What a blast from the past...Dark fairy was very popular in the late 90s/early 2000s when I was in my late teens with Jasmine Beckett Griffth, Amy Brown art, etc. I remember seeing this type of stuff in the goth clubs at the that time and I still have a fairy necklace that I bought from Hot Topic back in 2002 😄

I love this! My friends describe me and my style as dark faery with a dash of punk, so this was very relatable 💜 I also feel like Helena Bonham Carter fits into a fairy-witch-doll kind of vibe. I love her asymmetrical and eclectic style of mixing modern with vintage/antique pieces. No matter her age or body type, it just suits her personality so well.

I think inspiration from books can help too! I love how Holly Black describes the outfits of the Fae in The Cruel Prince. Pointed boots, Rowan berries necklaces, black feathers as neck pieces, gold accents in make up, beetle 🪲 /insect pins/jewelry . It’s not a very dark aesthetic but if it’s added on to a black outfit it can give that fae magical vibe. There’s actually a character from the undersea named Nicasia with a lot of beautiful fan art that can be inspo for the fairy siren look!
Agreed! Thats why I say "all high fantasy"! I dont read any fantasy YA as of recently so I don't want to reference those verbatim but I agree they probably do fit in this Dark Muse, the point of my series is to open the conversation to inspirations and you choose your own adventure. It is impossible for me to cover every single inspiration in one video
Another hit video, Melissa! Although, I don't feel a connection fashionwise to the Fae muse, I have always been fascinated with poisonous and carnivorous plants and people who are mischievous or chaos oriented. I get very Fae muse vibes from Elvira and Siouxsie Sioux who are 2 of my muses!

Hey, this is my second comment in this video, but I just wanted to thank you now that the main series of the dark muses is over. I've been a goth since 2007 and have been building my dark alternative wardrobe ever since, but now at the age of 33 your videos really helped me refresh my style in the way I truly wanted to but didn't know how to properly articulate. When you started your series I guessed my muse was vampire with some witch and a side of doll, yet as much as I kept (both before and after your initial video) searching for inspo within those realms, nothing left me satisfied or felt like what I wanted to express myself in. Then your siren video came out and I realized that the muse I was truly looking towards was a vampiric siren, just with less blatant oceanic motifs, and now I feel prettier and sexier than I have in a long time. Thank you so much.

this one was sooo inspiring! initially I thought the fairy aesthetic was the least compatible for me but your inspo examples (jrock, j fashion, emo, goth, etc) really showed me that this is actually the style most connected to the things I grew up loving. I think for me, fairy represents the “add on” aesthetic, in that it’s the best one to add into the other styles when conceiving a look. that playful, colorful energy is deeply resonant. also this series has been SO helpful and probably the most fun system of styling I’ve ever come across. thank you for sharing it!! 🖤 I really look forward to seeing you expand more on this concept!
Also i loved fairies growing up... I had this book with illustratjons Lady Cottington's Book of Pressed Fairies whivh I feel is kind of inspirational for that eerie, mischevious vibe and desaturates yet colourful palette
i think a great example of a fairy/vampire and fairy/doll is rattus rattus here on youtube! they've got an incredible playful punk & DIY style and they have a lot of great dark clown & monster high looks
addendum: chiz does things is another great example for fairy! they've got a lot more color but the shapes and textures are there and i think they still hold the dark aesthetic in a very california way
Revisiting this and i had a reflection about the connections between fairy and siren? In swedish folklore, a lot of our stories take place in the woods but also lakes and rivers! The fey i grew up facinated with (Huldran & Näcken) lure you into the woods/the water to get you lost or to eat or drown you. They take the shape of a beautiful woman/man and lure you away. This Vibe i feel actually has more overlap with what the siren has going on, the difference being in the aesthetic details, ie. Trees and moss instead of pearls and seashells. The colours are brighter too and less cold etc. but the vibes remain about the same, the difference being the thrill of crossing a river alone in the woods vs. gazing into the ocean at night. So i honestly see a lot of overlap between the siren and fairy! Like that's where you have your feycore aesthetics and the like. It's siren with a switch in domain really is what it is. The fairy as a Style tho leaves this part out a bit in favour of the small scale mischief of smaller spirits like the nisse and trolls. That's where i feel the bright colours and small silhouettes fit in! I would put aesthetics like gremlincore in this category. I struggle somewhat with putting alt. styles and styles inspired by pop culture in here, myself bc of how removed it is in time from the folklore i grew up loving. But that's still an interesting thought, though; what happens to the fey when you take them out of their original context ant plop them into modern society? That Would be where subcultures arise, wouldn't it? in that discontent with modernity. Maybe fairy becomes the idea of reclaiming modern waste into their nature? I could fit alt styles in here! Re-and-up-cykling clothes to fit you. Wearing a statement on your body It's far removed from its roots but retains some sort of core maybe? To draw people back to nature? To question consumerism. In many ways siren and fairy are the same, right? Like they are both spirits of nature! I think if one keeps that idea alive it's not hard to meld the two in many interesting ways!

I would say I'm Witch at my core, I prefer organic shapes in my clothes and flowy pieces but I have some Vampiric elements in my makeup and I have some Siren when I do more Corp Goth looks!

IMHO, a lot of the mentioned styles actually fall under dark fairy, being mythical and of the nature. So, hobbit, elf, gnome, etc just fall under the fae category. Like siren taking under her fins any kind of a reptile woman or water spirit and haunted doll embracing in her porcelain arms any kind of artificial muse there is. ***Werewolf seems to actually be kind of a combination of earth/wilderness and blood. Feral, mishmash and always on the move. Which I get but also this is just a simple style system and its not meant to be this deep; this was meant to be a source of inspiration. If one wants to take inspiration from Dark Elves they can, the 5 I narrowed down keeps it straightforward but also the looks of what a Dark Elf is falls between the style inspiration for Siren + Fairy
And I appreciate the correction but this series was never meant to be taken seriously and was meant to be ideas of where to get Dark Style inspiration from without being complicated, I narrowed it to these 5 for being broadened beings that can be expanded upon and I don't want to keep defending why I chose these 5
Oh gosh, if you could see my outfit right now😂😅 A desaturated blue tie dyed baggy long sleeve with gold stars/sun motifs paired with a horizontal black and grey striped long skirt completely accidental and gave me a good laugh here. For me, my personal motifs have always been flowers(mostly desaturated/dead) butterflies and celestial themes with skulls,bats and peacocks thrown into the mix. I’ve literally been every hair color available on the market too.(though I’m currently taking a break). I feel like color wise I really pull into siren, but I love asymmetrical cuts and anything that is light and floaty, but at the same time it’s very eclectic. I think it’s that eclectic pattern part that really pushed me into this siren fairy/whimsy goth look.

IMHO, a lot of the mentioned styles actually fall under dark fairy, being mythical and of the nature. So, hobbit, elf, gnome, etc just fall under the fae category. Like siren taking under her fins any kind of a reptile woman or water spirit and haunted doll embracing in her porcelain arms any kind of artificial muse there is.
***Werewolf seems to actually be kind of a combination of earth/wilderness and blood. Feral, mishmash and always on the move. Half human half animal, not mythical in a sense of being corporeal and devoid of magic, yet still supernatural and intrinsically dark

Agreed, lots of styles and different eras fall under Dark Fairy! My Werewolf comment was not saying this would be in Fairy though lol I was just giving examples of why I chose the Dark Muses to be narrowed down to the 5 Main families. Werewolf would be under Witch the most due to its natural look, furs, and the fact witches are synonymous to being shapeshifters

@nightowl334 go on settings, try to find the audio track option. Select English US/Original audio. Idk why, but it also happened to me with my native language.
@@silkymochi I don't think it's your fault, or that you can control it. Maybe there's something about it on YT studio, but my hypothesis is that YT is doing it automatically for people who have it in languages other than English. Hope that helps

Dark Elves have existed in European Mythology for more then a thousand years. Dark Faeries are only about 700 years old in European Mythology..
Which I get but also this is just a simple style system and its not meant to be this deep; this was meant to be a source of inspiration. If one wants to take inspiration from Dark Elves they can, the 5 I narrowed down keeps it straightforward but also the looks of what a Dark Elf is falls between the style inspiration for Siren + Fairy
And I appreciate the correction but this series was never meant to be taken seriously and was meant to be ideas of where to get Dark Style inspiration from without being complicated, I narrowed it to these 5 for being broadened beings that can be expanded upon and I don't want to keep defending why I chose these 5

A desaturated blue tie dyed baggy long sleeve with gold stars/sun motifs paired with a horizontal black and grey striped long skirt completely accidental and gave me a good laugh here.
For me, my personal motifs have always been flowers(mostly desaturated/dead) butterflies and celestial themes with skulls,bats and peacocks thrown into the mix.
I’ve literally been every hair color available on the market too.(though I’m currently taking a break). I feel like color wise I really pull into siren, but I love asymmetrical cuts and anything that is light and floaty, but at the same time it’s very eclectic. I think it’s that eclectic pattern part that really pushed me into this siren fairy/whimsy goth look.
