  • About to embark on their China Greatness tour, Gary and Eddie from China Crisis had a chat and a few laughs with us at Rewind Festival South (August 2023). They spoke to us about their upcoming tour, their love of Rewind and Gary's recovery from his recent heart attack. They also told us their favourite places to play gigs and their teenage idols and crushes. Always fun chatting to these guys :-)
For more on their tour, check them out on Facebook!

Saw them twice on the 80’s Cruise in 2023. They were without question, our favorite act. They were charming, hilarious, immensely talented, and I am sorry they aren’t back for 2024.

Seen them in the 80s. They were awful. I'd rather watch paint dry

China Crisis are probably my favourite band of all time and they are seriously underrated. But the implication that they should be higher up the bill is surprising, given that their success in sales and profile was less than many other bands in the UK.

Thanks for this. I’ve never seen them live. Flaunt the Imperfection is one of my faves. I used to cover You Did Cut Me with my high school band!

Everyday The Same is my favourite song of theirs, should have been huge but came out when Grunge was at its peak.

Interesting. I bought the album in 1994 on its release and to be honest, was not that impressed by it. I recently got rid of it although if it was on streaming such as Spotify I would listen to it and perhaps be pleasantly surprised. Everyday The Same is not a bad track by any means and is a pleasant listen but I was not convinced by the production on the album compared to Diary Of A Hollow Horse and Flaunt The Imperfection. That said I know there were two versions of Diary... and I have often thought the production on Flaunt... sounds a bit flat and dull in places despite it being a great album overall and containing excellent songs without any filler. The new China Greatness album re-imagining some of their eighties songs with orchestral backing and strings using the original vocals is fantastic. I would even go so far as to say that King In A Catholic Style, You Did Cut Me, Papua and Wishful Thinking sound better than the originals. Mark Phythian who produced Everyday The Same has worked with them on China Greatness- the production on it is next level brilliant!

It is embarrassing listening to Gary Daly talk in a posh accent, you are from St Kevins in Kirkby, be proud of it like the rest of us

He talks very like Holly Johnson I think. His singing voice is quite posh too!

I grew up listening to them in Essex and understood Gary to be a person to whom his postcode was immensely important. Have you heard their song St Saviour Square. A song about the terrible consequences of local authority planning.

@@Wonks1000They have remained loyal to Liverpool. I suppose the person who originally posted was just surprised he doesn't sound like a typical Kirkby lad but maybe he went to drama classes and had voice coaching or something? I don't have a strong Scouse accent either despite living here all my life. He does sound like Holly Johnson though I think.
