I love the idea of being a ML engineer but I seriously doubt I have the intellect for it. I enjoy working on personal projects, but going from that to practically working in a professional environment feels very daunting. I have no idea what I need to learn and be able to do, and I'm not sure that I would enjoy it as much if the projects themselves aren't interesting. In my personal work I get to be creative and invent new things but I wouldn't have the same freedom working professionally.

one reality you missed to mention is job opportunity, ML engineers are not as much in demand, the ML engineers at google are far less than Data Scientists at Google. Also, ML is too specialized sub-branch, whereas a Data Scientist can work as either Data Engineer, Data Analyst or Business Analyst. And the compensation is also quite high.

Also once you spend few years as a data analyst you can switch to data scientist role by learning some additional skills.

Can't I become a machine learning engineer only knowing Python?

You may need to know about database languages like SQL as well as R

@@BenReillySpydr1962 of course I need to know SQL, but if I know Python and SQL I think that R,C++ and Java could be avoided

@@vasilis7076 Maybe. It may depend on the company and your role in the stack. If you're only doing development and aren't doing any complex database manipulation Python should be fine. I'm mainly speaking from my experience with data sets and I had to learn R as well. But there's a dozen or so videos on that if you need it. Java I've seen less of and hadn't had to use C++ for anything since college.
