    This small accessory can protect your FFF 3D printer filament from two common issues - cleaning and lubrication.
    A sponge wipes the filament clean from any dust particles and prevents them clogging the extruder.
    By dropping a few drops of common mineral oil on the sponge the filament passing through gets lubricated thus relieving the extruder motor from strain.
    Lubrication is specially useful if the filament needs to travel through long tubes before it enters the extruder.
    INSTRUCTIONS
    3D-print the provided STL file and insert a small piece sponge into the filament filter.
    Poke a hole into the sponge and make sure the filament passes through and comes out at the other end.
    Soak the sponge with a few drops of mineral oil (as for sewing machines, door hinges or bicycle chains).
    Place the filament filter somewhere in between the spool and the extruder. If you have a plastic tube which guides the filament to extruder (such as a bowden solution) make sure you place the filter before the filament enters the tube.

    This “filter & lubricator” is amazing. We had some problems with our Brand new Raise3d E2 printer, forums pointed towards buying new “cooler” extruder stepper motor, changing the cog wheel, etc. our seller told us to use this, we made one with the red cap of WD40 bottle and some dishwasher sponge, put some oil into it, ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED! No need to change or adjust anything. Lubricate once a month, you dont need too much oil. Its just to avoid it from sticking when it overflows and clogging, it works like magic.

    Just take a chunk of foam rubber and poke the filament through...
    Don't need the plastic casing
    And the oil might be a bad idea... that is a contaminant on the filament.

    This could be good. I've been getting really choppy prints lately, so I stuck a paperclip into the extruder and pulled it back out to find it covered in dust. I'll give this a go.

    I used one with oil on PLA. Got real problems with adhesion. Took a month to figure out the problem.

    One on Thingy-verse has a cap that's removable, I made one and it works well, easy to remove the dirty sponge by opening it.

      The point of the oil is to trap dust, plus... the as the other posters mentioned, oils have temperature ranges, so you should research the type of oil and decide what you’re trying to accomplish.

    Won't the extruder slip more because of the oily filament?

    • @frankb5728
      @frankb5728 4 года назад

      tension in the extruder is high enough to bite into the filament, you should be seeing material between the gears.

    My way is faster and cheaper
    I just cut off a square section from a dish washing spunge, about 1 inch by 1 inch then I cut a slice in the middle of that half way through and shove it in the plastic and let it rest on top of the feed.
    The pushing of plastic of the feed keeps it in place and it keeps the dried Elmer's glue flakes ( that float in the air after scraping the glass) from getting into the nozzle and clogging it.

    Is mineral oil the only type to use? (3 - in - one ok?). What effect does ANY oil have on the layer bonding (melting together) of the layers??? It would seem that it have some weakening effect on layer bonding... Please advise. Thanks

      Lol ancient comment, anyways you can also use olive oil as long as the temp stays around 190-205 degrees Celsius.

    I use the Melamine sponge. Like the Mr Muscle brand. Dunno why, but the oil seems to go a little further.

    can you use cotton

    • @CreativetoolsSe
      @CreativetoolsSe  7 лет назад

      Thanks Paul for your question. We have not used cotton in our experiments but believe it is technically possible. Nevertheless cotton is a fibrous natural material and loose fibers could travel along the filament and into the extruder.
      The fibers are very small and it should not be a problem or cause failures. But at this moment we have not made any tests ourselves. Most sponges are made of thermoplastic. If any particles become loose they will simply melt in the extruder.

      Hi Alex. That's no typo. Vegetable rapeseed oil, a widely used and popular cooking alternative to olive oil. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapeseed

    • @spugnoid
      @spugnoid 7 лет назад

      It is also known as canola oil. In Canada, I've never seen any cooking oils labelled as 'rapeseed' for obvious reasons. However, a lot of farmers grow rapeseed (fields of bright yellow flowers) around here. I think canola is a more marketable term.

    • @CreativetoolsSe
      @CreativetoolsSe  7 лет назад +1

      Canola indeed sounds a lot more harmless. We see rapeseed fields bloom here in Sweden also, they make beautiful aerial pictures. There seems to be differences between the two, see www.thekitchn.com/whats-the-difference-between-canola-and-rapeseed-206047

    • @RevZafod

      It's the opposite of what happened when Chevrolet tried to sell Nova models in Spanish-speaking countries, where No va means 'no go'. Marketing with an unfortunate term. In these snowflakey days, who would buy "Rape Oil" other than rapists? Canola works much better.
