This is a powerful testimonial, makes me want to impulse buy a VR headset! I just can't justify the purchase of a VR headset until there are more games as good as Skyrim VR
I have enough disposable income for a VR headset, but it's literally not worth it yet in my opinion. I think I will purchase next-gen Valve or HTC VR or Sony's PSVR2 if it works on PC. On my buddy's Oculus, I played Beatsaber, Superhot, Blade & Sorcery, and Gorn. They were fun for about 10 minutes. Flight Simulator is a great experience, but not my idea of fun.
For me the only VR games worth playing are Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR and they require a lot of mods and configuration to enjoy properly. VR is still in its infancy, glorified gimmick, but Skyrim VR gives a taste of the future

@@EhurtAfy Yeh It's crazy that a ten year old game is better than anything else. But then that's because people have been building mods for it for ten years. There's heaps of other great things to play though. Fallout is alright but I got tired of how ugly everything is after a while.
VR would have to become more popular than flat screen gaming for there to be more games like Skyrim, way more popular considering how many people have put so much work into Skyrim. There's nothing else like it in flat screen gaming either. But there are people making mods that convert a lot of flat screen favorites to VR games.
I want to tell you not to wait. That you'll kick yourself for it. But I'm not a fan of any of the headsets out now. Lot of good technology compromised? The PSVR2 means dealing with Sony. I did not like being captive to their platform. Be nice to see HTC produce something good again. They have made a lot of missteps. But we'll see?

There is nothing closer to having a holodeck than stepping into Skyrim VR, the towns, the politics, the quest, there is so much there compared to a dungeon crawler. Also, the immersion, everything from fighting dragons to creeping through caves and tunnels. One of my best moments was walking in the woods and hearing a wolf growl behind me, and physically turning in time to draw my bow and shoot it in midair as it was attacking me. No flat screen experience will ever feel that real and you will never feel the thrill of beginning in a world that is alive around you.
The modders have done amazing work, it is a shame that Bethesda doesn't contract some of them out, to make an official modded release for consumers. There are a lot of people who will never experience it because they are afraid or do not know how to add mods.

I firmly believe that VR / AR will be the future of most kinds of media consumption, at least for individuals or smaller groups, but it isn't going to reach that point until it's basically plug-and-play, it's a lot more comfortable and intuitive, and the cost of entry comes way down.
IOW, everybody I've personally introduced to or have been a part of their introduction to VR has been blown away and wanted that experience, but even for me if I take a break it's almost like I have to back up several steps to figure out the current state of things, re-set settings I've forgotten, etc.
It's a commitment in time and energy that most people aren't going to take on, and most probably just don't have the tech savvy for. It's why Meta is pushing their experience in the direction they are.
When getting into and running a top-tier VR experience is even close to as easy and intuitive as running a top-tier pancake experience, you're going to see VR explode.
Until then it's just too big of a hurdle for true wide-spread adoption.

I played Skyrim for the first ever time yesterday in VR. It’s on sale rn till the 30th for $15 btw. I was doing the first quest, admiring everything in the game. Gorgeous. Then I got to the rats. Never have I ever swung so wildly at a small critter that JUMPED at me. The spider? Scary, but I killed it off fast. Even dead it creeped me out. The scale of the game is INCREDIBLE. Now, what scared me the most and made me have a breather was the swinging trap. Slayed all the Draugr, went peacefully walking, THEN WHAM! Pressure plate pressed! I had to sit down 😂. The inscriptions that glows? Pulled me in. It was beautiful. Thankfully I had a companion from a mod with me, cause I was stuck on the puzzle door and it creeped me out. Idk why. The lore and wall engravings made me curious, but scared. Never knew you could view the items for puzzles. After I got finished with the first quest I decided “Alright, I’m gonna take a break” took off my headset, thought I played for an hour. I PLAYED FOR A WHOLE 3 HOURS!
I was skeptical with Skyrim VR cause idk what I was getting into. Reason I got it was because I enjoyed StarField, but I never played any other Bethesda game. Then I watched the Fallout series. God I love it. Made me want to play Fallout. Decided “What better way to play than VR?” Heard Fallout VR is troublesome, but still fun with mods, but Skyrim? So many praises. Skyrim has been following my life for years. My cousin and brother loves it. I just never got into it as a kid, also surprisingly never heard of anything plot wise, but heard so many great things. So I’m blank, but I do love medieval stuff, but I’m more of a outlaw cowboy type of guy. So I was skeptical if I should keep the game or not. After that first quest and the journey back, 100% keeping the game. LORDY when people say it’s one of the most immersive games. IT IS! With mods of course, WHICH IS ALSO AMAZING TO BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD MODS FOR FLATSCREEN SKYRIM TO VR SKYRIM! No remaking it for VR! Even when I was just looking for an area in the town to sleep the night (couldn’t find it) I was sucked in. This video describes things amazingly, even at its surface. What an amazing game, and tbh I don’t think I’ll ever play it flatscreen now. Never had, possibly never will (unless I crave it and can’t access VR)

I remember I tried out VR about 2 or 3 times at various events and even with my big ass glasses the experience stuck with me. Just having that depth is something that people don't understand till they experience it. And that was with some demo games lol. So a full game would be something else.

I hid behind the buster sword ( mod ) when that bleak falls barrow spider was lunging at me.
I had configured the block settings so that raising the hilt by chest height would put me in a block state. With a car door for a sword in front me as a shield, I was able to survive with enough hp. Enough to jump in the air 10 feet high by raising my headset quickly ( mod ) and crashed said car door sword into the spider.

Probably darkness for stamina and desaturation for magika, and for the compass pulling out an actual compass from your belt and looking at it same with a map and journal.
Also wish there was a mod that adds on from the grabbing and pushing the npc mod that'd make them more alive. So they might resist or even aggro based off a reputation system but certain things would basically be off limits to everyone regardless so like slapping a book in someone's face or throwing an apple at someone would make them wanna fight you

Quest 2 if you don't have a powerful PC and want more freedom. If you'd like something more high-end, Valve Index is still your best choice, but you'd need a powerful PC.
      I personally use Valve Index.
      My rig is:
GPU - GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GDDR6 GAMING OC
      CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core 3.7GHz AM4
Motherboard - ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING
      RAM - G.SKILL Aegis 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL 16
      SSD - ADATA XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro 1TB 3500/3000MB/s
      Power Supply - Corsair CV650 80 PLUS Bronze 650W
It's 2 years old and it runs everything I throw at it.
On both you can play either seated or standing (Playspace walking/movement is also an option for most games, but only a few utilize it for real).
The configuration for both (Quest 2 and Valve Index) is extremely easy and if you get stuck, there are many online tutorials that can help get everything up and running.
For Skyrim VR, Valve Index is what you'd want to get. Have in mind that the base VR port of the game is hard to control (the button mapping is awful), the graphics are dated and the tutorial aria is useless. If you want to play Skyrim VR, you better spend day or two scrolling nexus mods. For the controls, there are many prebuild configs that you can use and it's up to you to choose what suits you best.
If you choose to get into VR, I would recommend you start with the following games (Vavle Index point of view):
      1. Beat Saber
      2. Superhot VR
      3. The lab (Valve's project)
      4. Google Earth VR (it was impressive to me)
      5. Accounting
      6. Job simulator
You can also try some of the google's spotlight stories (those are short animations).
      * The above mentioned are in no particular order and can be enjoyed at your own pace.
If you want to fix the motion sickness, my fix was to beat Boneworks. I played Boneworks for about a week and at first you are more than likely to feel sick with the continues movement. It's best if you play the game for one, two hours and take a break. Your hands would feel small in your peripheral vision after you take off your headset :D
After Boneworks, I no more have any issues with continues movement and that pays off when you play Skyrim, Half Life, Blade and Sorcery or any other game that supports continues movement.
And at the end, I would like to be completely honest with you when I say:
Those word's might be a bit harsh to someone that want's to get into VR, but It's what I would have liked to hear beforehand.
VR is a bit overrated at the moment as most games are more like tech demos. Fun but short, expensive and not that deep.
Have in mind that most RUclips VR channels make everything look fun and exciting, but in reality it's not that special. There are some cool places here and there, but most of the time it's nothing that you haven't seen before in other flat screen games.
Best advice is to measure your expectations, learn to roleplay and enjoy the experience. Have fun!

@@donkeysunited Valve index is old at this point, with a bad LCD display, low resolution, and it's pretty heavy. Yet the whole system is one of the most expensive.
I'd recommend the HP Reverb G2.
It has significantly better visuals - way higher resolution, better colours and contrast, black levels. The headset is much lighter and more comfortable, and it uses the same great audio as the Valve index.
It also doesn't require any base stations to set up for the controllers, as it uses inside out tracking like the Quest 2.
If you really want the index controllers, you can also use them with the G2 with a very easy set up, too. Though that will require the base stations of course.
It costs 300 less than the index as well. So I'd highly recommend this headset.

@@zackmac5917 Thanks for that. I also read that the Index is not a good choice for people who wear glasses (like me) as you can't bring the screen near to the eyes, which is supposed to be one of the biggest selling points of the Index.

I loved Skyrim when it first came out in 2011, playing again and again from the beginning for hundreds of hours. Then mods came in and I loved what was on offer but the load order was a nightmare to figure out. There was no definite way to put certain mods , which caused the game to crash making it unplayable. I gave up, wishing the mods would just organise themselves. I would return to Skyrim, if I could just borrow someone else’s tried and tested mod list and load order. The way this video makes Skyrim look is like a modern day game with the photo realism. I want to experience that level of Skyrim beauty. The NPC mods are unreal!

Getting mods running is honestly not too difficult to get used to (in this or other games). There's obviously a bit of a learning curve, but watch some tutorials and you'll have it figured out in no time! Mod managers like Vortex or MM2 basically do what you're suggesting (how you'd like the mods to "organise themselves"). There's always going to be some frustration when you have to resolve the odd mod conflict, etc, but when you get a bunch of wicked mods rolling stable together, it's so worth it. 🙃

There are ways to get good modded setups without doing it yourself. Wabbajack and the recent Nexus Collections feature can install full modlists so it's less of a hassle. Worth taking a look into
