  • This is RCA's 4-speed record player 1-EMP-2K from 1959/1960 I think. This example could use a couple of new filter capacitors and maybe an idler wheel refresh.

    I had one of these (my first record player) in about 1965 (I was 11). I traded my buddy a toy folding army shovel for it (he was using his as a paddle when playing in the S. Florida canals when he dropped it so he needed another). Dad worked at RCA and got me a new idler wheel cause the old one was worn out (I remember it cost 50 cents). I put a 1/4" jack in the side so I could plug in a 12" (!) speaker. My brother and I used to sit and play our 45's for hours (all speeds). I can remember once "souping up" the 78 setting by wrapping tape on the spindle until it was playing as fast as we could get it to go. The tone arm had a waffle pattern underneath to give it structural stability. To help keep it from 'skipping' I packed it with modeling clay. It must have weighed a half pound! I eventually replaced it with a Dual 1229...

    A good example of the kind of record player a teenager might have owned during the early years of rock 'n' roll. These days everyone hates the Crosley Cruiser, but it's really just a modern version of the same thing.

      VWestlife, yes but usually there is a little more control too. Such as adjusting tracking weight. And i still wouldnt buy one of these myself as they arent going to do any good for the records.

      @@jaysvintagerecordsandphono6184 Geeze. You guys are rough! Don't like the new ones, don't like the old ones either. I'm here looking for a portable so my mom can play her parent's old 78s that haven't been heard in decades. What difference does it make? Just throw the old records away or listen to them once or twice on a crappy player? If the records aren't heard are they even music?

    Well, well, well...look who else has a Diana Ross 45 rpm record! Except mine's playing "The Boss", because who needs "Love Hangover" when you can groove to the rhythm of the workplace hierarchy, am I right? I've been keeping this baby safe and sound in my collection, but I misplaced it 7 years ago and went through a total meltdown. I searched high and low, turning my house into a tornado disaster zone, but no luck. And then... BAM! Three weeks ago, I found it hiding in plain sight inside a 33 rpm record sleeve. How did it even get there? Did it run away from home and then came back after a wild night out? Who knows? All I know is that I'm relieved because otherwise, I'd be weeping like a baby while watching this video and seeing someone else's Motown Diana Ross 45 spinning. Phew!

    Good taste in 45’s. I had that exact record. (Along with hot rod hearts, give me the night, endless love, flash gordon by 👑 ...etc) I recommend everyone try to remember their 45 collection and make a playlist of just the 45s. The reason is that when you play them as a collection, it brings back more memories than just the songs by themselves. I threw all mine away like Frisbees in a dirt lot in 1984 just to see if records could fly.

    Hi Dan - Very nice condition! You know, I've been going to yard sales, hamfests and estate sales for quite awhile and I've only found, and bought one portable record player made between the 1950s-1970s that hadn't been beat to death. The one I did was a 1958 Zenith. It did need some electronic work, but the cabinet was in great shape. I just never seem to find 'em in my trips. But, the season is just starting for the year. We'll see if I can find something this year. See ya -- Atco

    There's a former RCA plant about a mile from my house. When it closed down in the early 80s, K-Mart moved in to most of the space with about 3 or 4 small businesses taking the rest. Earlier this year, the K-Mart closed. I hope another retailer moves in, as I'd hate to see it torn down.

    The earliest I find is Nov 1958, the tone control is referred to as "Golden Throat Tone"! :) , came in 4 colors "1EMP2E, White Alligator", "1EMP2K, Saddle Morocco", "1EMP2KK, Brown Alligator", "1EMP2L, Blue Morocco", in 1958 it sold for $29.95 . At 8:36, you can see the small indentation on the wheel, from the 78 speed. Hope that helps some. ~Jack, VEG

    I just bought one at a thrift store, same model, 7 EMP-K There is another number REM031321 Made in New Jersey. The edges of the outer casing is wrapped in leather with stitching. The tone arm (I believe you called it) is metal. Very old and very lovely. The only thing is It has no needle, I have no idea what kind to get.

      Low audio on an old piece of electronics like this is often the result of a capacitor inside on the audio board that has gone bad.

    How come the 78 sounds better than the 33 and 45? (I think I have a 16 around here somewhere.)
    I have the exact same model except with snakeskin suitcase covering. I bought it on ebay and it arrived today, but I can't play it as it needs new needles or at least the 33/45 needle is really worn. The 78 may have life in it but I think I won't chance it. The tone arm is in good shape and the turntable is really worn. Yours is prettier than mine.

    The Victor Talking Machine Company of Camden, NJ, used the Dog & Gramophone trademark "Nipper"(His Master's Voice) under licence from the Gramophone Company of England. When in 1929 RCA bought out Victor, they should've got the factory and the Victor brand-name ONLY! The Dog & Gramophone trademark "Nipper"(His Master's Voice) was NOT Victor's to sell or dispose of in ANY way. Ownership of the trademark was vested wholly and solely with The Gramophone Company until 1938 when that company merged with Columbia Graphophone Company of England to form Electric & Musical Industries Limited(EMI), the new entity taking full ownership of the Dog & Gramophone trademark "Nipper"(His Master's Voice) as well as the "Magic Notes" trademark of Columbia and Parlophone's 'Pound" trademark which Columbia owned after World War One. The original Columbia Graphophone Inc., based in New York had been long since defunct but what had been the British offshoot flourished and became a company in its own right early in the 20th century after its erstwhile "parent" company went down the "gurgle-hole". That's how EMI came to be. But before that merger, the Gramophone Company should've stepped in and REVOKED Victor Talking Machine Company's licence on the Gramophone Company's Dog & Gramophone trademark.

    That's really built like a tank with it's all-steel construction. Unfortunately it uses one of those non-serviceable Astatic arms where the cartridge is non-replaceable---arm and cartridge were replaced as a unit. I bet some Superglue would fix the crack in the arm

    • @justsumguy2u
      @justsumguy2u 2 года назад

      @@rebeccafranz3040 The motor probably needs to be disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. The idler wheel may also be failing. I would not play modern records on a player like this, it will destroy records made after the mid 60's

  • @neilforbes416
    @neilforbes416 6 лет назад

    There is something in the lid that SHOULD NOT BE THERE! It's that trademark! The Dog & Gramophone "Nipper" trademark of His Master's Voice should only be used in the USA by Capitol Industries, an EMI-owned company, a subsidiary(read "infant member") of the EMI group of companies. The only trademark that SHOULD appear in the lid is RCA's own "button" trademark with the lightning bolt trailing off the 'A'. The "Nipper" trademark should've been absent from the USA between the years 1929 and 1955.

    • @DanOConnorTech
      @DanOConnorTech  6 лет назад

      Well then, what about an RCA Victor record player made _after_ 1955 like this one - sometime from 1958 -1961?

    • @neilforbes416
      @neilforbes416 6 лет назад

      The same! it should carry the "button" trademark with the lightning bolt trailing off the 'A'. In 1955 EMI bought out all but a bit over 5 % of Capitol Industries, which put Capitol firmly under EMI's control, thus any trademark or trade-name EMI owned(with only the exception of Columbia, used by CBS for USA and Canada), EMI should be using those trademarks in the USA through Capitol, thus His Master's Voice and Parlophone should've been used to carry EMI's British AND Australian roster in the USA and Canada. After all, Capitol IS a subsidiary of EMI, not a division but a mere subsidiary, akin to the infant toddler in a family. As for Parlophone, any similarity between that brand and the Dover-owned Par Lo label and brand in New Orleans, is negligible at most.
