Otherwise, in the curve where three drops should be rarer, you need devastating cards like Army Of Allah and Jihad. For mono red this was Ball Lightning. For mono black, this was Hypnotic Specter and Drain Life (this worked despite being similar to a X spell because of Dark Ritual).

Love it when a green stompy deck gets in a spotlight match, always have to root for it regardless of who's playing because that was my go-to deck as a kid. Can't tell you how happy I was when I found most of my very first deck with 4x Craw Wurm, 4x Thicket Basilisk, and 4x War Mammoth all from Beta.

@@TimmytheSorcerer It really was the best creature to 11 year old me and will always hold a play in my heart and my collection. Old School MtG is simply the best no matter what shiny new bells and whistles the game gets. (Not saying some of those aren't fun too, but OS is the best lol )

@@joshuagannon6566 Craw Wurm...I thought it was a rare when I opened my first packs. Back then my fave card was Glasses Of Urza.

@@Rorschachqp Glasses of Urza is such an underrated card. Super cheap way to peak at your opponent's hand and see if they have any burn or counterspells for something you want to play.

It's nice to see a proper berserk deck. Folks been drivin me crazy playing less than 4 and 4 giant growths. If you can squeeze in blue for unstable mutation and red for kird ape-then you've got my build.

Excellent match. I’m working on a green stomp deck currently. I’m uncertain what to play. I own that entire deck including sideboard. Definitely gave me some ideas. The sleigh deck as well. Mine could use improvement. Same scenario, I own all those cards. Thx for the ideas.

I'm surprised in your videos we rarely see RGU decks with kird apes, bolts, and growths.

    • @TimmytheSorcerer
      @TimmytheSorcerer  28 дней назад

That’s def a strong archetype. A lot of players here refer to it as Arabian Aggro and/or players add white to it. Also Kird Ape has lost some popularity due to Mishra’s Factory and CiaB.

It seems like both players are using half of a rock solid RG deck. Even without any duals I'd just slam basic mountains and basic forests and get to work.

Timmy, Could you or your audience help me with something?
I was wondering if I could use it somehow to get a world record or access to more of the game because of fame somehow.
I used to play long ago and collect. I've been away for years. Now my daughter and her bf play so they invited me back.
Last time I played this deck my opponent ended with -4017 life and my life total was 15,472.
Is that awesome these days or meh? It's only using cards that are legal to play right now.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
haven't played or bought since Stronghold and Exodus

that green deck is so cool but i don't like berserks and giant growth. you expose yourself to get 2*1ed.
i don't like elvish archers, i think that argothian pixies are way better. 4 crumble main deck are a must and giant slugs are very important. and do not forget that maze of ith is mandatory along side city in a bottle and chaos orb.
that's my take mono green decks

I have a soft spot for Elvish archers because as a little Timmy I thought First Strike was just the best thing evah and here was the most efficient first striker of the game. I never got one and it still hurts a bit.

Siding City in a Bottle is an issue because then you lose your best creature in Erhnam Djinn. I don't think it's worth it.

True, that’s why a lot of players favor Spitting Slug as their top end in mono green.
