  • Revisiting your abstract painting process is important, and I'll emphasize this throughout the video by creating a companion piece to one of my recent abstracts. Why revisit? Because it's an integral part of learning and growing as an artist. When we revisit our abstract painting process, we don't just replicate; we reinvent and rediscover. I'll demonstrate this by creating a companion piece to one of my previous abstract works. This exercise isn't just about replicating the same acrylic painting; it's about exploring the nuances that made your original piece unique.

This painting tutorial will guide you step-by-step through the process. We'll revisit the techniques and decisions that drove the original creation, but with a fresh perspective. I'll highlight the importance of repetition in the abstract painting process. It's through revisiting and recreating that we reinforce and refine our skills.
Moreover, this process of revisiting can greatly boost confidence, especially for those new to acrylic painting or abstract art. Recreating a piece with improved technique not only enhances our skills but also solidifies our unique style and expression. This journey through abstract art is not just about remembering the steps but deepening our understanding of our artistic process.
So, whether you're a seasoned artist or just starting out, join me in this exploration. Let's revisit, recreate, and rediscover the magic of the abstract painting process together. By the end of this video, you'll have not just a new piece of art, but a deeper connection with your creative self.
    Keep on painting!

Thanks for this Chris. It's a curious process and in the end i could not decide which aspects appealed the most. The thought that actually crops up always in my own mind is to reflect on my mark-making, in abstract. Why how where with what... i also find i am not good at creating dominant shapes and this demo brought out the strength of the monolithic shape you created. 😊

Hey Emmanuel! I think looking at mark making is typically one that I focus on as well. Probably because most of the time mine are more loose and chaotic, so I have to think about how the marks that made it to the end got there.

Also the tissue paper that comes with gift bags…I save mine to glue on a canvas I messed up. Then glue with Elmer’s glue….then paint craft paint over that…it feels chalky…then I eventually start painting with tube paint.

Great idea! I just picked up some inexpensive tissue paper, then realized I already had some that I saved from a gift. I'm going to play with it this weekend.

This was great to see Chris. I'm a gel print artist, love putting leaves on the gel plate, and printing the 'ghost print" (after you lift the leaves, let plate dry, and roll a thin lighter color over and then pull print with tissue) I have a ton of gel prints on tissue that I plan to incorporate into acrylic paintings. Also, at election time, there is great slick, heavy, stock that comes in the mail, great for stencils. Hope to see more of these with the gel plate. Not that I don't love every one of your videos, because I do!! Huge fan. Thanks so much. p.s. Tissue ideas: Carnival Wet Strength tissue; rice paper and regular cheap colored tissue, black is fun too.

Thanks so much, Kathy! I've made note of your wonderful suggestions 😊 I hope to spend more time playing with the gel plate over the next few weeks, so I'll try out some of your recommendations. As I get more comfortable with it, I'm sure I will do more videos.

Sounds good. Also, to condition your gel plate, you can put a bit of baby oil on it, cover and massage into the plate, leave for 15 min, then wipe off, always store your plate in between copy paper, not in the original acetate, or you will get bubbles on the surface. I condition my plate about every other use, it helps the printing process. All the best, Kathy. I hope to start YT content this year, doing mostly gel printing; maybe some painting, not sure. trying to settle on a good channel name :-) @@chrisloudart

@@KathyBrooksArt We're on the same brain wave. I just bought some baby oil. I'd never heard about not storing the plate in the original acetate (that's exactly what I've done). I will take care of that tonight. My advice is to start your YT channel now. You'll have some growing pains, so get the bugs out now. Learn along the way. Your first several videos will probably not be good, so get them out of the way now. The hardest part is starting. Let me know when you're live. Good luck!❤️

Love the incorporation of the gel print here. It’s fun to play with various ways to combine it and canvas. Enjoyed this one a lot, thanks.

@@chrisloudart if you haven’t discovered them already, both Robyn McClendon and Gel with Mark on YT do some pretty interesting gel plate stuff either about or applicable to acrylic paper, canvas or panels and larger format work.

I love this project and the simplicity of it. You're spot on with your narrative regarding beginners. I don't sit at my art table enough (personal problem) but as I explore other artist's styles and techniques I do hope to find my own way. Art is therapy for me and a pure joy. Abstract and collage are definitely my favorite styles. Thanks again for your time to share and encourage!

Thank you, Laurie! I totally agree with you on art being therapeutic and pure joy❤️ I have every confidence you'll find your way and style. You might already have a style, but maybe don't realize it. I've never thought I had a style, but so many people tell me I do. Someday I'll recognize it for myself.😂
