This video was very informative. I was not familiar with the Mann-Whitney U test, so I appreciated the simple description and demonstration of how to properly conduct the test in SPSS. It was interesting to learn the difference between a parametric and nonparametric test, in which case a parametric test refers to the statistics we use in counseling such as the ANOVA and requires continuous or scale data, for example, the use of interval or ratio data. Whereas, nonparametric tests allow you to perform similar calculations using ordinal and continuous data. I found the presentation was very easy to follow. Thank you so much for the new information, I will definitely be referring back to this video in the near future!

Mann-Whitney U test was great! I got excited when I saw the second option, which displayed the hypothesis test summary, numbers, and options to retain/reject the null. After clicking on it the frequencies pop up.Thanks for the video.

Dr. Grande- This video was very helpful in understanding the Mann-Whitney U test. I thought that it was very interesting to learn that there are differences between a parametric and nonparametric test. You gave a clear understanding on how to use this test in SPSS and would be helpful for long term studies.

This is not an independent sample, you have used pre and post test scores therefore the non-parametric test is Wilcoxon Signed Ranks is it not?

Thank you very much for this video! Very easy to understand the differences between the kruskal wallis h test and the mann-whitney U test using SPSS. It was helpful to see the different ways of looking at the statistics to derive meaning.

Thank you for sharing this video Dr. Grande. Even though I have taken a course in my undergraduate that used spss, I have never heard of a mann whitney u test. Thanks for the explanation and demonstration of a mann whitney u test.

Dr. You have explained MWU test in easy to understand way. I am a beginner in the discipline. However I will be happy to know how to report for medians for figures you have shown in APA style. Second, is it a good practice only to discuss the medians values when the mean rank are available.

dear sir. thanks for wonderful videos you share. but would you kindly please explain the difference of mann whitney u test results for pretest using the two different methods in this video. using nonparametric test legacy dialog for pretest M-W-U = 974.000 and z = -.311 while using nonparametric test independent samples the result of M-W-U = 1,051.000 and z= .311. but with posttest the results were similar. Thanks.

Very interesting, very helpful, very clear. I wanted to watch some nonparametric alternatives having completed my research paper with a parametric test. I see value in tests that allow for variables other than interval and ratio. No doubt nominal and ordinal are not optimal but sometimes they are all that is available.

Hello Dr. Grande! I survey student grade 1-3, and their perception about study. eg. how do you confident in reading? 0= no confidence, 1=slight confidence, 2=Moderate, and 3=High confidence (1-4), My question is there any differnt btween on the confident bewteen student grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3? so what do you suggest the best way to analyst this? again thansk very much! I am look forward to hear from you. Would Mann-Whitney U test best for this? or Kruskal-Wallis H test? other method?

In this case I think you should use Wilcoxon, if you have pretest and posttest, they are related right?

i guess the problem here asks if there is a significant difference BETWEEN GROUPS (Control and CBT) during pre and post, thus, this qualifies for a Mann-Whitney U. On the other hand, if the study or problem asks if there is a significant difference BETWEEN PRE-TEST AND POST-TEST then we are bound to use Wilcoxon (provided there is no assumption of normality and the data included ordinal level of measurement).

Thank you Dr. Grande. Which test would you run if there are three groups - for example my sample is n=150 with three groups for gender, m, f, nb. I was trying to run this test to see if scores on two Likert scales showed significance between the genders. and then wanted to run it for education (6 groups). Might you know how to accomplish this?
