Wuthering Heights is a gothic novel written by Emily Bronte and published in 1847, the same year that her sister, Charlotte, published Jane Eyre. Growing up relatively isolated, Emily published the novel-her first and only-under the name Ellis Bell, a pen name that her sisters helped coin along with their own when they co-authored a book of poetry in 1846. Dying soon after Wuthering Heights was published to scathing reviews, Emily would never read the introduction to the novel penned by her sister, Charlotte, in which she outed Emily as the author and defended her from critics: “her mind would of itself have grown like a strong tree.”
Set on the moors near Yorkshire, Wuthering Heights tells the story of two neighboring families that become tragically entangled as a result of a fraught romance between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff.
The novel begins with its narrator, Mr. Lockwood, the new tenant of a fine estate called Thrushcross Grange, paying a visit to the neighboring property, Wuthering Heights, which is owned by a troubled man named Heathcliff. Finding himself snowed in, Lockwood passes the night at Wuthering Heights by reading the diary of Catherine Earnshaw, the former inhabitant of his room. While reading, Lockwood is visited by Catherine’s ghost, who asks to be let in through the window. Upon returning home, Lockwood falls ill and asks his housekeeper, Ellen “Nelly” Dean, who used to work at Wuthering Heights, to tell him what she knows about the place.
Nelly’s story begins with the original owner of Wuthering Heights, a gentleman-farmer named Earnshaw, who returns from a trip to Liverpool with a “dark-skinned” orphan boy he found roaming the streets. Naming the boy Heathcliff after his late son, Earnshaw raises the child as his own, inspiring the envy of his biological son, Hindley, who beats Heathcliff every chance he gets. In contrast, Earnshaw’s daughter, Catherine, immediately befriends Heathcliff, and the two become close throughout the years.
One day, Catherine and Heathcliff are caught spying on the civilized Linton family, who live at Thrushcross Grange. Catherine also becomes infatuated with Edgar, the Lintons’ son. When Catherine finally returns to Wuthering Heights a changed young woman, Heathcliff worries that she will lose interest in him. After accepting a marriage proposal from Edgar, Catherine admits to Nelly that, despite her consuming affection for Heathcliff, she cannot marry him due to his inferior social status. Overhearing this, Heathcliff becomes distraught and runs away. At the age of 18, Catherine marries Edgar and moves into Thrushcross Grange.
To Catherine’s relief, Heathcliff returns to Wuthering Heights three years later, having mysteriously acquired gentlemanly manners, education, and money while he was away. While spending time with Catherine at the Grange, Heathcliff indulges the affections of Edgar’s sister, Isabella, in an attempt at revenge on her brother. Over time, the tense atmosphere between Heathcliff and Edgar culminates in Heathcliff being thrown out of the Grange, to which Catherine responds by shutting herself in her room. Ultimately, Edgar is unable to stop Heathcliff and Isabella from being together, and they elope.
Meanwhile, Heathcliff and Isabella return to Wuthering Heights, miserable and regretting their elopement. One day, while Edgar is in church, Heathcliff comes to Grange, where he and Catherine have a passionate reunion, forgiving each other for their betrayals. In order to avoid Edgar, Heathcliff leaves but is later devastated to learn that Catherine died that very night, after giving birth to a daughter, Cathy.
Wracked with grief, Heathcliff calls on Catherine’s ghost to haunt him for the rest of his days.
Growing increasingly crazed, Heathcliff reveals to Nelly that he is still tormented by the ghost of Catherine, having dug up her grave in a deranged attempt to gaze upon her corpse.
Tiring of the gloomy moors, Lockwood moves away but encounters Nelly while passing through the area eight months later. Nelly explains to Lockwood that Heathcliff grew so obsessed with Catherine’s ghost that he stopped eating and sleeping. One day, Nelly found him dead, with a bizarre smile on his face. Heathcliff is buried with Catherine, while Hareton and Cathy make plans to marry and move into the Grange.

Well, at this time, Emily the author died at 30. The sister of Emily died and their mother died when Emily was 3. Typhoid was in the school the sisters attended so they were home schooled until later went to Belgium but got homesickness and died. That's why a few of the characters died in the story my guess, I haven't read it.

I thought Heathcliff was a Gypsi/of Romani decent? Gypsies/Romani people tend to be of darker skin tones and were very much looked down upon in history. Also many people at these times called anyone who wasn’t pale white “black.”
If I'm remember correctly they say he's a gypsy and looks dark and like a Spaniard, I don't think it actually says where he is from, but I could be wrong.
No he wasnt either a Roma or other races. British and irish Travellers are as white as the rest of the Britons. The are called gypsies due to the lifestyle.

You are doing yourself a grave disservice by not reading this epic in its entirety. This and Emily's sister's novel are two of the greats, I would go so far as to say that Jane Eyre is the best novel ever written, high praise for sure.
No, way, I say Pride and Prejudice is the best novel ever written. But written by Jane Austen, of course.
@@sasquatchintownmy modern brain isn't quite happy unless somebody is murdered, so I would probably place Tess of the d'urbervilles above P&P, just because not alot seems to happen in P&P.
Heard someone say this was intentional because Jane Austen was being satirical; the women just concern themselves with who to marry etc because that's all they were allowed to do. Sounds like an ideological take on it though, and tbh I would have to Google it to see what evidence there is that she was being satirical

At the beginning it was hard to read now with the summary the book got interested and I'm done with looking at the summary now u want to say Thank you
Heathcliff is not black or African; he is a gypsy - it's stated clearly in the book
" Its as dark almost as if it came from the devil", " I had a peep at dirty, rages, black-haired childt; big enough.... and repeaded over and over again some gibberish that nobody could understand", "he saw it starving, and homeless, and as good as dumb in the street of Liverpool, where he picked it up and inquired for the onwner" (Bronte 29)
Considering that Liverpool was one of the primarily locations though which the slave trade was carried out, it s save to say that he, at least, is a person of colour
@@fatoumataceesay8007 Gypsy's are people of colour so he is not wrong and also you can be right. He could be mixed.
It's just stupid literalism mate. When a character is described as dark complexion in old books it's now taken as black. Plus, white English culture is seen as wrong and in need of diversity.
No way, he was white. I'm not watching the movie where they will change him his ethnicity
@@benfisher1376Yeah, I myself a tawny skinned colour person but during the age where Wuthering Heights take place, people would considered me as black

Heathcliff wasn't black or a moor...dark features doesn't mean black ...?? I read it ..that never crossed my mind...what cause he is an orphan with dark features..Moors is a place in the book not African moors ..
"But Mr. Heathcliff forms a singular contrast to his abode and style of living. He is a dark-skinned gypsy in aspect, in dress and manners, a gentleman." -Chapter 1
"If you were a regular black... Who knows, but your father was Emperor of China, and your mother an Indian queen..." -Chapter 7
Correct. He may not be black. 😊 Dark-skinned doesn't mean he is black, nor does it mean he isn't. We wouldn't know unless we asked Bronte herself, but we know for sure he was dark-skinned!
@@GradeSaver the Indian Queen should be a giveaway here. No he was not African, no he was not black. You have to remember folks that England and India were kind of close back in the day. But ultimately I prefer Laurence Olivier.
They just want to steal our literature because they have none of their own. And the communists whom have infiltrated the West help them to do this.
@@grosbeak6130 It's very ambiguous, none of the characters know his race nor have a very good understanding about race in general, but his son being white passing must mean he's mixed race (maybe Earnshaw's illegitimate child?) or just pale enough to have a white looking child.

Catherine and Heathcliff were both deprived of parental love and guidance during their formative years. That’s why they both grew up to be dark characters. It’s said that VC Andrews got a lot of her inspiration from the Brontë sisters.

Can we give this title as THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MR LOCKWOOD’S VISIT TO WUTHERING HEIGHTS?
Edgar was blonde, Heathcliff was not black but Gypsy/Indian-looking !!! Why do people get these things wrong
He was southern European, I don't think he was really a gypsy in that sense, she could well have gone for exotic looking southern european or he may just have been a dark haired Irish traveller (not romani, but often described as gypsy due to their lifestyle)
He was called a gypsy all throughout the book.

What is the theory to apply the story?
Love this
How is Wuthering Heights related to events over the last four years in California, USA? Now, here is an interesting essay for college students to submit to their professors. You can tell Emily Bronte was surrounded by people who died young. More main characters are dying in her story than most. Even her brother and his alcoholism is represented in her story and one-character dies of TB like most of her family. And, most of her characters leave home but return like she did several times. How is this related to what is happening in California right now? See below....
I saw a video where Emily's father who outlived his wife and all of his 6 children (most died in their late 20s early 30s within a short period of TB) had an investigation of their deaths since other children in the area were dying at the same young ages in significant numbers. He discovered, unsurprisingly, that it was a glaring lack of sanitation which included the numerous bodies buried in the local Church graveyard leaking into the water system and one outdoor restroom for every 4 households also leaking into the groundwater and water system.
The lack of sanitation combined with TB spreading in the crowded conditions caused by many new immigrants looking for work, combined to cause the lethal conditions in their town. Therefore, it was not just because it was a long time ago before antibiotics. People will be surprised that it is happening today right here in the good ole USA. Reminds me of California, only the public health department knows better today than to allow such unhygienic conditions to flourish amongst the tent cities and large homeless population. Combine that with designer viruses and experimental contaminated injections that do not stem the virus but cause problems of their own, and illegal fentanyl also a cash cow for certain elites, and we're in more trouble than people are aware.
And the Governor of California is either insane with greed and dreams of being a communist dictator or is just plain insane. And, they want him to run for President??? That means he's not the only one insane. It will mean destruction for this country. Too bad Emily Bronte's not here to write the "Withering" Heights that is the Destruction of America, Out Loud by certain elites and with the aid of the Far Eastern country making our medications, biologics, baby food, pet food, computer chips, and all our junk. So, in that respect America is dying due to the stupidly of allowing a "frenemy" at best who wants to take our place in the world, to make and export to our country everything that keeps a country alive, well and flourishing. Of course they are going to put "arsenic in the lace," with the assistance of absolute traitors inside our "gates." No pun intended. What else would you expect?
